Regulation by irradiance level of the mechanism for dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) acquisition was examined in the red macroalga Gracilaria tenuistipitata Zhang et Xia. For this purpose, affinity for external DIC, carbonic anhydrase (CA; EC 4.2.1.1) activity and content of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco; EC 4.1.1.39) were determined in thalli grown at 45 and 500 μmol photons m−2 s−1. Oxygen evolution rates declined by 50% when the medium pH was changed from 8.1 to 8.7, and the pH compensation point attained was ca. 9.2. These characteristics were unaffected by the light treatments. In contrast, photosynthetic conductance for DIC at pH 8.7 was doubled in thalli grown at high irradiance compared with those grown at low irradiance (to 0.74 × 10−6 from 0.33 × 10−6 m s−1). Photosynthetic rates at saturating DIC concentration were also higher by 60% in thalli grown at high irradiance. These differences could not be attributed to changes in the use of external DIC, since external CA activity did not vary. Although the irradiance level did not modify the pool size of Rubisco, Rubisco content expressed on a chlorophyll a basis was almost doubled at high irradiance. These results likely indicate that the internal transport of DIC towards the active-site of Rubisco, rather than the external use of DIC, is enhanced in the thalli grown at high irradiance. The photosynthetic rates and various components of photosynthesis including ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (Rubisco; EC 4.1.1.39), chlorophyll (Chl), cytochrome (Cyt) f, and coupling factor 1 (CF1) contents, and sucrose-phosphate synthase (SPS; EC 2.4.1.14) activity were examined in young, fully expanded leaves of rice (Oryza sativa L.) grown hydroponically under two irradiances, namely, 1000 and 350 μmol quanta · m−2 · s−1, at three N concentrations. The light-saturated rate of photosynthesis measured at 1800 μmol · m−2 · s−1 was almost the same for a given leaf N content irrespective of growth irradiance. Similarly, Rubisco content and SPS activity were not different for the same leaf N content between irradiance treatments. In contrast, Chl content was significantly greater in the plants grown at 350 μmol · m−2 · s−1, whereas Cyt f and CF1 contents tended to be slightly smaller. However, these changes were not substantial, as shown by the fact that the light-limited rate of photosynthesis measured at 350 μmol · m−2 · s−1 was the same or only a little higher in the plants grown at 350 μmol · m−2 · s−1 and that CO2-saturated photosynthesis did not differ between irradiance treatments. These results indicate that growth-irradiance-dependent changes in N partitioning in a leaf were far from optimal with respect to N-use efficiency of photosynthesis. In spite of the difference in growth irradiance, the relative growth rate of the whole plant did not differ between the treatments because there was an increase in the leaf area ratio in the low-irradiance-grown plants. This increase was associated with the preferential N-investment in leaf blades and the extremely low accumulation of starch and sucrose in leaf blades and sheaths, allowing a more efficient use of the fixed carbon. Thus, morphogenic responses at the whole-plant level may be more important for plants as an adaptation strategy to light environments than a response of N partitioning at the level of a single leaf. Lolium temulentum L. Ba 3081 was grown hydroponically in air (350 μmol mol−1 CO2) and elevated CO2 (700 μmol mol−1 CO2) at two irradiances (150 and 500 μmol m−2 s−1) for 35 days at which point the plants were harvested. Elevated CO2 did not modify relative growth rate or biomass at either irradiance. Foliar carbon-to-nitrogen ratios were decreased at elevated CO2 and plants had a greater number of shorter tillers, particularly at the lower growth irradiance. Both light-limited and light-saturated rates of photosynthesis were stimulated. The amount of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase (Rubisco) protein was increased at elevated CO2, but maximum extractable Rubisco activities were not significantly increased. A pronounced decrease in the Rubisco activation state was found with CO2 enrichment, particularly at the higher growth irradiance. Elevated-CO2-induced changes in leaf carbohydrate composition were small in comparison to those caused by changes in irradiance. No CO2-dependent effects on fructan biosynthesis were observed. Leaf respiration rates were increased by 68% in plants grown with CO2 enrichment and low light. We conclude that high CO2 will only result in increased biomass if total light input favourably increases the photosynthesis-to-respiration ratio. At low irradiances, biomass is more limited by increased rates of respiration than by CO2-induced enhancement of photosynthesis. Received: 23 February 1999 / Accepted: 15 June 1999  相似文献

Infiltrating detached maize (Zeamays L.) leaves with L-galactono-1,4-lactone (L-GAL) resulted in a 4-fold increase in the content of leaf ascorbate. Upon exposure to high irradiance (1000 μmol photons m−2 s−1) at 5 °C, L-GAL leaves de-epoxidized the xanthophyll-cycle pigments faster than the control leaves; the maximal ratio of de-epoxidized xanthophyll-cycle pigments to the whole xanthophyll-cycle pool was the same in both leaf types. The elevated ascorbate content, together with the faster violaxanthin de-epoxidation, did not affect the degree of photoinhibition and the kinetics of the recovery from photoinhibition, assayed by monitoring the maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II primary photochemistry (Fv/Fm). Under the experimental conditions, the thermal energy dissipation seems to be zeaxanthin-independent since, in contrast to the de-epoxidation, the decrease in the efficiency of excitation-energy capture by open photosystem II reaction centers (Fv′/Fm′) during the high-irradiance treatment at low temperature showed the same kinetic in both leaf types. This was also observed for the recovery of the maximal fluorescence after stress. Furthermore, the elevated ascorbate content did not diminish the degradation of pigments or α-tocopherol when leaves were exposed for up to 24 h to high irradiance at low temperature. Moreover, a higher content of ascorbate appeared to increase the requirement for reduced glutathione. Received: 20 May 1999 / Accepted: 29 October 1999  相似文献

Population and community responses of phytoplankton to fluctuating light   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Elena Litchman 《Oecologia》1998,117(1-2):247-257
Light is a major resource in aquatic ecosystems and has a complex pattern of spatio-temporal variability, yet the effects of dynamic light regimes on communities of phytoplankton are largely unexplored. I examined whether and how fluctuating light supply affects the structure and dynamics of phytoplankton communities. The effect of light fluctuations was tested at two average irradiances: low, 25 μmol quanta m−2 s−1 and high, 100 μmol quanta m−2 s−1 in 2- and 18-species communities of freshwater phytoplankton. Species diversity, and abundances of individual species and higher taxa, depended significantly on both the absolute level and the degree of variability in light supply, while total density, total biomass, and species richness responded only to light level. In the two-species assemblage, fluctuations increased diversity at both low and high average irradiances and in the multispecies community fluctuations increased diversity at high irradiance but decreased diversity at low average irradiance. Species richness was higher under low average irradiance and was not affected by the presence or absence of fluctuations. Diatom abundance was increased by fluctuations, especially at low average irradiance, where they became the dominant group, while cyanobacteria and green algae dominated low constant light and all high light treatments. Within each taxonomic group, however, there was no uniform pattern in species responses to light fluctuations: both the magnitude and direction of response were species-specific. The temporal regime of light supply had a significant effect on the growth rates of individual species grown in monocultures. Species responses to the regime of light supply in monocultures qualitatively agreed with their abundances in the community experiments. The results indicate that the temporal regime of light supply may influence structure of phytoplankton communities by differentially affecting growth rates and mediating species competition. Batch cultures of the green microalga Chlorella vulgaris and cyanobacterium Planktothrix isothrix and their corresponding co-cultures were grown in municipal wastewater in order to study their growth as well as the nitrogen (NH4–N) and phosphorus (PO43−–P) removal. The cultures were grown under two irradiances of 20 and 60 μmol photons m−2 s−1 in shaken and unshaken conditions. The co-culture of unshaken Chlorella and Planktothrix showed the greatest growth under both irradiances. The monoalgal Planktotrix cultures showed better growth when unshaken than when shaken, whereas Chlorella cultures grew better when mixed, but only at the higher irradiance. The highest percentage of nitrogen removal (up to 80%) was attained by the unshaken co-cultures of Chlorella and Planktothrix. The amount of nitrogen recycled in the biomass reached up to 85% of that removed. Shaken monoalgal cultures of Chlorella showed phosphorus removal under both irradiances. They completely removed the initial phosphorus concentration (7.47 ± 0.17 mg L−1) within 96 and 48 h under 20 and 60 μmol photons m−2 s−1, respectively.  相似文献

The ability of spring barley (Hordeum vulgare cv. Akcent) to adjust the composition and function of the photosynthetic apparatus to growth irradiances of 25–1200 μmol m−2 s−1 was studied by gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence measurements and high-performance liquid chromatography. The increased growth irradiance stimulated light- and CO2-saturated rates of CO2 assimilation expressed on a leaf area basis up to 730 μmol m−2 s−1 (HL730), whereas at an irradiance of 1200 μmol m−2 s−1 (EHL1200) both rates decreased significantly. Further, the acclimation to EHL1200 was associated with an extremely high chlorophyll a/b ratio (3.97), a more than doubled xanthophyll cycle pool (VAZ) and a six-fold higher de-epoxidation state of the xanthophyll cycle pigments as compared to barley grown under 25 μmol m−2 s−1 (LL25). EHL1200 plants also exhibited a long-term inhibition of Photosystem II (PS II) photochemical efficiency (F v/F m). Photosynthetic capacity, chlorophyll a/b and VAZ revealed a linear trend of dependence on PS II excitation pressure in a certain range of growth irradiances (100–730 μmol m−2 s−1). The deviation from linearity of these relationships for EHL1200 barley is discussed. In addition, the role of increased VAZ and/or accumulation of zeaxanthin and antheraxanthin in acclimation of barley to high irradiance is studied with respect to regulation of non-radiative dissipation and/or photochemical efficiency within PS II. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Light acclimatisation capabilities of Elodea nuttallii at nearly ambient DIC conditions were investigated by determining growth characteristics, main photosynthetic parameters and pigmentation of plants incubated at 5 different irradiances (10–146 μmol photons m−2 s−1). Positive net growth was observed under all light treatments tested. Maximum ratio root versus shoot (r:s) of 1.86 was achieved at medium irradiances (72–94 μmol photons m−2 s−1), whereas at low (10 μmol photons m−2 s−1) and high irradiances (146 μmol photons m−2 s−1) r:s was significantly lower (0.39 and 1.05, respectively). With respect to main photosynthetic parameters, an increase of light compensation points (E c), attended by decreasing ratios of light saturation points of photosynthesis (E k)/irradiance were observed. E c values were comparable to other low-light adapted macrophytes, which indicate that E. nuttallii can be regarded as a low-light adapted plant, under photorespiratory conditions. This was also confirmed by maximum E k values of just 73 μmol photons m−2 s−1. Further support was achieved from pigmentation and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) data, both indicating rather limited acclimatisation ability at light treatments above 90 μmol photons m−2 s−1. These results are discussed with respect to the competitive abilities of E. nuttallii under nearly ambient (photorespiratory) DIC conditions, especially in dense stands and turbid phytoplankton-dominated waters.  相似文献

Using partially purified sedoheptulose-1,7-bisphosphatase from spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) chloroplasts the effects of metabolites on the dithiothreitoland Mg2+-activated enzyme were investigated. A screening of most of the intermediates of the Calvin cycle and the photorespiratory pathway showed that physiological concentrations of sedoheptulose-7-phosphate and glycerate specifically inhibited the enzyme by decreasing its maximal velocity. An inhibition by ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate was also found. The inhibitory effect of sedoheptulose-7-phosphate on the enzyme is discussed in terms of allowing a control of sedoheptulose-1,7-bisphosphate hydrolysis by the demand of the product of this reaction. Subsequent studies with partially purified fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase from spinach chloroplasts showed that glycerate also inhibited this enzyme. With isolated chloroplasts, glycerate was found to inhibit CO2 fixation by blocking the stromal fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase. It is therefore possible that the inhibition of the two phosphatases by glycerate is an important regulatory factor for adjusting the activity of the Calvin cycle to the ATP supply by the light reaction.Abbreviations DTT dithiothreitol - FBPase fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase - Fru-1,6-P2 fructose-1,6-bisphosphate - Fru-6-P fructose-6-phosphate - 3-PGA 3-phosphoglycerate - Ru-1,5-P2 ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate - Ru-5-P ribulose-5-phosphate - SBPase sedoheptulose-1,7-bisphosphatase - Sed-1,7-P2 sedoheptulose-1,7-bisphosphate - Sed-7-P sedoheptulose-7-phosphate This work was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemein-schaft.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate acclimation of micropropagated plants of Rhododendron ponticum subsp. baeticum to different irradiances and recovery after exposure to high irradiance. Plants grown under high (HL) or intermediate (IL) irradiances displayed higher values of maximum electron transport rate (ETRmax) and light saturation coefficient (Ek) than plants grown under low irradiance (LL). The capacity of tolerance to photoinhibition (as assessed by the response of photochemical quenching, qp) varied as follows: HL > IL > LL. Thermal energy dissipation (qN) was also affected by growth irradiance, with higher saturating values being observed in HL plants. Light-response curves suggested a gradual replacement of qp by qN with increasing irradiance. Following exposure to irradiance higher than 1500 μmol m−2 s−1, a prolonged reduction of the maximal photochemical efficiency of PS 2 (Fv/Fm) was observed in LL plants, indicating the occurrence of chronic photoinhibition. In contrary, the decrease in Fv/Fm was quickly reverted in HL plants, pointing to a reversible photoinhibition.  相似文献

Microstegium vimineum (Trin.) A. Camus, a shade-tolerant C4 grass, has spread throughout the eastern United States since its introduction in 1919. This species invades disturbed understory habitats along streambanks and surrounding mesic forests, and has become a major pest in areas such as Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The focus of this study was to characterize the photosynthetic induction responses of M. vimineum, specifically its ability to utilize low light and sunflecks, two factors that may be critical to invasive abilities and survival in the understory. In addition, we were curious about the ability of a grass with the C4 photosynthetic pathway to respond to sunflecks. Plants were grown under 25% and 50% ambient sunlight, and photosynthetic responses to both steady-state and variable light were determined. Plants grown in both 25% and 50% ambient sun became 90% light saturated between 750–850 μmol m−2 s−1; however, plants grown in 50% ambient sun had significantly higher maximum steady-state photosynthetic rates (16.09 ± 1.37 μmol m−2 s−1 vs. 12.71 ± 1.18 μmol m−2 s−1). Both groups of plants induced to 50% of the steady-state rate in 3–5 min, while it took 10–13 min to reach 90% of maximum rates, under both flashing and steady-state light. For both groups of plants, stomatal conductance during induction reached maximum rates in 6–7 min, after which rates decreased slightly. Upon return to low light, rates of induction loss and stomatal closure were very rapid in both groups of plants, but were more rapid in those grown in high light. Rapid induction and the ability to induce under flashing light may enable this species to invade and dominate mesic understory habitats, while rapid induction loss due to stomatal closure may prevent excess water loss when low light constrains photosynthesis. The C4 pathway itself does not appear to present an insurmountable barrier to the ability of this grass species to respond to sunflecks in an understory environment. Summary Caustis blakei is an attractive cut foliage plant harvested from the wild in Australia and marketed under the name of koala fern. Previous attempts to propagate large numbers of this plant have been unsuccessful. The effect of four light irradiances on organogenesis from compact and friable callus of C. blakei was studied for 21 wk. Both callus types produced numerous primordial shoots but many failed to develop into green plantlets. However, significantly more primordial shoots and green plantlets developed on the friable callus than on the compact callus, and significantly more green plantlets were regenerated under the higher photon irradiances of 200 and 300 μmol m−2s−1 than under the lower irradiances of 100 and 150 μmol m−2s−1. The compact callus produced its maximum number of green plantlets early in the experiment (after 9 wk), while the friable callus continued to produce primordial shoots and green plantelets throughout the period of the experiment, and reached its maximum production of green plantlets at 21 wk under the irradiance of 300 μmol m−2s−1. Organogenesis from friable callus under high irradiance (300 μmol m−2s−1) offers an efficient propagation method for C. blakei.  相似文献

Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Long John) plants were grown with photoperiods of 6 and 16 h at constant photon flux density (PFD), giving a daily photon receipt (DPR) of 17 and 48 mol · m−2 respectively. Vegetative growth was determined at regular intervals and diurnal whole-plant photosynthesis measured. Intact trifoliate leaves were exposed to photoinhibitory treatments at PFDs of 800 and 1400 μmol · m−2 · s−1 at temperatures of 14 and 20 °C, both in the absence and presence of the inhibitors chloramphenicol and dithiothreitol. Fluorescence and photon yields were determined at regular intervals throughout each treatment. Plants grown with photoperiods of 6 h had significantly lower growth rates than those grown with 16-h photoperiod but no difference in net photosynthetic rates or photon yields were found. Carbohydrate analyses confirmed short-day plants were strongly sink-limited. Long-day plants were slightly sink-limited, with a high proportion of starch in the leaves and reduced photosynthesis between 13 and 16 h. Plants grown in low DPR were more susceptible to photoinhibition, from sustained closure of some photosystem II reaction centres, than plants grown in high DPR. Capacity for thermal dissipation appeared dependent on PFD while photochemical capacity was more dependent on DPR. Received: 6 June 1997 / Accepted: 17 September 1997  相似文献

To quantify the importance of the Calvin cycle enzyme phosphoribulokinase (PRK) in photosynthesis and to perturb photosynthesis without large direct reductions in leaf protein content, tobacco plants (Nicotiana tabacum L.) were transformed with an inverted cDNA encoding tobacco PRK. A population of plants expressing antisense RNA and a range of PRK activities from wild-type to less than 5% of wild-type were obtained. CO2 assimilation under the growing conditions (330 µmol photons m?2 sec?1, 350 µbar CO2, 25°C) was not inhibited until more than 85% of PRK activity had been removed. With reduction in PRK activity of between 85 and 95%, assimilation rates and amounts of chlorophyll compared with wild-type were reduced by up to half. Decreased absorption of light by leaves with less chlorophyll accounte0d for only a small part of the reduction in assimilation rate. When PRK activity was below 15% of wild-type, amounts of ribulose-5-phosphate, ribose-5-phosphate, ATP and fructose-6-phosphate were 1.5- to fivefold higher and levels of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate, 3-phosphoglyceric acid and ADP 1.5- to fourfold lower than in wild-type. It is estimated that these changes maintained flux through PRK to realise the assimilation rates observed. A possible shift of control within the Calvin cycle towards fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase in plants with low PRK is discussed. Amounts of hexoses and starch in particular were reduced in plants expressing the lowest PRK activities; amounts of sucrose were little affected. Lower CO2 assimilation in plants with low PRK activity correlated with reduced relative growth rate of shoots and delayed flowering, but there was no effect on specific leaf area. It is concluded that (i) in wild-type plants grown in constant low light, PRK has a flux-control coefficient for CO2 assimilation of zero, and that even when amounts of PRK are reduced 20-fold relative to wild-type, altered amounts of metabolites compensate for much of the reduction in PRK protein; (ii) in plants where there is a 95% reduction in amounts of PRK, photosynthesis was reduced twofold without large changes in leaf protein content or leaf geometry.  相似文献

The effects of trigonelline (TRG) on the cell cycle in root meristems of Lactuca sativa L. were examined in the knowledge that TRG is a cell cycle regulator that causes cell arrest in G2, and prevents ligation of replicons in S-phase. The hypothesis was tested that continuous exposure to TRG would perturb DNA replication which, in turn, would lengthen the cell cycle and impair root elongation. Using DNA fibre autoradiography, mean replicon size was 31 and 13 μm in the TRG (3 mM) and control treatments, respectively. Trigonelline also resulted in a lengthening of both S-phase and the cell cycle and a decrease in primary root elongation. Hence, replicon inactivation was responsible for the protracted S-phase. Trigonelline treatment also resulted in a 1.6-fold increase in fork rate (13.8 μm h−1) compared with the control (8.4 m h−1). The faster fork rate in the larger replicons is in accord with the highly significant positive relationship already established between fork rate and replicon size for various unrelated higher plants. Eco-physiological responses of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria to light   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The eco-physiological responses of three nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria (N-fixing cyanobacteria), Aphanizomenon gracile, Anabaena minderi, and Ana. torques-reginae, to light were assessed under nutrient saturation. The N-fixing cyanobacteria were isolated into monocultures from a natural bloom in a shallow colored lake and their growth irradiance parameters and pigment composition were assessed. The different ecological traits related to light use (μmax, α, I k) suggest that these N-fixing cyanobacteria are well adapted to low light conditions at sufficient nutrients, yet interspecific differences were observed. Aphanizomenon gracile and Anabaena minderi had high relative growth rates at low irradiances (ca. 70% of those in high light), low half saturation constant for light-limited growth (I k < 9.09 μmol photon m−2 s−1) and high efficiency (α < 0.11 day−1 μmol photon−1 m2 s). Conversely, Ana. torques-reginae showed poorer light competitiveness: low relative growth rates at low irradiances (ca. 40% of those in high light), low α (0.009 day−1 μmol photon−1 m2 s) and higher I k (35.5 μmol photon m−2 s−1). Final densities in Aphanizomenon gracile and Anabaena minderi reached bloom densities at irradiances above 30 μmol photon m−2 s−1 with different hierarchy depending on irradiance, whereas Ana. torques-reginae never achieved bloom densities. All species had very low densities at irradiances ≤17 μmol photon m−2 s−1, thus no N-fixing blooms would be expected at these irradiances. Also, under prolonged darkness and at lowest irradiance (0 and 3 μmol photon m−2 s−1) akinetes were degraded, suggesting that in ecosystems with permanently dark sediments, the prevalence of N-fixing cyanobacteria should not be favored. All species displayed peaks of phycocyanin, but no phycoeritrin, probably due to the prevailing red light in the ecosystem from which they were isolated.  相似文献

Gas-exchange measurements were performed to analyze the leaf conductances and assimilation rates of potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Desireé) plants expressing an antisense construct against chloroplastic fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (FBPase, EC 3.1.3.11) in response to increasing photon flux densities, different relative air humidities and elevated CO2 concentrations. Assimilation rates (A) and transpiration rates (E) were observed during a stepwise increase of photon flux density. These experiments were carried out under atmospheric conditions and in air containing 500 μmol mol−1 CO2. In both gas atmospheres, two levels of relative air humidity (60–70% and 70–80%) were applied in different sets of measurements. Intercellular CO2 concentration, leaf conductance, air-to-leaf vapour pressure deficit, and instantaneous water-use efficiency (A/E) were determined. As expected, assimilation rates of the FBPase antisense plants were significantly reduced as compared to the wild type. Saturation of assimilation rates in transgenic plants occurred at a photon flux density of 200 μmol m−2 s−1, whereas saturation in wild type plants was observed at 600 μmol m−2 s−1. Elevated ambient CO2 levels did not effect assimilation rates of transgenic plants. At 70–80% relative humidity and atmospheric CO2 concentration the FBPase antisense plants had significantly higher leaf conductances than wild-type plants while no difference emerged at 60–70%. These differences in leaf conductance vanished at elevated levels of ambient CO2. Stomatal response to different relative air humidities was not affected by mesophyll photosynthetic activity. It is suggested that the regulation of stomatal opening upon changes in photon flux density is merely mediated by a signal transmitted from mesophyll cells, whereas the intercellular CO2 concentration plays a minor role in this kind of stomatal response. The results are discussed with respect to stomatal control by environmental parameters and mesophyll photosynthesis. Received: 24 September 1998 / Accepted: 9 February 1999  相似文献

The effects of temperature, irradiance, and daylength on Sargassum horneri growth were examined at the germling and adult stages to discern their physiological differences. Temperature–irradiance (10, 15, 20, 25, 30°C × 20, 40, 80 μmol photons m−2s−1) and daylength (8, 12, 16, 24 h) experiments were carried out. The germlings and blades of S. horneri grew over a wide range of temperatures (10–25°C), irradiances (20–80 μmol photons m−2s−1), and daylengths (8–24 h). At the optimal growth conditions, the relative growth rates (RGR) of the germlings were 21% day−1 (25°C, 20 μmol photons m−2s−1) and 13% day−1 (8 h daylength). In contrast, the RGRs of the blade weights were 4% day−1 (15°C, 20 μmol photons m−2s−1) and 5% day−1 (12 h daylength). Negative growth rates were found at 20 μmol photons m−2s−1 of 20°C and 25°C treatments after 12 days. This phenomenon coincides with the necrosis of S. horneri blades in field populations. In conclusion, we found physiological differences between S. horneri germlings and adults with respect to daylength and temperature optima. The growth of S. horneri germlings could be enhanced at 25°C, 20 μmol photons m−2s−1, and 8 h daylength for construction of Sargassum beds and restoration of barren areas.  相似文献

The effects of irradiance and photoperiod on growth rates, chlorophyll a, β-carotene, total protein, and fatty acid content of Chlorella vulgaris were determined. The maximum growth rate (1.13 day−1) was at 100 μmol photons m−2 s−1 and 16:8-h light/dark photoperiod. Chlorophyll a and β-carotene contents significantly differed under different light regimes with chlorophyll a content lower at high irradiance and longer light duration, while β-carotene showed the inverse trend. The total protein and fatty acid content also significantly differed in different light regimes; the maximum percentage of protein (46%) was at 100 μmol photons m−2 s−1 and 16:8 h photoperiod, and minimum (33%) was at 37.5 μmol photons m−2 s−1 and 8:16 h photoperiod; the total saturated fatty acids increased, while monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids decreased with increasing irradiance and light duration.  相似文献

Unlike northern hemisphere conifer families, the southern family, Podocarpaceae, produces a great variety of foliage forms ranging from functionally broad-, to needle-leaved. The production of broad photosynthetic surfaces in podocarps has been linked qualitatively to low-light-environments, and we undertook to assess the validity of this assumption by measuring the light response of a morphologically diverse group of podocarps. The light response, as apparent photochemical electron transport rate (ETR), was measured by modulated fluorescence in ten species of this family and six associated species (including five Cupressaceae and one functionally needle-leaved angiosperm) all grown under identical glasshouse conditions. In all species, ETR was found to increase as light intensity increased, reaching a peak value (ETRmax) at saturating quantum flux (PPFDsat), and decreasing thereafter. ETRmax ranged from 217 μmol electrons · m−2 · s−1 at a PPFDsat of 1725 μmol photons · m−2 · s−1 in Actinostrobus acuminatus to an ETR of 60 μmol electrons · m−2 · s−1 at a PPFDsat of 745 μmol electrons · m−2 · s−1 in Podocarpus dispermis. Good correlations were observed between ETRmax and both PPFDsat and maximum assimilation rate measured by gas-exchange analysis. The effective quantum yield at light saturation remained constant in all species with an average value of 0.278 ± 0.0035 determined for all 16 species. Differences in the shapes of light response curves were related to differences in the response of non-photochemical quenching (q n), with q n saturating faster in species with low PPFDsat. Amongst the species of Podocarpaceae, the log of average shoot width was well correlated with PPFDsat, wider leaves saturating at lower light intensities. This suggests that broadly flattened shoots in the Podocarpaceae are an adaptation to low light intensity. Received: 15 April 1996 / Accepted: 30 September 1996  相似文献
