Recent increases in the frequency and size of desert wildfires bring into question the impacts of fire on desert invertebrate communities. Furthermore, consumer communities can strongly impact invertebrates through predation and top‐down effects on plant community assembly. We experimentally applied burn and rodent exclusion treatments in a full factorial design at sites in both the Mojave and Great Basin deserts to examine the impact that fire and rodent consumers have on invertebrate communities. Pitfall traps were used to survey invertebrates from April through September 2016 to determine changes in abundance, richness, and diversity of invertebrate communities in response to fire and rodent treatments. Generally speaking, rodent exclusion had very little effect on invertebrate abundance or ant abundance, richness or diversity. The one exception was ant abundance, which was higher in rodent access plots than in rodent exclusion plots in June 2016, but only at the Great Basin site. Fire had little effect on the abundances of invertebrate groups at either desert site, with the exception of a negative effect on flying‐forager abundance at our Great Basin site. However, fire reduced ant species richness and Shannon's diversity at both desert sites. Fire did appear to indirectly affect ant community composition by altering plant community composition. Structural equation models suggest that fire increased invasive plant cover, which negatively impacted ant species richness and Shannon's diversity, a pattern that was consistent at both desert sites. These results suggest that invertebrate communities demonstrate some resilience to fire and invasions but increasing fire and spread of invasive due to invasive grass fire cycles may put increasing pressure on the stability of invertebrate communities.  相似文献

Woody, evergreen shrublands are the archetypal community in mediterranean-type ecosystems, and these communities are profoundly changed when they undergo vegetation-type conversion (VTC) to become annual, herb-dominated communities. Recently, VTC has occurred throughout southern California chaparral shrublands, likely with changes in important ecosystem functions. The mechanisms that lead to VTC and subsequent changes to ecosystem processes are important to understand as they have regional and global implications for ecosystem services, climate change, land management, and policy. The main drivers of VTC are altered fire regimes, aridity, and anthropogenic disturbance. Some changes to ecosystem function are certain to occur with VTC, but their magnitudes are unclear, whereas other changes are unpredictable. I present two hypotheses: (1) VTC leads to warming that creates a positive feedback promoting additional VTC, and (2) altered nitrogen dynamics create negative feedbacks and promote an alternative stable state in which communities are dominated by herbs. The patterns described for California are mostly relevant to the other mediterranean-type shrublands of the globe, which are biodiversity hotspots and threatened by VTC. This review examines the extent and causes of VTC, ecosystem effects, and future research priorities.  相似文献

The seed progeny of smooth brome (Bromus inermis Leyss.) were evaluated over a year for their viability, mutation rate, resistance to radiation and antioxidant status in response to chronic radiation exposure. Bromus inermis is found in the Eastern Ural Radioactive Trace (EURT) area and the background territories (surrounding territories that are used as controls as they only have natural background radiation). The absorbed doses by smooth brome from the EURT area were 1.5–18.5 times higher compared to background locations for parent plants and 1.1–11.6 times higher for the seed embryos. There are predictable and asynchronous changes in the survival of shoots and root growth rate between background populations and chronically irradiated samples. The provocative dose of 250 Gy is more damaging in the winter months, than in the summer and autumn. The frequency of anomalies in shoots varied in different months, with the biggest rate of mutation recorded in physiologically harsher period (autumn–winter). There is no correlation between resulting survival rate of shoots and their resistance to radiation. The intense activity of the antioxidant systems (estimated by the content of low molecular weight antioxidants) allowed faster growth of the shoots and reduced the number of abnormalities seen in development.  相似文献

Ustilago bullata is frequently encountered on the exotic winter annual grass Bromus tectorum in western North America. To evaluate the biocontrol potential of this seedling-infecting pathogen, we examined the effect of temperature on the infection process. Teliospore germination rate increased linearly with temperature from 2.5 to 25°C, with significant among-population differences. It generally matched or exceeded host seed germination rate over the range 10-25°C, but lagged behind at lower temperatures. Inoculation trials demonstrated that the pathogen can achieve high disease incidence when temperatures during infection range 20-30°C. Disease incidence was drastically reduced at 2.5°C. Pathogen populations differed in their ability to infect at different temperatures, but none could infect in the cold. This may limit the use of this organism for biocontrol of B. tectorum to habitats with reliable autumn seedling emergence, because cold temperatures are likely to limit infection of later-emerging seedling cohorts.  相似文献

Poa secunda Presl. is one of the few native perennial bunchgrasses in the Intermountain West to persist and co-occur with the invasive annual Bromus tectorum L. following widespread overgrazing and frequent wildfires. To identify potential mechanisms responsible for the co-occurrence of P. secunda with B. tectorum, respiration rates (\(R_{\operatorname{CO} _2 }\)) of eight populations were measured at 10, 20, and 30°C on laboratory-grown plants by infrared gas analysis. In addition, \(R_{\operatorname{CO} _2 }\) and metabolic heat rates (q) of nine field-grown populations were measured at 10 and 20°C using calorimetry on eight dates over a growing season to compare temperature-dependent physiology of P. secunda with previous published patterns for B. tectorum. Laboratory respiration rates of P. secunda populations suggest considerable intraspecific variation in physiological response to temperature. Changes in slope for \(R_{\operatorname{CO} _2 }\) and q over the growing season were steeper at 20 than at 10°C , suggesting that P. secunda populations are more capable of maintaining steady rates of metabolism at low than at high temperatures. However, growth rates of P. secunda were relatively lower than those for B. tectorum at 10°C. Calculations of growth rates and efficiency of converting substrate carbon into biomass of P. secunda consistently remained positive, while those for B. tectorum rapidly declined at temperatures above 10°C. These data suggest that P. secunda co-occurrence with B. tectorum over a broad range of plant communities in the Intermountain West may be partially explained by having a similar ability to maintain positive and stable growth rate at low temperature. In addition, the greater ability of P. secunda to maintain growth rates and metabolic efficiency at higher temperatures than B. tectorum may allow this perennial grass to compensate for the greater relative growth rates of B. tectorum at low temperature.  相似文献

An efficient system for the analysis of the total alkaloids extracted from leaves of Mitragyna inermis (Willd.) O. Kuntze (Rubiaceae) by HPLC using a reversed-phase column is described. The chromatographic conditions allowed the separation of indole and oxindole alkaloids in leaf extracts, and the quantification of uncarine D in samples collected in Burkina Faso and Mali. The HPLC method described was validated for its specificity, linearity and precision using an internal standard (naphthalene). The concentrations of uncarine D in various extracts were compared with their in vitro anti-plasmodial activity. The anti-proliferative activity on chloroquine-resistant strain (W2) of Plasmodium falciparum was not correlated with the concentration of uncarine D in leaves.  相似文献

Biological soil crusts dominated by lichens are common components of shrub-steppe ecosystems in northwestern US. We conducted growth chamber experiments to investigate the effects of these crusts on seed germination and initial seedling establishment of two annual grasses; the highly invasive exotic Bromus tectorum L. and the native Vulpia microstachys Nutt. We recorded germination time courses on bare soil and two types of biological soil crusts; one composed predominantly of the lichen Diploschistes muscorum (Scop.) R. Sant. (lichen crust) and the other comprised of an assortment of lichens and mosses (mixed crust). Final germination on the lichen crust for both grass species was about a third of that on the bare soil surface. Mean germination time (MGT) was 3–4 days longer on the lichen crust compared with the bare soil. In contrast, there was no difference in germination percentage or MGT between the mixed crust and bare soil, and results were similar for both grass species. For both species, root penetration of germinating seeds on the lichen crust was lower than on the bare soil or mixed crust surfaces. The combined effects of the lichen crust on germination and root penetration resulted in an overall reduction in seedling establishment of 78% for V. microstachys and 85% for B. tectorum relative to the bare soil treatment. Our results clearly demonstrate that lichen-dominated biological soil crust can inhibit germination and root penetration, but the extent of these effects depends on the composition of the crust. 研究了沙埋对浑善达克沙地植物群落中多年生禾草无芒雀麦种子萌发、出苗和幼苗生长的影响.结果表明:无芒雀麦种子能在深度≤12cm的沙埋中萌发,≤8cm的沙埋中出苗.在此范围内,随着沙埋深度的增加,无芒雀麦种子的萌发率和出苗率逐渐降低.沙埋深度在植株高度的33%时,无芒雀麦1周龄和2周龄幼苗均全部存活,且总生物量≥对照(未沙埋幼苗);当沙埋深度增至植株高度的66%时,1周龄和2周龄幼苗的存活率分别降至70%和25%,生长也受到抑制;而遭受全部沙埋时,1周龄和2周龄幼苗均不能存活.遭受沙埋后,无芒雀麦幼苗分配较多的生物量用于地上部分的生长,其生物量分配模式改变可能是无芒雀麦幼苗对沙埋环境的重要适应对策.  相似文献

1999 年7 月至2000 年6 月采用访问和样线法对浙江舟山群岛25 个岛上的獐的分布进行调查。结果显示獐在该地区主要分布在北纬30°26′以南, 东经122°24′以西, 且集中在西南诸岛上。较大岛屿獐的分布比例较高, 10 km2以上的岛屿81.25 %有獐分布。并且其周围小岛獐的分布比例也较高。所调查的5 个距离舟山本岛3 km范围内的小岛均有獐分布。獐所分布的岛屿随着离大陆和本岛距离的增加而减少。獐主要栖息在山丘上, 但夜里常到农田觅食。21.47 %有人居住岛上有獐分布。对獐分布影响较大的因素是离本岛和大陆的距离及岛屿面积; 其次是人类活动, 主要是偷猎; 淡水水源影响不大; 分布与岛屿形状无关。獐可以在岛屿之间迁游, 从而影响分布。獐在舟山地区可能是原有分布的, 几次地质变化可能对其产生一定影响。  相似文献

Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) deposition causes shifts in vegetation types as well as species composition of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and other soil microorganisms. A greenhouse experiment was done to determine whether there are feedbacks between N-altered soil inoculum and growth of a dominant native shrub and an invasive grass species in southern California. The region is experiencing large-scale loss of Artemisia californica shrublands and replacement by invasive annual grasses under N deposition. Artemisia californica and Bromus madritensis ssp. rubens were grown with soil inoculum from experimental plots in a low N deposition site that had (1) N-fertilized and (2) unfertilized soil used for inoculum, as well as (3) high-N soil inoculum from a site exposed to atmospheric N deposition for four decades. All treatments plus a nonmycorrhizal control were given two levels of N fertilizer solution. A. californica biomass was reduced by each of the three inocula compared to uninoculated controls under at least one of the two N fertilizer solutions. The␣inoculum from the N-deposition site caused the greatest growth depressions. By contrast, B.␣madritensis biomass increased with each of the three inocula under at least one, or both, of the N solutions. The different growth responses of the two plant species may be related to the types of AM fungal colonization. B. madritensis was mainly colonized by a fine mycorrhizal endophyte, while A. californica had primarily coarse endophytes. Furthermore, A. californica had a high level of septate, nonmycorrhizal root endophytes, while B. madritensis overall had low levels of these endophytes. The negative biomass response of A. californica seedlings to high N-deposition inoculum may in part explain its decline; a microbially-mediated negative feedback may occur in this system that causes poor␣seedling growth and establishment of A.␣californica in sites subject to N deposition and B. madritensis invasion.  相似文献
