SYNOPSIS The babesicides imidocarb and amicarbalide, which have structural similarities to the antitrypanosomatid diamidines, proved active against Trypanosoma brucei mouse infections: both cured infections when doses were administered daily for 3 days 24 h post-inoculation (curative dose imidocarb, 10 mg/kg; amicarbalide, 25 mg/kg). Mice were considered cured after survival 30 days longer than untreated infected controls, with no trypanosomes present in blood or cerebrospinal fluid smears. Both agents also cured when administered 48 and 72 h after challenge with T. brucei and prolonged the lives of animals 94 h after challenge. The results are discussed in respect to the potential of these carbanilides and their precursors, the antitumor phthalanilides, as lead compounds in chemotherapy of mammalian trypanosomiases.  相似文献

Gyrfalcons Falco rusticolus use the same nest-sites over long periods of time, and in the cold dry climate of Greenland, guano and other nest debris decay slowly. Nineteen guano samples and three feathers were collected from 13 Gyrfalcon nests with stratified faecal accumulation in central-west and northwest Greenland. Samples were 14C dated, with the oldest guano sample dating to c . 2740–2360 calendar years (cal yr) before present (BP) and three others were probably > 1000 cal yr BP. Feather samples ranged from 670 to 60 cal yr BP. Although the estimated age of material was correlated with sample depth, both sample depth and guano thickness gave a much less reliable prediction of sample age than use of radiocarbon dating on which the margin of error was less. Older samples were obtained from sites farther from the current Greenland Ice Sheet and at higher elevations, while younger samples were closer to the current ice sheet and at lower elevations. Values for δ13C showed that Gyrfalcons nesting farther from the Greenland Ice Sheet had a more marine diet, whereas those nesting closer to the ice sheet (= further inland) fed on a more terrestrial diet. The duration of nest-site use by Gyrfalcons is a probable indicator of both the time at which colonization occurred and the palaeoenvironmental conditions and patterns of glacial retreat. Nowhere before has such extreme long-term to present use of raptor nest-sites been documented.  相似文献

Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) and its metabolic precursor, 1,4-butanediol (BDL), are widely used recreational drugs. Although most commonly described as CNS depressants, GHB and BDL elicit significant sympathomimetic cardiovascular responses [increases in mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate] when administered parenterally. Given that humans most commonly ingest both drugs orally, we examined the dose-response relationships for intragastrically administered GHB and BDL on MAP and heart rate in conscious rats using radiotelemetry. The intragastric administration of GHB increased MAP. BDL increased both MAP and heart rate and was approximately 10-fold more potent as a cardiovascular stimulant than GHB when administered intragastrically. Pretreatment with ethanol prevented the lethality of BDL. These data indicate that 1) both GHB and BDL produce cardiovascular responses when administered intragastrically and 2) BDL is more potent and potentially more dangerous than GHB when administered via this route.  相似文献

HAEMOPHILIA A is generally regarded as a hereditary deficiency of antihaemophilic globulin (factor VIII). Some investigators, however, believe that antihaemophilic globulin may be inhibited rather than deficient. Most recent studies with monospecific antisera against antihaemophilic globulin have shown that patients with haemophilia A possess normal amounts of factor VIII, but which is biologically inactive2,3. Furthermore, treating plasma from patients with haemophilia A and von Willebrand's disease with succinic acid produced protein fractions with antihaemophilic activity separable by chromatography4. These observations indicate that haemophilia A might well be caused by a defective or inhibited factor VIII molecule.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Two odour receptor cells were physiologically identified within male antennal hair sensillae of the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar L, and the nun moth, L. monacha L. In the gypsy moth, one cell responded to (+)-disparlure, while a neighbouring cell responded to (-)-disparlure. In the nun moth both cells responded to (+)-disparlure. The lack of sensitivity to (-)-disparlure in the nun moth was corroborated by electroantennogram (EAG) recordings, which indicated no affinity to this enantiomer. Single cell responses of male gypsy moth to different concentrations of the synthetic enantiomers of disparlure were then compared to responses elicited by hexane extracts of female glands of both species. The gypsy moth's extracts stimulated almost exclusively the receptor cell specialized for (+)-disparlure, while both cells were simultaneously stimulated by the extracts of the nun moths. From the response characteristic of the cells it is estimated that pheromone production of the nun moth is about 10% (+) and 90% (-)-disparlure, and that of the gypsy moth is almost 100% (+)-disparlure. Stimulation of the antenna of each species by female gland extracts of both species did not indicate the presence of receptors for other hexane elutable pheromone components in either species.  相似文献

The genus Fascicularia Mez is revised as part of a study of the Bromeliaceae for the Flora de Chile. Morphological and anatomical investigation of herbarium and living material from cultivation as well as DNA-studies (RAPDs) in cultivated material has led us to conclude that Fascicularia bicolor (Ruiz & Pav.) Mez, the only one species in the genus, comprises two subspecies which are distinguished by their leaf anatomy and morphology.  相似文献

A new genus and species of loricate choanoflagellate, Kakoeca aniarctica Buck & Marchant gen. et sp.n. grown in rough culture from an Antarctic sea ice innoculum is described. This organism has a distinctive lorica morphology consisting of more than 200 costal strips arranged in transverse and longitudinal costae that arc perpendicular to one another in the posterior portion of the lorica. The transverse costae show declination with respect to the lorica axis in the anterior part of the lorica. The cell is suspended in the lorica by a robust protoplast suspensory membrane. This membrane blocks water flow from the posterior of the lorica necessitating water entry through the side of the lorica, an area where the maximum sized apertures in the lorica are found. Terminology (lorica lining and protoplast suspensory) is suggested for the two types of lorica membranes which have been found associated with loricas.  相似文献

Abstract: Rapidly deployable and effective methods are needed to contain free-ranging deer (Odocoileus spp.) during acute disease outbreaks. We evaluated efficacy of a 2.1-m-tall polypropylene mesh (poly-mesh) fence for containing ≥15 free-ranging white-tailed deer (O. virginianus) within a 42-ha area in eastern Nebraska, USA. We observed a 99% decrease in deer leaving the enclosure area after we installed fencing (1 deer jumped; 0.02 deer/hr) compared with prefence rates (5.26 deer/hr). However, 8 deer (53% of censused population) escaped the enclosure during a census drive after our study. Poly-mesh fencing may be effective in temporarily containing free-ranging deer during minimally disruptive deer removal actions such as trapping or sharpshooting.  相似文献
