Summary The Purkinje fibres of bovine heart were investigated immunohistochemically by use of monoclonal antibodies with specificity against the glycoproteins Thy-1 and Gp120, expressed in human brain. The existence and expression in bovine tissues (brain and thymus) of antigens displaying similar properties and immunochemical crossreactivity with monoclonal antibodies against the human antigens were confirmed.Both these antigens, as identified by use of anti Thy-1 and anti-Gp120 monoclonal antibodies were found to be associated with the membranes of the impulse conduction system. The presence of the antigens was seen in areas facing other conduction cells. No parts of the cells facing the basal membrane of the fibres were stained. The continuous staining between the cells was different from that of desmosome related proteins. These findings may have physiological and functional implications and are interesting in relation to recent evidences suggesting that the conduction tissue might be a derivative of the neural crest.  相似文献

The male pregnancy of pipefishes and seahorses has led to the inference that females compete most intensely for access to mates, because males limit female reproduction. However, recent work has shown that in different species either sex may be the predominant competitor for mates. In this family, there is an apparent association between the mating pattern and the sex roles: polygamous species show reversed sex roles whereas monogamous species exhibit 'conventional' sex roles. These studies emphasize that sex role reversal is not synonymous with male parental care.  相似文献

We review the history of Quaternary pollen analysis from 1916 to the present-day, with particular emphasis on methodological and conceptual developments and on the early pioneers of the subject. The history is divided into three phases—the pioneer phase 1916–1950, the building phase 1951–1973, and the mature phase 1974–present-day. We also explore relevant studies prior to Lennart von Post’s seminal lecture in 1916 in Kristiania (Oslo) in an attempt to trace how the idea of Quaternary pollen analysis with quantitative pollen counting and stratigraphical pollen diagrams developed.  相似文献

Analysis of copia sequence variation within and between Drosophila species   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The sequences of the 5' long-terminal repeat (LTR) and adjacent leader regions of 27 full-length copia elements isolated from natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster, D. simulans, and D. mauritiana are presented. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that although D. melanogaster copia elements are distinct from those of D. simulans and D. mauritiana, the elements of these latter two species are not distinguishable from one another. LTRs and adjacent 5' leader regions of elements isolated from D. simulans and D. mauritiana are structurally similar to one another and carry substantial deletional variation mapping to regions previously identified as being of potential importance for copia expression.   相似文献

This investigation is based on a species inventory m semi-natural pastures, remnants of an "old" traditional landscape, in Sweden The aim was to examine relationships between species richness and pasture area, neighbour pasture area, distance to nearest pasture, pasture heterogeneity and fertilization Species occurrences were also investigated individually for the same parameters Pasture area, neighbour pasture area and distance to nearest pasture were not found to influence species richness Habitat heterogeneity and indications that pastures had been influenced by fertilization were however associated with both species richness and species occurrences Heterogeneity had only positive effects whereas the effects of fertilization were only negative Species regional abundance pattern tended to be bimodal, as predicted by the core-satellite hypothesis No correlation between abundance and plant height, or seed size was found, as would have been expected if competitive dominance effects determined species regional abundance There was a close to significant tendency that pasture area was positively associated with occurrences of species with features favouring a high seed dispersal capacity We suggest that the previous history of pasture distribution and management may be of vital importance for present day species abundance pattern, even though this remains obscure in the recent landscape  相似文献

Intron sequences of the chloroplast generps16 from 46 species were used to examine phylogenetic relationships indicated by nrDNA ITS sequence variation in the tribeSileneae (Caryophyllaceae, Caryophylloideae). This region has previously not been utilized for phylogenetic purposes but the results presented here suggest that it is a consistent and valuable complement to the ITS sequences. Therps16 intron trees are largely congruent with the ITS trees. All the major hypotheses suggested by the ITS data are supported, often at similar bootstrap levels. The joint usage ofrps16 intron and ITS sequences provides a powerful tool for resolving many of the difficult taxonomic issues in the tribeSileneae. Dedicated to emer. Time learning and anticipatory activity were studied in five groups of 16–17 Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) using self‐feeding devices with individual recognition (PIT (Passive Integrated Transponders)‐tags). The fish were kept under a LD 12:12 h cycle and periods of free access to the food were alternated with periods of time‐limited (2 h) access to food. Self‐feeding activity was significantly related to the light period in unrestricted conditions while related to the feeding periods during time‐limited access to food. The fish learned to concentrate their feeding activity to the restricted mealtime (>50% of the daily self‐feeding activity) within 10 d. The food anticipatory activity, measured as an increased self‐feeding activity before the feeding time and as aggressive interactions close to the trigger, was significant in both cases. The dominant individuals increased the trigger activity in advance of the time‐restricted reward period and subdominant individuals approached the trigger also in advance, inducing aggressive interactions. Thus, anticipating and learning a temporally predictable food source was pronounced in groups of self‐feeding Arctic charr.  相似文献

Phosphatidic acid phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.4) was purified 30-fold by ammonium sulfate fractionation and hydroxyapatite chromatography from the soluble fraction of rat liver. ADP was found to stimulate the enzyme activity with half-maximal stimulation at 0.2 mM. Similar effects were seen when ADP was replaced by GDP or CDP. In contrast, ATP inhibited the enzyme; half-maximal inhibition observed at 0.2 mM. Again, the degree of inhibition did not differ when GTP or CTP replaced ATP. Thus, the structure of the base part of the nucleotide was not critical for mediating these effects. The positions of the phosphate groups in the nucleotide structure were however found to be of importance for the enzyme activity. Variations in the structure of the phosphate ester bound at the 5'-position had a pronounced effect on phosphatidic acid phosphatase activity. The effect of nucleotides depended on pH, and the inhibition by ATP was more pronounced at pH levels lower than 7.0, whereas the stimulatory effect of ADP was virtually the same from pH 6.0 to pH 8.0. The enzyme showed substrate saturation kinetics with respect to phosphatidic acid, with an apparent Km of 0.7 mM. Km increased in the presence of ATP, whereas both apparent Vmax and Km increased in the presence of ADP, suggesting different mechanisms for the action of the two types of nucleotides. The results indicated that physiological levels of nucleotides with a diphosphate or a triphosphate ester bound at the 5'-position of the ribose moiety influenced the activity of phosphatidic acid phosphatase. The possibility is discussed that these effects might be of importance for the regulation of triacylglycerol biosynthesis.  相似文献
