Arboreal ant mosaics have been intensively investigated, but what generates these mosaics remains poorly understood. In this paper, we hypothesize that the dynamics of arboreal ant mosaics could be better understood by examining the ontogenetic succession of ants in tropical trees. We used three African pioneer tree species as biological models. Lophira alata (Ochnaceae) is a long-lived species that does not furnish any reward (i.e., extra-floral nectaries [EFNs], shelter) to ants, Anthocleista vogelii (Gentianaceae) bears extremely well-developed EFNs, and Barteria fistulosa (Passifloraceae) is a long-lived myrmecophyte providing both EFNs and domatia. For both L. alata and A. vogelii, we noted a succession of different associated ants as the plants grew and aged. Ground-nesting, arboreal-foraging ant species were the first associates, followed by arboreal species that build nests with the leaves of their host trees, together with some species nesting opportunistically in pre-existing cavities. Carton-building Crematogaster species were the last in this succession. The presence of EFNs on A. vogelii slows species turnover, demonstrating that the plant exerts some control over its ant associates. The comparison with B. fistulosa, which generally remains associated with the same plant-ant species during its entire ontogeny, highlights the importance of the selective attractiveness of the trees for their associated ants – or, perhaps, the existence of plant filters that screen arriving ants.

This study shows that, as with its intertidal counterpart, Nassarius festivus, the rate at which subtidal Nassarius siquijorensis moves towards food bait is similar for starved and well-fed individuals. This study also investigates another facet of nassariid nutrition related to the degree of hunger, i.e. the effect of simulated predation upon a feeding assemblage. Individuals which fed within 7 days, cease feeding and depart palatable food if crushed conspecifics are added. Between 7 and 13 days since its last meal, however, N. siquijorensis will feed when food is available, despite the possibility of predation. For the intertidal N. festivus, the critical time for hunger to override the risk of predation is between 14 and 21 days. The difference between subtidal and intertidal species may be due to a difference, in terms of days, that a meal can provide for their energy expenditure, particularly with regard to respiration. The bigger, subtidal, N. siquijorensis needs to feed more frequently than the smaller, intertidal, N. festivus.

1. Foraging animals are often faced with foods that vary in several important attributes, some of which may be in conflict with one another. For ectothermic animals, food temperature can be an important characteristic, as the consumption of cold foods is metabolically costly. 2. Here, the effect of food temperature on food preferences in the green‐headed ant Rhytidoponera metallica (Smith, 1858) was investigated. The first aim of the study was to determine how food concentration (caloric value) and relative food temperature influenced colony‐level preferences. We found that, all else being equal, green‐headed ant colonies preferred warmer food solutions over colder solutions, and more concentrated food solutions over less concentrated ones. 3. Next, the question of whether green‐head ant colonies could make trade‐offs between temperature and food concentration was tested. It was found that ant colonies switched their preferences in favour of a colder food solution when the colder food solution was 10 times more concentrated than the warmer food solution. 4. These experiments show that temperature is an important characteristic shaping food preferences in ants. Moreover, we show that colonies can make trade‐offs between food concentration and food temperature.

The fungus Rhizopus oligosporus (R. microsporus var. oligosporus) is traditionally used to make tempe, a fermented food based on soybeans. Interest in the fungus has steadily increased, as it can also ferment other substrates, produce enzymes, and treat waste material. R. oligosporus belongs to the R. microsporus group consisting of morphologically similar taxa, which are associated with food fermentation, pathogenesis, or unwanted metabolite production (rhizonins and rhizoxins). The ornamentation pattern, shape, and size of sporangiospores of 26 R. microsporus group strains and two R. oryzae strains were studied using low-temperature SEM (LT-SEM) and LM. This study has shown that: (1) LT-SEM generates images from well-conserved sporangiophores, sporangia, and spores. (2) Robust spore ornamentation patterns can be linked to all different taxa of the R. microsporus group, some previously incorrectly characterized as smooth. Ornamentation included valleys and ridges running in parallel, granular plateaus, or smooth polar areas. Distribution of ornamentation patterns was related to spore shape, which either was regular, ranging from globose to ellipsoidal, or irregular. Specific differences in spore shape, size, and ornamentation were observed between Rhizopus taxa, and sometimes between strains. (3) R. oligosporus has a defect in the spore formation process, which may be related to the domesticated nature of this taxon. It had a high proportion, 10–31 %, of large and irregular spores, and was significantly differentiated from other, natural Rhizopus taxa as evaluated with partial least squares discriminant analysis. It is remarkable that the vehicle of distribution, the sporangiospore, is affected in the strains that are distributed by human activity. This provides information about the specificity and speed of changes that occur in fungal strains because of their use in (food) industry.

In the polymorphic harvester ant Messor barbarus, the colony modulates response during foraging according to seed characteristics. The easiness of picking up small seeds (oat fragments or canaryseeds) shortens the time lapse between food discovery and the return of scouts to the nest, favouring the onset of recruitment and higher mobilisation rates than bigger seeds (whole oat). However, size is not the only criterion, as canaryseeds are preferred among small ones. A modulation of the trail laid by the first scouts also plays a role in the shaping of harvesting patterns and in the enhancement of recruitment towards small and/or preferred seed. This flexibility extends to the relative participation of the three worker sizes classes, which differs according to seed. Media are the most numerous at the foraging arena and largely responsible for trail-laying. Minor participate in seed harvesting and trail-laying, mostly when they can be efficient in carrying seeds, such as oat fragments. Major scarcely participate in harvesting and trail-laying, but are involved in the exploitation of bigger and/or preferred seed species. When faced with different seed species, M. barbarus seems thus to collectively adopt a “foraging time minimisation” rather than an “energetic gain per item harvested maximisation” strategy. Dynamics of foraging and division of labour between foragers of different sizes are related to both the workers’ ability to carry seed items, and the transfer of information to nestmates by trail-laying, all parameters that vary according to seed characteristics.

The pioneer tree Macaranga in SE Asia has developed manyfold associations with ants. The genus comprises all stages of interaction with ants, from facultative relationships to obligate myrmecophytes. Only myrmecophytic Macaranga offer nesting space for ants and are associated with a specific ant partner. The nonmyrmecophytic species are visited by a variety of different ant species which are attracted by extrafloral nectaries (EFN) and food bodies. Transitional Macaranga species like M. hosei are colonized later in their development due to their stem structure. Before the colonization by their specific Crematogaster partner the young plants are visited by different ant species attracted by EFN. These nectaries are reduced and food body production starts as soon as colonization becomes possible. We demonstrated earlier that obligate ant partners can protect their Macaranga plants against herbivore damage and vine cover. In this study we focused on nonspecific interactions and studied M. tanarius and M. hosei, representing a non-myrmecophyte and a transitional species respectively. In ant exclusion experiments both M. tanarius and M. hosei suffered significantly higher mean leaf damage than controls, 37% versus 6% in M. hosei, 16% versus 7% in M. tanarius. M. tanarius offers both EFN and food bodies so that tests for different effects of these two food rewards could be conducted. Plants with food bodies removed but with EFN remaining had the lowest mean increase of herbivore damage of all experimental groups. Main herbivores on M. hosei were mites and caterpillars. Many M. tanarius plants were infested by a shootborer. Both Macaranga species were visited by various ant species, Crematogaster spp. being the most abundant. We found no evidence for any specific relationships. The results of this study strongly support the hypothesis that non-specific, facultative associations with ants can be advantageous for Macaranga plants. Food bodies appear to have lower attractive value for opportunistic ants than EFN and may require a specific dietary adaptation. This is also indicated by the fact that food body production in the transitional M. hosei does not start before stem structure allows a colonization by the obligate Crematogaster species. M. hosei thus benefits from facultative association with a variety of ants until it produces its first domatia and can be colonized by its obligate mutualist.

Macaranga myrmecophytes (ant-plants) provide their partner symbiotic ants (plant-ants) with food bodies as their main food, and they are protected by the plant-ants from herbivores. The amount of resource allocated to food bodies determines the plant-ant colony size and consequently determines the intensity of ant defense (anti-herbivore defense by plant-ants). As constraints in resource allocation change as plants grow, the plant-ant colony size is hypothesized to change with the ontogenesis of Macaranga myrmecophyte. To determine the ontogenetic change in the relative size of the plant-ant colony, we measured the dry weights of the whole plant-ant colony and all of the aboveground parts of trees at various ontogenetic stages for a myrmecophytic species (Macaranga beccariana) in a Bornean lowland tropical rain forest. Ant biomass increased as plant biomass increased. However, the rate of increase gradually declined, and the ant biomass appeared to reach a ceiling once trees began to branch. The ant/plant biomass ratio consistently decreased as plant biomass increased, with the rate of decrease gradually accelerating. We infer that the ontogenetic reduction in ant/plant biomass ratio is caused by an ontogenetic change in resource allocation to food rewards for ants related to the physiological changes accompanying the beginning of branching.

While it is generally accepted that honeybees (Apis mellifera) are capable of using the pattern of polarized light in the sky to navigate to a food source, there is little or no direct behavioural evidence that they actually do so. We have examined whether bees can be trained to find their way through a maze composed of four interconnected tunnels, by using directional information provided by polarized light illumination from the ceilings of the tunnels. The results show that bees can learn this task, thus demonstrating directly, and for the first time, that bees are indeed capable of using the polarized-light information in the sky as a compass to steer their way to a food source.

1. The wavelength dependence of the fluorescence polarization (FP) ratio and dichroism has been studied with magneto-oriented (10–13 kG) whole cells of Chlorella pyrenoidosa, Scenedesmus obliquus, Euglena gracilis and spinach chloroplasts suspended in their aqueous growth media (or Tris-buffered sucrose solution in the case of the chloroplasts) under physiological conditions. The FP ratio is defined as the fluorescence intensity polarized parallel divided by the intensity polarized perpendicular to the membrane planes.

2. The FP ratio is typically in the range of 1.2–1.9 in Chlorella, 1.20–1.25 in Scenedesmus and 1.4–1.5 in spinach chloroplasts at fluorescence wavelengths above 690 nm. Below 690 nm the FP ratio decreases steadily with decreasing wavelength and may be as low as approx. 1.05 at 660 nm. These results are interpreted in terms of the orientation of the Qy transition moment vectors of the different spectroscopic forms of chlorophyll. For the chlorophyll a 680 form these vectors are inclined at angles of 30° or less (in Chlorella) with respect to the membrane planes, while the shorter wavelength chlorophyll a 670 forms appear to be not nearly as well oriented.

3. The Euglena fluorescence peak is red shifted to 714 nm (in the other algae and chloroplasts it is situated at 685 nm) and the FP ratio is approx. 1.20 in the 720–730 nm region and decreases with decreasing wavelength below 720 nm and is only 1.05 at 690 nm. This wavelength dependence is in good qualitative agreement with the fluorescence microscope studies of single chloroplasts of Euglena by Olson, R. A., Butler, W. H. and Jennings, W. H. ((1961) Biochim. Biophys. Acta, 54, 615–617).

4. By means of a model calculation it is shown that the high FP ratios observed with Chlorella are entirely consistent with the low values of the degree of polarization (0.01–0.06) determined by previous workers with unoriented cell suspensions.

5. The influence of reabsorption and the resulting distortion in the wavelength dependence of the FP ratio are described. The possibility that the fluorescence is polarized by scattering artifacts, rather than being a result of the intrinsic orientation of chlorophyll, is considered.

6. Linear dichroism studies with Chlorella and spinach chloroplasts confirm the orientation of the Qy transition moment vectors deduced from the FP ratio. Furthermore, it appears that the porphyrin rings are tilted out of the membrane plane and that the carotenoid molecules tend to lie with their long axes in the lamellar plane.

7. In Euglena, dichroism studies indicate that chlorophyll a 680 is unoriented, while chlorophyll a 695 appears to be oriented similar to chlorophyll a 680 in Chlorella or spinach chloroplasts, a result which is also in accord with the measured FP ratio of Euglena.

8. The possibility that the magnetic field gives rise to the reorientation of individual chlorophyll molecules is shown to be highly unlikely.
