Demand for sustainably produced biomass is expected to increase with the need to provide renewable commodities, improve resource security and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with COP26 commitments. Studies have demonstrated additional environmental benefits of using perennial biomass crops (PBCs), when produced appropriately, as a feedstock for the growing bioeconomy, including utilisation for bioenergy (with or without carbon capture and storage). PBCs can potentially contribute to Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) (2023–27) objectives provided they are carefully integrated into farming systems and landscapes. Despite significant research and development (R&D) investment over decades in herbaceous and coppiced woody PBCs, deployment has largely stagnated due to social, economic and policy uncertainties. This paper identifies the challenges in creating policies that are acceptable to all actors. Development will need to be informed by measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) of greenhouse gas emissions reductions and other environmental, economic and social metrics. It discusses interlinked issues that must be considered in the expansion of PBC production: (i) available land; (ii) yield potential; (iii) integration into farming systems; (iv) R&D requirements; (v) utilisation options; and (vi) market systems and the socio-economic environment. It makes policy recommendations that would enable greater PBC deployment: (1) incentivise farmers and land managers through specific policy measures, including carbon pricing, to allocate their less productive and less profitable land for uses which deliver demonstrable greenhouse gas reductions; (2) enable greenhouse gas mitigation markets to develop and offer secure contracts for commercial developers of verifiable low-carbon bioenergy and bioproducts; (3) support innovation in biomass utilisation value chains; and (4) continue long-term, strategic R&D and education for positive environmental, economic and social sustainability impacts. 相似文献

Summary Calreticulin was identified in a variety of rabbit tissues by Western blot analysis. Indirect immunofluorescence studies on cultured cells or frozen sections from the corresponding tissues revealed that the protein was distributed to the endoplasmic reticulum or sarcoplasmic reticulum. Calreticulin was found to be an abundant calcium-binding protein in non-muscle and smooth muscle cells and a constitutent calcium-binding protein in cardiac and skeletal muscle. From the immunoblot data, calreticulin may exist as an isoform in rabbit neural retina. The present study establishes the ubiquity of calreticulin in intracellular calcium binding. 相似文献

The poor regenerative ability of the CNS of mammals has been attributed, at least in part, to the presence of mature oligodendrocytes, which have been shown to inhibit axonal growth. Proliferation of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells in the rat optic nerve during development, and thereby the timing of oligodendrocyte differentiation, has been shown to depend on a factor derived from type 1 astrocytes, later characterized as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF). In the present study we examine whether injury to the optic nerve induces changes in the levels of PDGF in spontaneously regenerating systems, compared with nonregenerating systems. Soluble substances, derived from nonneuronal cells surrounding injured fish and rat optic nerves, were prepared and examined for the presence of PDGF immunoreactivity and biological mitogenic activity on PDGF-responsive cells. The results suggest that PDGF-like mitogenic activity and immunoreactivity are present in both fish and rat optic nerves. However, in the rat optic nerve PDGF levels increased after axonal injury, whereas in the fish optic nerve injury was accompanied by an apparent decrease in PDGF-like levels. The results are discussed with respect to the possible role of PDGF in regeneration. 相似文献

Summary This paper presents analyses of habitat-use and home range size in the Blanford's fox. We predicted, from the resource dispersion hypothesis (RDH), that home ranges would encompass similar areas of combined fruitful habitats, but widely different areas of useless habitats, and thus that home ranges would be larger where such fruitful patches are fragmented and widely dispersed. Home range estimates of 0.5–2.0 km2 were calculated for 16 adult Blanford's foxes, using three different methods. There were no significant differences in home range size between sexes or study sites. One habitat, dry creekbed, was the most frequently visited in all home ranges. Dry creekbed provided abundant prey for the foxes and only sparse cover for their predators. Both the available area of creekbed in each range, and the area of creekbed patches that was used by the foxes, were independent of home range size. However, the variance in home range size was explained by the mean distance between the main denning area and the most frequently used patches of creekbed. These results are in accord with some predictions of the resource dispersion hypothesis. 相似文献

The role of oligosaccharide modification in human acid beta-glucosidase function was investigated. This lysosomal enzyme has five putative N-glycosylation sites, four of which are occupied. The unglycosylated human protein was stable when expressed in bacteria or in Spodoptera frugiperda cells in the presence of tunicamycin but lacked catalytic activity. Deglycosylation of purified acid beta-glucosidase from human placenta with N-Glycanase under native conditions resulted in the removal of an accessible oligosaccharide chain from a single site with no effect on activity, whereas complete deglycosylation resulted in proportionate loss of activity. These studies demonstrate that occupancy of at least one glycosylation site is required for the formation and maintenance of acid beta-glucosidase in an active conformation. 相似文献

Human acid beta-glucosidase (D-glucosyl-N-acylsphingosine glucohydrolase, EC 3.2.1.45) cleaves the beta-glucosidic bonds of glucosylceramide and synthetic beta-glucosides. The specificity of binding to the active site of this enzyme was evaluated using series of inhibitors including synthetic sphingosines, N-alkyl(Cn)-deoxynojirimycins (1,5-dideoxy-5-iminoglucose) and N-Cn-glucosylamines. The sphingosines were rapidly reversible inhibitors with maximal potency (IC50 approximately 78-150 micro M) at chain lengths of 14-18 carbons. The presence of unsaturation between C4 and C5 was required for inhibition of enzyme activity. Neither the nature of this bond (double or triple bond) nor the presence of erythro or threo configurations at C2 influenced inhibitory potency. The N-C10- to N-C14-deoxynojirimycins were rapidly reversible inhibitors with Ki approximately 8.5 nM. In comparison, the 1-amino glucose derivatives, i.e., N-Cn-glucosylamines (n = 12-18), were more potent (IC50 approximatley 0.3-3 nM) and their maximal inhibitory potencies were dependent on time as well as enzyme and substrate concentrations: i.e., the N-C12- to N-C18-glucosylamines were competitive, slow-tight binding inhibitors. Analyses of progress curves at various N-Cn-glucosylamine (n = 14-18) concentrations indicated the formation of rapidly dissociating initial EI collison complex which then undergoes a conformational change to a slowly reversible EI complex. These results were consistent with the long chain N-Cn-glucosylamines being reaction intermediate analogues and with this enzyme's hydrolytic mechanism requiring a conformational change during the transition state. 相似文献

Summary Daytime numbers of pineal synaptic ribbons higher than reported in the pineal gland of any other mammalian species were observed in two diurnal rodents, the eastern chipmunk and Richardson's ground squirrel. The fresh waters of the Baltic German and Polish lowlands are inhabited by several Gammarus species. One of them, Gammarus fossarum, a common inhabitant of lowland and submontane waters in western and central Europe, is known to show different morphotypes of unclear taxonomic status. Recent molecular studies showed that Gammarus fossarum is a complex of numerous highly divergent lineages. We characterized one of these lineages genetically and morphologically, described it as a species new to science and named it in honour of Krzysztof Ja?d?ewski as Gammarus jazdzewskii. The newly described species is widely distributed in Central Europe, from the Western Carpathians to the Baltic Lowlands. Its ancestral lineage appeared in the Miocene and diversified largely throughout the Pleistocene, presumably in the Western Carpathians. Its current distribution is predominantly a result of postglacial expansion from local refugia located in the Western Carpathians. 相似文献
