The effects of culture conditions and of culture ages upon hydrogenaseactivity in Scenedesmus D3 was investigated with nitrite andbenzoquinone as acceptors. It was noticed that level of ironin the culture medium played an important part in the developmentof hydrogenase activity. The cells grown on a medium of relatively high level of iron(104 M) showed higher activity both in nitrite and benzoquinonereduction than those grown on a medium of relatively low levelof iron (105 M). In the former case, hydrogenase activityappeared even after a short incubation with hydrogen (30 min). When the cells with low hydrogenase activity were transferredto a medium containing 10;4 M iron and the activity wasmeasured every 24 hours, the following facts were observed. (a) Nitrite reduction activity increased markedly during thefirst 24 hours and then decreased gradually during further cultivation.Furthermore, a parallelism was observed between nitrite reductionactivity and cell size. (b) On the other hand, the pattern of change in quinone reductionactivity was somewhat different from that of nitrite reduction.This activity appeared only after 3 days' cultivation, reacheda maximum at 4th or 5th day and then decreased. However, thepresence of glucose in the culture medium suppresses the appearanceof quinone reduction activity, while the nitrite reduction activitywas less markedly affected.

An acid α-glucosidase (EC 3.2.1.20) was purified to homogeneity from the culture medium of Tetrahymena thermophila CU 399. Its general molecular, catalytic and immunological properties were compared to those of the T. pyriformis W enzyme. The enzyme from T. thermophila was a 105-kD monomer and the N-terminus (25 amino acid residues) displayed some homology with that of T. pyriformis enzyme. The purified enzyme was most active at 56° C and showed resistance to thermal inactivation. The acid α-glucosidase appears to have α-1,6-glucosidase as well as α-1,4-glucosidase activity. The Km values determined with p-nitrophenyl-α-glucopyranoside, maltose, isomaltose and glycogen were 0.7 mM, 2.5 mM, 28.5 mM and 18.5 mg/ml, respectively. Sphagnum palustre L. is one of the few Sphagnum species distributed in the warm‐temperate zone. To elucidate the mechanisms that enable S. palustre to maintain its productivity under warm climatic conditions, we examined the temperature conditions and photosynthetic characteristics of this species in a lowland wetland in western Japan. Moss temperatures during the daytime were much lower than the air temperature, particularly during summer. The optimum temperature for the net photosynthetic rate was approximately 20°C, irrespective of the season, but summer and autumn samples maintained high rates at higher temperatures as well. The net photosynthetic rate at near light saturation was much higher during summer–autumn than during spring–winter. A model estimation in which net production was calculated from the photosynthetic characteristics and microclimatic data showed that both the low temperature of the moss colony and the seasonal shift in photosynthetic characteristics are among the mechanisms that enable this species to maintain its productivity under warm climatic conditions. 相似文献

Males of the giant water bug, Lethocerus deyrolli, care for egg masses on vegetation above the water surface. They supply the developing eggs with water and guard them against predators. In the present study, mechanisms by which paternal care is extended were found. Males were found situated just below the water on the natal substrate (usually a stick), and the first instar nymphs were aggregated around the substrate. When disturbed, the males showed aggressive behavior, threatening the intruder with their forelegs. Nymphs up to 12 h old did not attack the offered sibling nymphs or anuran larvae, which are common prey in the field. The 24 h‐old nymphs attacked both prey animals; however, they preferred anuran larvae. Cannibalistic behavior in the nymphs was well developed 72 h after hatching, when the nymphs had already dispersed from the natal substrate. The suppression of sibling cannibalism in younger nymphs would promote the maintenance of tight nymphal aggregations and consequently extend male care in this predatory species. 相似文献

Females of the swallowtail butterfly Papilio xuthus L. (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) mate multiply during their life span and use the spermatophores transferred to increase their longevity as well as fecundity. Sperm from different males may be stored in the sperm storage organs (bursa copulatrix and spermatheca). To clarify the pattern of sperm storage and migration in the reproductive tract, mated females are dissected after various intervals subsequent to the first mating, and the type and activity of sperm in the spermatheca are observed. When virgin females are mated with virgin males, the females store sperm in the spermatheca for more than 10 days. Sperm displacement is found in females that are remated 7 days after the first mating. Immediately after remating, these females flush out the sperm of the first male from the spermatheca before sperm migration of the second male has started. However, females receiving a small spermatophore at the second mating show little sperm displacement, and the sperm derived from the small spermatophore might not be able to enter the spermatheca. Investigations were made of the properties of diaphorase, cytochromec reductases, cytochrome c oxidase, and other components ofelectron transfer system in various fractions of leaf homogenateof Begonia semperflorens.
- All the fractions tested showed the existence of cytochromec oxidase, succinic- and reduced diphosphopyridine nucleotide-cytochromec reductases, and diaphorase. Activities of these enzymes werefound to be associated mainly with the particulate fractions.The particulate fractions showed, in particular, a capacityof reducing oxidized cytochrome c with fumarate, malate, -ketoglutarate,ß-hydroxy-butyrate, and citrate.
- Optimum pH foroxidation of cytochrome c by the particulatefractions was foundto be 5.5, while that for reduction was7.2.
- The activityof cytochrome c reductase was partially suppressedby malonate.Partial inhibition of cytochrome c oxidase wascaused by azideand cyanide, the inhibitory effects observedbeing strongerwith particulate fractions than with solublefractions.
