Abstract. 1. In order to gain insight into how Drosophila mojavensis Patterson and Crow (which lives on the rotting tissue of cactus) successfully shifted host plants, from an Opuntia species to columnar cactus species, over evolutionary time, specific components of columnar cactus and Optunia tussue were examined for their effects on adult longevity.
2. The availability of free sugars affects the survival of adult D.mojavensis . The addition of a sugar to columnar cactus tissue significantly increased the longevity of adults that fed on those tissues. This increase in adult longevity was equal to the longevity observed on unsupplemented Opuntia tissue, which has free sugars present.
3. Live microorganisms added to Opuntia tissue had a slight detrimental effect on adult longevity (longevity was decreased by approximately 1 week).
4. Low concentrations of atmospheric ethanol (independent of diet) increased the longevity of adult D.mojavensis to levels comparable in magnitude to that provided by the addition of free sugars to the diet.
5. This information and the apparent lack of a year-round supply of free sugars for D.mojavensis in nature suggests that the ethanol (produced by fermentation) rather than free sugars per se is the most important component of rotting cactus tissue for the survival of this species and may explain its successful host-plant shift. 相似文献

The Pinacate region is part of the Gran Desierto, one of the driest deserts in North America. The presence-absence of perennial plant species, together with soil and landform characteristics, were registered in 110 sampling sites within this region. A classification and ordination of plant communities showed soil and landform units to be good predictors of plant variation. Plant distribution and species richness were also strongly related to altitude and rockiness. A Generalised Linear Model was used to fit the response curves of individual species.The environmental factors related with plant distribution are indicators of the water regime within a given site. Plant communities repeat along topographic gradients the large-scale biogeographic variation of the Sonoran Desert. Microphyllous shrubs colonise the drier bajada slopes, while more diverse communities, dominated by cacti and drought-deciduous trees, grow on the wetter pediments and in pockets within rocky soils. 相似文献

Abstract. We followed plant cover and soil seed density of shrubs and herbs in two markedly contrasting years with regard to annual rainfall in two opposite‐facing slopes (mesic vs xeric) and an intervening, relatively wet, ravine of a typical creek in semi‐arid Chile. During the ENSO year 1997 cover of ephemerals increased in all three sites; 43% vs 8% on the xeric slope 75% vs 26% on the mesic slope and 57% vs 32% in the ravine. The number of species was almost three times higher on the xeric slope (27 vs 10 species), increased by 47% on the mesic slope (28 vs 19) and by 14% in the ravine (24 vs 21). Cover of shrubs plus perennial grasses increased from 52% in 1996 to 59% in 1997 on the xeric slope, but no significant cover changes were found on the mesic slope or the ravine. On the xeric slope peak density of seeds was 4500/m2 in 1996, while during the ENSO year it was 24000/m2. On the mesic slope equivalent values were 3000 and 17000 seeds/m2 while in the ravine figures were 8500 and 27000 seeds/m2. The strong responses of ephemerals and seed bank to the ENSO‐driven wet year of 1997 demonstrate the importance of this phenomenon in replenishing, recovering and probably maintaining ephemeral vegetation in this region. 相似文献

The Great Basin Desert of western North America has experienced frequent habitat alterations due to a complex biogeographic history and recent anthropogenic impacts, with the more recent alterations likely resulting in the decline of native fauna and flora. Dark (Microdipodops megacephalus) and pallid (M. pallidus) kangaroo mice are ecological specialists found within the Great Basin Desert and are potentially ideal organisms for assessing ecosystem health and inferring the biogeographic history of this vulnerable region. Herein, newly acquired nuclear‐encoded microsatellite loci were utilized to assess patterns of variation within and among spatially discrete groups of kangaroo mice and to evaluate gene flow, demographic trends, and genetic integrity. Results confirm that there are at least three genetically distinct units within M. megacephalus and two such units within M. pallidus. The three units of M. megacephalus appear to have different demographic histories, with effectively no gene flow among them since their divergence. Similarly, the two units of M. pallidus also appear to have experienced different demographic histories, with effectively no gene exchange. Contemporary effective population sizes of all groups within Microdipodops appear to be low (<500), suggesting that each genetic lineage may have difficulty coping with changing environmental pressures and hence may be at risk of extirpation. Results of this study indicate that each Microdipodops group should be recognized, and therefore managed, as a separate unit in an effort to conserve these highly specialized taxa that contribute to the diversity of the Great Basin Desert ecosystem. 相似文献

The distributional pattern, phenology and sex structure of the desert shrub Thymelaea hirsuta (L.) Endl. were evaluated in six major habitat types in the Mediterranean desert of Egypt.The distributional pattern changes from contagious in the less arid-to random in the more arid habitats.Soil salinity, low content of soil moisture, and extremes of temperature are of importance for the phenological activity.The plant is mainly dioecious.
