1. Mobility is important for the understanding of how species survive in fragmented landscapes and cope with increasing rates of habitat and climate change. However, mobility is a difficult trait to explore and is poorly known in most taxa. Species traits have been studied in relation to range shifts, extinction risks, and responses to habitat area and isolation, and have also been suggested as good estimators of mobility. Here we explore the relation between mobility and species traits in noctuid moths. 2. We sampled noctuid moths by an automatic light‐trap on an island far out in the Baltic Sea. We compared traits of the non‐resident species on the island with traits of a species pool of assumed potential migrants from the Swedish mainland. 3. Mobility was significantly related to adult activity period, length of flight period, and the interaction between host‐plant specificity and distribution area. Widely distributed host‐plant generalists were more mobile than host‐plant specialists with more restricted distribution, and species with an adult activity period in August to September moved to the island to a higher extent than species with an adult activity period in May to July. Our results remained qualitatively robust in additional analyses, after controlling for phylogeny and including all species recorded on the island, except for the trait ‘length of flight period’. 4. Our results highlight the importance of the relation between mobility and species traits. Noctuid moths with certain traits move over longer distances than earlier known. This finding is important to include when predicting range dynamics in fragmented and changing landscapes, and when conservation measures of species are devised.  相似文献

Abstract: Knowledge of the possible role of cyclic behavior in wildlife dynamics assists in understanding and managing populations. Using spectrum, we analyzed time series (1978-2002) on the abundance of northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) and scaled quail (Callipepla squamata) in several ecological regions in Texas, USA, to test for the presence of cycles; we also tested whether drought severity (Modified Palmer Drought Severity Index) exhibited cyclic dynamics and whether quail and drought cycles were synchronized among regions. We found evidence of population cyclicity in all ecoregions we tested (5 for bobwhites, 4 for scaled quail) based on both Texas Parks and Wildlife and North American Breeding Bird Survey count data. Periods of the observed cycles generally were 5-6 years (bobwhites) or 2-3 years (scaled quail), depending on ecoregion and data source. Cyclicity was most pronounced for bobwhites in the Rolling Plains (north TX) and the South Texas Plains. The Palmer Index exhibited a roughly 5-year cycle in 5 of 6 regions we tested. A 5-year bobwhite and Palmer Index cycle were synchronous in 3 contiguous ecoregions totaling 27,200,000 ha. Wet-dry cycles seemed to synchronize bobwhite cycles in Texas. Our results suggest that habitat manipulations aimed at improving habitat conditions during dry periods, such as reducing livestock stocking rates, could provide ground cover similar to that available in wet periods.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Within forests susceptible to wildfire and insect infestations, land managers need to balance dead tree removal and habitat requirements for wildlife species associated with snags. We used Mahalanobis distance methods to develop predictive models of white-headed woodpecker (Picoides albolarvatus) nesting habitat in postfire ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa)-dominated landscapes on the Fremont-Winema National Forests in south central Oregon, USA. The 1-km radius (314 ha) surrounding 45 nest sites was open-canopied before fire and a mosaic of burn severities after wildfire. The 1-ha surrounding nests of white-headed woodpeckers had fewer live trees per hectare and more decayed and larger diameter snags than at non-nest sites. The leading cause of nest failure seemed to be predation. Habitat and abiotic features were not associated with nest survival. High daily survival rates and little variation within habitat features among nest locations suggest white-headed woodpeckers were consistently selecting high suitability habitats. Management activities that open the forest canopy and create conditions conducive to a mosaic burn pattern will probably provide suitable white-headed woodpecker nesting habitat after wildfire. When making postfire salvage logging decisions, we suggest that retention of larger, more decayed snags will provide nesting habitat in recently burned forests.  相似文献

A number of variants of Cloudman S91 mouse melanoma cells that differ with respect to the amount of pigment produced are available for study. In this report, we compare the photobiological responses of S91/amel, which contains about 1 pg of melanin per cell, with S91/I3, which contains about 3 pg/cell. Earlier studies had shown that UVC induced more oxidative damage (in the form of thymine glycols) in cell line S91/I3 than in S91/amel and that cell line S91/amel was more resistant to killing by UVC than S91/I3. The present study finds that S91/amel cells are also relatively resistant to killing by near monochromatic UVB from a Philips TLO1 fluorescent lamp and by near monochromatic UVA from a Philips HPW125 lamp. However when the cells are irradiated with a Westinghouse FS20 polychromatic lamp, the S91/I3 cells are more resistant than the S91/amel cells. These findings cannot be explained on the basis of pigment induction because in S91/I3 this is about the same after UVB and FS20, although the maximum is reached earlier after UVB. Nor can our findings be explained on the basis of pyrimidine dimer formation, which is comparable in the two cell lines regardless of the type of irradiation. These results suggest that, with a pigment such as melanin, which absorbs light across the visible and ultraviolet ranges of the spectrum, cellular responses to monochromatic light do not necessarily predict responses to polychromatic mixtures.  相似文献

The European cherry fruit fly Rhagoletis cerasi has been a field model for cytoplasmic incompatibility since the mid 1970s. Two Wolbachia strains were detected in this tephritid species and w Cer2 was described as the CI inducing agent dividing European populations into two unidirectional incompatible groups, i.e. southern females produce viable offspring with northern males, whereas the reciprocal cross results in incompatibility. We detected three new Wolbachia strains by sequencing a multitude of plasmids derived from Wolbachia surface protein gene ( wsp ) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products. Strain-specific primers were developed allowing individual diagnosis without need for cloning. Hybridization of specific PCR products with a wsp oligonucleotide enhanced the detection limit significantly and revealed the presence of low-titre infections in some strains, in different ontogenetic stages and in adults of different age. We then performed a survey of strain prevalence and infection frequency in eight European regions. w Cer1 was fixed in all populations, whereas w Cer2 was detected only in the South. w Cer3 frequency was the lowest without a clear distribution pattern. The abundance of w Cer4 was homogenous across Europe. Like w Cer2, w Cer5 showed significant differences in spatial distribution. Our new findings of previously undetected and recombinant Wolbachia strains in R. cerasi reveal a major caveat to the research community not to overlook hidden Wolbachia diversity in field populations. Low-titres and geographical variability in Wolbachia diversity are expected to influence the outcome of Wolbachia population dynamics and Wolbachia- based insect population control and may create invasion barriers for expanding and artificially introduced Wolbachia strains.  相似文献

The biogeography of the western Palearctic has been intensively studied for more than a century. Recent advances in genetics have allowed the testing of old theories based on distribution patterns, although these analyses are obviously restricted to a reduced number of specific genetic data sets. On the other hand, an increased knowledge on the distributions of species and advances in computer capacities have allowed more detailed biogeographical analyses based on species presence/absence. In the present study, we selected the Odonata as the study group. For all 162 species native to the western Palearctic, we compiled their respective presence or absence in 97 predefined biogeographical regions. Using cluster analyses and principal component analyses, both based on Jaccard similarity coefficients, we analysed the differentiation among these regions and species. In subsequent analyses, the data set was reduced to the Zygoptera, Anisoptera, and the western Palearctic endemics. All analyses consistently showed different faunal regions and faunal elements. In particular, the (1) western and (2) eastern Mediterranean; (3) Central and (4) Northern Europe; and (5) the British Isles were invariably found in all cases. Although the two major Mediterranean regions were characterized by several endemic faunal elements, Northern Europe and the British Isles lacked such elements, but were characterized by faunal compositions strongly deviating from the rest of the western Palearctic region. Moderate differences between Zygoptera and Anisoptera existed, with the latter more clearly redrawing the Mediterranean refuge areas, whereas the former reflected to a greater extent the postglacial expansion patterns from these regions. In general, our findings underline the old biogeographical theories, but refine especially our understanding of the Atlanto‐ and Ponto‐Mediterranean region. Central Europe, comprising the area with the highest species numbers of our whole study region, unravels as a crossroad of postglacial immigrations, but might also represent a region of in situ glacial survival. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 177–195.  相似文献
