The atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration has beenrising and is predicted to reach double the present concentrationsometime during the next century. The objective of this investigationwas to determine the long-term effects of different CO2 concentrationson carbohydrate status and partitioning in rice (Oryza sativaL cv. IR-30). Rice plants were grown season-long in outdoor,naturally sunlit, environmentally controlled growth chamberswith CO2 concentrations of 160, 250, 330, 500, 660, and 900µmolCO2 mol1 air. In leaf blades, the priority between the partitioningof carbon into storage carbohydrates or into export changedwith developmental stage and CO2 concentration. During vegetativegrowth, leaf sucrose and starch concentrations increased withincreasing CO2 concentration but tended to level off above 500µmolmol1 CO2. Similarly, photosynthesis also increased withCO2 concentrations up to 500µmol mol1 and thenreached a plateau at higher concentrations. The ratio of starchto sucrose concentration was positively correlated with theCO2 concentration. At maturity, increasing CO2 concentrationresulted in an increase in total non-structural carbohydrate(TNC) concentration in leaf blades, leaf sheaths and culms.Carbohydrates that were stored in vegetative plant parts beforeheading made a smaller contribution to grain dry weight at CO2concentrations below 330µmol mol1 than for treatmentsat concentrations above ambient Increasing CO2 concentrationhad no effect on the carbohydrate concentration in the grainat maturity Key words: CO2 enrichment, starch, sucrose 相似文献

A differential equation model of vegetative growth of the soyabean plant (Glycine max (L.) Merrill cv. Ransom)was developed to account for plant growth in a phytotron systemunder variation of root temperature and nitrogen concentrationin nutrient solution. The model was tested by comparing modeloutputs with data from four different experiments. Model predictionsagreed fairly well with measured plant performance over a widerange of root temperatures and over a range of nitrogen concentrationsin nutrient solution between 0.5 and 10.0 mmol in the phytotron environment. Sensitivity analyses revealedthat the model was most sensitive to changes in parameters relatingto carbohydrate concentration in the plant and nitrogen uptakerate. Key words: Glycine max (L.) An enzyme assay was developed to measure the initial and Mg2+CO2activated forms of Ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate Carboxylase/Oxygenase(Rubisco) in rose leaves. The assay was verified by co-extractionof the leaflets with partially purified spinach Rubisco andthrough correlation with net photosynthetic rates of individualleaflets (r2=0.7324). Changes in activities were measured asa function of depth of leaves in the canopy for two cultivarsof greenhouse hybrid tea roses. Initial Rubisco activity declinedwith increasing canopy depth for both cultivars. The activatedform of the enzyme, however, remained constant with canopy depthfor cv. Red Success; but increased with canopy depth, then declinedafter mid-canopy in the cv. Royalty. Rubisco activities werealso measured in the cv. Red Success grown in CO2 enriched environments(100 mm3 dm3) at three humidity levels. The activitieswere not significantly affected by humidity treatment. Genes encoding the Leu (GAG), Ser (UGA), Gln (UUG) and Lys (UUU) tRNAs have been cloned and sequenced from the deep sea hyperthermophilic Archaeon, Methanopyrus kandleri. Sequences conforming to the TATA box element established for methanogen promoters are located upstream of the tRNA(Gln) and tRNA(Lys) genes. All four of the tRNA genes appear to encode the 3' terminal CCA residues of the mature tRNA. These methanogen tRNAs are predicted to contain most, but not all, invariant residues and are characterized by a high level of G + C base pairing, consistent with the 98 degrees C optimum growth temperature of M. kandleri. 相似文献

Summary Isolated lipids from Deinococcus radiodurans were reconstituted at final concentrations of 1 mg/ml into dioleoyl phosphatidyl choline (DOPC) vesicles and assayed for the ability to protect cells of Escherichia coli against killing by UV light (254 nm). Values of D37 (UV dose required to reduce the number of surviving cells to 37% of the original number) were calculated from killing curves. E. coli was afforded the greatest protection with an individual lipid, identified as vitamin MK8 (D37=310 J//m2, compared to D37=67 J/m2 for E. coli irradiated in the presence of DOPC alone). Liposome-mediated protection was dependent on UV254 absorbance and not on turbidity-related light-scattering. BOth vitamin MK8 from D. radiodurans and vitamin K1, which is available commercially, showed a similar degree of UV254-protection for E. coli. The UV-protective properties of vitamin K1 were also investigated on mammalian cells in comparison with other natural lipids and known sunscreens. Survival curves were obtained for mouse fibroblast (L) cells irradiated at UV254 in the absence or presence of DOPC liposomes into which were incorporated various natural lipids or standard sunscreen ingredients, all at final concentrations of 1 mg/ml. Experimentally determined values of D37 were as follows: Vitamin K1, 73 J/m2; \-carotene, 44 J/m2; -tocopherol, 20 J/m2; sulisobenzone, 156 J/m2; p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), 113 J/m2; benzophenone, 80 J/m2; oxybenzone, 61 J/m2 and DOPC alone. 23 J/m2. Vitamin K1, the most protective lipid tested, was also compared with PABA and oxybenzone (all at concentrations of 20 mg/ml; applied topicall) for its ability to protec Skh-hairless mice from UV254-induced erythema, yielding a UV254 protection factor of 3.5. In addition, vitamin K1 (at 100 mg/ml) was able to provide hairless mice with a small degree of UVB protection, as indicated by an experimentally determined Solar Protection Factor of 1.5–2.0. Although it is concluded that vitamin K is not likely to account for the extraordinarily high degree of UV-resistance of D. radiodurans, vitamin K does show characteristics worthy of its consideration as a UV-screening agent.

A method has been developed to detect thermophilic species of Campylobacter in shellfish, marine and tributary waters, sediment and farm runoff by-products such as manure and silage. The method consists of a 48 h enrichment incubation and subcultured to selective agars. Presumptive colonies confirmed with a latex agglutination (antibodies) to common flagellar antigens of C. jejuni, C. coli and C. lardi. Over an 8 year period, West Coast estuaries (Washington, Oregon, and California) were sampled, resulting in analysis of a total of 512 samples. Results suggest that Campylobacter spp. are well distributed in the marine environment. Two enrichment broths were compared for the recovery of campylobacters from environmental samples. The method described in the Food and Drug Administration Bacteriological Analytical Manual (FDA/BAM) (1984), was compared to a modified method. Use of the modified method described here resulted in higher recovery rates of Campylobacter spp. Recoveries of campylobacters from sediment, shellfish, and water were 10,13, and 28% higher for the modified method, respectively. 相似文献

How can one account for intra-and interspecific variability in partitioning of reproduction? Animals that store food items in scattered sites must decide how to distribute their caches in space. Our theoretical approach is based on the assumption that such animals disperse their caches in a manner that maximizes the long-term rate of storage of recoverable (surviving) food items in the habitat. We investigate the cache-spacing behavior of theoretical scatter hoarders that encounter food sources differing in the energetic content of the items they contain. We then describe a field experiment in which gray jays (Perisoreus canadensis) were presented with both small- and large-item food sources. The jays compensated for source type by spacing larger-item caches more widely, a compensation that would tend to yield a high rate of storage of recoverable food energy over the long term and throughout the territory. Previous models do not adequately account for the observed patterns of cache dispersion. 相似文献
