Summary An 8 × 8 full diallel experiment based on 4 bunch plus 4 spreading types of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) was conducted over three environments. For both number of pods and pod yield, additive, nonadditive and reciprocal cross effects were detected and these were also influenced by changes in environments. For number of pods additive genetic variance was predominant whereas it was approximately equal to non-additive genetic variance for pod yield. Graphical analysis revealed the presence of strong non-allelic interaction for number of pods whereas for pod yield absence of dominance and/or presence of non-allelic interaction was evident.Part of Ph.D. Thesis of the first author  相似文献

Paeonia officinalis L., a rare and protected species, mostly occurs in open and semi‐open habitats and is often threatened by forest and shrubland spread. To explore the still undocumented dispersal features of this species, we address the following questions. What are the relative roles of ants, small rodents, and birds as diaspore removers in open habitat and woodland? Which animal groups constitute the potential disperser assemblage and how do they shape the spatial patterns of seed dispersal? Do diaspores fit the ornithochory syndrome or do they only mimic fleshy fruits? Two experiments were performed to quantify diaspore fall and diaspore removal by animal groups, above ground and on the ground. Ants did not contribute to dispersal. In open habitats, no seed removal was detected, either on follicles or once diaspores had fallen to the ground. In woodland, diaspores were weakly removed by vertebrates on follicles and were mainly removed by rodents on the ground. As a consequence, we suggest that long‐distance dispersal events are very rare, weakening the possible escape into space of populations subject to forest spread. Several traits indicate that diaspores fit the ornithochory syndrome, but other traits are strongly reminiscent of mimetic diaspores deceiving bird dispersers. © 2007 CNRS. A study of the fruits of modern members of the Vicieae (vetch tribe) has been undertaken to seek morphological, micromorphological and anatomical criteria which may assist in the identification of the archaeological remains of pods and in particular ones that may be useful for the diagnosis of their wild or domesticated status. The study included wild and domesticated Pisum (peas), Lens (lentils) and Vicia (common vetch) and some of their wild relatives found in the Old World. The results show that the micromorphological features of the pod surface tend to be highly variable, and do not distinguish the taxa. Most importantly, the pods of less-developed domesticated taxa show no reduction in the number of fibrous layers in the pod wall compared with those of their closest wild relatives, and no morphological or anatomical evidence has been found to indicate the dehiscent or indehiscent status of a pod. This appears to challenge some of our accepted wisdom on the mechanics of legume dehiscence. Received August 8, 2001 / Accepted January 15, 2002  相似文献

Abstract The intensity of seed predation the invasive tropical legume Leucaena leucocephala by the bruchid Acanthoscelides macropthalmus was investigated in south‐eastern Queensland, Australia. The number of seeds damaged by A. macropthalmus as a proportion of total seeds available was found to increase the longer the pods remained on the tree. Seed predation ranged from a mean of 10.75% of seeds on pods that remained on the plant for 1 month and increased to 53.54% for pods that remained of the plant for 4 months. The low bruchid populations at high pod densities results in ‘predator satiation’. However, pods dehisce over time and the proportion of pods available over time to the bruchid correspondingly declines. By the time bruchid densities build up, most pods have dehisced and the seeds consequently escape predation. As a result the number of seeds lost to bruchid damage increases only marginally over time. Despite the levels of seed predation observed over the course of the study, the number of seeds in the soil seedbank almost doubled over time increasing from 8.5 seeds m?3 to 15.5 seeds m?3 over a 4‐month period. Levels of seed predation and addition of seeds to the soil seedbank were not correlated. The taxonomic (subspecies) status and apparency of host plants as measured by plant and patch traits (average plant height, density of podding plants and patch size) did not influence levels of seed predation. Pre‐dispersal seed predation studies need to take into account the pod/seed retention behaviour of the plant. The ability of the bruchid to regulate the invasiveness of Leucaena through influencing its demography is likely to be diminished if the insect populations cannot increase rapidly enough to use the seeds before pod dehiscence.  相似文献

Previous field experiments have shown that, for the annual herb Vicia sativa, leaf area lost to herbivory results in reduced number of fruit (pods) produced per plant as well as fewer seeds per pod. We conducted a controlled garden experiment to determine the precise relationship between level of defoliation and various measures of maternal fitness through fruit and seed. We employed manual clipping of individual leaflets of newly produced leaves to 25% increments of damage (from 0% to 100%) over the entire period of development and flowering of these annual herbs, harvesting pods when filled but not dehisced. We found significant reduction in number of pods, number of seeds, total seed mass, and individual seed mass with leaf area lost. Even with the highest levels of defoliation over the life of the individual, plants still produced a substantial number of pods and seeds. Seeds produced by plants in all treatment groups showed similar percentages of germination and time to germination.  相似文献

Taxonomy : Moniliophthora roreri (Cif.) H.C. Evans et al. 1978 ; Phylum Basidiomycota; Class Agaricomycetes; Order Agaricales; Family Marasmiaceae; Genus Moniliophthora. Biology : Moniliophthora roreri attacks Theobroma and Herrania species causing frosty pod rot. Theobroma cacao (cacao) is the host of major economic concern. Moniliophthora roreri is a hemibiotroph with a long biotrophic phase (45–90 days). Spore masses, of apparent asexual origin, are produced on the pod surface after initiation of the necrotrophic phase. Spores are spread by wind, rain and human activity. Symptoms of the biotrophic phase can include necrotic flecks and, in some cases, pod malformation, but pods otherwise remain asymptomatic. Relationship to Moniliophthora perniciosa : Moniliophthora roreri and Moniliophthora perniciosa, causal agent of witches’ broom disease of cacao, are closely related. Their genomes are similar, including many of the genes they carry which are considered to be important in the disease process. Moniliophthora perniciosa, also a hemibiotroph, has a typical basidiomycete lifestyle and morphology, forming clamp connections and producing mushrooms. Basidiospores infect meristematic tissues including flower cushions, stem tips and pods. Moniliophthora roreri does not form clamp connections or mushrooms and infects pods only. Both pathogens are limited to the Western Hemisphere and are a threat to cacao production around the world. Agronomic importance : Disease losses caused by frosty pod rot can reach 90% and result in field abandonment. Moniliophthora roreri remains in the invasive phase in the Western Hemisphere, not having reached Brazil, some islands within the Caribbean and a few specific regions within otherwise invaded countries. Disease management : The disease can be managed by a combination of cultural (for example, maintenance of tree height and removal of infected pods) and chemical methods. These methods benefit from regional application, but can be cost prohibitive. Breeding for disease resistance offers the greatest potential for frosty pod rot management and new tolerant materials are becoming available.  相似文献

Aims How seed dispersal distance is related to various factors is a major challenge for seed ecologists. However, there are different answers as to which factor is most important in determining wind dispersal distance. This study is to quantitatively describe the relationship between various factors and primary wind dispersal distance of winged diaspores. Methods The dispersal distances of five morphologies of winged diaspores in Zygophyllum xanthoxylum (Zygophyllaceae) were measured under controlled conditions in a wind tunnel. The explanatory power of environmental factor (i.e. wind speed), plant trait (i.e. release height) and diaspore attributes (i.e. wing loading (the ratio of diaspore mass to projected area), settlement-velocity, shape index (the variance of diaspore length, width and thickness)) to the variation in dispersal distance was assessed by releasing diaspores at varying wind speeds and release heights.Important findings Wind speed and seed release height were the strongest explanatory factors to dispersal distance, contributing 41.1% and 24.8% (P < 0.01) to total variation in dispersal distance, respectively. Wind speed accounted more for relatively light disc-shaped seeds than for relatively heavy spherical seeds. Wing loading, shape index and settlement-velocity explained 9.0% (P < 0.01), 1.4% (P < 0.01) and 0.9% (not significant) of the variation in dispersal distance, respectively. From disc-shaped to four-winged diaspores, relative contributions of wing loading and shape index decreased but contribution of settlement-velocity increased. The relative contributions of various factors to wind seed dispersal distance may change with the change in seed morphology.

The effects of pod age on oviposition, and on egg and larval survival of the cocoa pod borer (CPB), Conopomorpha cramerella (Snellen), were investigated. CPB were allowed to oviposit on a batch of 50 pods for a period of 7 days over several exposure dates. Numbers of CPB eggs/pod and survival to larval emergence from the pods were recorded. Pods were harvested when ripe and analyzed for larval survival within the pod. The oviposition pattern varied with pod age. Older pods less than 7 weeks before ripening (WBR) were preferred, suggesting greater nutritional value or chemical attraction of the older pods. The proportion of eggs parasitized by Trichogrammtoidea bactrae fumata Nagaraja (TBF), the number of eggs lost and the proportion surviving to larval emergence from the pod were independent of pod age. Egg parasitism was low, implying that TBF was not an effective natural enemy. Mass-releases of TBF should be intensified during cropping periods with higher proportions of susceptible pods (<10 WBR). Survival of larvae in the presclerotic layer (preSCL) was high and independent of pod age. Larval mortality at the SCL (sclerotic layer) was dependent on pod age and was high in older pods. Larval density influenced the survival of larvae inside the pod and was dependent on pod age. Larval mortality associated with SCL hardness and thickness is one of the criteria for the selection of CPB resistant cocoa clones.  相似文献

The complete or partial loss of shattering ability occurred independently during the domestication of several crops. Therefore, the study of this trait can provide an understanding of the link between phenotypic and molecular convergent evolution. The genetic dissection of ‘pod shattering’ in Phaseolus vulgaris is achieved here using a population of introgression lines and next‐generation sequencing techniques. The ‘occurrence’ of the indehiscent phenotype (indehiscent versus dehiscent) depends on a major locus on chromosome 5. Furthermore, at least two additional genes are associated with the ‘level’ of shattering (number of shattering pods per plant: low versus high) and the ‘mode’ of shattering (non‐twisting versus twisting pods), with all of these loci contributing to the phenotype by epistatic interactions. Comparative mapping indicates that the major gene identified on common bean chromosome 5 corresponds to one of the four quantitative trait loci for pod shattering in Vigna unguiculata. None of the loci identified comprised genes that are homologs of the known shattering genes in Glycine max. Therefore, although convergent domestication can be determined by mutations at orthologous loci, this was only partially true for P. vulgaris and V. unguiculata, which are two phylogenetically closely related crop species, and this was not the case for the more distant P. vulgaris and G. max. Conversely, comparative mapping suggests that the convergent evolution of the indehiscent phenotype arose through mutations in different genes from the same underlying gene networks that are involved in secondary cell‐wall biosynthesis and lignin deposition patterning at the pod level.  相似文献

Wild relatives of crops are an important source of resistance genes against insect pests. However, it is important to identify the accessions of wild relatives of crops with different mechanisms of resistance to broaden the basis and increase the levels of resistance to insect pests. Therefore, we studied the feeding behavior of pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera, which is the most damaging pest of pigeonpea, in relation to biochemical characteristics of the pod surface exudates in a diverse array of germplasm accessions belonging to 12 species of pigeonpea wild relatives. Feeding by H. armigera larvae was significantly lower on the unwashed or water-, methanol-, or hexane-washed pods of Canajus sericeus, C. scarabaeoides, Flemingia bracteata, F. stricta, and Rhynchosia aurea than those of C. acutifolius, C. albicans, C. cajanifolius, C. lineatus, D. ferruginea, P. scariosa, R. bracteata, and the cultivated pigeonpea, C. cajan genotypes, ICPL 87, and ICPL 332, although there were a few exceptions. The methanol-washed pods of wild relatives were less preferred for feeding by the H. armigera larvae than the unwashed pods, but the hexane-washed pods were preferred more than the unwashed pods. The results suggested that methanol extracted the phagostimulants from the pod surface, while hexane removed the antifeedants. The high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) finger printing of methanol and hexane pod surface extracts showed qualitative and quantitative differences in compounds present on the pod surface of different wild relatives of pigeonpea. Some of the peaks in HPLC profiles were associated with feeding preference of the third-instar larvae of H. armigera. There was considerable diversity in wild relatives of pigeonpea as revealed by principal component analysis based on HPLC fingerprints of pod surface extracts in methanol and hexane, and H. armigera feeding on the pods. Wild pigeonpea accessions with low amounts of phagostimulants and high amounts of antifeedants may be used for introgression of resistance genes into the cultivated pigeonpea to develop varieties with broad-based resistance to H. armigera. There is considerable diversity among the wild relatives of pigeonpea, and the accessions with resistance to pod borer. These can be used to broaden the basis and increase the levels of resistance to H. armigera.  相似文献

Four field experiments were sown with AMV‐infected or healthy seed of burr medic (Medicago polymorpha) and grazed by sheep; two were sown with cv. Circle Valley and two with cv. Santiago. Seed‐infected plants acted as primary sources for virus spread by naturally occurring aphids. Insecticides and admixture with annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum), a non‐host of AMV, suppressed virus spread to different extents in the plots sown with infected seed. Effects of the different amounts of virus spread obtained on overall concentration of the oestrogenic compound coumestrol (dihydroxycoumestan) in dry stems and pods, and on seed production were measured in the medic. With cv. Santiago, stem and pod coumestrol concentration values for plots sown with healthy seed were significantly smaller than those for all plots sown with infected seed regardless of whether they were sprayed. With cv. Circle Valley, the coumestrol values for stems from plots sown with healthy seed were significantly smaller than those for unsprayed plots sown with infected seed but not than those for sprayed plots or ones with grass admixtures, and there were no significant differences with pods. There was always a significant positive relationship between concentration of coumestrol in medic stems and percentage AMV infection of swards; this was also so with pods in two experiments. A linear model best fitted this relationship with cv. Circle Valley but a logarithmic model did so with cv Santiago. In glasshouse grown plants, the coumestrol content of dried medic shoots was increased 11 (cv. Circle Valley) and five (cv. Santiago) times by AMV infection. AMV increased mean coumestrol concentrations up to 256 ppm (field) and 237 ppm (glasshouse) in stems and 223 ppm in pods (field). Sowing healthy seed in new pasture swards was an effective strategy for minimising coumestrol accumulation in burr medic swards. Two, but not single, applications of a newer generation pyrethroid insecticide to swards in which AMV was spreading significantly diminished coumestrol accumulation but applying organophosphorus insecticide twice and carbamate insecticide repeatedly did not. Medic seed yields and individual seed weights were sometimes significantly increased by the treatments, suppression of AMV spread by regular carbamate sprays being sufficient to increase seed yield by 55%.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Several studies have demonstrated trade-offs between depth of seed dormancy and dispersal ability for diaspore-dimorphic species. However, relatively little is known about trade-offs between these two life history traits for a species that produces more than two diaspore morphs. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between seed dormancy and dispersal in Ceratocarpus arenarius, an amphi-basicarpic cold desert annual that produces a continuum of dispersal unit morphs.

Methods

A comparison was made of dispersal and dormancy breaking/germination responses of dispersal units from ground level (a), the middle of the plant canopy (c) and the top of the plant canopy (f). Various features of the morphology and mass of dispersal units and fruits (utricles) were measured. The role of bracteoles in diaspore dispersal by wind, settlement onto the soil surface and dormancy/germination was determined by comparing responses of intact dispersal units and fruits. Movement of dispersal units by wind and animals, seed after-ripening, germination phenology and the presence of water-soluble germination inhibitors in bracteoles were tested using standard procedures.

Key Results

Dispersal units a, c and f differed in morphology and mass; in the majority of cases, extremes were exhibited by a and f, with c being intermediate. Overall, relative dispersal ability was f > c > a, whereas relative intensity of dormancy was a > c > f. Bracteoles increased dispersal distance by wind, enhanced settlement of diaspores onto the soil surface and mechanically inhibited germination.

Conclusions

The results provide evidence for a model in which there is a continuous inverse-linear relationship between diaspore dispersal ability and depth of dormancy. Thus, dispersal unit heteromorphism of C. arenarius results in a continuum, from no dispersal ability/high dormancy (dispersal unit a) to high dispersal ability/low dormancy (unit f), which may be a bet-hedging strategy in the cold desert environment.  相似文献

Reproductive phenology of gorse (Ulex europaeus L., Genisteae, Fabaceae) is unusual in that the onset and duration of flowering vary greatly among individuals within populations: some plants initiate flowering in autumn or winter and continue flowering through spring, others initiate flowering in early spring. To understand the origin of this diversity and its ecological consequences, we investigated flowering phenology of randomly sampled individuals from five different natural populations in Brittany (France). Reproductive success was evaluated for individuals with contrasting flowering patterns, from 16 natural populations. Flower production, pod production, seed production and seed predation were estimated. Plants initiating flowering in spring produced larger numbers of flowers and pods over a shorter period than plants flowering from winter to spring, which produced few flowers and pods at a time but over a longer period. Pod production of long-flowering plants did not differ significantly between winter and spring, but their pods were more intensively attacked by seed predators in spring than in winter. We discuss our results in relation to biotic and abiotic parameters. We postulate that long-flowering can be interpreted as a bet-hedging strategy, spreading the risk of pod failure (rotting or freezing) in winter and of seed predation in spring.  相似文献

Plant dispersal is a very important ecological phenomenon, as it can enable species to move away from the parent plant. This contributes to shaping communities, determining patterns of distribution, landscape configuration, plant invasions and evolutionary processes. Measuring dispersal distance directly is difficult and thus, diaspore morphology can be used to make estimates. Previous research on the topic often resorts to analysing the diaspore’s morphology as if it was a bi-dimensional structure; when in many cases, diaspores have three-dimensional qualities. In this study, we show how estimates of wind dispersal potential of Ailanthus altissima can be considerably improved using morphological variables that succeed in describing the three-dimensional nature of samaras. We suggest that this reasoning could be extensively applied to research involving not only other species, but also multi-specific scenarios with a wide range of diaspore morphologies.  相似文献

Diaspore (e.g. seeds, fruits) dispersal is pivotal for plant communities and often involves several steps and different dispersing agents. Most studies focusing on diaspore dispersal by animals have highlighted the role of vertebrates, neglecting the role of ants in the diaspore dispersal of non-myrmecochorous plants. Diaspore dispersal by ants is especially relevant in the current scenario of declining of vertebrate populations and, consequently, collapse of the dispersal system of large-seeded plants. Although ants can never compensate for the dispersal service provided by vertebrates, they can mitigate the impact of vertebrate decline via removal of diaspores deposited on the ground. We have used a meta-analytical approach to investigate the contribution of ants in the removal of non-myrmecochorous diaspores (through vertebrate exclusion experiments). We considered the number of diaspore removal as effect size and factors such as plant growth forms, diaspore and ant size, habitat type as moderators. In addition, we investigated the role of such factors on the diaspore removal distance by ants. Ants played complementary role to non-myrmecochorous diaspore removal services provided by vertebrates (mean Hedges’ g of −0.30). The ant diaspore removal was 69% higher for diaspores from shrubs than that of tree diaspores and removal of small-sized diaspores were 69% and 70% higher in comparison to medium- and large-sized diaspores, respectively. Regarding the diaspore removal distance by ants, those of tree species were removed 32% farther than those of shrub species, and diaspores were removed three- times farther in the savanna than in rainforest ecosystems. Our results highlight the shrubs and small-sized diaspores. Regarding the diaspore removal distance, the ants can be crucial for the dispersal of tree diaspores and in the savanna ecosystems. Finally, considering the biodiversity crisis, the ants may play an even more important role than appreciated in diaspores dispersal.  相似文献

Patterns of seed and fruit production ofBauhinia ungulata, a small tree legume indigenous in tropical America, were studied in Costa Rica. Only about 8% of flowers produced fruits. The average pod had 19 ovules and about two thirds of these began seed development, with mature pods containing an average of 9.7 mature undamaged seeds. About half of the mature pods were damaged by herbivores and within these, 27% of ovules or seeds had been eaten. Among trees there was no significant variation in pod production, but the number of ovules per pod and seed production per pod varied significantly. Within infructescences most pods were retained at middle positions. Within pods, the probability of an ovule developing into a seed increased toward the distal end. The pattern of seed and fruit production in this species agrees well in general with that reported for other neotropical legumes. The abortion of seeds and fruits can be regarded as a way of controlling maternal investment, and as a response to herbivory.  相似文献

Obolinga zanonii Barneby is described as a new monotypic genus from disturbed cloud forest of the Sierra de Bahoruco—Massif de la Selle mountain system in southeastern Haiti and southwestern Dominican Republic. The genus is to be added to tribe Ingeae of Mimosaceae, and is believed on the basis of gross morphology, wood anatomy, and pollen structure to be nearest to the genusCojoba. From this it differs in a massive terete pod completely filled with a stack of large discoid seeds clothed in a lustrous papery testa and inertly dehiscent on the ground. The structurally comparable fruit of the Malayan genusCylindrokelupha, currently referred toArchidendron, is ascribed to parallelism. The species is illustrated with line drawings.  相似文献

Epidemiological studies of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides disease of cocoa   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The intensities of foliar infection (leaf blight and shot hole) and pod rot, caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, were recorded from a cocoa-areca mixed garden and a cocoa-monocrop garden during 2 years. The intensity of pod rot was recorded from both the gardens. The intensities of leaf blight and shot hole gradually increased from July, reached a peak during September-November, decreased thereafter and reached the lowest level during April-June. Increase in leaf infection was associated in both plantings and in both years with the period of rain (June-November). The phylloplane population of C. gloeosporioides also increased during June-November when the temperature tended to be low and constant with high rainfall and relative humidity. During this period there were few susceptible stages of pods (cherelles and young pods) and pod infection was very low. Nearly mature pods were free from infection. I n both years, pod infection was more in the cocoaareca mixed garden than' in the cocoa-monocrop; it was observed during January-May, when the susceptible stages were mostly prevalent but when the C. gloeosporioides population was low and the climatic factors appeared to be relatively unfavourable. This may be one reason for the lesser incidence of pod rot when compared to foliar disease.  相似文献
