Waste gas containing diethyldisulphide (DEDS) is generated from various industries including pulp and paper, refinery, rayon and molasses based distilleries, etc. DEDS has odour threshold detection with an average concentration of 10(-9)mg/m(3) at 25 degrees C. DEDS is toxic to bacteria, fungus and also to mammals when exposed for a long period. Waste gas containing DEDS require proper treatment prior to discharge into the environment. DEDS containing waste gas was treated in a biofilter, packed with compost along with wooden chips and enriched with DEDS degrading microorganisms. The biofilter could remove DEDS to the extent of 94+/-5% at a loading of 1.60 g/m(3)/h with an empty bed retention time of 150s. At optimal operating conditions, the average moisture content required by the biofilter was in the range of 60-65%. The biodegradative products of DEDS were thiosulphate and sulphate.  相似文献

In recent years, biofiltration has been increasingly applied as an air pollution control technology to minimize or eliminate emissions of volatile organic compounds from industrial sources and environmental remediation activities. Although the ability of this technology to maintain high removal efficiency during relatively steady loading conditions has been well established for many waste streams, relatively little research has focused on development of operating strategies that could improve treatment performance during transient loading conditions typical of industrial operations. In the research described herein, two operating strategies were evaluated over a period of 295 days in biofilters treating a model waste gas stream containing a two-component mixture of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and toluene. One biofilter was operated as a sequencing batch biofilter (SBB), and the other was operated as a conventional continuous-flow biofilter (CFB). During "normal" steady loading conditions, the model waste stream contained MEK concentrations ranging from 80 to 89 ppmv and toluene concentrations ranging from 28 to 30 ppmv. Both biofilter operating strategies resulted in stable long-term performance with greater than 99% contaminant removal during these normal loading conditions. On a regular basis, the influent MEK and toluene concentrations were temporarily increased to five times the normal influent concentration for the duration of 1 h to test performance during transient "shock loading" conditions. Biofilter performance during the model shock loading conditions demonstrate that SBB operating strategies can result in superior treatment in two important areas: (1) overall mass of contaminants removed and (2) minimum instantaneous removal efficiency.  相似文献

Over the past decade much effort has been made to develop new carrier materials, more performant biocatalysts, and new types of bioreactors for waste gas treatment. In biofilters fungal biocatalysts are more resistant to acid and dry conditions and take up hydrophobic compounds from the gas phase more easily than wet bacterial biofilms. In the present study, a biofilter packed with a mixture of perlite and Pall rings and fed alpha-pinene-polluted air was inoculated with a new fungal isolate identified as Ophiostoma species. alpha-Pinene is a volatile pollutant typically found in waste gases from wood-related industries. The temperature of waste gas streams from pulp and paper industries containing alpha-pinene is usually higher than ambient temperature. Studies were undertaken here on the effect on performance of temperature changes in the range of 15-40 degrees C. The effect of temperature on biodegradation kinetics in continuous reactors was elucidated through equations derived from the Arrhenius formula. Moreover, the effects of the relative humidity (RH) of the inlet gas phase, transient loads (shock or starvation), and the nature of the nitrogen source on alpha-pinene removal were also studied in this research. The results suggest that the fungal biofilter appears to be an effective treatment process for the removal of alpha-pinene. The optimal conditions are: temperature around 30 degrees C, RH of the inlet waste gas stream around 85%, and nitrate as nitrogen source. The fungal biofilter also showed a good potential to withstand shock loads and recovered rapidly its full performance after a 3-7 days starvation period.  相似文献

Effect of Antimicrobial Agents on Livestock Waste Emissions   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Various antimicrobial agents were evaluated with the purpose of reducing the microbial fermentation in stored cattle waste and the resulting odor emissions. Duplicate sealed 2-L flasks with 500 ml waste slurry, with and without antimicrobial inhibitors, were used to measure the production of short-chain volatile fatty acids, lactate, and total fermentation gas over 27–30 days. A combination of chlorhexidine diacetate (2 mM), iodoacetate (2 mM), and α-pinene (3.8 mM) reduced gas production 80% (1000 ml to 200 ml) and total volatile fatty acid production 50% (145 mM to 72 mM). Pinene had little antimicrobial effect; rather, it served as an effective masking agent, giving the waste a less offensive odor. A combination of chlorhexidine diacetate and the deaminase inhibitor, diphenyliodonium chloride (1.3 mM) had a similar effect in reducing short-chain volatile fatty acid production (145 mM to 80 mM). It is concluded that a combination of antimicrobial agents may be useful in controlling odor emissions and conserving organic matter in livestock wastes, therefore providing a potentially more useful byproduct waste when used as plant fertilizer. An incomplete anoxic fermentation of livestock waste results in offensive odor emissions. Antimicrobial additives may be useful in controlling odor emissions and pathogens. Natural antimicrobial compounds, carvacrol or thymol at 16.75 mM (2.5 g/l) completely inhibited the production of the offensive odor compounds, isobutyrate, valerate, isovalerate, and cresol, and significantly reduced other short-chain volatile fatty acids and gas emissions from swine waste. Fecal coliforms were reduced from 6.3 × 106 to 1.0 × 103 cells per ml 2 days after treatment with carvacrol (13.3 mM) and were not detectable within 14 days. Total culturable anaerobic bacteria were reduced from 12.4 × 1010 to 7.2 × 108 cells per ml after 2 days and were suppressed below this level for 28 days. Lactate production was not prevalent in untreated swine waste indicating that the microbial populations differ from those in cattle waste. Carvacrol and thymol were stable in swine waste under anoxic conditions for 62 days with 90 to 95% of the additive being recovered in the waste solids. In conclusion, carvacrol and thymol are not metabolized in anoxic swine waste and they are potentially useful in controlling odor emissions and pathogens in swine waste. The composition of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of various leaf tobacco brands and their blends has been studied. The differences in the content of nicotine, solanone, tetramethyl hexadecenol, megastigmatrienones, and other compounds, determining the specific tobacco smell, have been revealed. A microbial consortium, which is able to deodorize simulated tobacco emissions and decompose nicotine, has been formed by long-term adaptation to the VOCs of tobacco leaves in a laboratory reactor, functioning as a trickle-bed biofilter. Such a biofilter eliminates 90% of the basic toxic compound (nicotine) and odor-active compounds; the filtration efficiency does not change for tobacco brands with different VOC concentrations or in the presence of foreign substances. The main strains, isolated from the formed consortium and participating in the nicotine decomposition process, belong to the genera Pseudomonas, Bacillus, and Rhodococcus. An examination of the biofilter trickling fluid has shown full decomposition of nicotine and odor-active VOCs. The compounds, revealed in the trickling fluid, did not have any odor and were nontoxic. The obtained results make it possible to conduct scaling of the biofiltration process to eliminate odor from air emissions in the tobacco industry.  相似文献

A pilot-scale mobile biofilter was developed where two types of wood chips (western cedar and 2 in. hardwood) were examined to treat odor emissions from a deep-pit swine finishing facility in central Iowa. The biofilters were operated continuously for 13 weeks at different air flow rates resulting in a variable empty bed residence time (EBRT) from 1.6 to 7.3 s. During this test period, solid-phase microextraction (SPME) PDMS/DVB 65 microm fibers were used to extract volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from both the control plenum and biofilter treatments. Analyses of VOCs were carried out using a multidimentional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-olfactometry (MDGC-MS-O) system. Results indicated that both types of chips achieved significant reductions in p-cresol, phenol, indole and skatole which represent some of the most odorous and odor-defining compounds known for swine facilities. The results also showed that maintaining proper moisture content is critical to the success of wood-chip based biofilters and that this factor is more important than media depth and residence time.  相似文献

A study was conducted to investigate the microbial community structure, the physicochemical properties, and the relationships between these parameters of a full-scale industrial biofilter used for waste gas abatement in an animal-rendering plant. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was successfully combined with digital image analysis to study the composition of the microbial community. Several new nucleic acid probes were designed and established based on published 16S rDNA sequences and on ones retrieved from the biomass of the biofilter under investigation. Bacterial detection rates varied greatly over time and filterbed depth between 27.2% and 88.1% relative to DAPI counts. Overall, members of the Betaproteobacteria followed by Actinobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, Cytophaga-Flavobacteria, Firmicutes and Gammaproteobacteria were the most abundant groups. Among the groups below phylum level, members of the Alcaligenes/Bordetella lineage were on average the most abundant group accounting for up to 8.5% of DAPI-stained cells. Whereas the community composition generally showed no vertical gradient, the lower 50 cm of the biofilter proved to be the most active part for the degradation of aldehydes such as 2- and 3-methylbutanal, 2-methylpropanal, and hexanal. This zone of the filterbed being operated in up-flow direction degraded about 80% of these compounds. Dimethyldisulphide was the most common reduced sulphur compound. Statistical analysis of microbial versus waste gas parameters generally revealed only weak or non-significant correlations between the two. Possible explanations for this finding are discussed.  相似文献

Biofiltration is an efficient biotechnological process used for waste gas abatement in various industrial processes. It offers low operating and capital costs and produces minimal secondary waste streams. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of a pilot scale biofilter in terms of pollutants’ removal efficiencies and the bacterial dynamics under different inlet concentrations of H2S. The treatment of odourous pollutants by biofiltration was investigated at a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) (Charguia, Tunis, Tunisia). Sampling and analyses were conducted for 150 days. Inlet H2S concentration recorded was between 200 and 1300 mg H2S.m−3. Removal efficiencies reached 99% for the majority of the running time at an empty bed retention time (EBRT) of 60 s. Heterotrophic bacteria were found to be the dominant microorganisms in the biofilter. The bacteria were identified as the members of the genus Bacillus, Pseudomonas and xanthomonadacea bacterium. The polymerase chain reaction-single stranded conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) method showed that bacterial community profiles changed with the H2S inlet concentration. Our results indicated that the biofilter system, containing peat as the packing material, was proved able to remove H2S from the WWTP odourous pollutants.  相似文献

The treatment of odorous pollutants by microorganisms on packed waste straw and cortex was investigated at the wastewater treatment plant of the Shanghai petrochemical factory. The removal efficiency of H2S, NH3 and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) reached 98%, 91% and 90%, respectively after operation for one month at an empty bed retention time (EBRT) of 120 s. The heterotrophic bacteria were found to be the dominant microorganism in the biofilter, while fungi and actinomycetes were also present. The bacteria were mostly identified as the members of the genus Bacillus (62.5% of cultured bacteria). The single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) results revealed that the genus Bacillus and Pseudomonas were the predominant bacteria. The microbial diversity gradually increased as the treatment progressed, which indicated that the microbial community in the biofilter became more stable upon pollutant removal. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed to evaluate the microorganism growth on the media. It was found that the waste straw and cortex were suitable for microorganism attachment and growth, and may have potential application in odor treatment.  相似文献

This study applied a pilot-scale trickle-bed air biofilter (TBAB) system for treating waste gas emitted from the breather vent of a vertical fixed roof storage tank containing p-xylene (p-X) liquid. The volatile organic compound (VOC) concentration of the waste gas was related to ambient temperature as well as solar radiation, peaking at above 6300 ppmv of p-X and 25000 ppmv of total hydrocarbons during the hours of 8 AM to 3 PM. When the activated carbon adsorber was employed as a VOC buffer, the peak waste gas VOC concentration was significantly reduced resulting in a stably and efficiently performing TBAB system. The pressure drop appeared to be low, reflecting that the TBAB system could be employed in the prolonged operation with a low running penalty. These advantages suggest that the TBAB system is a cost-effective treatment technology for VOC emission from a fixed roof storage tank.  相似文献

Municipal solid waste is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions through decomposition and life-cycle activities processes. The majority of these emissions are a result of landfilling, which remains the primary waste disposal strategy internationally. As a result, countries have been incorporating alternative forms of waste management strategies such as energy recovery from landfill gas capture, aerobic landfilling (aerox landfills), pre-composting of waste prior to landfilling, landfill capping and composting of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste. As the changing global climate has been one of the major environmental challenges facing the world today, there is an increasing need to understand the impact of waste management on greenhouse gas emissions. This review paper serves to provide an overview on the impact of landfilling (and its various alternatives) and composting on greenhouse gas emissions taking into account streamlined life cycle activities and the decomposition process. The review suggests greenhouse gas emissions from waste decomposition are considerably higher for landfills than composting. However, mixed results were found for greenhouse gas emissions for landfill and composting operational activities. Nonetheless, in general, net greenhouse gas emissions for landfills tend to be higher than that for composting facilities.  相似文献

While gasoline vapor emissions are common sources of air pollution, very few results have been published on the biofilter biodegradation of gasoline vapors in flowing waste gases. This investigation reports on a bench‐scale biofilter of an ID of 50 mm and a bed height of 850 mm with an inexpensive fire clay chip medium as a packing material. The biofilter was inoculated with a concentrate of a mixed culture of the common microflora. After an acclimatization period of three weeks, loading tests were carried out at increasing gasoline inlet concentrations at a constant Empty Bed Retention Time (EBRT) of 16 min. Evaluating the removal rate and efficiency of aliphatic and aromatic fractions of the gasoline vapor, it was found that in a range of overall organic loading (OLTPH) up to 33.6 g/m3 h the removal efficiency of aromatic hydrocarbons decreased from 90 to 70 %, while that of the aliphatic components decreased much more significantly from 60 to 10 % after six months of operation. The removal rate and efficiency achieved for total petroleum hydrocarbons were 13 g/m3 h and 45 %, respectively. The microbial strains and genera of culturable cells in the inoculum and in the biofilm after six months of gasoline degradation were evaluated.  相似文献

The concentration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during the composting of kitchen waste and pruning residues, and the abatement of VOCs by different compost biofilters was studied. VOCs removal efficiencies greater than 90% were obtained using composts of municipal solid waste (MSW) or MSW-pruning residue as biofilter material. An electronic nose identified qualitative differences among the biofilter output gases at very low concentrations of VOCs. These differences were related to compost constituents, compost particle size (2-7 or 7-20 mm), and a combination of both factors. The total concentration of VOCs determined by a photoionization analyser and inferred from electronic nose data sets were correlated over an ample range of concentrations of VOCs, showing that these techniques could be specially adapted for the monitoring of these processes.  相似文献

A biofilter inoculated with Arthrobacter sp. was applied to the simultaneous elimination of trimethylamine (TMA) and ammonia (NH3) from the exhaust air of swine waste storage pits. The results showed that the biofilter achieved average removal efficiencies of 96.8+/-2.5% and 97.2+/-2.3% for TMA and NH3, respectively. A near-neutral pH (7.3-7.4) was maintained due to the accumulation of acid metabolites and the adsorption of alkaline NH3. Low moisture demand, low pressure drop and high biofilm stability in the system were other advantages. After long-term operation, the bacterial community structure showed that at least twenty-five bands were explicitly detected by a denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) method. However, the inoculated Arthrobacter sp. still maintained a dominant population (>50%). Paracoccus denitrificans' presence in the biofilter could play an important role in oxidizing NH3 and reducing nitrite by heterotrophic nitrification and anaerobic denitrification.  相似文献

Acetone, toluene and styrene (ATS) are representative air pollutants emanating during the production process in fibreglass and composite manufacturing industries. In this study, the performance of a steady-state biofilter inoculated with the fungus Sporothrix variecibatus was tested at different empty bed residence times (EBRTs), and at different inlet concentrations of ATS, corresponding to total pollutant loading rates ranging from 30 to 490 gm(-3)hour(-1). Styrene was somewhat better removed (47-100%) in the biofilter than acetone (34-100%) and toluene (42-100%), with maximum elimination capacities (EC(max)) of 108, 72 and 144 gm(-3)hour(-1), for ATS, respectively. Besides, it was observed that, although increasing the concentration of ATS decreased their removal, the presence of toluene also decreased the EC(max) of both acetone and toluene in the ternary mixture. During transient operations, the biofilter was subjected to intermittent shutdown and re-start operations where the gas-phase pollutant flow was stopped for either 5 or 16d. It was observed that, for longer shutdown periods (16d), the biofilter required nearly 8-10d to reach similar removal patterns to those observed before the shutdown phase. Batch biodegradation tests were conducted, using Sporothrix-like microorganisms present in the leachate of the biofilter, with a mixture of ATS as the sole carbon source. Complete removal of ATS was observed within the test period of 168 hours. Styrene was degraded faster, with a specific substrate utilization rate of 0.9 mg styrenemg biomass(-1)hour(-1), followed by toluene (0.6) and acetone (0.44). The effectiveness of the biofilter to reach high total EC (321.3 gm(-3)hour(-1)), and withstand transient operations shows the robustness of this fungal-bioreactor and its suitability to handle emissions from a fibreglass and composite manufacturing industry.  相似文献

The performance of a biofilter packed with Active Carbon (AC) was evaluated. The effluent (alcohol, ketones, esters, aromatic and chlorinated compounds) treated was a representative mixture of most common industrial emissions. To achieve a better knowledge of multicomponent adsorption mechanisms, and to underline the interest of inoculating AC, a control abiotic humidified filter had been operated in the same conditions as the biofilter. For a load of 110 g VOC m(-3) AC h(-1), after 55 days of operation, the removal efficiency was higher in the biotic than in the abiotic filter (85% vs 55%, respectively). Moreover, in the biofilter, at steady state, the elimination of all compounds was almost complete except for chlorinated compounds and p-xylene (removal efficiency of 25% and 64%, respectively). The microbial colonization of AC involved a decrease of the adsorption sites accessibility and enhanced the treatment of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) having a lower affinity for activated carbon. Moreover, while aromatic compounds and MIBK were eliminated along the overall height of the biofilter, pollutants with reduced affinity for AC, such as methanol, acetone, and halogenated compounds were only treated on the second half of the reactor. Thus, the affinity for activated carbon was an important parameter controlling the biodegradation process. Nevertheless, the use of AC as packing material in biofilters treating complex mixtures of VOCs is limited. Actually, similar removal efficiency could be reached, in the same conditions, for a biofilter packed with granular peat. Furthermore, for the biofilter packed with AC, the column height necessary to remove biodegradable compounds, with reduced affinity for the support, was important.  相似文献

Deuterated styrene ([(2)H(8)]styrene) was used as a tracer in combination with phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis for characterization of styrene-degrading microbial populations of biofilters used for treatment of waste gases. Deuterated fatty acids were detected and quantified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The method was evaluated with pure cultures of styrene-degrading bacteria and defined mixed cultures of styrene degraders and non-styrene-degrading organisms. Incubation of styrene degraders for 3 days with [(2)H(8)]styrene led to fatty acids consisting of up to 90% deuterated molecules. Mixed-culture experiments showed that specific labeling of styrene-degrading strains and only weak labeling of fatty acids of non-styrene-degrading organisms occurred after incubation with [(2)H(8)]styrene for up to 7 days. Analysis of actively degrading filter material from an experimental biofilter and a full-scale biofilter by this method showed that there were differences in the patterns of labeled fatty acids. For the experimental biofilter the fatty acids with largest amounts of labeled molecules were palmitic acid (16:0), 9,10-methylenehexadecanoic acid (17:0 cyclo9-10), and vaccenic acid (18:1 cis11). These lipid markers indicated that styrene was degraded by organisms with a Pseudomonas-like fatty acid profile. In contrast, the most intensively labeled fatty acids of the full-scale biofilter sample were palmitic acid and cis-11-hexadecenoic acid (16:1 cis11), indicating that an unknown styrene-degrading taxon was present. Iso-, anteiso-, and 10-methyl-branched fatty acids showed no or weak labeling. Therefore, we found no indication that styrene was degraded by organisms with methyl-branched fatty fatty acids, such as Xanthomonas, Bacillus, Streptomyces, or Gordonia spp.  相似文献

Biofiltration of ethylbenzene vapours: influence of the packing material   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
In order to investigate suitable packing materials, a soil amendment composed of granular high mineralized peat (35% organic content) locally available has been evaluated as carrier material for biofiltration of volatile organic compounds in air by comparison with a fibrous peat (95% organic content). Both supports were tested to eliminate ethylbenzene from air streams in laboratory-scale reactors inoculated with a two-month conditioned culture. In pseudo-steady state operation, experiments at various ethylbenzene inlet loads (ILs) were carried out. Maximum elimination capacity of about 120 g m(-3) h(-1) for an IL of 135 g m(-3) h(-1) was obtained for the fibrous peat. The soil amendment reactor achieved a maximum elimination capacity of about 45 g m(-3) h(-1) for an inlet load of 55 g m(-3) h(-1). Ottengraf-van den Oever model was applied to the prediction of the performance of both biofilters. The influence of gas flow rate was also studied: the fibrous peat reactor kept near complete removal efficiency for empty bed residence times greater than 1 min. For the soil amendment reactor, an empty bed residence time greater than 2 min was needed to achieve adequate removal efficiency. Concentration profiles along the biofilter were also compared: elimination occurred in the whole fibrous peat biofilter, while in the soil amendment reactor the biodegradation only occurred in the first 65% part of the biofilter. Results indicated that soil amendment material, previously selected to increase the organic content, would have potential application as biofilter carrier to treat moderate VOC inlet loads.  相似文献
