We inadvertently subjected a group of goats to 5 mo of cold exposure (mean minimum temperature less than -13 degrees C) during an experiment designed to examine the effects of training by daily running on one member of each sibling pair. During the three coldest months, the sedentary but cold-exposed goats experienced a 34% increase in maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2 max), P < 0.01) and a 29% increase in running speed at maximal (P < 0.05). When temperatures increased in the spring, both oxygen uptake and running speed decreased. We interpret these findings as evidence that cold is a sufficient stimulus to invoke the development of aerobic structures in muscle and that these structures subsequently can be utilized for the novel task of running. When the experiment was subsequently repeated without the cold exposure, running speed and VO(2 max) of trained animals increased less than in either group of cold-exposed animals. However, the cost of transport of these warm runners was lower than either group of cold-exposed animals (from 13-19%, P < 0. 0001). Thus, although aerobic capacity was increased with acclimation to severe winter weather, cold-acclimated goats operated with lower efficiency during locomotion.  相似文献

Purpose

To determine the effect of intravenous iron supplementation on performance, fatigue and overall mood in runners without clinical iron deficiency.

Methods

Fourteen distance runners with serum ferritin 30–100 µg·L−1 were randomly assigned to receive three blinded injections of intravenous ferric-carboxymaltose (2 ml, 100 mg, IRON) or normal saline (PLACEBO) over four weeks (weeks 0, 2, 4). Athletes performed a 3,000 m time trial and 10×400 m monitored training session on consecutive days at week 0 and again following each injection. Hemoglobin mass (Hbmass) was assessed via carbon monoxide rebreathing at weeks 0 and 6. Fatigue and mood were determined bi-weekly until week 6 via Total Fatigue Score (TFS) and Total Mood Disturbance (TMD) using the Brief Fatigue Inventory and Brunel Mood Scale. Data were analyzed using magnitude-based inferences, based on the unequal variances t-statistic and Cohen''s Effect sizes (ES).

Results

Serum ferritin increased in IRON only (Week 0: 62.8±21.9, Week 4: 128.1±46.6 µg·L−1; p = 0.002) and remained elevated two weeks after the final injection (127.0±66.3 µg·L−1, p = 0.01), without significant changes in Hbmass. Supplementation had a moderate effect on TMD of IRON (ES -0.77) with scores at week 6 lower than PLACEBO (ES -1.58, p = 0.02). Similarly, at week 6, TFS was significantly improved in IRON vs. PLACEBO (ES –1.54, p = 0.05). There were no significant improvements in 3,000 m time in either group (Week 0 vs. Week 4; Iron: 625.6±55.5 s vs. 625.4±52.7 s; PLACEBO: 624.8±47.2 s vs. 639.1±59.7 s); but IRON reduced their average time for the 10×400 m training session at week 2 (Week 0: 78.0±6.6 s, Week 2: 77.2±6.3; ES–0.20, p = 0.004).

Conclusion

During 6 weeks of training, intravenous iron supplementation improved perceived fatigue and mood of trained athletes with no clinical iron deficiency, without concurrent improvements in oxygen transport capacity or performance.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the main bioenergetics and neuromuscular determinants of the time to exhaustion (T(lim)) at the velocity corresponding to maximal oxygen uptake in recreational long-distance runners. Twenty runners performed the following tests on 5 different days: (a) maximal incremental treadmill test, (b) 2 submaximal tests to determine running economy and vertical stiffness, (c) exhaustive test to measured the T(lim), (d) maximum dynamic strength test, and (e) muscle power production test. Aerobic and anaerobic energy contributions during the T(lim) test were also estimated. The stepwise multiple regression method selected 3 independent variables to explain T(lim) variance. Total energy production explained 84.1% of the shared variance (p = 0.001), whereas peak oxygen uptake (V(O2)peak) measured during T(lim)and lower limb muscle power ability accounted for the additional 10% of the shared variance (p = 0.014). These data suggest that the total energy production, V(O2)peak, and lower limb muscle power ability are the main physiological and neuromuscular determinants of T(lim)in recreational long-distance runners.  相似文献

We hypothesized that all-out running speeds for efforts lasting from a few seconds to several minutes could be accurately predicted from two measurements: the maximum respective speeds supported by the anaerobic and aerobic powers of the runner. To evaluate our hypothesis, we recruited seven competitive runners of different event specialties and tested them during treadmill and overground running on level surfaces. The maximum speed supported by anaerobic power was determined from the fastest speed that subjects could attain for a burst of eight steps (approximately 3 s or less). The maximum speed supported by aerobic power, or the velocity at maximal oxygen uptake, was determined from a progressive, discontinuous treadmill test to failure. All-out running speeds for trials of 3-240 s were measured during 10-13 constant-speed treadmill runs to failure and 4 track runs at specified distances. Measured values of the maximum speeds supported by anaerobic and aerobic power, in conjunction with an exponential constant, allowed us to predict the speeds of all-out treadmill trials to within an average of 2.5% (R2 = 0.94; n = 84) and track trials to within 3.4% (R2 = 0.86; n = 28). An algorithm using this exponent and only two of the all-out treadmill runs to predict the remaining treadmill trials was nearly as accurate (average = 3.7%; R2 = 0.93; n = 77). We conclude that our technique 1) provides accurate predictions of high-speed running performance in trained runners and 2) offers a performance assessment alternative to existing tests of anaerobic power and capacity.  相似文献

Anaerobic energy capacity was evaluated by maximal oxygen deficit (MOD) as well as by blood gas and muscle biopsy variables during short exhausting running in six recreational (RR) and eight competitive sprint and middle distance runners (SMDR). On 3 days runs to exhaustion were executed. Two runs were performed at a treadmill gradient of 15% at speeds which resulted in exhaustion after approximately 1 (R15%, 1min) and 2–3 min (R15%, 2–3min), respectively. On the 3rd day, the subjects ran with the treadmill at a gradient of 1% at a speed which caused exhaustion after 2–3 min (R1%, 2–3min). The runner performance was assessed from 400 m [RR, median 64.8 (range 62.2–69.6) s; SMDR, median 49.4 (range 48.5–52.0) s] and 800 m [RR, median 158.8 (range 153.3–170.2) s; SMDR, median 115.2 (range 113.3–123.3) s] track times. Muscle biopsies from gastrocnemius muscle were obtained before and immediately after R15%, 2–3min, from which muscle lactate and creatine phosphate (CP) concentrations, fibre type distribution, capillaries per fibre, total lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity and the LDH isoenzyme pattern were determined. The MOD increased with the treadmill gradient and duration. During both treadmill and track runs, SMDR performance was superior to that of RR, but no significant differences were observed with respect to MOD, muscle fibre type distribution, total LDH activity, its iso-enzyme pattern, changes in muscle lactate or CP concentrations. However, after treadmill runs, peak venous lactate concentration and partial pressures of carbon dioxide were higher, and pH lower in SMDR. Also the number of capillaries per muscle fibre and the maximal oxygen uptake were larger in SMDR. These findings would suggest that the superior performance of SMDR depended more on their aerobic than on their anaerobic capacity.  相似文献

AIM

Muscular fatigue is a complex phenomenon affected by muscle fiber type and several metabolic and ionic changes within myocytes. Mitochondria are the main determinants of muscle oxidative capacity which is also one determinant of muscle fatigability. By measuring the concentrations of intracellular stores of high-energy phosphates it is possible to estimate the energy production efficiency and metabolic recovery of the muscle. Low intrinsic aerobic capacity is known to be associated with reduced mitochondrial function. Whether low intrinsic aerobic capacity also results in slower metabolic recovery of skeletal muscle is not known. Here we studied the influence of intrinsic aerobic capacity on in vivo muscle metabolism during maximal, fatiguing electrical stimulation.

METHODS

Animal subjects were genetically heterogeneous rats selectively bred to differ for non–trained treadmill running endurance, low capacity runners (LCRs) and high capacity runners (HCRs) (n = 15–19). We measured the concentrations of major phosphorus compounds and force parameters in a contracting triceps surae muscle complex using 31P-Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P-MRS) combined with muscle force measurement from repeated isometric twitches.

RESULTS

Our results demonstrated that phosphocreatine re-synthesis after maximal muscle stimulation was significantly slower in LCRs (p<0.05). LCR rats also became promptly fatigued and maintained the intramuscular pH poorly compared to HCRs. Half relaxation time (HRT) of the triceps surae was significantly longer in LCRs throughout the stimulation protocol (p≤0.05) and maximal rate of torque development (MRTD) was significantly lower in LCRs compared to HCRs from 2 min 30 s onwards (p≤0.05).

CONCLUSION

We observed that LCRs are more sensitive to fatigue and have slower metabolic recovery compared to HCRs after maximal muscle contractions. These new findings are associated with reduced running capacity and with previously found lower mitochondrial content, increased body mass and higher complex disease risk of LCRs.  相似文献

The focus of the present study was to investigate the effects of a fast-start pacing strategy on running performance and pulmonary oxygen uptake () kinetics at the upper boundary of the severe-intensity domain. Eleven active male participants (28±10 years, 70±5 kg, 176±6 cm, 57±4 mL/kg/min) visited the laboratory for a series of tests that were performed until exhaustion: 1) an incremental test; 2) three laboratory test sessions performed at 95, 100 and 110% of the maximal aerobic speed; 3) two to four constant speed tests for the determination of the highest constant speed (HS) that still allowed achieving maximal oxygen uptake; and 4) an exercise based on the HS using a higher initial speed followed by a subsequent decrease. To predict equalized performance values for the constant pace, the relationship between time and distance/speed through log-log modelling was used. When a fast-start was utilized, subjects were able to cover a greater distance in a performance of similar duration in comparison with a constant-pace performance (constant pace: 670 m±22%; fast-start: 683 m±22%; P = 0.029); subjects also demonstrated a higher exercise tolerance at a similar average speed when compared with constant-pace performance (constant pace: 114 s±30%; fast-start: 125 s±26%; P = 0.037). Moreover, the mean response time was reduced after a fast start (constant pace: 22.2 s±28%; fast-start: 19.3 s±29%; P = 0.025). In conclusion, middle-distance running performances with a duration of 2–3 min are improved and response time is faster when a fast-start is adopted.  相似文献

Background

Running economy and performance in middle distance running depend on several physiological factors, which include anthropometric variables, functional characteristics, training volume and intensity. Since little information is available about hematological predictors of middle distance running time, we investigated whether some hematological parameters may be associated with middle distance running performance in a large sample of recreational runners.

Methods

The study population consisted in 43 amateur runners (15 females, 28 males; median age 47 years), who successfully concluded a 21.1 km half-marathon at 75–85% of their maximal aerobic power (VO2max). Whole blood was collected 10 min before the run started and immediately thereafter, and hematological testing was completed within 2 hours after sample collection.

Results

The values of lymphocytes and eosinophils exhibited a significant decrease compared to pre-run values, whereas those of mean corpuscular volume (MCV), platelets, mean platelet volume (MPV), white blood cells (WBCs), neutrophils and monocytes were significantly increased after the run. In univariate analysis, significant associations with running time were found for pre-run values of hematocrit, hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), red blood cell distribution width (RDW), MPV, reticulocyte hemoglobin concentration (RetCHR), and post-run values of MCH, RDW, MPV, monocytes and RetCHR. In multivariate analysis, in which running time was entered as dependent variable whereas age, sex, blood lactate, body mass index, VO2max, mean training regimen and the hematological parameters significantly associated with running performance in univariate analysis were entered as independent variables, only MPV values before and after the trial remained significantly associated with running time. After adjustment for platelet count, the MPV value before the run (p = 0.042), but not thereafter (p = 0.247), remained significantly associated with running performance.

Conclusion

The significant association between baseline MPV and running time suggest that hyperactive platelets may exert some pleiotropic effects on endurance performance.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of recreational soccer (SOC) compared to moderate-intensity continuous running (RUN) on all health-related physical fitness components in healthy untrained men. Sixty-nine participants were recruited and randomly assigned to one of three groups, of which sixty-four completed the study: a soccer training group (SOC; n = 20, 34±4 (means±SD) years, 78.1±8.3 kg, 179±4 cm); a running group (RUN; n = 21, 32±4 years, 78.0±5.5 kg, 179±7 cm); or a passive control group (CON; n = 23, 30±3 years, 76.6±12.0 kg, 178±8 cm). The training intervention lasted 12 weeks and consisted of three 60-min sessions per week. All participants were tested for each of the following physical fitness components: maximal aerobic power, minute ventilation, maximal heart rate, squat jump (SJ), countermovement jump with arm swing (CMJ), sit-and-reach flexibility, and body composition. Over the 12 weeks, VO2max relative to body weight increased more (p<0.05) in SOC (24.2%, ES = 1.20) and RUN (21.5%, ES = 1.17) than in CON (-5.0%, ES = -0.24), partly due to large changes in body mass (-5.9, -5.7 and +2.6 kg, p<0.05 for SOC, RUN and CON, respectively). Over the 12 weeks, SJ and CMJ performance increased more (p<0.05) in SOC (14.8 and 12.1%, ES = 1.08 and 0.81) than in RUN (3.3 and 3.0%, ES = 0.23 and 0.19) and CON (0.3 and 0.2%), while flexibility also increased more (p<0.05) in SOC (94%, ES = 0.97) than in RUN and CON (0–2%). In conclusion, untrained men displayed marked improvements in maximal aerobic power after 12 weeks of soccer training and moderate-intensity running, partly due to large decreases in body mass. Additionally soccer training induced pronounced positive effects on jump performance and flexibility, making soccer an effective broad-spectrum fitness training intervention.  相似文献

The role of anaerobic ability in middle distance running performance   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between anaerobic ability and middle distance running performance. Ten runners of similar performance capacities (5 km times: 16.72, SE 0.2 min) were examined during 4 weeks of controlled training. The runners performed a battery of tests each week [maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max), vertical jump, and Margaria power run] and raced 5 km three times (weeks 1, 2, 4) on an indoor 200-m track (all subjects competing). Regression analysis revealed that the combination of time to exhaustion (TTE) during the VO2max test (r2 = 0.63) and measures from the Margaria power test (W.kg-1, r2 = 0.18; W, r2 = 0.05) accounted for 86% of the total variance in race times (P less than 0.05). Regression analysis demonstrated that TTE was influenced by both anaerobic ability [vertical jump, power (W.kg-1) and aerobic capacity (VO2max, ml.kg-1.min-1)]. These results indicate that the anaerobic systems influence middle distance performance in runners of similar abilities.  相似文献

We investigated which attribute or what combination of attributes would best account for distance running performance of female runners. The subjects were 30 well-trained female distance runners, aged 19 to 23 years. Anthropometric and body composition characteristics, pulmonary function characteristics, blood properties, and cardiorespiratory function characteristics were measured at rest or during submaximal and maximal exercise. Analyses of the data showed that the relationship of oxygen uptake corresponding to lactate threshold (VO2T, ml.kg-1.min-1) with each distance running performance was substantially higher as compared with the relationship of other independent variables including maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). Furthermore, multiple regression analysis indicated that running performances in 3,000m, 5,000m, and 10,000m are best accounted for by a combination of VO2/LT (X1), fat-free weight (X2), and/or mean corpuscular volume (X3). A multiple regression equation for predicting the 5,000m (Y, s) running performance was formulated as Y = -14.75X1-3. 03X2-5.79X3 + 2282.1. We suggest that VO2max would not stand alone as a decisive factor of distance running success in female runners, and that the distance running performance could be better accounted for by a combination of several attributes relating to lactate threshold, body composition, and/or hematological status. The linear regression of the predicted running performance on the actually measured running performance can be accepted in the range of 986-1197s.  相似文献

The evaluation of performance through the application of adequate physical tests during a sportive season may be a useful tool to evaluate training adaptations and determine training intensities. For runners, treadmill incremental VO(2)max tests with gas exchange analysis have been widely used to determine maximal and submaximal parameters such as the ventilatory threshold (VT) and respiratory compensation point (RCP) running speed. However, these tests often differ in methodological characteristics (e.g., stage duration, grade, and speed increment size), and few studies have examined the reproducibility of their protocol. Therefore, the aim of this study was to verify the reproducibility and determine the running speeds related to maximal and submaximal parameters of a specific incremental maximum effort treadmill protocol for amateur runners. Eleven amateur male runners underwent 4 repetitions of the protocol (25-second stages, each increasing by 0.3 km·h in running speed while the treadmill grade remained fixed at 1%) after 3 minutes of warm-up at 8-8.5 km·h. We found no significant differences in any of the analyzed parameters, including VT, RCP, and VO(2)max during the 4 repetitions (p > 0.05). Further, the results related to running speed showed high within-subject reproducibility (coefficient of variation < 5.2%). The typical error (TE) values for running speed related to VT (TE = 0.62 km·h), RCP (TE = 0.35 km·h), and VO(2)max (TE = 0.43 km·h) indicated high sensitivity and reproducibility of this protocol. We conclude that this VO(2)max protocol facilitates a clear determination of the running speeds related to VT, RCP, and VO(2)max and has the potential to enable the evaluation of small training effects on maximal and submaximal parameters.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to show the relationship between oxygen deficit and the time to exhaustion (tlim) at maximal aerobic speed (MAS). The minimum speed that elicits VO(2max) was assumed to be the maximal aerobic speed (MAS). Fourteen subelite male runners (mean (SD: age = 27 +/- 5 yrs: VO(2max) = 68.9 +/- 4.6 ml kg (-1). min ( -1); MAS = 21.5 +/- 1 km h (-1) ) participated in the study. Each subject performed an incremental test to determine and MAS. The subjects ran to exhaustion at velocities corresponding to 100 and 120 % MAS. Oxygen deficit was measured during the period exercise to exhaustion at 120% of MAS and was calculated from the difference between O(2) demand and the accumulated O 2 uptake. The tlim values at 100% MAS were correlated with the values of tlim at 120% MAS (r = 0.52). The results reveal that the oxygen deficit was related to the time to exhaustion at MAS and indicate that the greater the oxygen deficit, the greater the time to exhaustion at MAS. It was also noted that the adjustment of oxygen consumption is related to the oxygen deficit. In other words, the subjects who have an important anaerobic capacity are the most efficient during an exercise time to exhaustion at MAS. The time limit values can be expressed by a linear regression making intervene MAS and anaerobic capacity. This conclusion could be of great interest in the training of middle distance runners.  相似文献

A positive relationship between running economy and maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O2max) has been postulated in trained athletes, but previous evidence is equivocal and could have been confounded by statistical artefacts. Whether this relationship is preserved in response to running training (changes in running economy and V̇O2max) has yet to be explored. This study examined the relationships of (i) running economy and V̇O2max between runners, and (ii) the changes in running economy and V̇O2max that occur within runners in response to habitual training. 168 trained distance runners (males, n = 98, V̇O2max 73.0 ± 6.3 mL∙kg-1∙min-1; females, n = 70, V̇O2max 65.2 ± 5.9 mL kg-1∙min-1) performed a discontinuous submaximal running test to determine running economy (kcal∙km-1). A continuous incremental treadmill running test to volitional exhaustion was used to determine V̇O2max 54 participants (males, n = 27; females, n = 27) also completed at least one follow up assessment. Partial correlation analysis revealed small positive relationships between running economy and V̇O2max (males r = 0.26, females r = 0.25; P<0.006), in addition to moderate positive relationships between the changes in running economy and V̇O2max in response to habitual training (r = 0.35; P<0.001). In conclusion, the current investigation demonstrates that only a small to moderate relationship exists between running economy and V̇O2max in highly trained distance runners. With >85% of the variance in these parameters unexplained by this relationship, these findings reaffirm that running economy and V̇O2max are primarily determined independently.  相似文献

Running is a popular sport and recreational physical activity worldwide. Musculoskeletal injuries in runners are common and may be attributed to the inability to control pelvic equilibrium in the coronal plane. This lack of pelvic control in the frontal plane can stem from dysfunction of the gluteus medius. The aim of this systematic review was therefore to: (i) compile evidence of the activity profile of gluteus medius when running; (ii) identify how gluteus medius activity (electromyography) varies with speed, cadence and gender when running; (iii) compare gluteus medius activity in injured runners to matched controls. Seven electronic databases were searched from their earliest date until March 2015. Thirteen studies met our eligibility criteria. The activity profile was mono-phasic with a peak during initial loading (four studies). Gluteus medius amplitude increases with running speed; this is most evident in females. The muscles’ activity has been recorded in injured runners with Achilles tendinopathy (two studies) and patellofemoral pain syndrome (three studies). The strongest evidence indicates a moderate and significant reduction in gluteus medius duration of activity when running in people with patellofemoral pain syndrome. This dysfunction can potentially be mediated with running retraining strategies.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of wearing different grades of graduated compression stockings (GCS) on 10-km running performance. After an initial familiarization run, 9 male and 3 female competitive runners (VO?max 68.7 ± 5.8 ml·kg?1·min?1) completed 4 10-km time trials on an outdoor 400-m track wearing either control (0 mm Hg; Con), low (12-15 mm Hg; Low), medium (18-21 mm Hg; Med), or high (23-32 mm Hg; Hi) GCS in a randomized counterbalanced order. Leg power was assessed pre and postrun via countermovement jump using a jump mat. Blood-lactate concentration was assessed pre and postrun, whereas heart rate was monitored continuously during exercise. Perceptual scales were used to assess the comfort, tightness, and any pain associated with wearing GCS. There were no significant differences in performance time between trials (p = 0.99). The change in pre to postexercise jump performance was lower in Low and Med than in Con (p < 0.05). Mean heart rate (p = 0.99) and blood lactate (p = 1.00) were not different between trials. Participants rated Con and Low as more comfortable than Med and Hi (p < 0.01), Med and Hi were rated as tighter than Low (p < 0.01), all GCS were rated as tighter than Con (p < 0.01), and Hi was associated with the most pain (p < 0.01). In conclusion, GCS worn by competitive runners during 10-km time trials did not affect performance time; however Low and Med GCS resulted in greater maintenance of leg power after endurance exercise. Athletes rated low-grade GCS as most comfortable garments to wear during exercise.  相似文献

Cardiorespiratory and blood lactate (La) responses to prolonged submaximal running at an intensity relative to lactate threshold (LT) were examined in 15 recreational runners, aged 19 to 32. In test 1 where treadmill speed was progressively incremented by 10-20m/min until exhaustion, oxygen uptake at the LT (VO2 @ LT: 2.34 +/- 0.331/min or 41.6 +/- 5.7 ml/kg/min) and VO2max (3.58 +/- 0.341/min or 63.6 +/- 5.5 ml/kg/min) were measured. In test 2, the subject was required to run on the treadmill for 1 hour at a fixed velocity (Vt) which corresponded to his Vt @ LT. As expected, mean VO2 ranged during the 1-h submaximal running from 2.31 +/- 0.411/min or 63.0 +/- 7.8% VO2max at min 10-20 to 2.52 +/- 0.351/min or 69.2 +/- 6.2% VO2max at min 50-60, both of which were close to VO2 @ LT (65.2 +/- 4.4% VO2max). The slight decrease in blood La was found from min 20 to min 60, and this was accompanied by a parallel decline in respiratory exchange ratio. Shifts in the energy substrate toward a reliance on fat oxidation may occur during the course of 1-h running at Vt @t LT. The small oxygen debt observed after the 1-h running may confirm the assumption that prolonged running at Vt at LT would be performed in an almost fully aerobic steady state. We conclude that prolonged running at Vt @ LT may possibly maximize health-related benefits in the healthy adult.  相似文献

In elite runners, the ventilation influx, ventilation debt, and ventilation demand of the exercises were calculated on the basis of the pulmonary respiration dynamics during the maximum workout and recovery. The breathing values proved to closely reproduce the changes in the main parameters of oxygen demand at high intensity and duration of the exercise and can be used for quantification and standardization of exercise loads in sports. Three important factors of the aerobic exchange in the body were found to ensure the high level of the sports achievements in running: (1) general increase in the level of pulmonary ventilation (VE), oxygen demand (VO2), and release of carbon dioxide (CO2); (2) intensity of oxygen supply from lungs to the working muscles; (3) the rate of oxygenation (StO2) and total rate of blood circulation.  相似文献

We tested the importance of aerobic metabolism to human running speed directly by altering inspired oxygen concentrations and comparing the maximal speeds attained at different rates of oxygen uptake. Under both normoxic (20.93% O2) and hypoxic (13.00% O2) conditions, four fit adult men completed 15 all-out sprints lasting from 15 to 180 s as well as progressive, discontinuous treadmill tests to determine maximal oxygen uptake and the metabolic cost of steady-state running. Maximal aerobic power was lower by 30% (1.00 +/- 0.15 vs. 0.77 +/- 0.12 ml O2. kg-1. s-1) and sprinting rates of oxygen uptake by 12-25% under hypoxic vs. normoxic conditions while the metabolic cost of submaximal running was the same. Despite reductions in the aerobic energy available for sprinting under hypoxic conditions, our subjects were able to run just as fast for sprints of up to 60 s and nearly as fast for sprints of up to 120 s. This was possible because rates of anaerobic energy release, estimated from oxygen deficits, increased by as much as 18%, and thus compensated for the reductions in aerobic power. We conclude that maximal metabolic power outputs during sprinting are not limited by rates of anaerobic metabolism and that human speed is largely independent of aerobic power during all-out runs of 60 s or less.  相似文献

BackgroundUltramarathon is a high endurance exercise associated with a wide range of exercise-related problems, such as acute kidney injury (AKI). Early recognition of individuals at risk of AKI during ultramarathon event is critical for implementing preventative strategies.ObjectivesTo investigate the impact of speed variability to identify the exercise-related acute kidney injury anticipatively in ultramarathon event.MethodsThis is a prospective, observational study using data from a 100 km ultramarathon in Taipei, Taiwan. The distance of entire ultramarathon race was divided into 10 splits. The mean and variability of speed, which was determined by the coefficient of variation (CV) in each 10 km-split (25 laps of 400 m oval track) were calculated for enrolled runners. Baseline characteristics and biochemical data were collected completely 1 week before, immediately post-race, and one day after race. The main outcome was the development of AKI, defined as Stage II or III according to the Acute Kidney Injury Network (AKIN) criteria. Multivariate analysis was performed to determine the independent association between variables and AKI development.Results26 ultramarathon runners were analyzed in the study. The overall incidence of AKI (in all Stages) was 84.6% (22 in 26 runners). Among these 22 runners, 18 runners were determined as Stage I, 4 runners (15.4%) were determined as Stage II, and none was in Stage III. The covariates of BMI (25.22 ± 2.02 vs. 22.55 ± 1.96, p = 0.02), uric acid (6.88 ± 1.47 vs. 5.62 ± 0.86, p = 0.024), and CV of speed in specific 10-km splits (from secondary 10 km-split (10th – 20th km-split) to 60th – 70th km-split) were significantly different between runners with or without AKI (Stage II) in univariate analysis and showed discrimination ability in ROC curve. In the following multivariate analysis, only CV of speed in 40th – 50th km-split continued to show a significant association to the development of AKI (Stage II) (p = 0.032).ConclusionsThe development of exercise-related AKI was not infrequent in the ultramarathon runners. Because not all runners can routinely receive laboratory studies after race, variability of running speed (CV of speed) may offer a timely and efficient tool to identify AKI early during the competition, and used as a surrogate screening tool, at-risk runners can be identified and enrolled into prevention trials, such as adequate fluid management and avoidance of further NSAID use.  相似文献
