The effects of single or combined stress of aluminum (Al) and chromium (Cr) on plant growth, root dehydrogenase, oxidative stress and antioxidative enzymes were studied using two barley genotypes differing in Al tolerance in a hydroponic experiment. Al or Cr stress decreased plant growth, lowered root dehydrogenase activity and caused oxidative damage, as characterized by increased MDA and H2O2 contents. Under Al or Cr stress, the activities of antioxidative enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione reductase (GR) and catalase (CAT), were dramatically increased in plant tissues. Gebeina, an Al-tolerant genotype, had less oxidative damage than Shang 70-119, an Al-sensitive genotype. The extent of oxidative damage induced by Cr varied with the pH of the culture solution, with lower pH values (4.0) being more severe than higher pH values (6.5). The combination of Cr and Al caused a further decrease in plant growth, a decrease in root dehydrogenase activity and an increase in MDA and H2O2 contents as well as the activities of antioxidative enzymes. There was also a marked difference between the two barley genotypes in the extent of increased antioxidative enzyme activity under the Cr and Al stresses.  相似文献

We investigated the role of selenium (Se) against aluminium (Al) stress in ryegrass by evaluating the growth responses and the antioxidant properties of plants cultured hydroponically with Al (0 or 0.2 mM) and selenite (0–10 µM Se). Al addition significantly reduced the yield and length of shoots and roots, and most Al was accumulated in the roots. Al also enhanced lipid peroxidation and activated the peroxidase (POD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzymes in the roots. Se application up to 2 µM improved root growth and steadily decreased thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) accumulation in plants treated with 0 and 0.2 mM Al. However, above 2 µM, Se induced stress in plants grown with or without Al. Significant changes in antioxidant enzymes activities were also found as a result of the added Se. At low Se addition levels POD was activated, whereas APX activity decreased irrespective of added Al. Furthermore, Se supplied up to 2 µM greatly decreased root SOD activity in Al-stressed plants. Our study provides evidence that Se alleviated the Al-induced oxidative stress in ryegrass roots through the enhancement of the spontaneous dismutation of superoxide radicals and the subsequent activation of POD enzyme.  相似文献

The changes in cell-wall peroxidase (POD) activity and H2O2 level in roots of NaCl-stressed rice seedlings and their correlation with root growth were investigated. Increasing concentrations of NaCl from 50 to 150 mM progressively reduced root growth and increased ionically bound cell-wall POD activity. NaCl had no effect on covalently bound cell-wall POD activities. The reduction of root growth by NaCl is closely correlated with the increase in H2O2 level. Exogenous H2O2 was found to inhibit root growth of rice seedlings. Since ammonium and proline accumulation are associated with root growth inhibition caused by NaCl, we determined the effects of NH4Cl or proline on root growth, cell-wall POD activity and H2O2level in roots. External application of NH4Cl or proline markedly inhibited root growth, increased cell-wall POD activity and increased H2O2 level in roots of rice seedlings in the absence of NaCl. An increase in cell-wall POD activity and H2O2 level preceded inhibition of root growth caused by NaCl, NH4Cl or proline. NaCl or proline treatment also increased NADH-POD and diamine oxidase (DAO) activities in roots of rice seedlings, suggesting that NADH-POD and DAO contribute to the H2O2 generation in the cell wall of NaCl- or proline-treated roots. NH4Cl treatment increased NADH-POD activity but had no effect on DAO activity, suggesting that NADH-POD but not DAO is responsible for H2O2 generation in cell wall of NH4Cl-treated roots.  相似文献

Seedlings of two cultivars of maize (Zea mays L.) differing in their drought sensitivity were exposed to osmotic stress (0.3 M sorbitol, −1.4 MPa) for 4, 8, 12, 24 and 48 h during their heterotrophic stage of development. Alterations in their antioxidant pools combined with the activities of enzymes involved in defence against oxidative stress were investigated. Significant activation of antioxidative defence mechanisms correlated with drought-induced oxidative stress tolerance, and this phenomenon was shown to be characteristic of the drought-tolerant cv. Nova. Activities of some ROS-scavenging enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD), guaiacol peroxidase (POX), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) were already enhanced significantly 4 h after the start of drought exposure in the drought-tolerant cv. Nova. Furthermore, a significant increase in the ascorbate pool was observed in this cultivar. On the other hand, in the drought-sensitive cv. Ankora only SOD and POD activities and the thiol pool were increased. No changes in APX activity or the level of ascorbate were recorded in cv. Ankora. Studies of root cell viability indicated that marked oxidative damage appeared only in cv. Ankora. These results, together with our previous observations, confirmed the higher ability of cv. Nova to tolerate drought stress and cope effectively with oxidative damage.  相似文献

The combined effects of drought and low light on biomass partition, foliar nitrogen concentration, membrane stability and active oxygen species (AOS) and antioxidant system were investigated in dragon spruce (Picea asperata Mast.) seedlings grown at two watering regimes (well-watered, 100% of field capacity and drought, 30% of field capacity) and light availabilities (HL, 100% of full sunlight and low light, 15% of full sunlight). Under high light condition drought not only reduced foliar nitrogen concentration (Nmass) and membrane stability index (MSI) but also significantly increased biomass partitioning to roots, AOS, ascorbic acid (AsA) content and antioxidant enzyme activities including superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC 1.15.1.1), peroxidase (POD, EC 1.11.1.7), catalase (CAT, EC 1.11.1.6), ascorbate peroxidase (APX, EC 1.11.1.11) and glutathione reductase(GR, EC 1.6.4.2). However, no prominently drought-induced differences in biomass partitioning to root, SOD, GR activities, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and MSI were observed in low light seedlings. On the other hand, significant interaction of drought and low light was found on MSI, the antioxidant enzymes activities (SOD, POD, CAT, APX, GR), H2O2 and superoxide radical (O2 ). These results suggested that seedlings grown at the understory were more sensitive to drought than low light.  相似文献

Salt damage to plants has been attributed to a combination of several factors including mainly osmotic stress and the accumulation of toxic ions. Recent findings in our laboratory showed that phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase (PHGPX), an enzyme active in the cellular antioxidant system, was induced by salt in citrus cells and mainly in roots of plants. Following this observation we studied the two most important enzymes active in elimination of reactive oxygen species, namely, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), to determine whether a general oxidative stress is induced by salt. While Cu/Zn-SOD activity and cytosolic APX protein level were similarly induced by salt and methyl viologen, the response of PHGPX and other APX isozymes was either specific to salt or methyl viologen, respectively. Unlike PHGPX, cytosolic APX and Cu/Zn-SOD were not induced by exogenously added abscisic acid. Salt induced a significant increase in SOD activity which was not matched by the subsequent enzyme APX. We suggest that the excess of H2O2 interacts with lipids to form hydroperoxides which in turn induce and are removed by PHGPX. Ascorbate peroxidase seems to be a key enzyme in determining salt tolerance in citrus as its constitutive activity in salt-sensitive callus is far below the activity observed in salt-tolerant callus, while the activities of other enzymes involved in the defence against oxidative stress, namely SOD, glutathione reductase and PHGPX, are essentially similar. The present study investigated the effects of aluminum on lipid peroxidation, accumulation of reactive oxygen species and antioxidative defense systems in root tips of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seedlings. Exposure to 30 μM Al increased contents of malondialdehyde, H2O2, suproxide radical and Evans blue uptake in both genotypes, with increases being greater in Al-sensitive genotype Yangmai-5 than in Al-tolerant genotype Jian-864. In addition, Al treatment increased the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX), as well as the contents of ascorbate (AsA) and glutathione (GSH) in both genotypes. The increased activities SOD and POD were greater in Yangmai-5 than in Jian-864, whereas the opposite was true for the activities of CAT, APX, MDHAR, GR and GPX and the contents of AsA and GSH. Consequently, the antioxidant capacity in terms of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)-radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) was greater in Jian-864 than in Yangmai-5.  相似文献

The localization of antioxidant enzymes between the mesophyll and bundle sheath cells were determined in sorghum (Sorghum vulgare L.) leaves. The activity of antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), guaiacol peroxidase (POD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutathione reductase (GR) were assayed in whole leaf, mesophyll and bundle sheath fractions of sorghum leaves subjected to water-limited conditions. Drought was imposed by withholding water and the plants were maintained at different water potentials ranging from 0.5–2.0 MPa. The purity of the isolates was tested using the marker enzymes like RuBPcase and PEPcase. GR was mostly localized in mesophyll fraction, while SOD, APX and peroxidase were located in bundle sheath cells. Catalase was found to be equally distributed between the two cell types. Under water stress conditions, most of the SOD activity was found in the bundle sheath tissues. Little or no activity of the enzymes CAT, APX or POD was found in the mesophyll extracts when exposed to water stress. GR activity increased when exposed to low water regimes. From this study, it is clear that antioxidants are differentially distributed between the mesophyll and bundle sheath cells in sorghum leaves. Under water stress conditions, the mesophyll cells showed less damage from oxidative stress when compared to the bundle sheath cells. This is critical for determining the sensitivity of sorghum to extreme climatic conditions.  相似文献

The mechanisms of plant tolerance to cadmium stress were studied by short-term exposure of Potamogeton crispus L. to various concentrations of Cd ranging from 0 to 0.09 mM. The accumulation of Cd and its influence on nutrient elements, chlorophyll pigments, ultrastructure, proline and MDA contents, and free radical production, as well as the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and glutathione reductase (GR) were investigated. The higher Cd concentration in the medium resulted in a significant enhancement of Cd accumulation. Photosynthetic pigment content decreased and ultrastructural damage to the leaf cells was aggravated with the increase in the Cd concentrations. Disruption of chloroplasts and mitochondria was observed even at the lowest concentration of Cd. Meantime, the rate of O2*− generation and the contents of H2O2 and MDA significantly increased under Cd stress, suggesting that Cd caused oxidative stress. In addition, the antioxidant system was clearly activated following Cd exposure. SOD and POD activities increased initially and then decreased, while APX and GR activities markedly increased. Simultaneously, mineral nutrition was disturbed. While K, P, Ca, and Cu contents decreased, Na, Fe, and Mn contents increased. Induction of antioxidant enzyme activities in leaves exposed to elevated Cd concentrations may be involved in Cd tolerance of P. crispus.  相似文献

Oxidative stress is one aspect of metal toxicity. Zinc, although unable to perform univalent oxido‐reduction reactions, can induce the oxidative damage of cellular components and alter antioxidative systems. Verbascum thapsus L. plants that were grown hydroponically were exposed to 1 and 5 mM Zn2+. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation was demonstrated by the fluorescent probe H2DCFDA and EPR measurements. The extent of zinc‐induced oxidative damage was assessed by measuring the level of protein carbonylation. Activities and isoform profiles of some antioxidant enzymes and the changes in ascorbate and total phenolic contents of leaves and roots were determined. Stunted growth because of zinc accumulation, preferentially in the roots, was accompanied by H2O2 production in the leaf and root apoplasts. Increased EPR signals of the endogenous oxidant quinhydrone, ?CH3 and ?OH, were found in the cell walls of zinc‐treated plants. The activities of the antioxidative enzymes ascorbate peroxidase (APX) (EC 1.11.1.11), soluble superoxide dismutase (SOD) (EC 1.15.1.1), peroxidase (POD), (EC 1.11.1.7) and monodehydroascorbate reductase (EC 1.6.5.4) were increased; those of glutathione reductase (EC 1.6.4.2), dehydroascorbate reductase (EC 1.8.5.1) and ascorbate oxidase (AAO) (EC 1.10.3.3) were decreased with zinc treatment. Zinc induced a cell‐wall‐bound SOD isoform in both organs. Leaves accumulated more ascorbate and phenolics in comparison to roots. We propose a mechanism for zinc‐promoted oxidative stress in V. thapsus L. through the generation of charge transfer complexes and quinhydrone because of phenoxyl radical stabilisation by Zn2+ in the cell wall. Our results suggest that the SOD and APX responses are mediated by ROS accumulation in the apoplast. The importance of the POD/Phe/AA (ascorbic acid) scavenging system in the apoplast is also discussed.  相似文献

The effect of NaCl on antioxidant enzyme activities in potato seedlings   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
The effect of NaCl on the growth and activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) were investigated in the seedlings of four potato cultivars (Agria, Kennebec; relatively salt tolerant, Diamant and Ajax; relatively salt sensitive). The shoot fresh mass of Agria and Kennebec did not changed at 50 mM NaCl, whereas in Diamant and Ajax it decreased to 50 % of that in the controls. In Agria and Kennebec, SOD activity increased at 50 mM NaCl, but no significant changes observed in Diamant and Ajax. At higher NaCl concentration, SOD activity reduced in all cultivars. CAT and POD activities increased in all cultivars under salt stress. Unlike the other cultivars, in Ajax seedlings, APX activity increased in response to NaCl stress. We also observed new POD and SOD isoenzyme activities and changes in isoenzyme compositions under salt stress. These results suggest that salt-tolerant potato cultivars may have a better protection against reactive oxygen species (ROS) by increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes (especially SOD) under salt stress.  相似文献

Pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.] is a waterlogging-sensitive legume crop. We studied the effect of waterlogging stress on hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzyme activities in two pigeonpea genotypes viz., ICPL-84023 (waterlogging resistant) and MAL-18 (waterlogging susceptible). In a pot experiment, waterlogging stress was imposed for 6 days at early vegetative stage (20 days after sowing). Waterlogging treatment significantly increased hydrogen peroxide accumulation and lipid peroxidation, which indicated the extent of oxidative injury posed by stress conditions. Enzyme activities of peroxidase (POX), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) increased in pigeonpea roots as a consequence of waterlogged conditions, and all the enzyme activities were significantly higher in waterlogged ICPL-84023 than in MAL-18. POX activity was the maximum immediately after imposing stress, therefore, it was suggested to be involved in early scavenging of H2O2, while rest of the enzymes (CAT, APX, SOD and PPO) were more important in late responses to waterlogging. Present study revealed that H2O2 content is directly related to lipid peroxidation leading to oxidative damage during waterlogging in pigeonpea. Higher antioxidant potential in ICPL-84023 as evidenced by enhanced POX, CAT, APX, SOD and PPO activities increased capacity for reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging and indicated relationship between waterlogging resistance and antioxidant defense system in pigeonpea.  相似文献

The effect of salinity on the antioxidative system of root mitochondria and peroxisomes of a cultivated tomato Lycopersicon esculentum (Lem) and its wild salt-tolerant related species L. pennellii (Lpa) was studied. Salt stress induced oxidative stress in Lem mitochondria, as indicated by the increased levels of lipid peroxidation and H(2)O(2). These changes were associated with decreased activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and guaiacol peroxidases (POD) and contents of ascorbate (ASC) and glutathione (GSH). By contrast, in mitochondria of salt-treated Lpa plants both H(2)O(2) and lipid peroxidation levels decreased while the levels of ASC and GSH and activities of SOD, several isoforms of ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and POD increased. Similarly to mitochondria, peroxisomes isolated from roots of salt-treated Lpa plants exhibited also decreased levels of lipid peroxidation and H(2)O(2) and increased SOD, ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and catalase (CAT) activities. In spite of the fact that salt stress decreased activities of antioxidant enzymes in Lem peroxisome, oxidative stress was not evident in these organelles.  相似文献

Effects of NaCl and Mycorrhizal Fungi on Antioxidative Enzymes in Soybean   总被引:12,自引:3,他引:9  
The effects of different concentrations of NaCl on the activities of antioxidative enzymes in the shoots and roots of soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr cv. Pershing) inoculated or not with an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus, Glomus etunicatum Becker & Gerdemann, were studied. Furthermore, the effect of salt acclimated mycorrhizal fungi on the antioxidative enzymes in soybean plants grown under salt stress (100 mM NaCl) was investigated. Activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) were increased in the shoots of both mycorrhizal (M) and nonmycorrhizal (NM) plants grown under NaCl salinity. Salinity increased SOD activity in the roots of M and NM plants, but had no effect on CAT and polyphenol oxidase activities in the roots. M plants had greater SOD, POD and ascorbate peroxidase activity under salinity. Under salt stress, soybean plants inoculated with salt pre-treated mycorrhizal fungi showed increased SOD and POD activity in shoots, relative to those inoculated with the non pre-treated fungi.  相似文献

The different physiological responses to heat stress in calli from two ecotypes of common reed (Phragmites communis Trin.) plants (dune reed (DR) and swamp reed (SR)) were studied. The relative water content, the relative growth rate, cell viability, membrane permeability (MP), H2O2 content, MDA content, proline level, and the activities of enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione reductase (GR), and lipoxygenase (LOX) were assayed. Results showed that under heat stress, DR callus could maintain the higher relative growth rate and cell viability than SR callus, while H2O2 content, MDA content, and MP in SR callus increased more than in DR callus. The activities of antioxidant enzymes, such as SOD, CAT, POD, APX, and GR in two calli were enhanced by high temperature. However, antioxidant enzymes in DR callus showed the higher thermal stability than those in SR callus. LOX activity increased more in SR callus than in DR callus under heat stress. High temperature markedly elevated proline content in DR callus whereas had no effect on that in SR callus. Taken together, DR callus is more thermotolerant than SR callus, which might be due to the higher activity of antioxidant enzymes and proline level compared with SR callus under heat stress.  相似文献

We studied the effects of different concentrations of mercury (0.0 to 100 μM) on growth and photosynthetic efficiency in rice plants treated for 21 d. In addition, we investigated how this metal affected the malondialdehyde (MDA) content as well as the activity of five antioxidant enzymes — superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione reductase (GR), guaiacol peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT). Photosynthetic efficiency (Fμ/Fm) and seedling growth decreased as the concentration of Hg was increased in the growth media. Plants also responded to Hg-induced oxidative stress by changing the levels of their antioxidative enzymes. Enhanced lipid peroxidation was observed in both leaves and roots that had been exposed to oxidative stress, with leaves showing higher enzymatic activity. Both SOD and APX activities increased in treatments with up to 50 μM Hg, then decreased at higher concentrations. In the leaves, both CAT and POD activities increased gradually, with CAT levels decreasing at higher concentrations. In the roots, however, CAT activity remained unchanged while that of POD increased a bit more than did the control for concentrations of up to 10 μM Hg. At higher Hg levels, both CAT and POD activities decreased. GR activity increased in leaves exposed to no more than 0.25 μM Hg, then decreased gradually. In contrast, its activity was greatly inhibited in the roots. Based on these results, we suggest that when rice plants are exposed to different concentrations of mercury, their antioxidative enzymes become involved in defense mechanisms against the free radicals that are induced by this stress.  相似文献

Root plastids of the cultivated tomato Lycopersicon esculentum (Lem) exhibited salt-induced oxidative stress as indicated by the increased H 2 O 2 and lipid peroxidation levels which were accompanied with increased contents of the oxidized forms of ascorbate and glutathione. In contrast, H 2 O 2 level decreased, lipid peroxidation level slightly decreased and the levels of the reduced forms of ascorbate and glutathione increased in plastids of L. pennellii (Lpa) species in response to salinity. This better protection of Lpa root plastids from salt-induced oxidative stress was correlated with increased activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), guaiacol peroxidases (POD), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione- S -transferase (GST) and phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase (PHGPX). In the plastids of both species, activities of SOD, APX, and POD could be resolved into several isozymes. In Lem plastids two Cu/ZnSOD isozymes were found whereas in Lpa an additional FeSOD type could also be detected. In response to salinity, activities of selected SOD, APX, and POD isozymes were increased in Lpa, while in Lem plastids the activities of most of SOD and POD isozymes decreased. Taken together, it is suggested that plastids play an important role in the adaptation of Lpa roots to salinity.  相似文献

In this study, we examined the modulation of Cu toxicity-induced oxidative stress by excess supply of iron in Zea mays L. plants. Plants receiving excess of Cu (100 μM) showed decreased water potential and simultaneously showed wilting in the leaves. Later, the young leaves exhibited chlorosis and necrotic scorching of lamina. Excess of Cu suppressed growth, decreased concentration of chloroplastic pigments and fresh and dry weight of plants. The activities of peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.7; POD), ascorbate peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.11; APX) and superoxide dismutase (EC 1.15.1.1; SOD) were increased in plants supplied excess of Cu. However, activity of catalase (EC 1.11.1.6; CAT), was depressed in these plants. In gel activities of isoforms of POD, APX and SOD also revealed upregulation of these enzymes. Excess (500 μM)-Fe-supplemented Cu-stressed plants, however, looked better in their phenotypic appearance, had increased concentration of chloroplastic pigments, dry weight, and improved leaf tissue water status in comparison to the plants supplied excess of Cu. Moreover, activities of antioxidant enzymes including CAT were further enhanced and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) and H2O2 concentrations decreased in excess-Fe-supplemented Cu-stressed plants. In situ accumulation of H2O2, contrary to that of O2 ·− radical, increased in both leaf and roots of excess-Cu-stressed plants, but Cu-excess plants supplied with excess-Fe showed reduced accumulation H2O2 and little higher of O2 ·− in comparison to excess-Cu plants. It is, therefore, concluded that excess-Cu (100 μM) induces oxidative stress by increasing production of H2O2 despite of increased antioxidant protection and that the excess-Cu-induced oxidative damage is minimized by excess supply of Fe.  相似文献

Summary The activity of antioxidative enzymes after inoculation of pepper (Capsicum annuum L. Chungok) with a pathogen, Phytophthora capsici (P), the causal agent of Phytophtora blight and dual inoculation of pathogen and an antagonist, Paenibacillus illinoisensis KJA-424 (P+A), were measured and compared with that of non-inoculated (C) roots. Root mortality was significantly reduced by about 84% in P+A treatment compared with P treatment alone. When compared to the non-inoculated (C) roots, malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration gradually decreased by 52.4% in 7 days only in P-treated roots and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was not significantly affected by the treatment for 5 days but significantly decreased in the P+A-treated roots at day 7. P-treatment continuously induced peroxidase (POD) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), resulting in significant increases of 36.7% and 27.7% at day 7, respectively, compared to the control. In P+A-treated roots, the activities of POD and SOD also increased for 5 days but returned to the control level at day 7. Catalase activity fluctuated but again increased over the 7-day period following P+A inoculation. These results indicate that an antagonist P. illinoisensis KJA-424 alleviated root mortality and suppressed the elevated activities of POD and SOD in the root of pepper plant root caused by P.␣capsici infection.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to test the protective roles of superoxide dismutases (SODs), guaiacol peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and glutathione reductase (GR) against oxidative damage and their activities in different phases of the dry down process in Reaumuria soongorica (Pall.) Maxim. leaves. Drought stress was imposed during 100 consecutive days and rewatering after 16, 72, and 100 days. The concentration of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), malondialdehyde, and SODs activities were elevated significantly with progressing drought stress. POD and CAT activities increased markedly in the early phase of drought and decreased significantly with further drought stress continuation, and POD activity was unable to recover after rewatering. Ascorbate, reduced glutathione, APX, and GR activities declined in the initial stages of drought process, elevated significantly with further increasing water deficit progression and recovered after rewatering. These results indicate that: (1) iron SODs-removing superoxide anion is very effective during the whole drought stress; (2) CAT scavenges H2O2 in the early phase of drought and enzymes of ascorbate–glutathione cycle scavenge H2O2 in further increasing drought stress; and (3) POD does not contribute to protect against oxidative damage caused by H2O2 under drought stress.  相似文献
