Changes in the leaf solute composition of a number of perennialTriticeae in response to salinity are described. There was variationboth within and between species in the extent of Na and Cl accumulationin the leaves. In almost all cases leaf nitrate concentrationsdecreased substantially and orthophosphate concentrations increasedin response to salinity. There was no overall decrease in arange of soluble nitrogen-containing compounds nor in totalnitrogen. In Thinopyrum scirpeum there was an inverse relationshipbetween proline and glycinebetaine contents of different tissues,with proline levels higher in older leaves. A mechanically transmissible virus obtained from symptomless plants of a red raspberry selection imported into Scotland from Quebec, Canada was indistinguishable serologically from a cherry isolate of cherry rasp leaf virus (CRLV). The raspberry isolate, CRLV-R, was graft transmitted to several virus indicator species and cultivars of Rubus without inducing noticeable symptoms. In Chenopodium quinoa sap, CRLV-R lost infectivity after dilution to 10-5 or heating for 10 min at 60°C but was infective after 16 days (the longest period tested) at 18°, 4° or - 15°C. The virus particles are isometric, c. 28 nm in diameter, and were purified with difficulty from infected C. murale and C. quinoa plants. The particles comprise two nucleoprotein components with sedimentation coefficients of 89 and 115 S and are prone to aggregate during purification. When centrifuged to equilibrium in CS2SO4 solution, purified virus preparations formed two major components with p= 1·28 and 1·36 g/cm3. Virus particles contained two RNA species which, when denatured in glyoxal and electrophoresed in agarose gels, had estimated mol. wt of 2·56 × 106 (RNA-1) and 1·26 × 106 (RNA–2). Infectivity of CRLV-R RNA was abolished by treatment with proteinase K, suggesting that the RNA is linked to protein necessary for infectivity; RNA molecules contained polyadenylate. In reticulocyte lysates, CRLV-R RNA stimulated the incorporation of 3H-leucine, mainly into two polypeptides of estimated mol. wt 200 000 and 102 000. When electrophoresed in polyacrylamide gels, protein obtained from CRLV-R particles purified by centrifugation to equilibrium in Cs2SO4 separated into three bands with estimated mol. wt 26 000 , 23 000 and 21 000.  相似文献

Salt Tolerance in the Triticeae: Leymus sabulosus   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Elymus dahuhcus, Leymus giganteus, L. angustus, L. sabulosusand, to a lesser extent, L. triticoides, were found to tolerate200 mol m–3 NaCl in solution culture. Elymus dahuricusdiffered from the Leymus species in its ion-uptake characteristics,showing a greater uptake of Cl and Na and a greater loss ofK from the shoots. In a more detailed experiment on Leymus sabulosusit was found that transpiration rates altered rapidly in responseto changes in external salinity whereas the accumulation ofNa and Cl in the leaves exhibited a lag of several days. Insalt stressed L. sabulosus Cl partially replaced the high levelsof nitrate found in the leaves of control plants. Glycinebetainelevels increased in the leaves from 8.0 mol m–3 plantsap in the controls to 28 mol m–3 plant sap at 250 molm–3 NaCl. ABSTRACT.
  • 1 A study was made of the insect species present on twenty-eight colonies of H.chamaecistus Mill, in 1978 ranging in size (cover) from 0.4 m2 to about 6500 m2 and separated from nearest large neighbours by distances up to 6.5 km. Twenty-three insect species were collected of which nine or ten were more or less monophagous.
  • 2 There was a clear relationship between species richness and size of host colony. Sites with less than 30 m2 of rock-rose, about 67% of those in the study area, were likely to have less than half of the monophagous species. Distance to neighbouring colonies did not contribute significantly to species richness.
  • 3 The consistency of results from year to year was examined at five sites re-sampled in 1979. The 1978 data were also used to compare‘expected’and observed faunas at five new sites sampled in 1979 based upon the species-area relationship and the relative frequency of species at known sites.
  • 4 Insect dispersal was examined using a suction trap placed near the largest rock-rose site. Colonization of new sites was studied by experimental outplanting of pot-grown plants.
  • 5 These direct observations, and the monitoring of fourteen sites for 5 years, suggested that colonization and interchange of faunas were rare events. The experimental introduction of one to five species at four sites showed in several cases that the sites were suitable for the species, and that introduction could significantly enhance a site's complement.

SOME humans metabolize the commonly used artificial sweetener, cyclamate, to cyclohexylamine (CHA) and N-hydroxycyclo-hexylamine (N-OHCHA). There have been three reports1–3 that cyclamate and its metabolic byproducts cause a significant amount of cytogenetic damage in cultured human cells and the bone marrow and spermatogonial cells of the rat, but unfortunately they do not give quantitative cytogenetic data, other than the percentages of cells with “breaks”. In our experiments, we attempted to detect significant cytogenetic damage to human leucocytes treated in vitro or in a host-mediated assay system with CHA or N-OHCHA. At the same time, bone marrow from Chinese hamsters was studied for cytogenetic effects after daily injections of CHA.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The hypothesis that dissolved humic material (DHM) stimulates bacterial involvement in phosphorus transformations and may thus lead to decreased accessibility of phosphorus to algae was investigated by studying three small forest lakes in southern Finland representing a wide range of concentrations of DHM. 2. Other chemical differences between the three lakes were slight, although the most humic lake exhibited higher concentrations of total phosphorus and of molybdate-reactive phosphorus. Bacterial biomass did not differ significantly between the lakes, but algal biomass was significantly lower at higher DHM concentrations. Consequently the ratio of algal biomass to bacterial biomass was significantly lower in the most humic lake. 3. Uptake of phosphorus from added 33PO4 was partitioned between algal and bacterial size fractions by differential filtration. No significant variation between lakes was found in the proportion of particulate 33P recovered from the algal fraction. 4. Turnover times for phosphate were significantly longer in the most humic lake and also showed lower variability. In general turnover times were long in comparison with values reported from many other lakes. Only briefly in mid summmer did turnover times in two of the lakes shorten to values which would indicate that demand for phosphate was outstripping supply. 5. Short-term storage of samples from the most humic lake stimulated biological incorporation of 33P, but additions of nitrogen and iron had little effect on phosphate uptake. 6. In these small forest lakes it is probable that no single nutrient consistently limits plankton development. Since no evidence was found that DHM shifts the balance of plankton phosphate uptake away from algae towards bacteria, the influence of DHM on phosphorus transformations may rather be through chemical regulation of free phosphate availability.  相似文献

Most energy budgets for marine gastropods lack a measured mucusterm. This is a major omission since mucus is widespread inmolluscan physiological processes. In this paper we outlinemethods for estimating mucus production in the intertidal gastropod,Patella vulgata L. This species uses mucus primarily for adhesionand locomotion. Pedal mucus production rates were measured inaerial environments of 70% relative humidity (RH) and 100% RHand in seawater. Animals in 70% RH did not move, while thosein 100% RH and seawater were mobile. Animals in 100% RH showedthe highest mucus production rate. Those in seawater secretedabout 75% of the mucus produced in 100% RH and those in 70%RH only about 40% of that produced in 100% RH. Significant logarithmicrelationships between mucus production rate and whole dry weightof animal, and mucus production rate and shell length were foundin all cases. The mucus term in the energy budget was calculated as 23% ofingestion both for individuals and for a specific population.This is much higher than the estimate of 4% of Wright &Hartnoll (1981). We have recalculated an energy budget for Patellavulgata to include the substantial mucus term. The recalculatedbudget is structurally different from the original budget. Sea urchins are widely considered to be the major grazers in temperate subtidal systems, with herbivorous fish being browsers of minor importance. This paper reviews spatial and temporal patterns in these herbivores on rocky reels in temperate Australasia, with the aim of assessing their relative impacts on patch structure and dynamics. Herbivorous fishes are widespread and make up a significant numerical component the reel fish fauna. Sea urchins are also abundant, but not all geographic locations support actively grazing species. Both fish and sea urchins exhibit distinct patterns of distribution among depth strata. Within depth strata, all herbivores are restricted to (sea urchins) or forage preferentially in (fish) particular habitat patches, causing a mosaic of different feeding activities. These patches are either related to specific features of the habitat (e.g. Kelp patches, topography) or behavioural interactions. Foraging by sea urchins and demersal-nesting damselfishes is intense and persistent, whereas in the kelp-feeding fish Odax cyanomelas, foraging reaches greatest intensity at predictable locations during a few months of every year. Many fish and sea urchins consume some algae in preference to others. However, feeding preferences may determine the nature of the impact only in fishes. For sea urchins, preference may occasionally determine the order in which algae are consumed, but at high densities they consume all available macroalgae. Impacts of both types of herbivore on the abundance of algae have been recorded. Some sea urchins (e.g. Evechinus chloroticus, Centrostephanus rodgersii) appear to severely modify biogenic habitat structure by maintaining ‘barrens’ (areas devoid of macroalgae) over long periods. In contrast to this, the effects of fishes may be more transitory (e.g. seasonal impact of Odax cyanomelas on brown algae) or occur at smaller spatial scales (e.g. nest sites maintained by male Parma victoriae) Herbivorous and other fishes appear to respond to spatial patterns in algal distributions, rallier than having it major impact upon them. The relative effects of fish and sea urchins on the long-term dynamics of kelp forests are unknown, hut temporal patterns in herbivore abundance and behaviour, and algal demography arc urgent targets for research.  相似文献
