The tiller characteristics (length and age of laminae, numberof leaves per tiller) which depend on morphogenetic characterssuch as leaf appearance and expansion rates, leaf growth durationand leaf lifespan were studied in the field over four growingseasons to gain a better understanding of the progressive changesin leaf digestibility over time, and to facilitate the developmentof predictive mathematical models. We show that, for a givenregrowth, only the number of leaves per tiller and the laminaexpansion rate remain constant throughout growth. In other words,the length of successive laminae, their growth duration andlifespan increased while their rate of appearance decreasedin such a way that the lamina expansion rate at the tiller levelremained constant. These changes were associated with an increasein sheath length which governs both the lamina appearance rateand its growth duration. As temperature increased, the averagelamina expansion rate and the number of laminae which grew bothincreased simultaneously. Therefore, high temperature acceleratesthe changes in tiller characteristics which occur as growthprogresses. Radiation-induced lung fibrosis(RILF) is a common side effect of thoracic irradiation therapy and leads to high mortality rates after cancer treatment. Radiation injury induces inflammatory M1 macrophage polarization leading to radiation pneumonitis, the first stage of RILF progression. Fibrosis occurs due to the transition of M1 macrophages to the anti-inflammatory pro-fibrotic M2 phenotype, and the resulting imbalance of macrophage regulated inflammatory signaling. Non-coding RNA signaling has been shown to play a large role in the regulation of the M2 mediated signaling pathways that are associated with the development and progression of fibrosis. While many studies show the link between M2 macrophages and fibrosis, there are only a few that explore their distinct role and the regulation of their signaling by non-coding RNA in RILF. In this review we summarize the current body of knowledge describing the roles of M2 macrophages in RILF, with an emphasis on the expression and functions of non-coding RNAs.  相似文献

Microsatellite or simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers have wide applicability for genetic analysis in crop plant improvement strategies. The objectives of this project were to isolate, characterize, and map a comprehensive set of SSR markers for maize (Zea mays L.). We developed 1051 novel SSR markers for maize from microsatellite-enriched libraries and by identification of microsatellite-containing sequences in public and private databases. Three mapping populations were used to derive map positions for 978 of these markers. The main mapping population was the intermated B73 × Mo17 (IBM) population. In mapping this intermated recombinant inbred line population, we have contributed to development of a new high-resolution map resource for maize. The primer sequences, original sequence sources, data on polymorphisms across 11 inbred lines, and map positions have been integrated with information on other public SSR markers and released through MaizeDB at URL:www.agron.missouri.edu. The maize research community now has the most detailed and comprehensive SSR marker set of any plant species.  相似文献

Recent data from several reports indicate that free radicals are involved in aetiopathogenesis of many human pathologies including neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder etc. In the present study, we aimed at determining and evaluating levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), a product of lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity levels in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia (n = 25) and bipolar disorder (n = 23). The control group was composed of 20 healthy subjects. There was a significant increase in MDA levels of patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder compared with controls. SOD and GSH-Px activity levels were significantly higher in the schizophrenic group compared with controls. SOD activity levels in bipolar the group were significantly higher than controls whereas there were no significant changes in GSH-Px activity levels in the bipolar group and controls. Significant differences between lipid peroxidation product and antioxidant enzyme (SOD and GSH-Px) activity levels in schizophrenic and bipolar disorder patients compared with controls leads us to believe that these differences are related to the heterogenities in aetiologies of these disorders.  相似文献

MOTIVATION: The development of an integrated genetic and physical map for the maize genome involves the generation of an enormous amount of data. Managing this data requires a system to aid in genotype scoring for different types of markers coming from both local and remote users. In addition, researchers need an efficient way to interact with genetic mapping software and with data files from automated DNA sequencing. They also need ways to manage primer data for mapping and sequencing and provide views of the integrated physical and genetic map and views of genetic map comparisons. RESULTS: The MMP-LIMS system has been used successfully in a high-throughput mapping environment. The genotypes from 957 SSR, 1023 RFLP, 189 SNP, and 177 InDel markers have been entered and verified via MMP-LIMS. The system is flexible, and can be easily modified to manage data for other species. Loss of the chromosomal region 8p21 negatively effects survival in patients with multiple myeloma (MM) that undergo autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT). In this study, we aimed to identify the immunological and molecular consequences of del(8)(p21) with regards to treatment response and bortezomib resistance.In patients receiving bortezomib as a single first line agent without any high-dose therapy, we have observed that patients with del(8)(p21) responded poorly to bortezomib with 50% showing no response while patients without the deletion had a response rate of 90%. In vitro analysis revealed a higher resistance to bortezomib possibly due to an altered gene expression profile caused by del(8)(p21) including genes such as TRAIL-R4, CCDC25, RHOBTB2, PTK2B, SCARA3, MYC, BCL2 and TP53. Furthermore, while bortezomib sensitized MM cells without del(8)(p21) to TRAIL/APO2L mediated apoptosis, in cells with del(8)(p21) bortezomib failed to upregulate the pro-apoptotic death receptors TRAIL-R1 and TRAIL-R2 which are located on the 8p21 region. Also expressing higher levels of the decoy death receptor TRAIL-R4, these cells were largely resistant to TRAIL/APO2L mediated apoptosis.Corroborating the clinical outcome of the patients, our data provides a potential explanation regarding the poor response of MM patients with del(8)(p21) to bortezomib treatment. Furthermore, our clinical analysis suggests that including immunomodulatory agents such as Lenalidomide in the treatment regimen may help to overcome this negative effect, providing an alternative consideration in treatment planning of MM patients with del(8)(p21).  相似文献

Few studies have focused on vegetation characteristics of importance to feeding domestic herbivores, mainly the seasonal pattern of herbage growth at spring. Our objective is to establish and to evaluate a simple method of ranking grassland communities for these characteristics. We combined approaches at plant species level (comparison of grass species growing in a pure stand) and plant community level (comparison of grasslands differing mainly in their nutrient availability). Firstly, we ask if the ranking of species by leaf dry matter content (LDMC), a functional parameter used to assess the plant strategy for resource acquisition and use, is consistent with a classification of the species using three plant features that determine plant growth pattern at spring (beginning and ending of stem elongation, leaf lifespan). Secondly, for three networks of natural grasslands, we test whether there is consistency when ranking them by their dominant plant functional type (PFT A, B or C) established previously at species level, and by the three agronomic characteristics. For species growing in pure stands, there was a significant effect of PFT for the three plant features. For species having a low LDMC (A and B PFT), there were earlier stem elongation in the season, earlier flowering and shorter leaf lifespan. The opposite was observed for species having a high LDMC (C and D PFT). For grassland communities dominated by A-PFT, the ceiling yield for leaves and stems occurred earlier in spring than for those dominated by C-PFT. Results were consistent at plant and community levels. Scaling up from plant to community was well mediated by PFT. Plant features which characterize species for resource acquisition and use are consistent with herbage growth patterns at plant community level. These results show that herbage growth pattern and composition depend on PFTs and that knowing the PFT dominance is of great importance to plan the use of grasslands. We can expect to use the PFT approach to perform vegetation diagnosis at field level when the objective is to rank grassland communities for their agronomic characteristics. Fernando L. Aqueous leaf extract of Bryophyllum pinnatum Lam (Crassulaceae) is used as a cough remedy and for the prophylaxis of asthma. Since drugs used for the prophylaxis of asthma may be acting on airway smooth muscles, we investigated the effects of aqueous leaf extract of the plant on the contractile responses of isolated tracheal rings. Guinea pigs were grouped into non-sensitized, ovalbumin (OA)-sensitized, OA-sensitized but 200 mg/kg/day x 21 extract-treated, and OA-sensitized but 400 mg/kg/day x 21 extract-treated. The extract was administered orally. Tracheal rings obtained from the four groups were mounted in organ baths and used to test spasmolytic and antispasmodic effects of the extract on histamine or carbachol-induced contractions. Concentrations of 0.125-1.0 mg/ml of the extract did not relax histamine or carbachol-induced precontractions. The presence of 0.25-1.0 mg/ml of the extract in organ baths significantly reduced the maximal contractile responses (Emax) to cumulative concentrations of histamine or carbachol irrespective of the experimental group. pD2 values were significantly reduced for histamine and carbachol in rings obtained from 400 mg/kg/day x 21 extract-treated group. It is concluded that aqueous leaf extract of B. pinnatum possesses antispasmodic effects on the guinea pig tracheal rings.
