Ecological studies on the population of isaza,Chaenogobius Isaza Tanaka,in Lake Biwa,with special reference to the effects of population density upon its growth

1. In order to get the knowledge on the age composition of “isaza” population in Lake Biwa and the effect of population density on growth, monthly distribution of mean body length and mean body weight has been analyzed on the basis of monthly haul by “isazabiki” trawl during 1949 to 1953 and also 1960 to 1965.
2. There is no apparent sex difference in the growth in the first and second years of life.
3. “Isaza” population is composed of two age groups, age 0 and 1 groups (1+fish), the latter occupying by far the greater part in commercial catch.
4. During the growth season fishes of both ages feed mainly on zooplankton, though in winter frequently take chironomid larvae, gammaridae and others in volume.
5. The growth season falls in the period from April to October in both age groups.
6. A considerable yearly variation occurring in growth is in close connection with the fluctuation of population density of all ages.
7. The influence affected by the density of age 1 group is larger than that by age 0 group.

     

Study of glomerular vasculature in teleosts with the resin-replica method

Glomerular vasculature was investigated in the carpCyprinus carpio, the scorpionfishSebastiscus marmoratus, and the marine catfishPlotosus lineatus with the resin-replica method. An afferent arteriole was connected with a glomerulus in every fish. It was slender in the carp, whereas the scorpionfish and marine catfish possessed thick afferent arterioles. The glomerular capillaries were sinusoidal. The divergences, convergences, and windings of these capillaries were not well developed in any of the fish. The glomerular capillaries converged into an efferent arteriole in the carp and scorpionfish. In the marine catfish, on the other hand, most of the glomeruli had two efferent arterioles.     

Effects of serine protease inhibitors on oxyradical burst from phagocytizing neutrophils—analysis by chemiluminescence counting and its microscopic imaging

Reaction difference of oxyradical generation and luminol-dependent photoemission of zymosan- and phorbol ester-treated neutrophils were investigated using a conventional photomultiplier and ultrasensitive photonic imaging technique. Zymosan-treated cells released a concentrated photonic burst corresponding to the cellular distribution. In contrast, phorbol ester-treated cells produced a negligible level of photoemission, and the additional application of Ca²⁺ ionophore enhanced the photonic burst, which was gradually spread out into extracellular space. Serine protease inhibitors did not attenuate PMA-induced chemiluminescence but did attenuate zymosan-induced chemiluminescence. This suggests the involvement of serine protease in the respiratory burst of phagocytizing neutrophils.     

A mutation causing reduced biological activity and stability of thyroxine-binding globulin probably as a result of abnormal glycosylation of the molecule

T4-binding globulin (TBG), a 54-kilodalton glycoprotein, is the major thyroid hormone transport protein in man. The exact nature of the mutations causing X chromosome-linked TBG deficiency, which affect about 1 in 2,500 newborn males, is unknown. Here we report the sequence of a unique variant TBG (TBG-Gary) encoding a protein with severely impaired T4 binding as well as decreased stability at 37 C, resulting in its rapid in vivo denaturation. A single nucleotide substitution in the codon for residue 96 of the mature protein replaces isoleucine with asparagine; this replacement creates an additional site for N-linked glycosylation. The anodal shift of TBG-Gary on isoelectric focusing gel electrophoresis suggests that this new site is likely glycosylated. Since glycosylated is required for TBG to assume its correct tertiary structure, but is not subsequently necessary for maintenance of the biological properties or stability of the molecule, we believe that the likely presence of additional carbohydrate probably affects a higher order structure of the molecule and is thus responsible for the reduced stability and hormone binding activity of TBG-Gary (TBGASN-96).     

Effects of Cu,Cd and Zn on photosynthesis of freshwater benthic algae

One hundred and eighteen algal isolates comprising seven classes were obtained from a range of sites from polluted rivers running through Cu or Zn mining regions, and from unpolluted rivers. All the isolates were tested for photosynthetic activity when exposed to Cu, Cd or Zn. The tolerance levels of Bacillariophyceae, Charophyceae, Cyanophyceae and Chlorophyceae to Cu showed significant positive correlations with Cu concentrations in the field. However the distribution of metal sensitivities of the algae from the sites with the same metal concentration was broad. Both Bacillariophyceae and Charophyceae had a number of strains whose sensitivity to Cu differed more widely in relation to Cu levels in the environment than Cyanophyceae and Chlorophyceae. Cyanophyceae were sensitive to all three metals, whether or not isolates were obtained from polluted sites, whereas Chlorophyceae tended to have high tolerance even in isolates from unpolluted sites. For Cd and Zn the correlation between tolerance levels and concentrations in the field was not so clear as for Cu. The occurrence of Cu tolerance was shown in 4 diatom species and one Charophyceae, whereas metal resistance occurred in some Chlorophyceae. Cu-tolerant isolates tended also to be Zn-tolerant in Bacillariophyceae, and Cd-resistant isolates tended also to be Zn-resistant in Chlorophyceae.
