We studied the effects of electromyographic biofeedback on measures of asthma severity in children. Fifteen children received biofeedback training to reduce facial tension, and 14 children, who served as controls, received biofeedback training to maintain facial tension at a stable level. Assignment to experimental condition was random. As a result of training, electromyographic levels decreased in children trained in facial relaxation and remained fairly constant in children trained in facial tension stability. Biofeedback training was augmented for children in both groups by having them practice their facial exercises at home. Each child's condition was followed for a five-month period subsequent to biofeedback training. Throughout the experiment, the following measures of asthma severity were monitored: lung function, self-rated asthma severity, medication usage, and frequency of asthma attacks. In addition, standardized measures of attitudes toward asthma, self-concept, and chronic anxiety were recorded at regular intervals. As compared to the facial stability subjects, the facial relaxation subjects exhibited higher pulmonary scores, more positive attitudes toward asthma, and lower chronic anxiety during the followup period. Subjects in the two groups, however, did not differ on self-rated asthma severity, medication usage, frequency of asthma attacks, or self-concept. Based on the improvements we observed in pulmonary, attitude, and anxiety measures, we concluded that biofeedback training for facial relaxation contributes to the self-control of asthma and would be a valuable addition to asthma self-management programs.This research was supported by NIH grant No. HL27402. ABSTRACT

Eveningness and sleep disturbances are considered as markers of Bipolar Disorder (BD) and influence mood and emotional or behavioral states. This study investigates the associations between circadian markers and sleep quality on residual depressive symptoms and inhibition/activation dimensions during the euthymic phase. A sample of 89 euthymic adult individuals with BD was assessed for circadian preference and typology using the Composite Scale of Morningness (CSM) and the Circadian Type Inventory (CTI) and for sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The Montgomery and Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) and the Multidimensional Assessment of Thymic States (MAThyS) were used to measure residual depressive symptoms and the inhibition/activation dimensions. We examined any associations between these parameters using correlations and path analyses. We identified significant associations between eveningness and poorer sleep quality that correlated to higher depressive residual symptoms and a global inhibition. The use of path analyses led us to conclude that poor sleep quality mediated the relationship between eveningness and either residual mood symptoms or behavioral inhibition (motivation, sensory perception, interpersonal interaction, and cognition). These factors should be considered in the clinical evaluation of individuals with BD, with a specific attention during the euthymic phase, in order to achieve the best functional outcome possible.  相似文献

摘要 目的:比较腔镜下Soave根治术与开腹改良Soave术治疗长段型先天性巨结肠(HD)患儿的疗效,观察两种术式对应激反应和控便功能的影响。方法:选取我院2017年4月~2020年9月期间收治的长段型HD患儿88例,根据手术方式的不同分为开腹组和微创组,例数分别为43例和45例。对比两组围术期指标、应激反应指标、控便功能和并发症发生情况。结果:微创组的术中失血量少于开腹组,手术时间、胃肠功能恢复时间、禁食时间、住院时间短于开腹组(P<0.05),两组肠管切除长度组间对比无统计学差异(P>0.05)。两组患儿术后1 d心率(HR)、平均动脉压(MAP)较术前升高,血氧饱和度(SpO2)较术前下降,但微创组HR、MAP低于开腹组,SpO2高于开腹组(P<0.05)。两组患儿术后1年大便性状、排便次数、污粪、需要治疗(灌肠、药物、尿布)评分及Heikkinen总分均较术前升高,且微创组高于开腹组(P<0.05)。微创组的近期并发症总发生率和远期并发症总发生率均低于开腹组(P<0.05)。结论:与开腹改良Soave术相比,采用腔镜下Soave根治术治疗长段型HD患儿可缩短手术时间、禁食时间、住院时间、胃肠功能恢复时间,减少手术创伤,减轻机体应激反应,改善患儿控便功能,同时还可降低并发症发生率,效果较好。  相似文献

Throughout arable land that was devoted to chickpea (Cicer arietinum L. (Family: Leguminosae) production, Ascochyta blight (Ascochyta rabiei (Pass.) L. (Order: Sphaeriales; Family: Mycosphaerellaceae) is a widespread disease that would lead to significant loss of chickpea yield. This study's purpose was to explain the responses of a resistant chickpea cultivar (ICC 12004) and a susceptible cultivar (Bivanij) in terms of disease resistance, disease symptoms appearance and expression pattern of two defence‐related genes (DEF0442 and Snakin2) after the Azospirillum brasilense seeds inoculation. In this research, the Snakin2 gene expression was affected by Azospirillum inoculation. The gene expression has been enhanced in plants inoculated with Azospirillum in both cultivars in comparison with non‐inoculated plants, but this change in ICC 12004 and Bivanij were significant and non‐significant, respectively. Although, Azospirillum would up regulate the DEF0422 gene expression in ICC 12004, but it would down regulate the expression of this gene in Bivanij. A. brasilense inoculation decreased the A. rabiei disease severity, regardless of the chickpea cultivar. Bivanij still could be classified as susceptible, even if treated with A. brasilense.  相似文献

Since Korean mistletoe (Viscum album) has been used for alleviating metabolic diseases, it may also prevent the impairment of energy, glucose, lipid, and bone metabolisms in an estrogen-deficient animal model. We determined that long-term consumption of Korean mistletoe water extract (KME) can alleviate menopausal symptoms such as hot flush, increased abdominal fat mass, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, and decreased bone mineral density in ovariectomized (OVX) rats fed a high-fat diet, and explored the mechanisms of the effects. OVX rats were divided into four groups and fed high-fat diets supplemented with either 0.6% dextrin (control), 0.2% lyophilized KME + 0.4% dextrin (KME-L), or 0.6% lyophilized KME (KME-H). Sham rats were fed with the high-fat diets with 0.6% dextrin as a normal-control without estrogen deficiency. After eight weeks, OVX rats exhibited impaired energy, glucose and lipid metabolism, and decreased uterine and bone masses. KME-L did not alleviate energy dysfunction. However, KME-H lowered serum levels of total-, LDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides and elevated serum HDL-cholesterol levels in OVX rats with dyslipidemia, to similar levels as normal-control rats. Furthermore, KME-H improved HOMA-IR, an indicator of insulin resistance, in OVX rats. Surprisingly, KME-H fed rats had greater lean mass in the abdomen and leg without differences in fat mass but neither dosage of KME altered bone mineral density in the lumbar spine and femur. The increased lean mass was related to greater phosphorylation of mTOR and eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E-binding protein 1 (4E-BP1) in the quadriceps muscles. Hepatic triglyceride contents were lowered with KME-H in OVX rats by increasing carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1 (CPT-1) expression and decreasing fatty acid synthase (FAS) and sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c) expression. In conclusion, KME may be useful for preventing some menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, dyslipidemia, hepatic steatosis, and loss of muscle mass in post-menopausal women.  相似文献

To investigate possible health effects of mobile phone use, we conducted a double-blind, cross-over provocation study to confirm whether subjects with mobile phone related symptoms (MPRS) are more susceptible than control subjects to the effect of electromagnetic fields (EMF) emitted from base stations. We sent questionnaires to 5,000 women and obtained 2,472 valid responses from possible candidates; from these, we recruited 11 subjects with MPRS and 43 controls. There were four EMF exposure conditions, each of which lasted 30 min: continuous, intermittent, and sham exposure with and without noise. Subjects were exposed to EMF of 2.14 GHz, 10 V/m (W-CDMA), in a shielded room to simulate whole-body exposure to EMF from base stations, although the exposure strength we used was higher than that commonly received from base stations. We measured several psychological and cognitive parameters pre- and post-exposure, and monitored autonomic functions. Subjects were asked to report on their perception of EMF and level of discomfort during the experiment. The MPRS group did not differ from the controls in their ability to detect exposure to EMF; nevertheless they consistently experienced more discomfort, regardless of whether or not they were actually exposed to EMF, and despite the lack of significant changes in their autonomic functions. Thus, the two groups did not differ in their responses to real or sham EMF exposure according to any psychological, cognitive or autonomic assessment. In conclusion, we found no evidence of any causal link between hypersensitivity symptoms and exposure to EMF from base stations.  相似文献

Objective: To determine whether regular aerobic exercise improves symptoms of sleep‐disordered breathing in overweight children, as has been shown in adults. Research Methods and Procedures: Healthy but overweight (BMI ≥85th percentile) 7‐ to 11‐year‐old children were recruited from public schools for a randomized controlled trial of exercise effects on diabetes risk. One hundred children (53% black, 41% male) were randomly assigned to a control group (n = 27), a low‐dose exercise group (n = 36), or a high‐dose exercise group (n = 37). Exercise groups underwent a 13 ± 1.5 week after‐school program that provided 20 or 40 minutes per day of aerobic exercise (average heart rate = 164 beats per minute). Group changes were compared on BMI z‐score and four Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire scales: Snoring, Sleepiness, Behavior, and a summary scale, Sleep‐Related Breathing Disorders. Analyses were adjusted for age. Results: Both the high‐dose and low‐dose exercise groups improved more than the control group on the Snoring scale. The high‐dose exercise group improved more than the low‐dose exercise and control groups on the summary scale. No group differences were found for changes on Sleepiness, Behavior, or BMI z‐score. At baseline, 25% screened positive for sleep‐disordered breathing; half improved to a negative screen after intervention. Discussion: Regular vigorous exercise can improve snoring, a symptom of sleep‐disordered breathing, in overweight children. Aerobic exercise programs may be valuable for prevention and treatment of sleep‐disordered breathing in overweight children.  相似文献
