Field-collected Heliconius cydno Doubleday females were observed producing audible wing clicks during encounters between conspecifics in greenhouses in a large insectary during the day and at roosting time. Occasionally, these females also were observed producing sounds in aggressive encounters with females of a close relative, H. erato (L). However, the wing-clicks were not observed subsequently from first-generation adults born in the greenhouses. The sounds were produced in short trains of 3–10 wing-clicks at the rate of 10 clicks/s. The individual clicks had a mean duration of 1.48 ms and a broad frequency spectrum, with a peak near 1075 Hz. This peak lies near the 1200-Hz frequency of maximal sensitivity measured previously for auditory neurons of H. erato. The production of these previously unreported sounds suggests that wing clicks may play a role in both intra- and interspecific communication among Heliconius species.  相似文献

Gap junctions between insect oocytes and follicular epithelial cells allow transit of elongate Ca(2+)-binding proteins Calmodulin (CaM, 17kDa) and Troponin-C (Trop-C, 18kDa), but not multi-branched dextran (10kDa) nor the Ca(2+)-binding protein Osteocalcin (Osteo, 6kDa). By microinjection of fluorescently labeled versions of each of these molecules we were able to obtain visual evidence that, despite their lesser molecular weight, molecules with greater cross-sections were unable to transit these gap junctions, while heavier but elongate molecules could. While CaM had previously been shown to pass through gap junctions from oocytes to their surrounding epithelial cells, the ability of CaM and Trop-C to transit the gap junctions between adjacent epithelial cells had not been demonstrated. Evidence shown here demonstrates that the homologous gap junctions among epithelial cells, like the heterologous gap junctions between epithelial cells and the oocyte they surround, allow transit of elongate molecules up to at least 18kDa. Furthermore, the evidence for four different molecules of differing molecular weights and configurations supports the hypothesis that it is molecular configuration, not chemical activity, that primarily determines the observed permeability of gap junctions to molecules 5-6 times larger than the molecular weight limit previously acknowledged.  相似文献

Olfaction plays an important role in the social communication of all prosimians. (The experiment reported in this paper forms part of an intensive chemobehavioral study of olfaction in Lemur catta (ring-tailed lemur) being carried out in this laboratory.) Five male Lemur cattawere tested on their behavioral responses to paired scent stimuli. Responses measured were (1) total investigation time, (2) arm-marking, (3) ABO/BO rubbing, and (4) flehmen. Males showed a strong discrimination between the scent stimuli, giving higher levels of response to female scent on measures 1, 3, and 4. This response suggests an olfactory-related preference by males for female scent under controlled conditions. This preference may be a consequence of the females’ dominance over males and the brevity of estrus in L. catta, both of which would favor such choice behavior.  相似文献

Summary A conspicuous, rhythmic rocking behavior (jigging) in the fungus-growing ant Cyphomyrmex costatus is described with the help of high-speed videotaping. The ants are known to perform this behavior in their nest, but the cause and function of jigging has so far remained unclear. This study tested one cause of this behavior: if it is triggered by collembolan invaders that feed on the ants fungal garden, as hypothesized by Weber in 1957. Two experiments were conducted. The first experiment surveyed jigging rates in colonies infected with Collembola and in colonies free of Collembola. The rate of jigging was significantly higher in the colonies with Collembola. In the second experiment, to show causation of jigging by Collembola, a series of single ants were isolated with garden fragments from their colonies and jigging was scored in the presence or absence of Collembola. Again jigging was significantly higher in the presence of the added Collembola, whereas no jigging was observed in the ants kept without Collembola. The experiments therefore support Webers hypothesis that the presence of Collembola can trigger jigging. However, because jigging was also observed in colonies without Collembola, it cannot be the sole cause of the behavior, and other causes need to be investigated. In addition, the function of jigging in the presence and absence of Collembola also needs to be investigated.Received 25 February 2003; revised 6 October 2003; accepted 5 November 2003.  相似文献

Vocalizations and corresponding behavior patterns were recorded inGalago demidovii (Lorisidae), Microcebus murinus, andCheirogaleus medius (Cheirogaleidae). Physical characteristics of the calls were analyzed and calls correlated with their behavioral context. Based on these correlations an «advertisement» call can be identified in all three species. Interspecific comparison suggest that within the Prosimian suborder there are at least two different evolutionary pathways in the organization of this call and of the vocal repertoires in general. The Lorisid speciesG. demidovii conveys acoustic information mainly in pulsed calls, leading to an extreme amplitude-modulation. Individual characteristics are in temporal patterns of calls.C. medius andM. murinus, the Cheirogaleid species, use tonal calls and encode individual characteristics in frequency patterns. Despite the fundamental similarity in the call-structure of the two Cheirogaleid species different adaptations can be found to meet different ecological needs.  相似文献

Many terrestrial mammals scent mark in areas containing the scent marks of conspecifics, and thus, may deposit their own scent marks on top of those that were deposited previously by conspecifics. This phenomenon, known as over-marking appears to play a role in same-sex competition or mate attraction. The present study determines whether meadow and prairie voles avoid over-marking the scent marks of conspecifics, target the scent marks of conspecifics and over-mark them, or randomly over-mark the scent marks of conspecifics. The data show that meadow and prairie voles adjust the number and location of scent marks that they deposit in areas marked previously by particular conspecifics. Male and female meadow and prairie voles target the scent marks of opposite-sex conspecifics and over-mark them. Female meadow and prairie voles also target the scent marks of female conspecifics. In contrast, male meadow and prairie voles over-mark the scent marks of male conspecifics in a random manner. By differentially over-marking the scent marks of conspecifics, voles may be able to communicate particular information to a variety of conspecifics.  相似文献

A set of hydrophilic fluorescent dyes of known molecular weight has been used to determine the molecular exclusion limit and the extent of apical, epidermal and cortical symplasts in the root, stem and leaf of Egeria densa. These dyes are unable to pass the plasmalemma, so that any cell-to-cell movement of injected dye must occur via the symplast. The shoot-apex symplast has a high molecular exclusion limit, excluding dyes with a molecular weight of 749 dalton (fluorescein hexaglycine) and greater but allowing dyes of up to 665 dalton (fluorescein diglutamic acid) to pass. The leaf epidermal symplast is similar to that in the apex: fluorescein pentaglycine (674 dalton) moves to a limited extent, but fluorescein hexaglycine is immobile. Stem and root epidermal cells have a lower molecular exclusion limit, only the dye 6-carboxyfluorescein (376 dalton) is able to move from cell-to-cell. Cortical and epidermal tissues in both the stem and the root have similar symplast permeabilities. However, a barrier to dye (6-carboxyfluorescein) movement is found between the epidermis and the cortex in both organs. Barriers are also found at the nodes between expanded internodes. The stem barriers are not found in the unexpanded nodes near the shoot tip; apparently they are formed early during internode expansion. In the root tip, a barrier to the movement of dye is found between the root cap and the remainder of the root. Plasmodesmata are found linking all cell types studied, even cells where barriers to dye movement occur. Thus, the plant, far from being one uniform symplast, consists of a large number of symplast domains, which may or may not differ in molecular exclusion limit.Abbreviations F fluorescein isothiocyanate isomer I - Glu l-glutamic acid - (Glu)2 l-glutamylglutamic acid - (Gly)5 l-pentaglycine - (Gly)6 l-hexaglycine  相似文献

Summary The effect of azide on the diffusion of fluorescent molecular probes was examined in staminal hairs ofSetcreasea purpurea. Staminal hairs were treated with azide before being microinjected with fluorescent molecular probes of different size, charge, and structure. The cell-to-cell movement of these fluorescent molecules was videotaped, analyzed, and coefficients of diffusion through plasmodesmata (D) and coefficients of diffusion across the tonoplast (k1) were calculated and compared to those of untreated cells. The D was larger and the k1 was smaller for many fluorescent probes in azide treated cells compared to normal, untreated cells. In addition, the cell-to-cell diffusion selectivity based on molecule structure, size and charge no longer existed in azide treated cells. An average D of 3.3×10–8cm2/s and an average k1 of 2.9×10–7/m2/s was calculated for the molecular probes tested. New size limits for permeation were observed indicating that the plasmodesmata had become enlarged.Abbreviations CF carboxyfluorescein - D diffusion coefficient for molecular probes in intercellular pores - FITC-Ang fluorescein isothiocyanate-angiotensin II - k1 coefficient of diffusive loss across the tonoplast  相似文献

Summary Group recruitment during foraging was observed in a primitive ponerine ant,Amblyopone sp. (reclinata group) under laboratory condition. Workers searched for prey singly; however, if a item of prey was stung by a worker, other ants joined the attack. After the prey became immobile, one of the workers laid a trail directly toward the nest. This scout worker recruited additional workers (between 3 and 33). They formed a single file procession to the point of prey capture, and cooperatively transported the prey. A scout worker could stimulate nest workers to leave the nest without direct contact, and the recruited workers could trace the trail without guidance by the scout worker. This is the first report of recruitment behavior during foraging in the primitive antAmblyopone.  相似文献

Systematic studies on facial displays in capuchins are limited and based mainly on studies of tufted capuchins (Cebus apella). Despite the great social-morphological variability within Cebus suggesting possible morphological and functional variations in the facial displays of different species, no study has considered thoroughly visual communication in the genus. Our aim was to describe the facial displays of white-faced capuchins and to assess their distribution and communicative function. We observed 15 captive white-faced capuchins in the Primate Centre of the Louis Pasteur University of Strasbourg, for a total of 198 h. We described the following facial displays: relaxed open-mouth, lip-smacking, open-mouth threat-face, silent bared-teeth, open-mouth silent bared-teeth, protruded-lip face, and tongue-out. We never observed the scalp-lifting display, one of the most common displays characterizing tufted capuchins. White-faced capuchins use the majority of facial displays in an affiliative or playful context; only the open-mouth threat-face display is associated with aggressive behaviors. White-faced capuchins lack ritualized signals of submission. The fact that in white-faced capuchins the silent bared-teeth display conveys only a positive message, while in tufted capuchins it signals submission as well as affiliation, supports the covariation hypothesis (Thierry 2004 Social epigenesis. Many social insect species that employ directional recruitment to food finds communicate the location of their targets with seemingly needless imprecision. Here we present evidence that the spatial precision of the honey bees' dance communication has been tuned by selection so that recruits are neither so accurate that they usually find areas which have already been depleted nor so inaccurate that they usually fail to find the advertised resources altogether. First, the bees' distance errors are similar in magnitude to their directional errors, and their angular errors decrease greatly with increasing distance to the target (decreasing more than fourfold between 100 and 700 m). As a result, the absolute scatter of recruits remains relatively constant with changing distance to the target (increasing by less than 50% between 100 and 700 m). This is to be expected if the optimal level of imprecision is the same for distance and direction and does not change with the distance of the target from the nest. Second, comparative studies involving three tropical- and one temperate-zone species (all Apis)suggest that the precision of the bees' languages may have been tuned in accordance with the spatial characteristics of the resources each species uses. We suggest that both the round dance, which conveys no directional information for nearby targets, and the high angular divergence in waggle dances indicating targets within several hundred meters of the colony are both understandable in this context.  相似文献

Summary Investigations into plant intercellular communication were initiated through an examination of plasmodesmata and cell-to-cell passage of molecular probes in the staminal hairs ofSetcreasea purpurea. Plasmodesmata connecting staminal hair cells of small buds are filled with an electron-opaque homogenous material. To examine the permeation selectivity of plasmodesmata, molecular probes made up of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) complexed with amino acids and peptides were injected into the staminal hair cells and the spread of these fluorescent molecules through the symplast, was monitored. Molecules composed of FITC complexed to single amino acids with polar and aliphatic R groups travel rapidly, while those which include peptides travel slowly. Dye molecules composed of an amino acid with an aromatic side group do not pass from cell to cell at all. It is hypothesized that the material occluding the plasmodesmata constitutes the diffusion barrier, by presenting a hydrophilic environment which allows passage of molecules with maximum molecular weights of 700–800 daltons, but which retains those with aromatic side groups.  相似文献

Urine washing (UW) is taxonomically widespread among strepsirhines and platyrrhines, yet its functional significance is still unclear. We used 2274 h of focal follows of 35 adult and subadult wild white-faced capuchins (Cebus capucinus) to test 1) the intergroup signaling, intragroup social signaling, and thermoregulatory hypotheses for UW and 2) the hypothesis that individuals sniff each other's urine and other traces to gather socially significant information. Males engaged in significantly more UW than females. All 5 α-males engaged in more UW than subordinate males did, including 4 α-males that increased their UW rate above that of their male groupmates after their rise to α rank. Males engaged in significantly less UW while in view of other males than at other times. Male-male sniffing rates do not correlate with either aggression rate or dominance rank distance. Urine washing rates did not increase while subjects were in parts of their home range where more intergroup encounters occurred. Urine washing rates were highest early in the morning and late in the afternoon, presumably when temperatures were coolest. The data do not support either the thermoregulatory or social signaling hypothesis. We suggest that experiments with captive capuchins are necessary to resolve the issue of the function of urine washing in the taxon.  相似文献

The visitation pattern by worker honey bees to cells in the brood nest was monitored on an artificially created brood pattern consisting of about one-fourth brood cells evenly distributed among empty cells. The majority (63 %) of the observed workers selectively entered larval cells. In contrast, some workers avoided egg cells when presented a choice of egg vs empty cells. The results suggest that larvae produce a general signal indicating their presence to worker bees. Eggs also seem to produce a signal, which is perceived to be different from the one from larvae.  相似文献

The genome of Corynebacterium glutamicum ATCC 13032 contains two genes, rpf1 and rpf2, encoding proteins with similarities to the essential resuscitation-promoting factor (Rpf) of Micrococcus luteus. Both the Rpf1 (20.4 kDa) and Rpf2 (40.3 kDa) proteins share the so-called Rpf motif, a highly conserved protein domain of approximately 70 amino acids, which is also present in Rpf-like proteins of other gram-positive bacteria with a high G+C content of the chromosomal DNA. Purification of the C. glutamicum Rpf2 protein from concentrated supernatants, SDS-PAGE and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry identified modified Rpf2 variants with increased or reduced mobility when compared with the calculated size of Rpf2. A Western blot-based enzyme immunoassay demonstrated glycosylation of the Rpf2 variants with higher molecular masses. Galactose and mannose were identified as two components of the oligosaccharide portion of the Rpf2 glycoprotein by capillary gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The Rpf2 protein was localized on the surface of C. glutamicum with the use of immuno-fluorescence microscopy. C. glutamicum strains with defined deletions in the rpf1 or rpf2 gene or simultaneous deletions in both rpf genes were constructed, indicating that the rpf genes are neither individually nor collectively essential for C. glutamicum. The C. glutamicum rpf double mutant displayed slower growth and a prolonged lag phase after transfer of long-stored cells into fresh medium. The addition of supernatant from exponentially growing cultures of the rpf double mutant, the wild type or C. glutamicum strains with increased expression of the rpf1 or rpf2 gene significantly reduced the lag phase of long-stored wild-type and rpf single mutant strains, but addition of purified His-tagged Rpf1 or Rpf2 did not. In contrast, the lag phase of the C. glutamicum rpf double mutant was not affected upon addition of these culture supernatants.  相似文献

Life history traits of Daphnia galeata clones were affected differently by kairomones exuded by two species of fish. The exposure to Gasterosteus kairomone resulted in an increase in population intrinsic rate of increase and body growth rate relative to the exposure to Perca kairomone. These differences between fish treatments have not been reported earlier. The results suggest differences between fish kairomones that are not due to concentration effects alone. This raises the possibility that kairomones are cocktails of chemicals rather than a single `fish substance'. It also supports the view the effects of size-selective predation vary depending on the local predator–prey assemblage examined. This finding leads to an additional, previously underestimated but potentially complex aspect in zooplankton ecology.  相似文献
