Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a secondary toxic metabolite synthesized by Aspergillus or Penicillium species, which can contaminate various crops. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified OTA as a group 2B possible human carcinogen. The aim of the present study was to assess OTA concentrations in tissues of wild boar (Sus scrofa L.) from Tuscany (Italy). Over a period of 2 years, samples of muscle, liver, and kidney from 48 wild boars were collected and concentrations of OTA were determined by enzymatic digestion (ED) coupled to high-performance liquid chromatography with a fluorescence detector (HPLC-FLD). The highest concentrations of OTA were found in the kidneys of the 48 wild boars analyzed. No difference in concentrations was found based on years of collection and sex while a significantly higher OTA concentration was found in the kidney of the young wild boars with respect to the adult one. Monitoring the quality of meat destined for transformation is a priority in order to decrease the possibility of toxin carry-over to humans. The survival and growth of natural beech regeneration after canopy removal is variable and little is known about ecophysiological mechanisms of these responses. Biomass, nonstructural carbohydrate levels and nitrogen concentrations were measured in an Italian population of European beech seedlings. Seedlings were container-grown in two types of soil, organic and mineral, collected at the study site. The seedlings were grown under three light treatments: under full beech canopy (understory), exposed to full sun only during midday (gap) and under full sun (clearing). Leaf gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters were measured and then foliar analyses were conducted for chlorophyll, phenolic and tannin levels. Biomass and allocation were significantly affected by light and soil treatments. The clearing seedlings and those in organic soil were larger than seedlings in the other light treatments or soil type. Total nonstructural carbohydrate concentrations were lower in the understory seedlings and significant differences between soil types were present in the gap and clearing seedlings. Nitrogen concentrations were higher in the understory seedlings and those growing in the organic soil compared to the other treatments. Gas exchange rates were highest in clearing and the organic soil seedlings. Gap seedlings exhibited photosynthetic acclimation that allowed them to utilize high light of midday and any sunflecks during the morning and afternoon. Relative fluorescence was significantly influenced by both light treatment and soil type, with the highest values observed in the gap seedlings. Light response curves showed decreasing apparent maximum quantum efficiency from the understory to clearing, while maximum photosynthetic rate was highest in the gap seedlings. Chlorophyll concentration was highest in understory seedlings and those growing in organic soil and higher in seedlings growing in organic than in mineral soil. Both foliar tannin and phenolic levels were highest in clearing seedlings, and only tannin concentrations were affected by soil type. Understory seedlings had the highest mortality and insect herbivory; the latter was found to be inversely related to tannin concentration. Overall, growth and photosynthesis in beech seedlings responded positively to high light associated with small canopy gaps. Organic soil increased seedling size, particularly in the gap and clearing environments. We conclude that forest gaps are favorable for photosynthesis and growth of European beech seedlings. 相似文献

The response of gas exchange, leaf chlorophyll content, relative fluorescence to decreasing water potential and recovery was followed in European beech seedlings from two Italian populations, differing in their native precipitation amounts. A population from Sicily (southern Italy) was selected as representative of a xeric population while a population from central Italy, Abetone, represented a mesic one. Dry-matter partitioning, leaf area, hydraulic sufficiency and xylem embolism were evaluated in both well-watered control plants as well as in plants subjected to drought. With the onset of water stress, values of water potential, leaf relative water content, net photosynthesis, leaf conductance and leaf chlorophyll concentration decreased concurrently while relative fluorescence remained unchanged. The population from Sicily showed a delay in effects of the imposed drought. Within 5 days of rewatering, leaf conductance was not fully recovered while all of the other parameters recovered to control levels, in both populations. Total, shoot, stem and root dry weight tended to be higher in seedlings from Abetone, even though both populations had similar photosynthetic rates. The population from Sicily exhibited about 3% greater (even if not significant) allocation to roots than the population from Abetone. Seedlings from Abetone had higher, but not significant, leaf specific conductivity and per cent loss in hydraulic conductivity than seedlings from Sicily. Drought resulted in a reduction of hydraulic conductivity and hydraulic sufficiency in seedlings from both populations. Photosynthesis of water stressed plants from both populations appeared to be reduced primarily by carbon dioxide diffusion through stomata and perhaps secondarily by changes in chlorophyll concentration rather than by efficiency of photosystem II. Deadwood is an important component for conserving carbon stock and maintaining species diversity. Scarce information is, at
present, available concerning the amount and composition of deadwood in Mediterranean-type ecosystems. In this study, 21 sites
were chosen to characterize different forest types among representative managed and unmanaged stands in the Central Apennines
(Molise, Italy). Data were collected to assess living tree and deadwood volumes, and the relative abundance of different deadwood
components in decay classes. The information gathered was related to human-induced disturbances on a regional scale. There
were substantial differences in the deadwood volumes between managed and unmanaged stands, although this was not the case
in the living tree volumes. Deadwood volumes were larger in unmanaged than in managed stands. In particular, large amounts
of deadwood were found in managed Mediterranean and Anatolian fir forests, probably due to minimal management practices. Dead
downed trees were less represented in managed forests as they are normally removed to facilitate logging activities. Logs
occurred more frequently in managed stands as logging residues left on site. Most deadwood material belonged to early decay
classes. Proportionally larger amounts of deadwood ascribed to class 1 in managed stands correlated with recent cutting activities.
The relatively large amounts of deadwood attributed in unmanaged stands to class 3 demonstrate its longer persistence in unmanaged
forests. This study represents a first systematic analysis of deadwood occurrence in a typical Mediterranean forest area,
and should be useful in defining important objectives for sustainable forest management. 相似文献

Long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) HAND2-AS1 is a well-characterized tumor suppressor in several types of malignancies, while its role in esophagus squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is unknown. In this study, we found that lncRNA HAND2-AS1 was downregulated, while microRNA-21 ( miRNA-21) was upregulated in tumor tissues than in adjacent healthy tissues of ESCC patients. Expression levels of lncRNA HAND2-AS1 and miRNA-21 were significantly and inversely correlated in tumor tissues but not in healthy tissues. Plasma levels of lncRNA HAND2-AS1 were lower in ESCC patients than in healthy controls, and downregulation of plasma lncRNA HAND2-AS1 distinguished early stage ESCC patients from healthy controls. lncRNA HAND2-AS1 overexpression resulted in downregulation of miRNA-21 in cells of ESCC cell lines and inhibited cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. miRNA-21 overexpression failed to affect lncRNA HAND2-AS1 expression but significantly attenuated the inhibitory effect of lncRNA HAND2-AS1 overexpression on cancer cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. Therefore, lncRNA HAND2-AS1 may inhibit cancer cell proliferation, migration, and invasion in ESCC by regulating miRNA-21. 相似文献

Poplar clones are known to display a wide range of tolerance to drought and water-use efficiency, but the effects of water
deficit on stem growth and tree-ring characteristics are rarely taken into account. This study was conducted in order to investigate
whether the main tree-ring traits correlate with irrigation regimes during the growing season in ‘I-214’ and ‘Dvina’ 4-year-old
poplar clone saplings grown in concrete tanks, during three consecutive years. Total carbon, stable carbon isotope, Klason
lignin and α-cellulose contents were analyzed to characterize wood biochemistry; ring width, wood density, mean vessel density
and mean vessel lumen area were analyzed to characterize wood anatomy to assess the influence of irrigation regime. In both
clones, wood formed in 2005 was more enriched in 13C, suggesting drought-induced stomatal closure. Wood formed in 2006 was less variable in δ13C in relation to irrigation regimes. ‘Dvina’ showed higher Klason lignin content and wood density than ‘I-214’, whatever the
irrigation regime, despite the larger ring widths. ‘Dvina’ has the potential to recover promptly after drought stress, but
at the expense of poor wood technological properties, while ‘I-214’ could continue to grow more uniformly under limited water

Olive trees are a classic component of Mediterranean environments and some of them are known historically to be very old. In order to evaluate the possibility to use olive tree-rings for dendrochronology, we examined by various methods the reliability of olive tree-rings identification. Dendrochronological analyses of olive trees growing on the Aegean island Santorini (Greece) show that the determination of the number of tree-rings is impossible because of intra-annual wood density fluctuations, variability in tree-ring boundary structure, and restriction of its cambial activity to shifting sectors of the circumference, causing the tree-ring sequences along radii of the same cross section to differ. 相似文献
