Tubú (Montanoa guatemalensis, Asteraceae) is a popular tree used in windbreaks in the San Luis valley near the Monteverde cloud forests of Costa Rica. Seventy‐eight woody taxa from 32 families were found in the understory of 19 tubú windbreaks (five 4‐yr‐old, eight 12‐yr‐old, and six 20‐yr‐old). Mean size of tubú increased with stand age, but tubú was neither replacing itself nor spreading from the windbreaks. Density of other trees and shrubs ≥1 m was higher in 4‐yr‐old plots than in 20‐yr‐old plots, but density of other trees <1 m tall did not vary with windbreak age. Whereas richness of species ≥1 m was higher for 12‐ and 20‐yr‐old plots than for 4‐yr‐old plots, species richness of trees <1 m tall did not vary with windbreak stand age. Higher proportions of the woody colonists in 12‐ and 20‐yr‐old plots were animal dispersed than in 4‐yr‐old plots. Tubú windbreaks may undergo major changes in woody species composition, with Daphnopsis americana, Inga punctata, and Trichilia havanensis likely to predominate in the future.  相似文献

Chlorpyrifos (Spannit 48% e.c.; PBI) was applied at the recommended rate of 0.72 kg a.i./ha to two pastures on which either Brent Geese (Branta bernicla) or Canada Geese (Branta canadensis) were grazing. Observations of the number of geese and their behaviour were made on two or three occasions before spraying and four or five occasions after. Observations enabled an activity index and a count of pecks/minute to be calculated. No changes in the numbers or behaviour of the geese that could be attributed to chlorpyrifos application were found. Thorough searches were made for cadavers of the experimental fields, their environs and the roosts the day after other observations were made. Only one cadaver was found which had died as a result of swallowing angling equipment. Samples for chlorpyrifos residue analysis in the herbage and goose faeces showed no chlorpyrifos to be present prior to spraying the fields and that the chemical was present after spraying in both the herbage and faeces but fell to negligible levels within a few days. At least in the short-term, chlorpyrifos application to pasture appeared to have no perceptible or statistically significant effect on goose behaviour or well-being.  相似文献

Soil inorganic nitrogen pools, net mineralization and net nitrification rates were compared during the dry season along a chronosequence of upland (terra firme) forest, 3-, 9- and 20-year-old pastures in the western Brazilian Amazon Basin state of Rondônia to investigate the influence of forest conversion to pasture on soil nitrogen cycles. Surface soil (0 to 10 cm) from forest had larger extractable inorganic nitrogen pools than pasture soils. In the forest, NO 3 pools equaled or exceeded NH 4 + pools, while pasture inorganic N pools consisted almost exclusively of NH 4 + . Rates of net N mineralization and net nitrification in seven -day laboratory incubations were higher in the seven - day forest than in the pastures. Net N mineralization rates did not differ significantly among different-aged pastures, but net nitrification rates were significantly lower in the 20-year-old pasture. Higher net N mineralization and net nitrification rates were measured in laboratory and in situ incubations of sieved soil, compared with in situ incubations of intact soil cores. Rates calculated in seven-day incubations were higher than determined by longer incubations. Sieving may increase N mineralization and/or decrease N immobilization compared with intact cores. We concluded that 7-day laboratory incubation of sieved soil was the most useful index for comparing N availability across the chronosequence of forest and pasture sites. High net nitrification rates in forest soils suggest a potential for NO 3 losses either through leaching or gaseous emissions.  相似文献

Synthetic cow urine labelled with 35S and 15N was applied to large, undisturbed, monolith lysimeters sampled from subsoiled and non-subsoiled areas of a grass/clover pasture. For one year following the urine application, the lysimeters were subjected to a combination of natural rainfall, simulated rainfall and simulated flood irrigations. Drainage from the lysimeters was sampled regularly and monthly (approx.) pasture cuts taken. At the end of the year, the lysimeters were destructively sampled in 50 mm depth increments for soil analysis. Leachates, plant samples and soil samples were analysed for 35S and 15N.There were no significant differences in plant uptake of 35S and 15N between the subsoiled and nonsubsoiled lysimeters. Initially grass showed a higher degree of labelling than clover. Total amounts of 35S and 15N leached from the subsoiled lysimeters were approximately twice that leached from the nonsubsoiled ones. Leaching patterns differed substantially between the two nutrients.Total recoveries of 35S (in plants, leachates and soil extracts) accounted for 82% of the applied 35S for the subsoiled lysimeters and 72% for non-subsoiled ones. The unrecovered 35S is considered to have been incorporated into soil organic matter. Total recoveries of 15N (in plants, soil and leachates) were similar to those for 35S, but unrecovered 15N is attributed to loss by denitrification.  相似文献

We studied the conditions that permit the shrub, Cordia multispicata, to establish in Amazon pastures and the potential role of this shrub as a succession facilitator near the town of Paragominas, Pará State, Brazil. Local disturbances that reduce cover such as grazing and burning helped C. multispicata establish in pastures in active use. Germination of C. multispicata was significantly improved on sites subjected to simulated grazing and seedling growth was hastened following pasture burning. We found that below-ground competition, evaluated using root ingrowth cores, was reduced by burning and grazing. Recently abandoned pastures are frequently composed of a mix of forbs and grasses but as succession proceeds a mosaic of more discrete vegetation patches appears. At our site, a five-year-old abandoned pasture, grass patches (primarily Panicum maximum) and shrub patches (mainly C. multispicata) were common. We compared physical and biotic characteristics of zones dominated by C. multispicata and P. maximum and found: (1) the rain of bat and bird dispersed seeds of woody species was much greater in the zones of C. multispicata (92 seeds/m2/year) than in the patches of grass (6 seeds/m2/year); (2) the density of woody seedlings was eight times greater in the C. multispicata patches (0.65/m2) than in the zones of P. maximum (0.08 woody individuals/m2); (3) soil nutrient availability and litter nutrient concentrations were greater in the shrub zones than in the grass zones; and (4) photosynthetic photon flux density at the soil surface was generally more favorable for rainforest tree seedling growth in C. multispicata patches (16% of full sunlight) as compared to the grass zones (7.7% of full sun). We conclude that the shrub, C. multispicata, acts as a magnet, attracting volant seed vectors, and as a nurse plant, facilitating the establishment of woody species in abandoned Amazon pastures.  相似文献

Liquid cultures of 200 Fusarium isolates selected to represent the most common species found in autumn pasture (70 isolates) and in grain (130 isolates) grown in New Zealand were analysed for trichothecenes and related compounds. Production of butenolide, cyclonerodiol derivatives and culmorins was also measured. The principal trichothecenes produced were derivatives of either nivalenol (NIV), deoxynivalenol (DON) or scirpentriol (Sctol), in order of frequency. The principal trichothecene producing species were F. crookwellense, F. culmorum and F. graminearum. Isolates of the first two species were predominantly NIV-chemotypes with one or two isolates respectively as Sctol-chemotypes. F. graminearum showed equal quantities of NIV- and DON-chemotypes, with the DON-chemotypes producing primarily 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol (15-ADON).  相似文献

Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in mixed legume/grass pastures is reviewed along with the importance of transfer of fixed nitrogen (N) to associated grasses. Estimates of BNF depend on the method of measurement and some of the advantages and limitations of the main methods are outlined. The amounts of N fixed from atmospheric N2 in legume/grass pastures throughout the world is summarised and range from 13 to 682 kg N ha-1 yr-1. the corresponding range for grazed pastures, which have been assessed for white clover pastures only, is 55 to 296 kg N ha-1 yr-1.Biological nitrogen fixation by legumes in mixed pastures is influenced by three primary factors; legume persistence and production, soil N status, and competition with the associated grass(es). These factors and the interactions between them are discussed. Legume persistence, production and BNF is also influenced by many factors and this review centres on the important effects of soil moisture status, soil acidity, nutrition, and pests and disease.Soil N status interacts directly with BNF in the short and long term. In the short-term, increases in soil inorganic N occurs during dry conditions and where N fertiliser is used, and these will reduce BNF. In the long-term, BNF leads to accumulation of soil N, grass dominance, and reduced BNF. However, cyclical patterns of legume and grass dominance can occur due, at least in part, to temporal changes in plant-available N levels in soil. Thus, there is a dynamic relationship between legumes and grasses whereby uptake of soil N by grass reduces the inhibitory effect of soil N on BNF and competition by grasses reduces legume production and BNF. Factors affecting the competition between legumes and grasses are considered including grass species, grazing animals, and grazing or cutting management.Some fixed N is transferred from legumes to associated grasses. The amount of N transferred below-ground, predominantly through decomposition of legume roots and nodules, has been estimated at 3 to 102 kg N ha-1 yr-1 or 2 to 26% of BNF. In grazed pasture, N is also transferred above-ground via return in animal excreta and this can be of a similar magnitude to below-ground transfer.Increased BNF in mixed legume/grass pastures is being obtained through selection or breeding of legumes for increased productivity and/or to minimise effects of nutrient limitations, low soil moisture, soil acidity, and pests and disease. Ultimately, this will reduce the need to modify the pasture environment and increase the role of legumes in low-input, sustainable agriculture.  相似文献

Recent findings have highlighted the possibility of increased fluoride (F) concentrations in herbage through F taken up from soil via the plant root. This paper aimed to assess the risk of F concentrations reaching phytotoxic or zootoxic concentrations in pasture plants. Five plant species commonly found in improved pastures in Australia, the sown species subterranean clover (Trifolium subterranean) and cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata), and weeds barley grass (Hordeum leporinum), scotch thistle (Onopordum acanthium) and sorrel (Rumex acetosella) were grown in complete nutrient solutions with graded levels of added F to determine the effects of F activity in solution on phytotoxicity and uptake of F by their roots. A model was developed using data from these solution culture experiments and data from the literature. The model assessed uptake of F by plants grown over a range of soil pH values and determined the risk of F taken up through the plant roots reaching phytotoxic concentrations, or concentrations potentially injurious to grazing animals, in the plant shoots. Modelling data suggested that the plants studied would not accumulate phytotoxic concentrations of F in shoots or concentrations of F deleterious to grazing animals through root uptake in neutral pH agricultural soils. The risks from F addition to soils in phosphatic fertilisers leading to reduction in pasture growth or animal health are therefore low. However, in highly F-polluted soil, as the soil becomes more acidic or alkaline, the risk of zootoxic concentrations of F in shoots of plants would increase. Barriers to Forest Regeneration in an Abandoned Pasture in Puerto Rico   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9  
Sources of forest regeneration (soil seed bank, seed rain) and barriers to seedling establishment were examined in a recently abandoned pasture in eastern Puerto Rico. Few woody species were found in the soil seed bank or in the seed rain. The number of seeds and species in the seed rain and soil seed bank declined with distance from the adjacent secondary forest. Nine species naturally dispersed and colonized plots during the study, with the wind‐dispersed tree Tabebuia heterophylla being the predominant colonizer (91% of all seedlings). Barriers to seedling establishment were determined using a blocked field experiment with eleven woody species representative of a variety of life histories. Each species was planted under the pasture vegetation (control) or in areas where all vegetation was removed (removal). Germination was enhanced for four species in the control treatment, five species were not affected, and two species did not germinate under either treatment. Survival to 6 months was higher in the removal treatment for two species. Seedling biomass was greater in the removal treatment at 12 months for one species. Seed mass was a good predictor of germination success and final shoot biomass, but not survival. This study demonstrates that seeding recently abandoned pastures with a mix of known pioneer species may accelerate the rate of secondary succession, but some species will have to be planted in later successional stages in order to overcome strong barriers to establishment.  相似文献

Abandoned pastures and secondary forests are increasingly prominent features of tropical landscapes. Forest regrowth on abandoned pastures is generally slow and virtually limited to regeneration from seeds from external sources, since agricultural activities alter site conditions. We hypothesize that seed availability is a major limiting factor in forest recovery on abandoned pastures. This hypothesis was tested by studying the seed bank, seed rain, and seed predation in a small pasture (1 ha) situated in a forest‐pasture mosaic in northwestern Costa Rica. The tree seed density in the pasture seed bank was much lower (21/m2) than the density in the seed bank of a neighboring secondary forest (402/m2). Within a period of five weeks, 23 tree seeds entered the pasture by seed rain. This number is low compared to densities found in closed forests but higher than densities reported in other studies where virtually no seeds were found beyond 20 m from the forest edge. Possibly the small size of the pasture with seed sources nearby and the small‐scale landscape mosaic enhance seed dispersal. Predation limits the seed density in pastures, with 42% of the woody species consumed by predators. The low seed density in the seed bank, and hampered recruitment combined with significant losses, pose severe restrictions to forest recovery on abandoned pastures. Moderate land use, and small sized clearings with seed sources nearby may increase the pace of recovery. Nevertheless, forest establishment may still take a considerable time. Thus, enlarging the available pool of species may be a worthwhile management strategy.  相似文献
