Three intertidal sites dominated by Corallina turfs were investigated in Hokkaido, Japan. The sites (A, B and C) differed in slope, wave exposure and length of time exposed to air during tidal cycles. Monthly samples were analyzed for frond morphology and other features. Site A, the most wave-exposed site, was dominated by Corallina sp. X, an unknown species, and sites B and C by Corallina pilulifera Postels et Ruprecht. At the different sites the populations differed in conceptacle abundance, coverage by epiphytic Titanoderma corallinae (P. Crouan et H. Crouan) Woelkerling, Chamberlain et Silva, amount of contained sediment, numbers of axes per quadrat, numbers of branch fusions, branch entanglement, frond dryweight, frond length, amount of adventitious branching, numbers of epiphytes (exclusive of T. corallinae), and numbers of animal species. Ninety-one animal species were recorded from the turfs. Corallina is affected morphologically by conditions inherent in its microhabitat, including desiccation, epiphyte loading and the abundance of herbivores.  相似文献

Zygaena viciae, the New Forest burnet moth, has only one population in Britain, in western Scotland. Here it was discovered in1963 and its population sustained itself, before declining seriously from 1980 to 1990. A survey in 1990 discovered at most 20 adult moths and it was clear that the site had become seriously over-grazed. A fence was erected to exclude sheep, with variable success until 1996, since when it has remained effective. Vegetation speedily changed from 1990 onwards, including re-establishment and spread of the main larval foodplant, Lathyrus pratensis. The moth population remained low until 1997, since which time it has dramatically increased, reaching an estimated 8500–10,200 in 2003. However, with only one site the moth remains threatened and establishment on new sites is now a priority.  相似文献

Dipturus wuhanlingi, a new rajid species, is described from an immature male and female collected from the southern East China Sea and off Haimen, Shantou, in the South China Sea, respectively. The specimens conform to the genus Dipturus in having the combination of the following characters: a long rostral cartilage (length more than 60% of dorsal head length), greatly depressed and laterally expanded mesocondyle, and a total length greater than 55 cm when adult. Dipturus wuhanlingi is distinct from all other Dipturus species in the following combination of characters: a pair of scapular thorns, three or four nuchal thorns, an irregular row of lumbar thorns along the dorsal midline of the disc, a single row of tail thorns in both sexes, pores of ampullae of Lorenzini extending to just anterior to the pelvic girdle, anterior fenestra of scapulocoracoid strongly horizontally elliptical, mesocondyle located at about the middle between the procondyle and metacondyle, and three pairs of obturator foramina on the pelvic girdle.  相似文献

A panzootic in praying mantid species Tenodera sinensis and Statilia maculate, caused by Beauveria bassiana, occurred in north, southwest and southeast regions of Anhui Province, eastern China in Autumn, 2009. A 3-d principal component analysis (PCA) of 123 isolates from three sites revealed that the B. bassiana populations were heterogeneous with obvious dominance. Furthermore, the causal source of the panzootic in Anhui was shown to be polyphyletic. The populations were homogenized into homogenous subunits for investigation of genetic structure by inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers. Variance was greater than 70%, largely due to genetic differences within populations and subpopulations. Genetic distances and genetic differentiation were negatively associated with geographic distances and it was speculated that this was due to the effects of monsoons and topography. Mantid isolates were divided into five pathotypes based on a two-way cluster analysis of genetic distance. Pathotype I consisted of the predominant subpopulations of Huangcangyu and Chashui populations, with a genetic distance of 0.120 and gene flow up to 1.833. This pathotype caused a widespread epizootic in north and southwest Anhui, and Pathotype III caused enzootic at Site A in September and then epizootic in October, while the other three pathotypes caused enzootics at all three investigation sites. The widespread epizootics and isolated enzootics composed the polyphyletic panzootic in Anhui. A strong gene flow between isolates from the two mantid species was identified, resulting in negligible gene differentiation. This indicated a lack of host specificity in mantid isolates of B. bassiana.  相似文献

In black cotton uplands in East Africa, four symbiotic acacia-ant species compete for possession of a single swollen thorn tree species, Acacia drepanolobium, and yet coexist at fine spatial scales. Three of the four ant species produce independent foundress queens that establish colonies claustrally within swollen thorns, most often on small saplings. We conducted surveys of such saplings at two sites in 2001 and 2004, and examined foundresses and incipient colonies within their swollen thorns to determine what factors influence their success. Competition among foundresses for nest initiation sites was intense, with an average of over one founding attempt per swollen thorn in all samples, and with living and dead queens significantly hyper-dispersed among available thorns. Combat with other foundresses was the most common cause of death among claustral queens, especially for Tetraponera penzigi. In interspecific battles for nest initiation sites, T. penzigi was dominant over Crematogaster nigriceps and C. mimosae, and C. nigriceps won over 80% of its contests with C. mimosae foundresses. For singleton foundresses, brood parasitism by the braconid wasp Trigastrotheca laikipiensis typically results in the death of the entire ant brood. Host queens defend parasite larvae, pupae and eclosed adults, apparently unable to distinguish the wasps from legitimate offspring. Rates of brood parasitism were as high as 15–20% for incipient colonies of both Crematogaster species, but were extremely low for T. nigriceps in all samples. Although T. penzigi and C. nigriceps foundresses are always solitary, approximately 18% of claustral C. mimosae colonies contain cooperating pleometrotic queens. For unparasitized, claustral C. mimosae colonies, brood production per queen did not differ between solitary and cooperating foundresses. An impact assessment study was undertaken to determine seed predation rates by two bruchid beetles, Bruchidus sahlbergi Schilsky and Caryedon serratus Olivier, on the invasive shrub Acacia nilotica (L.) Willd. ex Del. The former bruchid was released as a biological control agent for A. nilotica, whereas the latter is naturalized in Australia. We attempted to determine the dynamics and magnitude of bruchid predation, following a number of differing reports of their effectiveness. To investigate the importance of seed availability on bruchid numbers, we compared seed death in high- and low-seed-density habitats, both before and after pods had dropped from tree branches. Bruchid predation was initially low (<2%) in pods on tree branches in both habitats, but increased abruptly to 12% in riparian and 32% in nonriparian exclosures by the third collection date. Bruchid numbers then crashed to below 2% in both habitats, when pods dropped to the ground. B. sahlbergi predation later increased markedly (up to 65%) again at high-pod-density sites. No further increase in predation took place beyond this level. Seed predation by C. serratus was found to be minimal (<5% of seeds infested) throughout the monitoring period. We suggest that seed predation by the bruchids, prior to pod drop and removal by cattle, is insufficient to cause major impacts on A. nilotica populations. Bruchid seed damage is likely to be significant only in situations with low cattle numbers, where cattle cannot remove the majority of fallen seed pods or where cattle are excluded. Exclusion of cattle from some areas within A. nilotica-invaded landscapes to potentially increase bruchid effectiveness is proposed. The demographic impact of optimal A. nilotica seed losses is discussed.  相似文献

Aims A molecular genetic distance study has been used in an initial survey to identify subspecies and genotypes of the weed Acacia nilotica in Australia, information needed to find suitable biocontrol agents. We use patterns of DNA sequence variation (in two DNA fragments) from each of the nine described subspecies of Acacia nilotica (L.) Delile (Leguminosae: Mimosoideae) that is to determine their genetic similarity, to verify if the Australian populations are A. nilotica ssp. indica (Benth.) Brenan, and to establish if any other subspecies are present in Australia. Location Australia and southern Africa through the Arabian peninsular to the Indo‐Pakistan subcontinent. Methods Representative specimens from the global distribution of the nine A. nilotica subspecies were sourced primarily from herbaria sheet specimens where available, and secondarily from field collections. These specimens together with related outgroups from Mimosoideae were genetically analysed using the DNA fragments trnL and internal transcribed spacer one (ITS1). We calculated a similarity index as set out in paup * using upgma (Unweighted Pair‐Group Method Arithmetic average) methods to cluster taxa to produce a genetic distance phenogram. Results Sequence results from ITS1 and trnL DNA fragments identified seven of the described subspecies of A. nilotica. Acacia nilotica ssp. cupressiformis (J. Stewart) Ali & Faruqi and A. nilotica ssp. adstringens (Schumach. & Thonn.) Roberty were not found to be genotypically distinct from A. nilotica ssp. indica and A. nilotica ssp. nilotica, respectively, based on the two DNA fragments. Subspecific ITS1 genotypes were geographically distributed similarly to previous reports that were based on morphology, with the exception that the hemispherica ITS1 genotype also occurred in Somalia. We confirmed that the Australian A. nilotica populations are mostly comprised of subspecies indica, but in addition, some individuals were found to be genetically identical to an unidentified Pakistan genotype not previously reported as occurring in Australia. Main conclusions Australian A. nilotica populations originated from India and Pakistan and we recommend further analysis to determine the complete genetic diversity profile and origins of the Australian populations. We highlight the importance of determining any hybridization between Australian populations of A. nilotica and native subgenus Acacia species. This study demonstrates the importance of genotyping weed species targeted for biocontrol and/or listed host specificity test species that may be easily misidentified. Biocontrol practitioners can justify genetic studies by considering the costs should a project fail through misidentification.  相似文献

Size measurements of the calcareous nannofossil taxon Discoaster multiradiatus were carried out across the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) in Ocean Drilling Program Holes 690B (Maud Rise, Weddell Sea) and 1209B (Shatsky Rise, Pacific Ocean). Morphometric investigations show that D. multiradiatus specimens are generally larger at ODP Site 1209 than at ODP Site 690. A limited increase in size of D. multiradiatus is recorded at ODP Site 1209, whereas significant enlargements characterize ODP Site 690. Preservation is comparable at both sites: nannofossils are moderately preserved with some evidence of etching/overgrowth in the PETM interval. Yet, D. multiradiatus variations do not correlate with preservation state and morphometric data most likely represent primary signals rather than diagenetic artifacts. There is a direct relationship between D. multiradiatus size and paleotemperatures: largest specimens are coeval with global warming associated with the PETM, inferred to result from excess atmospheric CO2 due to (partial) oxidation of massive quantities of methane. Size increases and largest specimens of D. multiradiatus occur at different stratigraphic levels within PETM at ODP Sites 690 and 1209. A marked shift in diameter size was observed at the onset and peak of the Carbon Isotopic Excursion (CIE) at ODP Site 690, but only at the end of CIE and initial recovery interval at ODP Site 1209. This diachroneity is puzzling, but indeed correlates well with reconstructed changes in surface and thermocline water masses temperature and salinity in the PETM interval at low and high latitudes. The presumed high concentrations of carbon dioxide seem to have not influenced the morphometry of D. multiradiatus. The major size increase of D. multiradiatus in the CIE of ODP Site 690 could represent the migration of larger-sized allochtonus specimens that moved from peri-equatorial/subtropical areas to higher latitudes during the warmest interval of the PETM, although no direct evidence of distinct populations/subpopulations has been obtained from the frequency diagrams. As a result, we infer that D. multiradiatus is a proxy of water masses stratification and might be used for deriving temperature–salinity–nutrient conditions in the mixed layer and thermocline and their dynamics.  相似文献

Nodulation potential, nitrogen fixation efficiency (nitrogenase activity) and biomass yield response of Leucaena leucocephala and Acacia nilotica to inoculation with 6 selected fast growing Rhizobium strains was explored in long-term (5 year) field trials. All the strains formed nodules and fixed nitrogen in L. leucocephala and A. nilotica. Seasonal effects on nitrogenase activity was observed and in winter (ambient temperature about 20 °C), nitrogenase activity could not be detected. However, with the onset of spring and a rise in temperature, fresh nodulation (renodulation) by all the inoculant rhizobial strains was observed in both the tree legumes. In L. leucocephala, maximum renodulation was exhibited by strain A1 while in A. nilotica, strain AB3 formed the maximum renodulation 24 months after transplantation. Dry matter yield of all the inoculated plants demonstrated a significant increase over that of the uninoculated plants at the end of five years after transplanting. In L. leucocephala, strain NGR8 gave the maximum response (45% more dry matter yield) in dry matter production while in A. nilotica, strain USDA 3325 showed a 25% increase in total dry matter yield five years after transplantation.  相似文献

Gortyna borelii lunata is a rare species of moth with a widespread, but localised distribution in Europe. In Britain, the moth is restricted to coastal grassland habitats that support its larval foodplant (Peucedanum officinale), in the southeast of England.Threats to G. borelii lunata in Britain include inappropriate management and sea-level rise. This study investigates how to secure the future of the moth in Britain by managing existing colonies appropriately and determining whether translocations of the species, away from the dangers of flooding, would be feasible. A mowing experiment and a translocation trial were conducted. Results from the mowing experiment indicate that cutting annually in either August or November is detrimental to the abundance of the moth. It is recommended that where sites must be mown this be performed on rotation, leaving much of the site uncut each year. The translocation of the moth and its foodplant to a site away from the threats of flooding was very successful, demonstrating that the species establishes well and can survive on higher ground. It is concluded that to secure the future of the moth in Britain, a sustainable network of interconnected sites for the species should be created. Also, an appropriate management plan should be formulated for each site.  相似文献

Nest architecture of a bagworm species,Clania crameri was examined. Fortytwo bags (nests) were collected from the host plant,Clerodendron indicum and number of sticks used in each bag was counted. Furthermore, length of each stick in each nest was measured (in mm) clockwise one after another serially beginning with the longest stick. The data obtained were subjected to frequency analysis and power spectrum analysis. Results clearly reveal that the larvae of bagworms do not glue together sticks of different size randomly but with a definite pattern.  相似文献

A tortricid moth larva in the genus Cydia bores into thorns of the endangered Japanese honey locust Gleditsia japonica. The larva may escape predation by using the thorns as protection. The duration of diapause in the stem borers Busseola fusca (Fuller) and Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) was studied in South Africa by collecting diapausing larvae from the field throughout winter (April–August). B. fusca larvae emerged as moth around the middle of October regardless of the date of collection and the length of time they were kept in the laboratory under constant 21 °C. C. partellus larvae collected in April–June emerged in November, those collected in July emerged in October, and those collected in August emerged in September. Regardless of the collection date C. partellus started to emerge from diapause earlier and moth emergence lasted up to twice as long as in B. fusca. Under laboratory conditions at 60% RH both borer larvae lost about 50% of their body mass during diapause. When provided with water B. fusca larvae lost about 30% of their body mass and adults emerged 20 days earlier than when kept dry. C. partellus, on the other hand, lost only 13% of their body weight and emerged 34 days earlier. The differences between the two species are discussed in light of different types of diapause; i.e., obligatory diapause in B. fusca and facultative diapause in C. partellus.  相似文献

The present investigation deals with the advantages and potential of the Acacia nilotica bark as an adsorbent of toxic metals. Bark (1 g) when added to 100 ml of aqueous solution containing 10 μg ml-1 metal solution exhibited different metal adsorption values for different metals. The order of metal adsorption being Cr ≥ Ni > Cu > Cd > As > Pb. A similar trend of metal adsorption was observed when the bark is reused (1st recycle) Cr> Ni > Cu > Cd > Pb and also in the column sorption. In order to verify the metal removal property of A. nilotica bark, toxicity bioassay with Salix viminalis stem cuttings in hydroponic system augmented with Cd, Cr, and Pb together with A. nilotica bark powder was carried out. The results of toxicity bioassay confirmed the metal adsorption property of the bark powder. The functions of toxicity studies include leaf area, root length and number of new root primordia produced per stump. The leaf area, root length, and the number of new root primordia increased considerably in the presence of A. nilotica bark. The order of metal toxicity for leaf area and new root primordial is Cd > Cr > Pb. However, for root length the order of metal toxicity is Cr > Cd > Pb. The metal budgets of the leaf and root confirmed that the bark powder had adsorbed substantial amount of toxic metals and thus alleviates the toxicity imposed by the various tested elements. Hence, the utility of A. nilotica bark in developing and designing innovative technology for the clean up of toxic elements in aqueous solutions and possible scope for its use in phytoremediation are discussed.  相似文献

Recent surveys have established that the belted beauty moth Lycia zonaria britannica, which is an endemic subspecies found only in the British Isles, now occurs at just three sites in England and Wales. Populations at all three sites are small, with annual peak counts of usually less than 50 females. At Morfa Conwy in Wales and Meols Common in England, habitat quality has been declining for more than a decade as open, herb-rich, early successional dune grassland is replaced by fixed, rank grassland. Uniquely at Sunderland Point in England, the moth is primarily associated with areas of saltmarsh, but distribution is constrained by surrounding farmland and man-made structures. Attempts are now being made to restore areas of open grassland and to return the moth to its former distribution. Since the winter of 2000-2001, small plots of rank grassland on Meols Common have been excavated annually, with all vegetation removed, together with any humic layer present. The exposed bare sand has then been allowed to re-vegetate naturally. Within 18 months, the plots have developed into open, herb-rich habitats suitable for the moth. Adults were recorded on the plots for the first time in spring 2003 and may have been the product of the small numbers of eggs and larvae introduced to the plots in spring 2002. Similar excavations have been initiated at Morfa Conwy, which is in the process of being notified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). A 3-year programme to establish a second Welsh population is underway and, to date, more than 2000 captive-reared larvae have been released on the receptor site which lies 21 km to the east of Morfa Conwy.  相似文献

The life cycle of the bruchid beetle Bruchidius uberatus in seeds of Acacia nilotica has been investigated under field and laboratory condition. In contrast to the multivoltine populations in the Sudan, in Botswana most beetles of B. uberatus are univoltine. They emerge from the seed and pod in early spring (October to November). Only a small part of the population, which emerge in late summer (February to March) is multivoltine, as confirmed by rearing experiments. The reproductive activity of females is not stimulated by pollen, as found in feeding experiments. Minimum life-span of adult beetles varies between 4 and 40 days, but it did not differ between univoltine and multivoltine beetles. Other data on life-history are 22 days for hatching of the fist-instar larva at a temperature regime of 20/15 °C (day/night) and 15 days at a temperature regime of 32/15 °C and 3 to 11 months for development from larvae to beetle.During dry storage of seeds B. uberatus can destroy the total amount of stored seeds within a few years. In stored seed pool, host-specificity of larva is low.The life cycles of the Botswana population have been discussed in relation to that of the species in the Sudan.
Zusammenfassung Der Lebenszyklus des Samenkäfers Bruchidius uberatus in Samen von Acacia nilotica wurde unter Feld- und Laborbedingungen untersucht. Im Gegensatz zu multivoltinen Populationen im Sudan (Peake, 1982) sind die Populationen von B. uberatus in Botswana vor allem univoltin. Adulte Käfer verlassen die Samen von A. nilotica während des Süd-Frühlings (Oktober/November). Im Spätsommer (Februar/März) geschlüpfte Käfer entstammen multivoltinen Genotypen, wie Züchtungsexperimente gezeigt haben. Die reproduktive Aktivität der Weibchen wird nicht durch die Zufuhr von Pollen oder Zucker stimuliert.Die Entwicklungsdauer vom Ei bis zum 1. Larvenstadium beträgt 15 Tage bis 52 und 3 bis 11 Monate bis zum adulten Käfer, deren Lebenserwartung unter Laboratoriumbedingungen 4 bis 40 Tage beträgt. Hierbei besteht kein Unterschied zwischen uni- und multivoltinen Käfern. Der lange Lebenszyklus in Botswana steht im Gegensatz zu dem 40-tägigen Lebenszyklus von B. uberatus im Sudan, der offensichtlich durch die Jahrhunderte andauernde Sammlung von Früchten verursacht ist.Samenvorräte, die zu Forstzwecken längere Zeit aufbewahrt werden, können innerhalb von 5 bis 8 Jahren völlig zerstört werden. Dabei ist die Wirtsspezifität gering. Die Infektion betrifft auch andere Acacia-Arten, z.B. A. burkei, A. erioloba, A. hebeclada, A. mellifera, A. robusta und A. tortilis. Durch die rasche Zerstörung der Embryoachse haben die Käfer keinen positiven Einfluss auf die Keimung dieser hartschaligen Acacia-Samen.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is widely practiced in commercial oil palm agriculture. This management system is intended to minimize the number of attacks by pest insects such as bagworms on crops, as well as curb economic loss with less dependency on chemical pesticides. One practice in IPM is the use of biological control agents such as predatory insects. In this study, we assessed the response of predatory natural enemies to pest outbreak and water stress, and document the habitat associations of potential pest predators. The abundances of 2 predatory insect species, namely Sycanus dichotomus and Cosmolestes picticeps (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), were compared bagworm outbreak sites and nonoutbreak sites within oil palm plantations. We also examined habitat characteristics that influence the abundances of both predatory species. We found that the abundance of C. picticeps was significantly higher in bagworm outbreak sites than in nonoutbreak sites. There were no significant differences in the abundance of S. dichotomus among outbreak and non‐outbreak sites. Both species responded negatively to water stress in oil palm plantations. Concerning the relationship between predatory insect abundance and in situ habitat quality characteristics, our models explained 46.36% of variation for C. picticeps and 23.17% of variation for S. dichotomus. Both species of predatory insects thrived from the planting of multiple beneficial plants in oil palm plantations. The results suggest that C. picticeps can be used as a biological agent to control bagworm populations in oil palm plantations, but S. dichotomus has no or little potential for such ecosystem service.  相似文献

Browse plants play an important role in providing feed for livestock in semi-arid rangelands of Africa. Chemical composition and in vitro ruminal fermentation of leaves collected from Acacia burkei, Acacia tortilis, Acacia nilotica, Dichrostachys cinerea and Ehretia obtusifolia in communal grazing lands in the lowveld of Swaziland is presented. Leaves were collected from trees located on two soil types (i.e., lithosol and vertisol) in the communal land but it had no effect on the chemical composition of tree leaves. The NDFom and ADFom content were highest in D. cinerea and A. burkei and lowest in E. obtusifolia and A. nilotica. Crude protein (CP) contents ranged between 108 g/kg and 122 g/kg DM. D. cinerea had the highest Ca and Mg content, while A. tortilis had the lowest. There were marked variations in K level amongst browse species, with A. tortilis (9.1 g/kg DM) having the highest value. The P, Zn and Fe did not differ between browse species. Soil type and tree species interaction impacted in vitro fermentation parameters. Extent of fermentation, as measured by 48 h cumulative gas production, and organic matter degradability was highest in E. obtusifolia leaves and lowest in D. cinerea leaves within soil type. Fermentation efficiency, as measured by partitioning factors, was highest in A. nilotica leaves. Leaves of E. obtusifolia could be a valuable supplementary feedstuff for ruminant livestock due to its in vitro fermentation characteristics as well as low fibre and moderate CP levels.  相似文献

Gonadally undifferentiated Tilapia nilotica fry were fed with methyl testosterone at the dosage of 50 mg/kg of dry diet. The fry used in the investigation belonged to two age groups with a mean total length of 10 mm and 13.5 mm. Treatment lasted for a minimum of four weeks and a maximum of six weeks. 100% males were obtained in all the various groups under androgen treatment.  相似文献
