Lake Baringo is a shallow equatorial lake. This paper reports a diel study of the depth-time distribution of phytoplankton
and photosynthesis at one location in Lake Baringo on 10 March 1989. The water column shows a pattern of diurnal stratification
probably accentuated by the high turbidity of the water and therefore rapid attenuation of solar energy. This stratified pattern
breaks down at night due to atmospheric cooling and the regular onset of winds in the early evening. The phytoplankton is
dominated byMicrocystis aeruginosa with some associated epiphytes. It concentrates in the narrow euphotic zone during the diurnal period of stratification due
to buoyancy of theMicrocystis; evening breakdown of the thermocline results in the phytoplankton being mixed throughout the water column. A series of measurements
of photosynthesis throughout the diurnal period gives an areal rate of 3.8 g O2 m−2 d−1. The relationship between this value and the level of fish exploitation in Lake Baringo is discussed. The diel cycle in Lake

A linkage map of the porcine genome has been developed by segregation analysis of 239 genetic markers. Eighty-one of these markers correspond to known genes. Linkage groups have been assigned to all 18 autosomes plus the X Chromosome (Chr). As 69 of the markers on the linkage map have also been mapped physically (by others), there is significant integration of linkage and physical map data. Six informative markers failed to show linkage to these maps. As in other species, the genetic map of the heterogametic sex (male) was significantly shorter (16.5 Morgans) than the genetic map of the homogametic sex (female) (21.5 Morgans). The sex-averaged genetic map of the pig was estimated to be 18 Morgans in length. Mapping information for 61 Type I loci (genes) enhances the contribution of the pig gene map to comparative gene mapping. Because the linkage map incorporates both highly polymorphic Type II loci, predominantly microsatellites, and Type I loci, it will be useful both for large experiments to map quantitative trait loci and for the subsequent isolation of trait genes following a comparative and candidate gene approach. 相似文献

Resonances for the ketone bodies 3-D-hydroxybutyrate, acetone and acetoacetate are readily detected in serum, plasma and urine samples from fasting and diabetic subjects by 1H n.m.r. spectroscopy at 400 MHz. Besides the simultaneous observation of metabolites, the major advantage of n.m.r. is that little or no pretreatment of samples is required. N.m.r. determinations of 3-D-hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate, lactate, valine and alanine were compared with determinations made with conventional assays at six 2-hourly intervals after insulin withdrawal from a diabetic subject. The n.m.r. results closely paralleled those of other assays although, by n.m.r., acetoacetate levels continued to rise rather than reaching a plateau 4h after insulin withdrawal. The 3-D-hydroxybutyrate/acetoacetate ratio in urine during withdrawal gradually increased to the value observed in plasma (3.0 +/- 0.2) as determined by n.m.r. The acetoacetate/acetone ratio in urine (17 +/- 6) was much higher than in plasma (2.5 +/- 0.7). Depletion of a mobile pool of fatty acids in plasma during fasting, as seen by n.m.r., paralleled that seen during insulin withdrawal. These fatty acids were thought to be largely in chylomicrons, acylglycerols and lipoproteins, and were grossly elevated in plasma samples from a non-insulin-dependent diabetic and in cases of known hyperlipidaemia. 相似文献

Sera from 680 non-diabetic subjects with suspected autoimmune disease were screened for 13 different antibodies. Of the 582 sera found to contain these antibodies, nine bound insulin in an IgG specific enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (micro ELISA). Four of the sera bound human, porcine, and bovine insulins and five bound exclusively human insulin. "Cold" human, porcine, and bovine insulins each displaced, in a dose dependent manner, the four sera which bound all three insulins, but only human insulin displaced the remaining five, porcine and bovine insulins having little or no effect in concentrations up to 1000 U/1. These observations point to the existence of autoantibodies specifically against human insulin in some subjects with established autoimmunity. 相似文献

We examined the accuracy of pulmonary cytology in 224 consecutive patients being evaluated for lung cancer. The diagnostic yeild of specimens obtained by various methods, including flexible fiber optic bronchoscopy (FFB), was compared. Among 69 patients with lung cancer, a cytologic diagnosis was made in 87%, including 73% with peripheral tumors. Prebronchoscopy sputa were positive in 50%, bronchial washings in 63%, postbronchoscopy sputa in 82% and bronchial brushings in 59% of the patients. In only one patient was the bronchial brush specimen the only positive cytologic specimen. Normal FFB and small cell undifferentiated cancer were found with increased frequency (P less than 0.05) among the nine patients (13%) with false-negative cytology. Among 155 patients with nonmalignant lung disease, 16 (10%) had false-positive specimens; this finding was significantly related (P less than 0.05) to necrotizing pneumonia in 13 of the 16 patients (81%). The overall diagnostic accuracy of cytology showed 87% sensitivity and 90% specificity, and the predictive value of a positive specimen was 79%. In this study, one positional mode, the vertical leap, is selected from the larger repertoire of habitual behaviors of whichCercopithecus aethiops sabaeus is capable, and is quantitatively analyzed. A cinematographic biomechanical analysis of the vertical leap provides a view
of the kinematics (time-space properties of the leap) as well as the kinetics (or force properties) of the leap. These are
then discussed with regard to anatomical potential. The analysis elucidates three distinct phases of motion during which the
moving body segments linked via their connecting joints, affect one another in the production of the leap. The total positional
adaptation ofC. a. sabaeus may only be determined after similar analyses are performed for all postural and locomotor modes. The present detailed analysis
of vertical leaping is intended to present data for this one positional mode found to be of primary importance in the arboreal
environment and in moving from the ground into the trees. In addition a methodology is illustrated for application in similar
primate positional studies.
