The effects of owl predation on the foraging behavior of heteromyid rodents   总被引:14,自引:0,他引:14  
Summary Researchers have documented microhabitat partitioning among the heteromyid rodents of the deserts of North America that may result from microhabitat specific predation rates; large/bipedal species predominate in the open/risky microhabitat and small/quadrupedal species predominate in the bush/safer microhabitat. Here, we provide direct experimental evidence on the role of predatory risk in affecting the foraging behavior of three species of heteromyid rodents: Arizona pocket mouse (Perognathus amplus; small/quadrupedal), Bailey's pocket mouse (P. baileyi; large/quadrupedal), and Merriam's kangaroo rat (Dipodomys merriami; large/bipedal). Both kangaroo rats and pocket mice are behaviorally flexible and able to adjust their foraging behavior to nightly changes in predatory risk. Under low levels of perceived predatory risk the kangaroo rat foraged relatively more in the open microhabitat than the two pocket mouse species. In response to the presence of barn owls, however, all three species shifted their habitat use towards the bush microhabitat. In response to direct measures of predatory risk, i.e. the actual presence of owls, all three species reduced foraging and left resource patches at higher giving up densities of seeds. In response to indirect indicators of predatory risk, i.e. illumination, there was a tendency for all three species to reduce foraging. The differences in morphology between pocket mice and kangaroo rats do appear to influence their behavioral responses to predatory risk.  相似文献

As a crucial member of the Hedgehog (Hh) protein family, desert hedgehog (dhh) plays a vital role in multiple developmental processes, cell differentiation and tissue homeostasis. However, it is unclear how it regulates development in fish. In this study, we cloned and characterized the dhh gene from Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae. The full-length cDNA of Pydhh comprises 3194 bp, with a 1386 bp open reading frame (ORF) that encodes a polypeptide of 461 amino acids with a typical HH-signal domain, Hint-N and Hint-C domains. Multiple sequence alignment revealed that the putative PyDHH protein sequence was highly conserved across species, especially in the typical domains. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the PyDHH clustered within the Pleuronectiformes. Real-time quantitative PCR showed that Pydhh was detected in fourteen different tissues in adult-female and adult-male marbled flounder, and nine different tissues in juvenile fish. During early embryonic development stages, the expression of Pydhh was revealed high levels at hatching stage of embryo development. Moreover, the relative expression of Pydhh was significantly higher in the juvenile liver than adults’, and higher in the female skin than the male skin. To further investigate its location, the in situ hybridization (ISH) assay was performed, the results showed that the hybridization signal was obviously expressed in the immune organs of Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae, with weak signal expression in the other tissues. Our results suggested that Pydhh is highly conserved among species and plays a vital role in embryonic development and formation of immune related organs.  相似文献

The Baja California killifish, Fundulus lima, is found in six desert oases of the southern Baja California Peninsula, Mexico. The recent introduction of exotic fishes, particularly redbelly tilapia, have impacted the ecology of Fundulus lima such that it is now endangered. Plans of relocating F. lima to bodies of freshwater that are free of exotics have been proposed, however little is know about the genetic identity of the current populations. In this study, we examined the mitochondrial control region of F. lima samples from 4 oases, and in addition, compared these samples to their sister species, the California killifish F.␣parvipinnis. Using a combination of phylogenetic and coalescent approaches, we were able to determine that the two subspecies of the California killifish, F. p.␣brevis, and F. p. parvipinnis, and F. lima form an unresolved trichotomy that diverged between 200,000 years and 400,000 years ago. The one F. lima individual that we were able to collect in the southernmost oasis grouped with the southern subspecies of the California killifish, F. parvipinnis brevis. In contrast, we found that the 3 northern oases grouped together in a “Fundulus lima” clade. Each oasis is genetically distinct, yet there is no evidence of a␣marked genetic bottleneck in any populations (Haplotype diversity between 0.5 and 0.8). Future relocation plans will therefore need to be done cautiously to preserve the genetic identity of the original populations.  相似文献

Spatial dynamics of DSE in the roots and rhizospheres of Hedysarum scoparium Fisch. et Mey. and soil factors were investigated at seven arid and semi-arid locations in northwest China in July 2015. Sampling sites were found to have a significant influence on the morphology, components, distribution, and infection of DSE in the roots of H. scoparium. Of nine DSE species isolated from H. scoparium roots, five are reported here for the first time from desert ecosystems. Hyphal infection in roots was positively correlated with soil urease and phosphatase activity. The presence of microsclerotia in roots was positively correlated with soil ammonium, and negatively correlated with soil organic matter and pH. We conclude that DSE infection is spatially predictable, and is influenced by nutrient availability and enzymatic activity. This research provides a basis for further understanding the ecological functions of DSE, and their roles in the promotion of vegetation restoration and in reducing erosion and desertification in arid ecosystems.  相似文献

Summary The climatic and physiographic features of the Western Desert of Egypt vary gradually from the Mediterranean coast inland. The present study provides an analysis of the gradients exhibited by these environmental variations and their relationships with vegetational gradients and the phytosociological behaviour of species in a sector along the Cairo-Alexandria desert road. The multivariate analyses of the vegetation lead to the recognition of six interrelated vegetational groupings which were distributed along a climatic gradient of increasing aridity, and an edaphic gradient of increasing sandiness and decreasing salinity and level of total phosphorus. These groupings were distinguished into three sets: a set ofConvolvulus-Helianthemum-Artemisia, andHelianthemum-Echiochilon, a set ofAnabasis, andSalsola-Anabasis, and a set ofAsphodelus-Noaea andThymelaea-Anabasis-Noaea groupings. The first set occupies the more arid end of the climatic gradient and the end of the coarse texture, low salinity and low levels of total phosphorus of the edaphic gradient. The second set occupies the opposite end of the edaphic gradient and the middle position of the climatic gradient and the middle position of the climatic gradient, and the third, the middle position of the edaphic gradient and the less arid end of the climatic gradient. Taxonomic nomenclature is according to T?ckholm (1974). The multivariate analyses were carried out using a Burroughs B6700 at the Computer Center of Utah State University, and supported by the U.S. Desert Biome. The authors are indebted to W. The reconstruction of a tubule-like structure in vitro has provided a promising system to analyze factors that drive morphogenesis and the underlying mechanisms. In this study, we took advantage of the inhibitor cyclopamine and a smoothened agonist to detect the role of the Dhh signaling pathway in the reconstructed tubule-like structure. Sertoli cells did not show polarity, rounded peritubular myoid cells and scattered Leydig cells were observed, combined with less laminin and lower proliferation of Leydig, peritubular myoid, germ, and Sertoli cells. However, in the presence of SAG, elongated peritubular myoid cells gathered at the bottom of polarized Sertoli cells, and most of the Leydig cells gathered at the outer part of the elongated peritubular myoid cells. Moreover, SAG promoted the secretion of laminin, assisting in the formation of the basal membrane and promoting the proliferation of Leydig, peritubular myoid, and germ cells. The level of Gli1 was significantly downregulated when treated with cyclopamine, whereas it was significantly upregulated when treated with SAG. These results indicate that the Dhh signaling pathway regulates the reconstruction of tubule-like structures by regulating the expression of Gli1.  相似文献

Cactus seeds on the soil surface in the desert are subjected to periods of drought that last for up to a few months, and thus they are typically under discontinuous hydration (or discontinuous dehydration). Apparently, they can tolerate long periods of dehydration after single or multiple hydration events and subsequently germinate in accordance with the previous hydration experience. This was verified in three cactus species from the Sonoran Desert. Seeds of Stenocereus thurberi hydrated for 72 or 80 h followed by a dehydration period lasting for 4, 14, 70, 120 or 181 d germinated 2–3 d earlier and had 1.4–2 times shorter mean germination time (MGT) than untreated seeds. Seeds given shorter hydration periods also began to germinate sooner than the controls. MGT was shorter only when the hydration period was 48 h or longer. Final germination percentages were not affected by these treatments, only the MGT. Except for differences in germination percentages, similar results were found for Pachycereus pecten-aboriginum and Ferocactus peninsulae. When the cycle of 24 h hydration followed by 4 d dehydration was repeated one or two times, the effect was cumulative: MGT was equal to 48 and 72 h hydration, respectively. These results suggest a phenomenon of “seed hydration memory,” the ability of seeds to retain during dehydration periods those physiological changes that result from seed hydration. Thus, treated seeds subsequently germinated earlier then untreated seeds, regardless of the duration of dehydration period. This led to a greater biomass accumulation and thus to higher survival in seedlings from treated than from untreated seeds.  相似文献

Crowding causes many organisms to express phenotypic plasticity in various traits. Phase polyphenism in desert locusts represents one extreme example in which a solitary form (solitarious phase) turns into a gregarious form (gregarious phase) in response to crowding. Conspicuous differences in body size and colour occur even in hatchlings. The phase‐specific differences in hatchling characteristics are caused by the tactile stimuli perceived by the antennae of their mother. However, the nature of the tactile stimuli and the mechanism by which the perceived stimuli are processed as a gregarizing signal remain unknown. To explore this problem, the antennae of solitarious adult females of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria are touched with the bodies of conspecific locusts at different physiological stages and those of other species. The results suggest that a cuticular chemical factor at a specific developmental stage of conspecific locusts causes the solitarious females to produce large eggs that give rise to black hatchlings characteristic of gregarious forms (progeny gregarization), and that this or a similar compound occurs in other acridids, crickets and cockroaches but not in beetles. The involvement of a chemical substance is also supported by hexane extracts of cuticular surfaces of locusts that induce the same effects. Interestingly, crowding induces such gregarizing effects only when the female receives the appropriate stimulus in the presence of light. Solitarious female S. gregaria with their head capsule coated with phosphorescent paint exhibit progeny gregarization in response to crowding and light pulses in darkness, whereas those treated in the same way without light pulses fail to do so.  相似文献
