Rotundifolone, a monoterpene isolated from the essential oil of the leaves of Mentha x villosa, is a constituent of several essential oils and known to have antinociceptive activity. Our recent study demonstrated that the analogues of rotundifolone showed also a significant antinociceptive effect. In the present report, to investigate the correlation between the structure and antinociceptive activity, rotundifolone and its analogues were evaluated in the acetic acid-induced writhing test in mice. All compounds showed to be more antinociceptive than rotundifolone against the pain response induced by acetic acid. Comparing the antinociceptive effect of rotundifolone with limonene oxide and (+)-pulegone, the results demonstrated that the epoxide group contributes as much as the ketone group to the antinociceptive activity of rotundifolone. Similarly, pulegone oxide and carvone epoxide were more antinociceptive than rotundifolone, thereby suggesting that the position of the functional group on the ring also influences the antinociceptive activity. (-)-Carvone produced maximal inhibition of the writhing response and was slightly more active than (+)-carvone. The study showed that by appropriate structural modification it may be possible to develop novel antinociceptive agents.  相似文献

About 30% of the total area of Lake Batata (Amazon) was impacted by the disposal of bauxite tailings originated from the process of washing bauxite. This effluent, composed by fine particles of clay and water, settled on top of the natural sediment, originating a new substratum with a different physical and chemical composition. This phenomenon created a new distinct habitat (impacted sediment) influencing the benthic community. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of bioturbation by Campsurus notatus (Ephemeroptera: Polymitarcytidae) on potential gas fluxes in the sediment of natural and impacted areas of the lake. The natural sediment had a significantly higher methane concentration when compared to the impacted one. In incubated sediment cores, the presence of C. notatus nymphs resulted in a significant increase in oxygen consumption and methane and carbon dioxide release to the water column. The effect of the presence of nymphs on methane was ambiguous. The C. notatus nymphs strongly decreased methane concentration in natural sediment samples, probably because of the enhancement of the oxic sediment area. However, this effect was not observed in impacted samples. Finally, the new substratum of Lake Batata decreased methane concentration in sediment and water column. C. notatus nymphs demonstrated to have a significant role on gas flux (methane and CO2) from sediment to water column as well as on oxygen consumption in Lake Batata, consequently influencing the carbon cycle in this lake. Ethnobotany is a relatively new discipline but its social and scientific roles are becoming more consistently defined and its importance as a tool for complimenting management and conservation strategies at local and regional levels is now well recognized by the scientific community throughout the world. In the present work we have collected information from four years of ethnobotanical study in an area of caatinga vegetation in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil with the goal of defining a model for conservation and management actions in the region. Drawing on ethnobotanical and ecological information obtained through traditional techniques of ethnobotanical and vegetation surveys, we discuss the uses of 166 native and exotic plant species and suggest specific actions and specific groups of species for conservation and sustainable use programs. We also discuss the limitations of our approach and indicate what information must still be collected in order to construct robust and workable plans of action.  相似文献

Trypanosoma evansi is the causative agent of equine trypanosomoses. The disease is characterized by fever, anemia, and cachexia. Peroxidative damage of the red blood cells caused by the parasite, may contribute to the pathogenesis of the anemia seen in trypanosomoses. Consequently, we evaluated the hematocrit, the osmotic fragility of the red blood cells, the level of lipid peroxidation and the activity of the Ca-ATPase of red blood cell ghosts from rats experimentally infected with T. evansi. After 72 h inoculation, the hematocrit decreased from 49.5% to 33%; the osmotic fragility of the red blood cells was approximately 40% higher as compared to the healthy animals; and the red blood cell ghosts showed a higher level of lipid peroxidation and a lower Ca-ATPase activity than the red cell ghosts from the healthy animals. In vitro incubations of red blood cells from healthy animals with T. evansi, produced also a significant increase of the osmotic fragility of the red blood cells.  相似文献

Lorryia formosa Cooreman has been collected on many different host plants around the world. The biological cycle of this species was studied at 28 °C with mites collected from a rubber tree crop. The life table was constructed based on sixty individuals. The average lifetime was 37.43 ± 20.23 (SE) days, and the rm was 0.08. The sex ratio was totally female biased, and unfertilized eggs developed into females. This is the first record of thelytoky in Tydeoidea proved by rearing.  相似文献

Objective : Regulation of growth and development, clinical assessment, and obesity are among the areas of nutritionrelated research, wherein accurate assessment of body composition is important. We want to test the hypothesis that dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) measurements are reproducible in healthy girls. Research Methods and Procedures : We determined total body composition measurements in healthy prepubertal girls using DXA twice, 6 weeks apart. Results : We studied 61 healthy, normal-weight, prepubertal girls, aged 4.8 years to 10.3 years. The girls' DXA-derived mean weight between visits 1 and 2 significantly increased (27.14 kg vs. 27.80 kg, P<0.0001). The increased weight was due to significant increases in total body fat-free mass (FFM) (19.53 kg vs. 19.89 kg,P<O.001), total body bone mass (1.05 kg vs. 1.07 kg, P<0.0001), and total body fat mass (7.61 kg vs. 7.91 kg,P<0.03). The girls' DXA-derived mean total trunk mass between visits 1 and 2 significantly increased (11.23 kg vs. 11.63 kg, p<<0.0001), as did total leg mass (9.33 kg vs. 9.53 kg, p<<0.001), although no significant differences were observed in total arm mass (2.52 kg vs. 2.54 kg, p< = 0.37). The Pearson coefficient of correlation (r) and total coefficient of variation (CV) for intraindividual measurements by DXA were: weight—r = 0.99, CV= 1.97%; total body FFM—r = 0.96, CV = 2.30%; total body bone mass—r = 0.99, CV = 2.08%; total body fat mass—r = 0.96, CV = 6.55%; percentage total body fat— r = 0.91, CV = 5.69%; total trunk mass—r = 0.96, CV = 3.59%; total arm mass—r = 0.95, CV = 4.09%; and total leg mass—r = 0.99, CV = 2.75%. Discussion : Total body FFM, total body bone mass, total body fat mass, percentage of total body fat mass, as well as regional mass determinations by DXA, were highly reproducible in healthy, normal-weight, prepubertal girls. We highly recommend the use of DXA for total body composition studies in girls aged 5 years to 10 years.  相似文献

Cross-species communication, where signals are sent by one species and perceived by others, is one of the most intriguing types of communication that functionally links different species to form complex ecological networks. Global change and human activity can affect communication by increasing fluctuations in species composition and phenology, altering signal profiles and intensity, and introducing noise. So far, most studies on cross-species communication have focused on a few specific species isolated from ecological communities. Scaling up investigations of cross-species communication to the community level is currently hampered by a lack of conceptual and practical methodologies. Here, we propose an interdisciplinary framework based on information theory to investigate mechanisms shaping cross-species communication at the community level. We use plants and insects, the cornerstones of most ecosystems, as a showcase and focus on chemical communication as the key communication channel. We first introduce some basic concepts of information theory, then we illustrate information patterns in plant–insect chemical communication, followed by a further exploration of how to integrate information theory into ecological and evolutionary processes to form testable mechanistic hypotheses. We conclude by highlighting the importance of community-level information as a means to better understand the maintenance and workings of ecological systems, especially during rapid global change.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to verify whether fragments of cerrado influence the composition of the mite fauna on rubber trees. Five transects distant 50 m, being the first in the edge near the native areas and the last 200 m inside the crop, were established in each rubber tree crop in southern State of Mato Grosso. In each transect five plants were chosen, and seven leaves were collected from each plant. During one year, 25 quantitative samplings were conducted in two rubber tree crops. The lowest number of phytophagous mites occurred in the transect closer to the native vegetation, and the highest number, in the most distant from the native vegetation. The largest diversity was also observed in the transect closer to the neighboring vegetation. Ten species of predatory mites were also registered in neighboring native areas. These data suggest the movement of predatory mites from the native areas to the monoculture. These natural areas can possibly supply alternative food and habitat for natural enemies of phytophagous mites in the period of food scarceness in the rubber tree crop. The presence of native areas close to culture areas should be taken into account in the elaboration of programs of ecological management of pests.  相似文献

Quarterly samples were done in 2001 on three rubber tree plantation in the northwest of the state of S?o Paulo. Three rubber trees of each locality were sampled. Between the rows of rubber tree four species of spontaneous euphorbiaceous were collected: Chamaesyce hirta, C. hyssopifolia, Euphorbia heterophylla and Phyllanthus tenellus. A total of 8.954 mites of 38 species, belonging to 31 genera of 11 families were collected. Tydeidae and Phytoseiidae had the highest diversity of species, 9 and 7, respectively. The most abundant families were Eriophyidae (3.594), Tydeidae (2.825) and Tenuipalpidae (1.027). The most abundant species on the rubber trees were: phytophagous - Calacarus heveae Feres, Tenuipalpus heveae Baker, Lorryia sp.2, Lorryia formosa Cooreman and Lorryia sp.1; predators - Zetzellia quasagistemas Hernandes & Feres, Pronematus sp., Iphiseiodes zuluagai Denmark & Muma and Euseius citrifolius Denmark & Muma. Among the spontaneous euphorbiaceous, predatory mites were abundantly found on C. hirta and E. heterophylla, mainly Pronematus sp. and E. citrifolius, suggesting that these plants could be important in the maintenance of these predators in the rubber tree cultivation areas. However, plants that can shelter predators and at the same time exert strong competition (nutrients, water etc) to rubber trees, can not be recommended for pest management programs. Studies about competition between rubber trees and spontaneous plants need to be conducted for feasible efficient programs of environmental management, aiming at the control of pest mites of rubber tree.  相似文献
