The ontogenetic development of a solitary scleractinian coral, Flabellum distinctum Edwards & Haime, has been studied in serial thin section, with special attention being paid to epithecal nature in relation to septal growth. The term 'epitheca' has been confusingly used for two different skeletal structures: epitheca ( sensu stricto ) and marginotheca. The latter is here newly proposed. 'epitheca' is defined as a calcareous investment developed on the outside of other skeletal structures of a corallite. It can be distinguished from the marginotheca in section by lacking a dark line (calcification centre) and by being unrelated to the formation of septa. 'marginotheca' defines the outer margin of the main skeletal structures of a corallite. It has a dark line which functionally coincides with that of the eutheca. It is of primary origin, preceding formation of septa and provides the origin of the septa. The marginotheca is one of the more important and fundamental skeletal structures for coral classification.  相似文献

Intraspecific morphological variations of a Pleistocene solitary scleractinian coral, Cylindrophyllia orientatis (Yabe & Eguchi), have been examined based on 792 specimens. The specimens are discoidal to short cylindrical in shape, with no significant change in their diameter during skeletal growth. Septal arrangements of the coralla are observed on upper and basal surfaces. Septal numbers do not change through the ontogeny of each corallum, even when the last cycle of septa is incomplete. Septal arrangements and numbers are controlled by intrinsic genetic factors. Heights of the coralla are controlled by environmental factors where they lived If growth rates are presumed to be constant, heights can be regarded as indicating age of specimens. Assuming that this is the case, the survivorship curve shows that this fossil population had a constant death rate. Two varieties exist in this population: one has 20–28 septa, the other 30–48 septa, showing a dimorphic feature. According to previous phylogeographic studies, high mountains at low latitudes are important areas for the study of the evolutionary history of arctic–alpine plants in surviving the Pleistocene climatic oscillations. To evaluate this hypothesis, we elucidated the genetic structure of the arctic–alpine plant, Loiseleuria procumbens , in the Japanese archipelago, which corresponds to one of the southernmost limits of its distribution, using 152 individuals from 17 populations that covered the entire distribution of the Japanese archipelago and Sakhalin, in addition to samples from Sweden. Based on 854 bp of chloroplast DNA, we detected eight haplotypes. Along with haplotype distribution, strong genetic differentiation between populations in central and northern Japan was elucidated by a neighbour-joining tree (100%) and spatial analysis of molecular variance (79%), which is consistent with other alpine plants in Japan, regardless of the species' range. In addition, the southernmost populations from northern Japan showed specific genetic structure, although the remaining areas of northern Japan and Sakhalin harboured an homogenous genetic structure. Our results suggest that the populations in central Japan persisted for a long time during the Pleistocene climatic oscillation and that genetic divergence occurred in situ , supporting our hypothesis in conjunction with a previous study of another arctic–alpine plant, Diapensia lapponica subsp. obovata .  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 97 , 403–412.  相似文献

The ontogenetic development of two Recent scleractinian corals, Golaxea fascicularis (Linnaeus) and Acrhelia horrescens (Dana), has been studied in serial thin sections. The origin of the septotheca (a collective term including both eutheca and pseudotheca) is reconsidered. The eutheca is found to be a basic skeletal structure of corals and of primary origin, formed directly from the basal plate, not by the thickening of septa. The eutheca prepares the way for the formation of metasepta. The ontogenetic growth of the metasepta is illustrated. The pseudotheca is formed by fusion of neighbouring septa and is entirely of secondary origin. Its development is occasional. The essential mural structure of oculinid corals with pseudothecal walls is euthecal.  相似文献

Complicated genital structures are widely known in many animals. It is assumed that an increasing morphological complexity of genital structures would also increase the difficulty of inserting and withdrawing the structures. We examined the insertion and withdrawal mechanisms of extremely elongated genitalia in the Japanese leaf beetle, Lema (Lema) coronata. Insertion and withdrawal processes are completed quickly. Investigation of genital morphology showed that there are no protractor or retractor muscles attached to the elongated part. Instead, the elongated part is tightly enveloped by a membrane. Because of the close fit between the elongated part and its surrounding membrane, eversion of the membrane allows for insertion of the elongated part, and retraction of the membrane induces withdrawal of the elongated part. This surrounding membrane makes it possible to store the median ejaculatory guide (MEG) in a small genital cavity, with the basal portion of the elongated part extending internally against the entrance. This unusual character state is observed only in members of the subgenus Lema, which also have the elongated part. This condition can be considered to be a preadaptation for extreme elongation of genitalia. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 512–520.  相似文献

Oil palm fruits exposed to temperatures of 15 °C and belowshowed a significant increase in free fatty acid (FFA) contentin the mesocarp. This effect was most pronounced in fruits exposedto 5 °C when FFA levels exceeding 70% of the total oil wereobserved. The increase in FFA was accompanied by an increasein lipid-soluble phosphorus levels and a decrease in carotenecontent. Chilling did not have an effect on palm kernel oil.The results suggest the activation of a lipase in the mesocarpby low temperature stress. Key words: Lipase, oil palm, free fatty acid  相似文献
