Substrate preferences of juvenile, hatchery-reared lake sturgeon, Acipenser fulvescens, from a Wisconsin population were examined relative to water temperature and velocity, fish size and time of day. Given the choice of a sand, gravel, rock or smooth plastic bottom, all sturgeon were strongly attracted to the sand substrate. Water temperature did not affect substrate preference, however small sturgeon (13.5cm mean FL) acclimated to 19°C were more active than those tested in 6°C water. Small sturgeon, under all conditions, were less sedentary in the early morning and late evening hours than during the daytime. Preference of small sturgeon for sand was slightly stronger when a current of 5cmsec-1 was present. Substrate preference of larger sturgeon (24.3cm mean FL) was not affected by any of the parameters examined. In general, hatchery-reared lake sturgeon showed similar behaviors (with respect to substrate selection) as those previously described for the same population in the wild, making it possible that substrate preferences have a genetic component and likely that hatchery rearing does not alter instinctive behavior.  相似文献

Natural reproduction of pallid sturgeon Scaphirhynchus albus has been limited for decades and a recruitment bottleneck is hypothesized to occur during the larval stage of development. In this study, we evaluated the effects of water velocity and temperature on the swimming activity, energy use, settling behaviour and mortality of endogenously feeding larvae. The swimming activity of drifting sturgeon larvae (i.e., fish exhibiting negative rheotaxis) increased at low water velocity. In subsequent experiments, we observed greater energy depletion and resultant mortality of larvae in no-flow environments (0 cm s−1) compared to tanks with water velocity ranging from 3.5 to 8.3 cm s−1. The growth rate of drifting larvae was positively related to water temperature (18.7–23.3°C), but reduced growth rate at low water temperature (18.7°C) resulted in protracted development that extended average drift duration by ~4 days compared to larvae reared at 23.3°C. This study provides evidence that cooler summer water temperatures, characteristic of present-day conditions in the upper Missouri River, can reduce larval development and extend both the drift duration and distance requirements of S. albus. Moreover, if dispersed into low velocity environments, such as in reservoir headwaters, larvae may experience increased mortality owing to a mismatch between early life stage drift requirements and habitat conditions in the river. Manipulation of water releases to increase seasonal water temperature below dams may aid survival of S. albus larvae by shortening the time and distance spent drifting.  相似文献

Summary The neurohypophysis of sexually mature male and female Acipenser güldenstädti Brandt and Acipenser stellatus Pallas was studied light and electron microscopically. The recessus hypophysei lined with ependymal cells of two main types, narrow and wide, are in the center of the neurohypophysial roots. Processes from both cell types run radially to the basement membrane of the connective tissue layers abutting on the hypophysial intermediate lobe. Protrusions penetrating deep into the recessus hypophyseus are found in the apical parts of the wide cells. Pituicytes are rare in the neurohypophysis. The ultrastructure of both ependymal cell types and of the pituicytes is described. Nonmyelinated Gomori-positive (peptidergic) neurosecretory A1 and A2 type fibres and their terminals containing elementary neurosecretory granules (1400–1800 Å and 1000–1400 Å respectively) are the main structural elements of the neurohypophysis. Some dark and single myelinated neurosecretory fibres have been found. The adrenergic fibres (type B) were described earlier (Polenov et al., 1972a). The structural peculiarities of the neurohypophysis are discussed in functional and comparative-morphological terms.  相似文献

Summary The distribution of adrenergic and peptidergic (Gomori-positive) structures of the hypophysial neuro-intermediate complex in Acipenseridae has been studied by means of light, fluorescence, and electron microscopy. Adrenergic fibres (B-fibres) and their terminals have been detected in the neurohypophysis of these fishes. The terminal swellings of B-fibres as well as the terminals of the neurosecretory peptidergic fibres (A1 and A2) make contact with the basement membrane of the connective tissue layer separating the neurohypophysis from the intermediate lobe. Capillaries are situated within this layer and, therefore, the main part of the fibre terminals is in contact with the pericapillary space. The release of catecholamines from the adrenergic terminals into the capillaries connected with the general circulation is supposed. The diffusion of catecholamines through the connective tissue layer into the parenchyma of the intermediate lobe is also suggested. Hence, the glandular activity of the intermediate lobe seems to be under the dual control of adrenergic and peptidergic elements of the hypothalamus.The authors wish to express their deep appreciation to G. Gonad development and sex differentiation from embryos to 594‐day‐old individuals were investigated in farmed Acipenser naccarii using light and transmission electron microscopy. The migrating primordial germ cells first appear along the dorsal wall of the body cavity in embryos 1.5 days before hatching. The gonadal ridge, containing a few primary primordial germ cells (PGC‐1) surrounded by enveloping cells, appears in 16‐day‐old larvae. At 60 days, the undifferentiated gonad is lamellar and PGC‐1 multiply, producing PGC‐2. In 105‐day‐old juveniles, a distinct germinal area with advanced PGC‐2 appears on the lateral side near the mesogonium and the first blood vessels are visible. At 180 days, putative ovaries with a notched gonadal epithelium and putative testes with a smooth one appear, together with adipose tissue on the distal side. In 210‐day‐old juveniles, active proliferation of germ cells begins in the putative ovaries, whereas putative testes still contain only a few germ cells. The onset of meiosis and reorganization of stromal tissue occurs in ovaries of 292‐day‐old individuals. Ovaries with developed lamellae enclosing early oocyte clusters and follicles with perinucleolar oocytes occur at 594 days. Meiotic stages are never found, even in anastomozing tubular testes of 594‐day‐old individuals. Steroid producing cells are detected in the undifferentiated gonad and in the differentiated ones of both sexes. Anatomical differentiation of the gonad precedes cytological differentiation and female differentiation largely precedes that of the male. Gonad development and differentiation are also associated with structural changes of connective tissue, viz. collagen‐rich areas are massive in developing testes and reduced in ovaries. J. While the proliferation of the species‐rich teleost fish has been ascribed to an ancient genome duplication event at the base of this group, the broader impact of polyploidy on fish evolution and diversification remains poorly understood. Here, we investigate the association between polyploidy and diversification in several fish lineages: the sturgeons (Acipenseridae: Acipenseriformes), the botiid loaches (Botiidae: Cypriniformes), Cyprininae fishes (Cyprinidae: Cypriniformes) and the salmonids (Salmonidae: Salmoniformes). Using likelihood‐based evolutionary methodologies, we co‐estimate speciation and extinction rates associated with polyploid vs. diploid fish lineages. Family‐level analysis of Acipenseridae and Botiidae revealed no significant difference in diversification rates between polyploid and diploid relatives, while analysis of the subfamily Cyprininae revealed higher polyploid diversification. Additionally, order‐level analysis of the polyploid Salmoniformes and its diploid sister clade, the Esociformes, did not support a significantly different net diversification rate between the two groups. Taken together, our results suggest that polyploidy is generally not associated with decreased diversification in fish – a pattern that stands in contrast to that previously observed in plants. While there are notable differences in the time frame examined in the two studies, our results suggest that polyploidy is associated with different diversification patterns in these two major branches of the eukaryote tree of life.  相似文献

根据2004年6月至8月和2005年6月至8月在长江口崇明岛东滩水域插网所获取的鱼类样本,对东滩水域中华鲟(Acipenser sinensis)幼鱼和其它6种主要经济鱼类的食性、食物竞争状况进行了研究。结果表明:中华鲟、窄体舌鳎(Cynoglissus gracilis)为底栖生物食性;中国花鲈(Lateolabrax maculatus)为游泳生物食性;刀鲚(Coilia ectenes)和凤鲚(Coilia mystus)为浮游动物食性;鲻(Mygil cephalus)和鮻(Liza haematochiela)为腐屑(有机碎屑)食性。中华鲟幼鱼及6种主要经济鱼类食性按照相对重要性指标(IRI)大小排列:中华鲟(IRI):鱼类端足类多毛类蟹类;窄体舌鳎(IRI):虾类瓣鳃类鱼类;中国花鲈(IRI):鱼类虾类等足类蟹类;刀鲚(IRI):糠虾类虾类桡足类鱼类;凤鲚(IRI):糠虾类桡足类虾类鱼类;鲻(IRI):有机碎屑底栖藻类瓣鳃类桡足类;鮻(IRI):有机碎屑底栖藻类瓣鳃类桡足类。长江口崇明东滩中华鲟与6种经济鱼类饵料重叠系数显示,中华鲟与窄体舌鳎的饵料重叠系数达到了0.4,而与其余5种鱼类的饵料重叠系数均小于0.12。这表明窄体舌鳎对中华鲟幼鱼的食物有一定的竞争力,其余5种鱼类对中华鲟幼鱼的食物竞争强度较低。  相似文献

Although sterlet sturgeon is a valuable candidate for aquaculture development, information regarding the nutrient requirements of this species is limited. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to determine the optimum protein level required by sterlet sturgeon fingerlings. Groups of fingerlings (mean initial body weight ± SD: 7.02 ± 0.02 g; N = 3) were assigned to one of the six dietary protein levels at 29.1%, 39.1%, 46.8%, 49.2%, 53.7%, and 57.6% on a dry matter basis. Isocaloric (18.3 ± 0.2 kJ GE/g diet) semi-purified diets were prepared using white fish meal and casein as the major sources of protein. After the 8-week feeding trial, the fingerlings fed the 49.2% protein diet exhibited the best results in terms of weight gain, feed efficiency, and whole-body nutrient composition (crude protein, crude lipid, gross energy, and amino acid contents), whereas those fed the 53.7% and 57.6% protein diets showed poor performance. Application of the two-slope straight broken-line and quadratic models on the dataset of weight gain revealed the optimum protein level to be 45.9% and 44.1%, respectively. Based on the model selection criteria, including the adjusted coefficient of correlation and corrected Akaike information criterion, the protein level (44.1%) estimated using the quadratic model was more accurate than that obtained using another model (45.9%). Taken together, 44.1% protein level (18.3 kJ GE/g diet on dry matter basis) resulted in the optimal growth of the sterlet sturgeon fingerlings (initial body weight: approximately 7 g).  相似文献

Abstract. The historical biogeography of sturgeons is explored using information from palaeogeography, palaeontology and phylogenetic interrelationships. The integration of information from these diverse sources indicates that sturgeons reached a wide Laurasian distribution in the Cretaceous and Tertiary by freshwater and coastal dispersal routes across land connections and along newly forming continental margins. The fossil record also suggests a considerable degree of morphological stasis and also supports an estuarine habit, and perhaps diadromy, as an old and conserved life history trait. While a ‘centre of origin’ for sturgeons remains elusive, phylogenetic relationships indicate that diversification appears to have been associated with fragmentation of biota, and of landmasses and basins, by late Tertiary geological and climatic phenomena, such as orogeny and unequal glaciation over North America, the desiccation of central Asia and alteration of its drainages, and the formation of discrete Ponto-Caspian basins by the fragmentation of the Paratethys. Amphi-oceanic distributions of certain species (Acipenser medirostris Ayres) and sister taxa (e.g. A. oxyrhynchus Mitchill and A. sturio L.) are explained by coastal dispersal and subsequent vicariance by geological (sea-floor spreading and development of new continental margins) and climatic (Pliocene cooling) changes during the Tertiary. An hypothesis is developed for the relationships of the North American sturgeons and their potential relationships with the Siberian sturgeon A. baeri. Late Tertiary climatic and geological phenomena are hypothesized as mediators of vicariance and subsequent diversification of these acipenserids. It appears that although acipenserids are a geologically old group, the historical biogeography of surviving lineages is best explained by more recent geological and climatic changes.  相似文献

Three Acipenseridae species live in the rivers and marine waters of the Khabarovsk Territory, Russia: Sakhalin sturgeon, Acipenser mikadoi, Amur sturgeon, A. schrenckii, and kaluga, Huso dauricus. We review the general biology and life history of each species, including their historic and current distributions, and examine current paleogeographic theories to outline the possible origin and evolution of these three species in the Amur River, Sea of Okhotsk, and Sea of Japan biogeographic province. Apparently, these species have evolved during distinct geologic time periods, which has reinforced the reproductive isolation of these species although hybridization does occur. They have convergently adapted to the unique environmental conditions of the Amur River and Russian Maritime regions, and yet developed behavioral adaptations to reduce competition between species. Sakhalin sturgeon is the least studied species among anadromous sturgeon in the world. This species is highly migratory and spends the majority of its life in the ocean only returning to natal rivers to spawn. Amur sturgeon and kaluga are distributed throughout the Amur River basin and the estuary and share many life history traits. They are both represented by distinct morphs. Additionally, we present size and weight relationships to estimate the growth of Amur sturgeon and kaluga. All three species have suffered declines in abundance due to over fishing and their contemporary distributions have contracted compared to their historic ranges. We identify gaps in knowledge and suggest further research useful for guiding management of each species.  相似文献
