Laboratory experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that widelyforaging generalist lizard,Eumeces okadae, visually discriminates palatable queen ants from unpalatable worker ants. The workers ofCamponotus japonicus andLasius niger were rejected on sight, while the queens of both species were eaten with little prior chemical examination by tongue flicks
or licks. Comparison of the lizards' responses towards the workers and wingless queens of similar size indicated that neither
body size nor presence or absence of wings accounted for difference in responses toward the 2 ant castes. The lizards probably

Crossing experiments and food-choice tests show that two sympatric species of phytophagous ladybird beetles, Epilachna niponica and E. yasutomii, are reproductively isolated by host-plant specificity. Adult beetles selected their natural hosts when given choices, though some accepted the host of the other species when no choice was offered. In each species, survival of larvae to the second instar was significantly higher on their own host plant. No evidence for sexual isolation, gametic isolation, hybrid inviability, or reduced hybrid fertility was detected. Reproductive isolation by host specificity is an important prerequisite for certain models of sympatric speciation. Although the present example supports the plausibility of such models, an allopatric origin of host-plant specificity cannot be discounted. 相似文献

The electrical potential distribution has been measured preciselyaround the root surface of the bean sprout Vigna mungo (L) Hepper.A large negative potential well was found at the growth portionof the root tip. Also, in the matured region of the root, wefound a negative potential well at an unspecified position inspite of the fact that nothing was detected on the smooth surface.A lateral root emerge was found to have initiated after 1520hours just at the position corresponding to the potential well.With the expectation that these potentials can be elucidatedbased on the transport of ions which are released or absorbedby the root as a result of cell activity, we precisely measuredthe concentrations of major ion species (K+, H+, and Cl)around the root. Molecular cloning of cDNAs encoding alpha-subunits of guanine nucleotide-binding regulatory proteins (G-proteins) has revealed the existence of nine species of alpha-subunits. We have identified two additional G-protein alpha-subunits, which we refer to as GL1 alpha and GL2 alpha, by isolating bovine liver cDNA clones that cross-hybridized at reduced stringency with bovine Gi1 alpha-subunit cDNA. The deduced amino acid sequences of GL1 alpha and GL2 alpha share 83% identity with each other and show 45-55% identity with those of other known G-protein alpha-subunits. Both GL1 alpha and GL2 alpha lack a consensus site for ADP-ribosylation by pertussis toxin. Messenger RNA corresponding to GL2 alpha was detected in all tissues examined, but GL1 alpha mRNA was detected only in liver, lung, and kidney. Antiserum prepared against a synthetic pentadecapeptide corresponding to the deduced carboxyl terminus of GL2 alpha specifically reacted with a 40-kDa protein in mouse liver, brain, lung, heart, kidney, and spleen. The amount of the 40-kDa protein was highest in brain and lung. We suggest that GL1 alpha and GL2 alpha are new members of a subfamily of pertussis toxin-insensitive G-proteins. 相似文献

Both activities of NADH- and NADPH-linked aquacobalamin reductases were found in some human tissues, liver, kidney pancreas, heart, spleen, lung, cerebrum, cerebellum, adrenal glands, stomach, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, colon and bone marrow. 2. Human liver contained both enzymes with higher specific activities than any other tissues. 3. The liver NADH-linked enzyme was distributed in both mitochondrial (approx. 60%) and microsomal (40%) fractions; similar to the distribution of the NADPH-linked enzyme, but of which 40% activity was found in the mitochondria and the remaining activity was recovered in the microsomes. 4. The results suggest that the synthetic systems of the cobalamin coenzymes occur in both mitochondria and microsomes of human liver. 相似文献

The complete nucleotide sequence of the phosphoprotein (P) gene of the Yamagata-1 strain of a defective subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) virus was determined. Comparison with the P gene of the Edmonston strain of measles virus (MV) revealed 44 differences of which 23 nucleotides substitutions were identical with those revealed between other SSPE viruses and MV (Cattaneo et al. (1989) Virology 173, 415-425). The consensus sequence of the G insertion site was completely conserved, whereas mRNAs with one or three non-templated G residue insertions were found in addition to the mRNA of the exact genome copy. As a result of the frameshift downstream of the site of G insertion, the cysteine-rich V protein was predicted from the one G-inserted mRNA besides the P and C proteins predicted from the genome-copied mRNA. 相似文献
