For the 1909 Darwin Centennial, the New York Academy of Sciences gave a large bronze bust of Charles Darwin to the American Museum of Natural History. Created by the well-known sculptor, William Couper, the bust was placed on its tall granite pedestal at the entrance at the newly designated exhibition hall, the Charles Darwin Hall of Invertebrate Zoology. Later that year, the American Museum ordered a bronze copy of the bust and presented it to Christ’s College, in Cambridge, England at the British Darwinian celebration. In 1935, Victor Von Hagen requested a plaster copy of the bust for a monument he was erecting on San Cristóbal in the Galapagos Islands to celebrate Darwin’s arrival in the Galapagos. During 1960, the American Museum of Natural History returned the original bronze bust to the New York Academy of Science, where it is now on display at its headquarters in New York City. To celebrate the Darwin bicentennial, the National Academy of Sciences recreated the bust in a computer-generated copy for display at their Washington, DC headquarters.

Two exhibits, the Margaret Mead Hall of Pacific Peoples at the American Museum of Natural History (1971) and Traveling the Pacific at the Field Museum of Natural History (1989), are compared. Foucault's concept of heterotopia is used to examine why, in spite of major recent changes in museum philosophy and technology, the subtexts of the two exhibits remain remarkably similar. Both confuse spatial distance with temporal flow, creating an incoherent framework of disjunctive orders.

Bird specimens collected by 19th century explorer and ornithologist Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied form one of the foundation collections of the American Museum of Natural History in New York. However, parts of his collection remained in Germany and came to the Museum Wiesbaden. Since Wied described numerous new species without designating types, some of these specimens might be type material. Here we present a catalog of the 30 Wiesbaden specimens associated with him and discuss their potential type status. We conclude that 17 individuals in 11 species are potential type specimens that should be considered in future taxonomic work.

Two hundred years after his birth, Darwin, originated by the American Museum of Natural History in New York, is the most important exhibition about the English scientist ever organized for the general public. This traveling exhibition has appeared in many versions worldwide, and a study of the relationships between local developers of the various editions of the exhibition underlines how a scientific exhibition and, more generally, science communication can succeed in striking a good equilibrium between universal content and cultural determinants.

In 1926 George Tate participated in a collecting expedition to the Cordillera Real of Bolivia and Peru under the auspices of H. S. Ladew and The American Museum of Natural History. Although the emphasis of the expedition was zoological, Tate managed to collect 1215 plant numbers from which over 50 new species were later described, primarily by H. H. Rusby. These specimens, including most types, were deposited at The New York Botanical Garden. Tate retained 632 duplicate sheets at the Museum to form the core of the “Ecological Herbarium of Dept. of Mammals.” The 24 collecting stations worked by Tate in Bolivia are described and mapped from data obtained from a transcribed copy of Tate’s field notes deposited in the archives of The New York Botanical Garden.

The history of the Piltdown hoax and its importance in convincing the world of Darwin's theory is reviewed. Compelling evidence existed from the beginning that the find was a hoax or, at the very least, was not evidence for human evolution. Yet for decades, Piltdown was touted by textbooks, articles, and major museums (including the American Museum of Natural History in New York) as major evidence of human evolution. The hoax is an excellent illustration of the difficulties in drawing conclusions about evolution from fossils. The hoax convinced many people of the validity of Darwinism, but its final, definitive exposure did little to alter the basic views of most Darwinists.

Holmquist, Ch. and Karling, T. G. (Section of Invertebrate Zoology, Swedish Museum of Natural History, Stockholm, Sweden.) Two new species of marine triclads from the North American Pacific coast, with comments on evolutionary trends and systematics in Tricladida (Turbellaria). Zool. Scripta 1(3–4): 175–184, 1972.–Two marine triclads, Oregoniplana opisthopora gen. et sp.n. and Pacificides psammophilus gen. et sp.n. are described from the Pacific coast of USA. They are inhabitants of sand in the surf zone. They are provisionally included in the family Procerodidae but their anatomy is aberrant in several respects; they elucidate some evolutionary trends as well as some unsatisfactory points in the systematics of the aquatic triclads.
