Variation in the timing of plant phenology caused by phenotypic plasticity is a sensitive measure of how organisms respond to weather and climate variability. Although continental-scale gradients in climate and consequential patterns in plant phenology are well recognized, the contribution of underlying genotypic difference to the geography of phenology is less well understood. We hypothesize that different temperate plant genotypes require varying amount of heat energy for resuming annual growth and reproduction as a result of adaptation and other ecological and evolutionary processes along climatic gradients. In particular, at least for some species, the growing degree days (GDD) needed to trigger the same spring phenology events (e.g., budburst and flower bloom) may be less for individuals originated from colder climates than those from warmer climates. This variable intrinsic heat energy requirement in plants can be characterized by the term growth efficiency and is quantitatively reflected in the timing of phenophases—earlier timing indicates higher efficiency (i.e., less heat energy needed to trigger phenophase transitions) and vice versa compared to a standard reference (i.e., either a uniform climate or a uniform genotype). In this study, we tested our hypothesis by comparing variations of budburst and bloom timing of two widely documented plants from the USA National Phenology Network (i.e., red maple-Acer rubrum and forsythia-Forsythia spp.) with cloned indicator plants (lilac-Syringa x chinensis ‘Red Rothomagensis’) at multiple eastern US sites. Our results indicate that across the accumulated temperature gradient, the two non-clonal plants showed significantly more gradual changes than the cloned plants, manifested by earlier phenology in colder climates and later phenology in warmer climates relative to the baseline clone phenological response. This finding provides initial evidence supporting the growth efficiency hypothesis, and suggests more work is warranted. More studies investigating genotype-determined phenological variations will be useful for better understanding and prediction of the continental-scale patterns of biospheric responses to climate change.  相似文献

Heat and cold tolerances were determined for 13 clones of the commonly cultivated potato, Solanum tuberosum L. Five clones were considered to be adapted to warm climates and the others to cool climates only in terms of their ability to produce tubers. The decrease in the rate of the induced rise in chlorophyll fluorescence after heating leaves at 41°C for 10 min was used to measure relative heat tolerance, and the decrease following chilling at 0°C was used to measure relative cold tolerance. The warm-adapted clones all showed enhanced heat tolerance compared with the cool-adapted clones. Higher heat tolerance was also correlated with a greater tolerance towards a cold stress of 0°C and it is suggested that the warm-adapted clones were selections showing an increased generalized capacity to withstand environmental stresses of several kinds rather than a specific genotypic adaptation to tolerate warm temperatures. Heat and cold tolerances were also determined for several other species of potato cultivated in the Andean region of South America. Of these, S. phureja, which is found at low altitudes on the eastern slopes of the Andes, showed a tolerance to heat comparable to that of the warm-adapted clones of the common potato, the two most heat tolerant of which contained some phureja in their parentage. Diploid and triploid species of cultivated potatoes were considerably more cold tolerant than the clones of the common potato, a tetraploid. The genetic variability for heat and cold tolerance in cultivated and wild potatoes is discussed in relation to increasing the tolerance of the potato to these stresses.  相似文献

Telenomus fariai Lima ranges from Argentina and Chile to Mexico; some ecological parameters and morphological characters were compared between tropical (Costa Rica) and temperate (Argentina) populations, as reared on tropical and temperate hosts. The results of the 4 combinations between the 2 parasite populations and the 2 host species (Triatoma phyllosoma pallidipennis Stal) andTriatoma infestans Klug) [Hym.: Reduviidae] showed that only the parasite's geographical origin was statistically significant when evaluated through adult female life expectancy at time of emergence from the host, development time, total progeny per host per female 0–24 h old, and generation time. No difference was found between parasite populations with respect to total progeny per female and net reproductive rate. The morphometry proved statistically significant for all body measurements except the antennae.  相似文献

A model for predicting inter-animal radiant heat exchange in shaded animals is presented, with emphasis on mature cattle. When a cow’s surface temperature is 35 °C, as is common in warmer climates, it loses ~510 Watt m?2 as radiant heat. Net radiant heat balance depends on radiation coming from bodies in the vicinity. In the 30 °C radiant temperature shaded environment typical of warm climates, net radiant loss from a lactating cow is ~60 Watt m?2, i.e., 30 % of its ~173 Watt m?2 heat production. Cows rest for 8–14 h day?1. The heat exchange of a lying cow differs from that of a standing one: the body center is low and 20–30 % of its surface contacts a surface of relatively low heat conductance. Lying reduces the impact of the surrounding shaded area on heat exchange but increases that of heat radiating from neighboring cows. When a cow rests adjacent to other cows, with 1.25 m between body centers when in stalls, it occupies about 140° of the horizontal plane of view. Heat emitted from the animal’s surface reduces the net radiant heat loss of a resting cow by ~30 Watt m?2. In contrast, the presence of cows at 5 and 10 m distance, e.g., cows resting on straw in loose yard housing, reduces the net radiant heat loss of the resting cow by 9 and 5 Watt m?2, respectively. Radiant heat input increases with animal density, which is beneficial in cooler climates, but acts as a stressor in warm climates.  相似文献

We used eight microsatellite loci and a set of 20 aphid samples to investigate the spatial and temporal genetic structure of rosy apple aphid populations from 13 apple orchards situated in four different regions in France. Genetic variability was very similar between orchard populations and between winged populations collected before sexual reproduction in the fall and populations collected from colonies in the spring. A very small proportion of individuals (~2%) had identical multilocus genotypes. Genetic differentiation between orchards was low (F(ST)<0.026), with significant differentiation observed only between orchards from different regions, but no isolation by distance was detected. These results are consistent with high levels of genetic mixing in holocyclic Dysaphis plantaginae populations (host alternation through migration and sexual reproduction). These findings concerning the adaptation of the rosy apple aphid have potential consequences for pest management.  相似文献

Elkhorn coral, Acropora palmata, relies heavily on clonal propagation and often displays low genotypic (clonal) diversity. Populations in the Florida Keys experienced rapid declines in tissue cover between 2004 and 2006, largely due to hurricanes and disease, but remained stable from 2006 to 2010. All elkhorn colonies in 150 m2 permanent study plots were genotyped in 2006 (n = 15 plots) and 2010 (n = 24 plots), and plots sampled in both years were examined for changes in allelic and genotypic diversity during this period of stable ecological abundance. Overall, genetic diversity of Florida plots was low and declined further over the 4-yr period; seven of the 36 original genets and two of 67 alleles (among five microsatellite loci) were lost completely from the sampled population, and an additional 15 alleles were lost from individual reefs. In 2010, Florida plots (~19 colonies) contained an average of 2.2 ± 1.38 (mean ± SD) genets with a significant negative correlation between colony abundance and genotypic diversity. When scaled to total tissue abundance, genotypic diversity is even lower, with 43 % of genets below the size of sexual maturity. We examined the hypothesized positive relationship of local genotypic diversity with ecological performance measures. In Florida plots (n = 15), genotypic diversity was not significantly correlated with tissue loss associated with chronic predation, nor with acute disease and storm-fragmentation events, though this relationship may be obscured by the low range of observed diversity and potential confounding with abundance. When more diverse plots in Curaçao (n = 9) were examined, genotypic diversity was not significantly correlated with resistance during an acute storm disturbance or rate of recovery following disturbance. Cryptic loss of genetic diversity occurred in the apparently stable Florida population and confirms that stable or even increasing abundance does not necessarily indicate genetic stability.  相似文献

Inducing the sexual forms and hatching the eggs of pea aphids   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In temperate climates, pea aphids (Acyrthosiphon pisum) produce a single sexual generation each year in response to declining photoperiod and temperature. Mating occurs in the fall and the eggs have an obligatory winter diapause. Genetic recombination during the sexual phase is thought to be an important source of genetic variability within cyclically parthenogenetic aphid populations. Methods for reliably producing sexual forms and hatching the eggs of aphids are therefore central not only to the study of evolutionary change in aphid populations, but also for a general understanding of the origin of agriculturally important variation in destructiveness within pest species. Here, sexual forms of six pea aphid clones were induced in the laboratory and eggs were successfully hatched by creating conditions that closely mimicked those found in field situations. A declining photoperiod was produced by controlling artificial lighting using a timer with variable cycle length. Using these conditions, sexual forms were successfully produced for all six clones tested, which were then mated in all combinations. Eggs were exposed to a daily cycle of freezing and thawing in an incubator under a short-day photoperiod. Egg hatch averaged 60%, but was as high as 89% for some crosses. These methods will permit testing of evolutionary hypotheses and execution of detailed genetic studies of sources of variability within pea aphid populations. They are thus important tools for both evolutionary and agricultural studies.  相似文献

Soils high in magnesium derived from ultramafic rocks (serpentine, peridotite, and dunite) in northwestern United States support endemic as well as wide-ranging but edaphically indifferent(bodenvag) species. The latter occur widely on diverse rock formations of the region. Severalbodenvag species are shown to respond ecotypically to ultramafic soils. Of 18 species tested, all but three are differentiated into strains either tolerant or intolerant of ultramafic soils. Tests for edaphic preferences were conducted with seedlings and mature transplants on ultramafic soils. Growth performances were determined in greenhouse pot tests, outdoor soil bins, and by transplants in the wild. Herbaceous perennials (e.g.,Achillea millefolium, Fragaria virginiana, Prunella vulgaris, Rumex acetosella) gave the clearest ecotypic differences. Woody species either showed only slight ecotypic response(Spiraea douglasii var.menziesii andGaultheria shallon) or delayed the expression of their genotypic adaptability(Pinus contorta). Where ultramafic abut non-ultramafic soils, those populations ofbodenvag species that grow in non-ultramafic habitats can have a significant proportion of individuals tolerant to ferromagnesian soils (e.g.,Achillea millefolium). This suggests gene flow between populations of contrasting edaphic sites and possibly preadaptedness for the ultramafic habitat. Strains of two introduced weeds(Prunella vulgaris andRumex acetosella) have become ecotypically tolerant to ultramafic soils, probably within the last 75 years.  相似文献

1. To explore the possible causes of apparent changes in reproductive mode from obligate to cyclical parthenogenesis over time in recombinant clones of the aphid Sitobion avenae Fabricius, all F1 progenies from various crosses were tested for several consecutive years for sexual morph production, after several weeks' exposure to a short photoperiod. 2. Variable proportions of the F1 progenies from selfing and outcrossing holocyclic clones did not produce mating females when induction was attempted in the year of hatching, but only after further induction, the following year or after. This ‘delayed setting of the photoperiodic response’ (DSPR) was much stronger in recombinants from crosses involving only clones from oceanic regions than in those involving one clone from a region with a continental climate. 3. F1 progenies resulting from crosses between one holocyclic and one intermediate clone did not show DSPR. It appeared again in the F2. 4. DSPR preferentially affected the latest hatched clones in a given progeny. 5. This phenomenon is neither an experimental artefact nor as a result of clone contamination. It appears to be because of a genetically controlled quantitative trait affecting the length of the ‘interval timer’, and may represent an adaptation of holocyclic aphid clones from oceanic regions to unpredictable winter climates.  相似文献

Many boreal and temperate forest tree species distributed across large geographic ranges are composed of populations adapted to the climate they inhabit. Forestry provenance studies and common gardens provide evidence of local adaptation to climate when associations between fitness traits and the populations'' home climates are observed. Most studies that evaluate tree height as a fitness trait do so at a specific point in time. In this study, we elucidate differences in early growth patterns in black walnut (Juglans nigra L.) populations by modeling height growth from seed up to age 11. The data comprise tree height measurements between ages 2 and 11 for 52 natural populations of black walnut collected through its geographic range and planted in one or more of 3 common gardens. We use the Chapman–Richards growth model in a mixed effects framework and test whether populations differ in growth patterns by incorporating populations'' home climate into the model. In addition, we evaluate differences in populations'' absolute growth and relative growth based on the fitted model. Models indicated that populations from warmer climates had the highest cumulative growth through time, with differences in average tree height between populations from home climates with a mean annual temperature (MAT) of 13°C and of 7°C estimated to be as high as 80% at age 3. Populations from warmer climates were also estimated to have higher and earlier maximum absolute growth rate than populations from colder climates. In addition, populations from warm climates were predicted to have higher relative growth rates at any given tree size. Results indicate that natural selection may shape early growth patterns of populations within a tree species, suggesting that fast early growth rates are likely selected for in relatively mild environments where competition rather than tolerance to environmental stressors becomes the dominant selection pressure.  相似文献

Background and aims

Noccaea caerulescens is a model plant for the understanding of trace metal accumulation and a source of cultivars for phytoextraction. The aim of this study was to investigate natural variation for trace metal accumulation, major nutrient uptake and growth parameters in 22 populations. The correlations among these traits were particularly examined to better understand the eco-physiology and the phytoextraction potential of the species.

Methods

Populations from three edaphic groups, i.e. calamine (CAL), serpentine (SERP) and non metalliferous (NMET) sites were grown in hydroponics for seven weeks at moderate trace metal exposure. Growth indicators, element contents and correlations between these variables were compared.

Results

All the phenotypic characteristics showed a wide variability among groups and populations. The SERP populations showed a smaller plant size, higher cation contents and strong correlations between all element concentrations. NMET populations did not differ in plant size from the CAL ones, but had higher Zn and Ni contents. The CAL populations showed higher Cd and Mn accumulations and lower Ca contents. The trade-off between biomass production and Cd, Ni and Zn accumulation was high in SERP populations and low in the CAL and NMET ones.

Conclusions

N. caerulescens is a genetically diverse species, showing specific features depending on the group and the population. These features may reflect the wide adaptive capacities of the species, and also reveal promising potential for phytoextraction of Cd, Ni and Zn.  相似文献

Whereas endosymbiont-induced incompatibility is known to occur in various arthropod taxa, such as spider mites, insects and isopods, it has been rarely reported in plant-inhabiting predatory mites (Acari: Phytoseiidae). Recent cross-breeding studies with the phytoseiid mite Neoseiulus paspalivorus De Leon revealed a complete post-mating reproductive isolation between specimens collected from three geographic origins—Northeast Brazil (South America), Benin and Ghana (West Africa)—even though they are morphologically similar. We carried out a study to assess to what extent these populations exhibit genetic differences and whether endosymbionts are involved in the incompatibility. First, we used the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene to assess genetic diversity among the three populations. Second, we used a PCR-based method to check for the presence of Wolbachia and/or Cardinium in these populations, and we determined their phylogenetic relationships using specific primers for Wolbachia and Cardinium 16S rDNA genes. Third, we also conducted a test using an antibiotic (tetracycline) in an attempt to eliminate the symbionts and evaluate their effects on the reproductive compatibility of their host. Based on the DNA sequences of their COI genes, specimens of the three populations appear to be genetically similar. However, the 16S rDNA gene sequences of their associated endosymbionts differed among the three populations: the Benin and Brazil populations harbour different strains of Wolbachia symbionts, whereas the Ghana population harbours Cardinium symbionts. In response to antibiotic treatment females of each of the three populations became incompatible with untreated males of their own population, similar to that observed in crossings between females from one geographic population and males from another. Compatibility was restored in crosses involving uninfected Brazil females and uninfected Benin males, whereas the reciprocal crosses remained incompatible. Cardinium symbionts seem to be essential for oviposition in the Ghana population. It is concluded that their associated bacterial symbionts are the cause of the post-mating reproductive isolation previously observed among the three geographic populations. This insight is relevant to biological control of coconut mites for which N. paspalivorus is an effective predator, because introducing one geographic strain into the population of another (e.g. in field releases or mass cultures) may cause population growth depression.  相似文献

Sponges are important components of marine benthic communities. High microbial abundance sponges host a large diversity of associated microbial assemblages. However, the dynamics of such assemblages are still poorly known. In this study, we investigated whether bacterial assemblages present in Spongia lamella remained constant or changed as a function of the environment and life cycle. Sponges were collected in multiple locations and at different times of the year in the western Mediterranean Sea and in nearby Atlantic Ocean to cover heterogeneous environmental variability. Co-occurring adult sponges and offsprings were compared at two of the sites. To explore the composition and abundance of the main bacteria present in the sponge mesohyl, embryos, and larvae, we applied both 16S rRNA gene-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and sequencing of excised DGGE bands and quantitative polymerase chain reactions (qPCR). On average, the overall core bacterial assemblage showed over 60 % similarity. The associated bacterial assemblage fingerprints varied both within and between sponge populations, and the abundance of specific bacterial taxa assessed by qPCR significantly differed among sponge populations and between adult sponge and offsprings (higher proportions of Actinobacteria in the latter). Sequences showed between 92 and 100 % identity to sequences previously reported in GenBank, and all were affiliated with uncultured invertebrate bacterial symbionts (mainly sponges). Sequences were mainly related to Chloroflexi and Acidobacteria and a few to Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes. Additional populations may have been present under detection limits. Overall, these results support that both ecological and biological sponge features may shape the composition of endobiont bacterial communities in S. lamella.  相似文献

Morphometric studies are useful for delineating the shapes of various populations and species over geographical ranges and as evidence of regional differences in crustaceans. Hydrological fluctuations in a floodplain system modulate the dispersal and presence of decapods among habitats and constitute an important macrofactor that regulate other environmental variables and which could explain the richness, distribution and abundance of organisms that live in these systems. Morphological variations among populations of the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium borellii in a floodplain system at a microgeographical scale were studied using geometric morphometrics. Carapace structure was represented using 16 digitised landmarks. Allometry and sexual dimorphism was tested. Variation in shape was explored via Principal Component Analysis. Canonical Variate Analyses was applied to compare the differences in shape between species’ populations. The correlations and covariations among shapes and hydrometric level, current velocity, geographical location and hydrologic distances were analysed. The average carapace shape was different between sexes in all sites. Populations that were near each other in terms of hydrological distance had similar shapes, but all of the populations differed in shape from the farthest population. The environmental variables were not good predictors of the carapace shape. Instead, the shape was strongly related to the hydrologic distance and geographical location. The swimming characteristics of these prawns and their passive movements, together with the dynamics of a floodplain system, explain the low morphological variation between populations in this study. The dynamic characteristics of the system influence the dispersal of the prawns and allow populations to remain connected.  相似文献

Summary Four clones of the aphid Uroleucon rudbeckiae were grown on four clones of the host plant Rudbeckia laciniata. Age-specific fecundities were used to determine the fitness, F i , of each individual aphid. The analysis of variance for F i revealed that (1) plant genotype has a significant effect on aphid fitness; (2) there is an interaction between aphid and host plant genotypes with respect to aphid fitness; and (3) aphid fitness is affected by phenotypic differences among individual host plants. Result (2) supports the hypothesis that genotypic interactions between aphid and host may maintain genetic diversity in aphid populations. The results of a preference test, while not significant at customary probability levels, suggested that aphids will choose to feed on plants which confer greater fitness.  相似文献

Four parasitoid species on 10 aphid pests have been established in the Yemen Arab Republic. Aphidius colemani Viereck is the key species that includes most of the pest aphid species in its host range. The parasitoid fauna resembles closely that of the Ethiopian region, with some penetration of the Mediterranean elements.  相似文献

Feeding behavior in a troop of one subspecies of the Japanese monkey, the Yakuzaru (Macaca fuscata yakui), was observed for 407 hr on Yakushima Island between March and December 1976, after a three-month preliminary survey in 1975. The troop dwells in a mature warm temperate forest at a density of over 30 animals/km2. The 5-min scanning technique was employed from August to December 1976, to detect the quantitative features of feeding behavior. The members of this troop fed on 76 plant species: on the leaves of 26, the fruits of 45, and other parts of 12 species. The Yakuzaru is essentially frugivorous. The pattern of food selection is discussed in relation to fruit production. The animals fed much more on the leaves of deciduous than of evergreen woody plants. “Selection ratio” the percentage of time spent feeding on each species to the percentage abundance of each species in the sample strip, was calculated in order to evaluate food selection from the plant community. In addition, the food habits of this subspecies were compared with that of six other populations in various habitats in Japan, by computing the similarity index for the woody plant community, all woody plant food species, and all major woody plant food species.  相似文献

Μetal cofactors are required for enzymatic catalysis and structural stability of many proteins. Physiological metal requirements underpin the evolution of cellular and systemic regulatory mechanisms for metal uptake, storage and excretion. Considering the role of metal biology in animal evolution, this paper asks whether metal content is conserved between different fruit flies. A similar metal homeostasis was previously observed in Drosophilidae flies cultivated on the same larval medium. Each species accumulated in the order of 200 µg iron and zinc and approximately ten-fold less manganese and copper per gram dry weight of the adult insect. In this paper, data on the metal content in fourteen species of Tephritidae, which are major agricultural pests worldwide, are presented. These fruit flies can be polyphagous (e.g., Ceratitis capitata) or strictly monophagous (e.g., Bactrocera oleae) or oligophagous (e.g., Anastrepha grandis) and were maintained in the laboratory on five distinct diets based on olive oil, carrot, wheat bran, zucchini and molasses, respectively. The data indicate that overall metal content and distribution between the Tephritidae and Drosophilidae species was similar. Reduced metal concentration was observed in B. oleae. Feeding the polyphagous C. capitata with the diet of B. oleae resulted in a significant quantitative reduction of all metals. Thus, dietary components affect metal content in some Tephritidae. Nevertheless, although the evidence suggests some fruit fly species evolved preferences in the use or storage of particular metals, no metal concentration varied in order of magnitude between these two families of Diptera that evolved independently for over 100 million years.  相似文献

In some cases external morphology is not sufficient to discern between populations of a species, as occurs in the dung beetle Canthon humectus hidalgoensis Bates; and much less to determine phenotypic distances between them. FTIR-ATR spectroscopy show several advantages over other identification techniques (e.g. morphological, genetic, and cuticular hydrocarbons analysis) due to the non-invasive manner of the sample preparation, the relative speed of sample analysis and the low-cost of this technology. The infrared spectrum obtained is recognized to give a unique ‘fingerprint’ because vibrational spectra are specific and unique to the molecular nature of the sample. In our study, results showed that proteins, amino acids and aromatic ethers of insect exocuticle have promising discriminative power to discern between different populations of C. h. hidalgoensis. Furthermore, the correlation between geographic distances between populations and the chemical distances obtained by proteins + amino acids + aromatic ethers was statistically significant, showing that the spectral and spatial information available of the taxa together with appropriated chemometric methods may help to a better understanding of the identity, structure, dynamics and diversity of insect populations.  相似文献
