Physiological changes due to aging are intensively studied as they have far-reaching implications for the mechanistic and
evolutionary theories of senescence. In this respect, metabolic rate has been suggested to play a role for the deterioration
and damage of cells and tissues with age, partly due to the generation of reactive oxygen species. To mitigate such damage,
individuals can be predicted to reduce basal metabolic rate (BMR) with age. This prediction has been verified in humans and
some laboratory animals but never in wild animal populations. We analyzed the change in BMR within individuals across years
in two wild populations of great tit (Parus major) differing in BMR. Great tits, living under stressful conditions towards
the northern limit of their distribution, decreased their BMR as they aged whereas no such decrease was found in a southern
population. Thus, we found a clear decline only in the population with the highest BMR levels. This study provides the first
evidence of an age-related decline in BMR for a wild homeotherm. 相似文献

Aquatic environments are the recipients of many sources of environmental stress that trigger both local and global changes. To evaluate the associated risks to organisms and ecosystems more sensitive and accurate strategies are required. The analysis of the microbiome is one of the most promising candidates for environmental diagnosis of aquatic systems. Culture-independent interconnected meta-omic approaches are being increasing used to fill the gaps that classical microbial approaches cannot resolve. Here, we provide a prospective view of the increasing application of these high-throughput molecular technologies to evaluate the structure and functional activity of microbial communities in response to changes and disturbances in the environment, mostly of anthropogenic origin. Some relevant topics are reviewed, such as: (i) the use of microorganisms for water quality assessment, highlighting the incidence of antimicrobial resistance as an increasingly serious threat to global public health; (ii) the crucial role of microorganisms and their complex relationships with the ongoing climate change, and other stress threats; (iii) the responses of the environmental microbiome to extreme pollution conditions, such as acid mine drainage or oil spills. Moreover, protists and viruses, due to their huge impacts on the structure of microbial communities, are emerging candidates for the assessment of aquatic environmental health. 相似文献

Four methods were tested for release of Eretmocerus nr. emiratus (Hymenoptera:Aphelinidae) against the silverleaf whitefly,Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring(Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), in cotton and melons. Ten thousand parasitoids were released in 0.1ha plots as follows: (1) as adults in each ofthe four quadrants of the plot, (2) as pupae ingel-caps affixed to the undersides of leaves inthe center of each of four quadrants, (3) at thecenter of the plot in shaded paper cups, and (4)to simulate release from a drop-box. Survivalafter 3 d, dispersal, mating success,sex-ratio, cost, and delivery speed werecompared among the four methods. Significantlymore parasitoids were recovered after 3 d whenparasitoids were released using the paper cupmethod, however, few parasitoids were capturedoutside the area directly adjacent to therelease point. More parasitoids wererecaptured near the release points with thegel-cap and adult release methods, but becausethere were four release points per plot, thedistribution was more uniform. Few parasitoidswere recovered when parasitoids were releasedusing a simulated drop-box method. Althoughthe sex-ratio of released parasitoids was±70% males, more than 30% of the recoveredparasitoids were female. In melons, where thedensity of whiteflies was more than 20 times asgreat as in cotton, the sex-ratio of recapturedparasitoids was greater than 70% females forall treatments. The most expensive releasemethod was the drop-box at $38.79 per ha,followed by $13.02 for adults, $7.62 forgel-caps, and $3.31 for the paper cups. Thegel-cap method was superior in providing a muchmore even distribution of individualsthroughout the field, especially in melons, butconsiderable time was necessary to prepare thegel-caps for release. Of the four releasemethods tested, releasing parasitoids in papercups resulted in higher numbers recaptured, alow cost, and rapid delivery speed. BecauseE. nr. emiratus does not dispersefar from the release point, however, a greaternumber of release points with fewer parasitoidsper point should provide a more evendistribution of parasitoids throughout therelease field. 相似文献

When Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species 150 years ago he consciously avoided discussing the origin of life. However, analysis of some other texts written by Darwin,
and of the correspondence he exchanged with friends and colleagues demonstrates that he took for granted the possibility of
a natural emergence of the first life forms. As shown by notes from the pages he excised from his private notebooks, as early
as 1837 Darwin was convinced that “the intimate relation of Life with laws of chemical combination, & the universality of
latter render spontaneous generation not improbable”. Like many of his contemporaries, Darwin rejected the idea that putrefaction
of preexisting organic compounds could lead to the appearance of organisms. Although he favored the possibility that life
could appear by natural processes from simple inorganic compounds, his reluctance to discuss the issue resulted from his recognition

A biased operational sex ratio (OSR) can have multiple, confounding effects on reproductive fitness. A biased OSR can increase harassment and mating activity directed towards potential mates but may also increase the ability of potential mates to choose a good partner if lower quality mates are screened out through competitive interactions. Additionally, a biased OSR may affect reproductive fitness through changes in male ejaculate content or in female reproductive response. We quantified how a male-biased OSR (1:1, 2:1, or 5:1 male to female) affected the size of a female??s first egg clutch and her offspring??s survivorship in the housefly, Musca domestica. A male-biased OSR increased female fitness: females laid more eggs in their first clutch, had increased offspring survivorship at a 2:1 versus 1:1 OSR, and had equivalent fitness with a 5:1 male to female OSR. Courtship activity increased when the OSR was male-biased but was not a significant predictor of female fitness. Trials where females chose their mates versus trials where a random male was chosen for them had equivalent first clutch sizes and offspring survivorship. These results suggest that there are cryptic effects from a male-biased OSR on female fitness that are most likely driven by pre-copulatory social environment. 相似文献

They exhibit diverse mating strategies and modes of conspecific communication. This review focuses on anole lizards, of which green anoles (Anolis carolinensis) have been most extensively studied. Research from other species is discussed in that context. The lifespan extension induced by 40% caloric restriction (CR) in rodents is accompanied by postponement of disease, preservation of function, and increased stress resistance. Whether CR elicits the same physiological and molecular responses in humans remains mostly unexplored. In the CALERIE study, 12% CR for 2 years in healthy humans induced minor losses of muscle mass (leg lean mass) without changes of muscle strength, but mechanisms for muscle quality preservation remained unclear. We performed high-depth RNA-Seq (387–618 million paired reads) on human vastus lateralis muscle biopsies collected from the CALERIE participants at baseline, 12- and 24-month follow-up from the 90 CALERIE participants randomized to CR and “ad libitum” control. Using linear mixed effect model, we identified protein-coding genes and splicing variants whose expression was significantly changed in the CR group compared to controls, including genes related to proteostasis, circadian rhythm regulation, DNA repair, mitochondrial biogenesis, mRNA processing/splicing, FOXO3 metabolism, apoptosis, and inflammation. Changes in some of these biological pathways mediated part of the positive effect of CR on muscle quality. Differentially expressed splicing variants were associated with change in pathways shown to be affected by CR in model organisms. Two years of sustained CR in humans positively affected skeletal muscle quality, and impacted gene expression and splicing profiles of biological pathways affected by CR in model organisms, suggesting that attainable levels of CR in a lifestyle intervention can benefit muscle health in humans. 相似文献
