Recent advances in reprogramming technology do not bypass the ethical challenge of embryo sacrifice. Induced pluripotent stem cell (iPS) research has been and almost certainly will continue to be conducted within the context of embryo sacrifice. If human embryos have moral status as human beings, then participation in iPS research renders one morally complicit in their destruction; if human embryos have moral status as mere precursors of human beings, then advocacy of iPS research policy that is inhibited by embryo sacrifice concerns renders one morally complicit in avoidable harms to persons. Steps may be taken to address these complicity concerns, but in the final analysis there is no alternative to achieving clarity with respect to the moral status of the human embryo. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. The effect of conditioned media (media aspirated from a variety of cell cultures after 4 d of growth) on cellular invasion by sporozoites of the turkey coccidium, Eimeria adenoeides, was examined. Conditioned medium from turkey kidney cells and baby hamster kidney cells failed to alter invasion. However, conditioned medium from turkey cecal cell cultures produced a significant (P ≤ 0.05), two-fold increase in invasion over control medium in a variety of cell types. Retentates of conditioned medium from the turkey cecal cells that were passed through microconcentrators having molecular mass cutoffs of 50, 100, and 300 kDa similarly enhanced invasion over retentates from control medium. However, retentates from microconcentrators with a cutoff of 1,000 kDa failed to enhance invasion. Pretreatment in conditioned medium, followed by washing of sporozoites prior to inoculation into cultures, did not result in enhanced invasion. Moreover, when the interval between inoculation of sporozoites into cells and fixation of cultures was reduced to less than 3 h, no enhancement of invasion occurred. Conditioned medium from turkey cecal cells that were grown in the presence of 35S-translabel had at least two labeled bands at 150 kDa and > 200 kDa that were absent in conditioned media from turkey kidney and baby hamster kidney cells. 相似文献

Process‐based model analyses are often used to estimate changes in soil organic carbon (SOC), particularly at regional to continental scales. However, uncertainties are rarely evaluated, and so it is difficult to determine how much confidence can be placed in the results. Our objective was to quantify uncertainties across multiple scales in a process‐based model analysis, and provide 95% confidence intervals for the estimates. Specifically, we used the Century ecosystem model to estimate changes in SOC stocks for US croplands during the 1990s, addressing uncertainties in model inputs, structure and scaling of results from point locations to regions and the entire country. Overall, SOC stocks increased in US croplands by 14.6 Tg C yr?1 from 1990 to 1995 and 17.5 Tg C yr?1 during 1995 to 2000, and uncertainties were ±22% and ±16% for the two time periods, respectively. Uncertainties were inversely related to spatial scale, with median uncertainties at the regional scale estimated at ±118% and ±114% during the early and latter part of 1990s, and even higher at the site scale with estimates at ±739% and ±674% for the time periods, respectively. This relationship appeared to be driven by the amount of the SOC stock change; changes in stocks that exceeded 200 Gg C yr?1 represented a threshold where uncertainties were always lower than ±100%. Consequently, the amount of uncertainty in estimates derived from process‐based models will partly depend on the level of SOC accumulation or loss. In general, the majority of uncertainty was associated with model structure in this application, and so attaining higher levels of precision in the estimates will largely depend on improving the model algorithms and parameterization, as well as increasing the number of measurement sites used to evaluate the structural uncertainty. 相似文献

The fossil salmonid †Eosalmo driftwoodensis was originally described from fragmentary specimens. Study of new material of this fossil species confirms that it is a stem-group salmonine, with a mixture of primitive and derived salmonine features in its skull, but with its postcranial skeleton essentially of modern salmonine construction. Two autapomophies define the genus †Eosalmo: a long anterodorsal process of the subopercle meeting the dorsal edge of the bone at an angle of about 60o , and a thin dermal basihyal plate apparently lacking teeth. Its salmonine relationship is supported by eight derived features: (1) posterior part of frontal widely expanded above autosphenotic, (2) hyomandibular fossa on pterotic long, (3) posterior part of endopterygoid extending posteriorly and broadly overlapped by both metapterygoid and quadrate, (4) premaxillary process of maxilla extending dorsally at an angle larger than 10o , (5) infraorbitals 3 to 5 narrow and covering less than anterior half of hyomandibula, (6) presence of suprapreopercle, (7) anterior end of preopercular canal on horizontal arm distinctiy turning to anteroventral corner of preopercle, (8) first uroneural amplified into large fan-shaped stegural, and (9) scales small, with more fhan two lateral line scales per vertebral centrum. Salmonidae are a monophyletic family defined by at least three synapomorphies: posterior surface of epiotic with sulcus, peg-and-socket connection in caudal skeleton, and tetraploid karyotype. Within the Salmonidae, Thymallinae and Salmoninae form a clade based on features from premaxilla, supramaxilla, anguloarticular, and supraorbital. 相似文献
