The Kanosh Shale (Upper Arenig, Lower Ordovician) of west-central Utah. USA. contains abundant carbonate hardgrounds and one of the earliest diverse hardground communities. The hardgrounds were formed through a combination of processes including the development of early digenetic nodules in clay sediments which were exhumed and concentrated as lags by storms. These cobble deposits. together with plentiful biogenic metrical. were cemented by inorganically precipitated calcite on the sea floor. forming intraformational conglomerate hardgrounds. Echinoderms may have -played a critical role in the development of hardground faunas since their disarticulated calcite ossicles were rapidly cemented by syntaxial overgrowths. forming additional cobbles and hardgrounds. The echinoderms thus may have taphonomically facilitated the development of some of the hard substrates they required. A significant portion of the hardground cements may have been derived from the early dissolution of aragonitic mollusk shells. Kanosh hardground species include the earliest bryozoans recorded on hardgrounds and large numbers of stemmed echinoderms. primarily rhipidocystid cocrinoids. Bryozoans and echinoderms covered nearly equal areas of the hardground surfaces. and there was a distinct polarization between species which preferred the upper. exposed portions of the hardgrounds and others which were most common on undercut. overhang surfaces. The Kanosh Shale hardground fossils combine elements of Late Cambrian assemblages and Middle Ordovician faunas, thus confirming predicted trends in hardground community evolution. especially the replacement of cocrinoids by bryozoans and. to a lesser extent, by other stemmed echinoderms, especially crinoids. The Kanosh community marks the transition from the Cambrian Fauna to The Paleozoic Fauna in The hardground ecosystem. *Carbonate hardgrounds, aragonite dissolution, calcite cement, Echinodermara, Trepostomata, Nicholsonclla. In field trials at sites of an outbreak of arabis mosaic nepovirus (AMV) in England and of raspberry ringspot nepovirus (RRV) in Scotland, the results of exposure of some new raspberry cultivars to natural infection with these viruses showed discrepancies from those obtained in graft inoculation tests using AMV-Lib and RRV-S, the Scottish type isolates. In particular, cv. Glen Prosen, which is immune to AMV-Lib and RRV-S, was infected with AMV and RRV in the field trials. Studies on these and other field isolates of AMV and RRV showed that they differed from the type isolates in Rubus host range and in symptomatology in herbaceous hosts. However, whereas four isolates of RRV found infecting Rubus were distinguishable by spur formation in gel double-diffusion serological tests, six AMV isolates were indistinguishable by this method. Immunoelectrophoresis of virus particles did not distinguish the six AMV isolates, but isolates RRV-MX and RRV-T were distinguishable from RRV-S and the English type isolate, RRV-E. Like the two RRV type isolates, RRV-MX contained a single electrophoretic component, but it migrated must faster whereas RRV-T contained two components, one with a migration rate similar to that of RRV-MX and the other similar to that of the type isolates. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of protein preparations from highly purified virus particles of RRV isolates E, S and MX detected a single polypeptide of estimated mol. wt 54 × 103, 54 × 103 and 50 × 103 respectively but that of isolate T contained two polypeptides of estimated mol. wt 54 × 103 and 50 × 103. These data suggest that RRV-T is a mixture of two isolates. In laboratory tests the nematode Xiphinema diversicaudatum transmitted four isolates of AMV efficiently whereas two populations of the nematode Longidorus elongatus were less efficient vectors of four RRV isolates. Neither vector species transmitted virus to any of nine raspberry cultivars. The results are discussed in relation to the control of nepoviruses in raspberry and to the biology of these viruses.  相似文献

A hardground from the Upper Ordovician Dillsboro Formation near Dillsboro, Indiana, U.S.A., preserves an assemblage of encrusting and boring fossils on both top and bottom surfaces. The slab is inferred to have been an undercut ledge, and the dominant fossils of the assemblage, holdfasts of the tube-building worm Sphenothallus and trepostome bryozoans, are prevalent on both sides. The clumping of Sphenothallus holdfasts has been statistically demonstrated using a nearest-neighbor technique. Sphenothallus has also been shown to withstand overgrowth in interactions with bryozoans.  相似文献

Xiphinema americanum is listed as a quarantine nematode by The European Plant Protection Organisation because of its ability to transmit quarantine viruses. Detection of this nematode in soil samples, or in mixed nematode samples extracted from soil, is therefore of paramount importance. We recently described the use of magnetic beads (Dynabeads) in combination with probes such as lectins or antibodies for recovery of small endoparasitic nematodes including Meloidogyne spp. and Globodera rostochiensis from mixed nematode samples. Here we show that magnetic capture can be used with much larger nematodes such as X. americanum. We describe lectins and antisera that bind to the surface of this nematode and show that the antisera can be used in the Dynabeads system to recover and enrich X. americanum from mixed nematode samples.  相似文献

Abstract Variability in spatial and temporal patterning of flowering by populations of rainforest trees fed upon by honeyeaters and flower-visiting parrots was studied for 2 years in lowland tropical hill forest in Papua New Guinea. All 2200 trees in a 3 ha plot were tagged, identified, mapped and monitored monthly. Of 274 tree species present, 86 flowered during the course of the study; during any given month, approximately 20% of the species flowering that month were visited by nectarivorous birds. Results showed that overall flower resources (total number of species, and number of bird-pollinated species, individuals and flowers) fluctuated during the year, decreased during the dry season and increased during the wet season. In addition, there was a wide range of temporal variation within and among tree species in length and timing of flowering period, percentage of each conspecific population flowering from year to year, and degree of synchrony among flowering conspecifics. Spatial dispersion of tree populations also varied, from clumps to scattered single individuals. Resident bird species were correlated with synchronously flowering trees, whereas nomadic bird species were correlated with asynchronously flowering trees. Resident birds were also associated with smaller blooming displays per tree, whereas nomadic birds were associated with trees that bloomed massively. There was no correlation between avian nomadism and spatial dispersion of tree populations. Thus nomadic birds seem to range in search of rich but unpredictable resources; resident birds may rely more on predictable, but smaller resources.  相似文献

Indirect gradient analysis, which entails the elucidation of relationships between trends in community composition and underlying environmental or successional gradients, is a major objective of ordination in plant ecology. Two ordination techniques, detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) and principal co-ordinates analysis (PCOA), were compared using three sets of Tasmanian vegetation data having known gradients and one set where the vegetation was expected to respond to diverse environmental variables. In every case, the results obtained by DCA were considered superior to, or at least as good as, those of PCOA. Hence, DCA appears to be the more suitable of the two methods for indirect gradient analysis.  相似文献

Folk botanical life-form terms are added to languages in a highly regular manner. The first life-form to be lexically encoded is always "tree"and the second, a small herbaceous plant class (GRERB). The addition of "bush," "vine," and "grass" follows with "vine" always preceding "grass." An explanation of this encoding sequence is proposed which refers to certain general principles of naming-behavior recently outlined by Witkowski and Brown (1977). In addition, size of folk botanical life-form vocabularies is positively correlated with both societal complexity and botanical species diversity. An explanation of these associations is presented . We ask under what circumstances two methods of dispersal-for-distance should be combined, given that the second method may carry the diaspore back towards its point of origin. The combination is made possible when the morphological adaptations of the diaspore are compatible. It is advantageous when the return on investment in the first method of dispersal declines sharply beyond some level of investment. The median seed achieves the best net distance when the two methods achieve similar distances; the upper decile of seeds achieve nearly a simple sum of the two distances. The first two conditions apply to the combination of ballistic with ant-dispersal, which is widespread in Australian sclerophyll shrubs. Mother plants’fitnesses could well be determined by the upper decile of distances their seeds achieve. It remains an open question whether the addition of ant-dispersal to ballistic dispersal achieves the selective advantage of distance or of placement.  相似文献

(1) Observations are presented on the diet, feeding habits, hunting and foraging behaviour of Brown hyaenas of the Central Kalahari. (2) The remains of kills left by other predators are the single most important food item in the Brown hyaena's diet. The diet also consists of small scavenged items, small prey such as rodents which the hyaena itself kills, and wild fruits. (3) Brown hyaenas hunt and scavenge small items solitarily, but congregate for communal scavenging of the large kills left by other predators. (4) Individual hyaenas are not territorial and there is great overlap in home ranges. They use common pathways and frequently meet to socialize while foraging. (5) Resident adults form a group with a social hierarchy maintained through neck-biting, muzzle-wrestling, chasing, and other social interactions. Subadult hyaenas often leave the group when approximately 22 months old. (6) Brown hyaenas have a complex system of communication including visual displays, social interactions, vocalizations, and extensive pasting. These are described. (7) Since carrion is an important source of food, Brown hyaenas have developed distinct relationships with other predators and these are described. (8) In conclusion, the Brown hyaena exhibits a highly flexible social system, foraging and hunting small items solitarily and congregating for the common utilization of a large carcass. The social organization is therefore influenced by the feeding ecology.  相似文献
