Summary. 1. P.spwnarius nymphs selected young, upper leaves of Xanthium strumarium plants, which have a relatively high amino acid concentration in the xylem sap.

Three species of aphids attack pecan foliage, Carya illinoensis (Wang.) K. Koch, and cause economic damage. We tested a kaolin-based particle film against one of these aphid species, black pecan aphid, Melanocallis caryaefoliae (Davis). Effect of particle film on host selection, adult mortality, and production of nymphs by M. caryaefoliae was tested on seedling pecans in the laboratory. Fewer M. caryaefoliae adults selected treated foliage compared with untreated foliage. A higher percentage of adults that did select treated foliage were recovered from upper leaf surfaces compared with the percentage of adults recovered from upper leaf surfaces of untreated leaves. Observations with a microscope revealed an accumulation of particle film on aphid body parts, especially on tarsi, and strongly suggests that aphid mobility was restricted. Adult mortality was higher on treated foliage and led to an overall decrease in production of nymphs on those seedlings. In addition, we measured spectral properties of treated seedling pecan foliage. Light reflectance by treated foliage was increased and absorptance decreased compared with control foliage whereas transmittance of light through control and particle film-treated leaves was similar. We did not detect any phytotoxic effect on pecan due to application of particle film.  相似文献

Summary An analysis of the foraging behaviors of several species of palatable and unpalatable lepidopterous larvae indicates that palatable caterpillars partition their time between feeding and behaviors that could be related to escape visually oriented predators. Depending on the species, palatable caterpillars do all or several of the following: 1) restrict themselves to the underside of leaves at all times, 2) restrict foraging to night-time, 3) commute to and from their feeding area on leaves, 4) move from the unfinished leaf to a distant leaf after a feeding bout, thus removing themselves from the evidence of their eating, 5) snip off partially-eaten leaves after feeding on them. The less palatable, or unpalatable, caterpillars do not snip off partially-eaten leaves, feed from leaves leaving tattered edges, and are often exposed resting and feeding on the leaf surfaces in direct sunshine. I conclude that some caterpillar foraging behaviors may have evolved under the selective pressure of visually-oriented predators that use leaf-damage as a cue in their searching behavior.  相似文献

Microbial endosymbionts alter the phenotype of their host which may have cascading effects at both population and community levels. However, we currently lack information on whether the effects of viruses on both host phenotypic traits and host population demography can modify interactions with upper trophic levels. To fill this gap, we investigated whether a prevalent densovirus infecting the aphid Myzus persicae (i.e. MpDNV) can modify trophic interactions between host aphids and their natural enemies (i.e. predators and parasitoids) by influencing aphid phenotypic traits (i.e. body mass and defensive behaviours), population demography (i.e. density and age-structure) and susceptibility towards both predation and parasitism. We found that the virus decreased aphid body mass but did not influence their behavioural defences. At the population level, the virus had a minor effect on aphid adult mortality whereas it strongly reduced the density of nymphs and influenced the stage structure of aphid populations. In addition, the virus enhanced the susceptibility of aphids to parasitism regardless of the parasitoid species. Predation rate on adult aphids was not influenced by the virus but ladybeetle predators strongly decreased the number of aphid nymphs, especially for uninfected ones compared to infected ones. As a result, the virus decreased predator effect on aphid populations. By reducing both aphid quality and availability, increasing their susceptibility to parasitism, and modulating predator effect on aphid populations, we highlighted that viral endosymbionts can be prevalent drivers of their host ecology as they modify their phenotypes and interspecific interactions. These virus-mediated ecological effects may have consequences on enemies foraging strategies as well as trophic webs dynamics and structure.  相似文献

Three aphid species regularly feed on pecan [Carya illinoinensis (Wangenh.) K. Koch (Juglandaceae)] foliage: the black pecan aphid, Melanocallis caryaefoliae (Davis), the yellow pecan aphid, Monelliopsis pecanis Bissell, and the blackmargined aphid, Monellia caryella (Fitch) (all Hemiptera: Aphididae). Adults of M. caryaefoliae and both the nymphs and adults of M. pecanis and M. caryella mainly feed on the lower surface of leaves. Nymphs of M. caryaefoliae appear unique by frequently feeding on the upper surface of pecan leaves. This is risky behavior given the environmental hazards (e.g., rain, solar radiation, and dislodgement) associated with the upper surface. Thus, we determined the leaf surface distribution of M. caryaefoliae on trees in an orchard and on pecan seedlings in the laboratory. A pecan orchard survey found all three aphid species and stages predominantly on the lower leaf surface, except for the nymphs of M. caryaefoliae, which were evenly distributed between upper and lower leaf surfaces. This survey also found aphidophagous lacewing (Neuroptera) larvae predominantly on the lower leaf surface, whereas ladybird beetle (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) larvae were more evenly distributed between upper and lower surfaces. Laboratory experiments using single or multiple pecan aphid species revealed M. caryaefoliae distribution on pecan seedlings similar to orchard data. Nymphal M. caryaefoliae require nearly 2 days to elicit chlorotic feeding lesions on leaves; without these lesions, nymphal development is hindered. The similar distribution of nymphs of M. caryaefoliae on both leaf surfaces likely reflects a strategy of predator avoidance allowing a proportion of the population to survive.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Although interactions between ants and honeydew-producing insects have received considerable study, relatively little is known about how these interactions alter the behaviour of ants in ways that affect other arthropods. In this study, field and greenhouse experiments were performed that examined how the presence of aphids ( Aphis fabae solanella ) on Solanum nigrum influenced the foraging behaviour of Argentine ants ( Linepithema humile ) and, in turn, modified the extent to which ants deter larval lacewings ( Chrysoperla rufilabris ), which are known aphid predators.
2. A field experiment demonstrated that the level of foliar foraging by ants increased linearly with aphid abundance, whereas no relationship existed between the level of ground foraging by ants and aphid abundance.
3. In the greenhouse, as in the field, foliar foraging by ants greatly increased when aphids were present. Higher levels of foliar foraging led to a twofold increase in the likelihood that ants contacted aphid predators. As a result of these increased encounters with ants, lacewing larvae were twice as likely to be removed from plants with aphids compared with plants without aphids. Once contact was made, however, the behaviour of ants towards lacewing larvae appeared similar between the two experimental groups.
4. Argentine ants drive away or prey upon a diversity of arthropod predators and parasitoids, but they also exhibit aggression towards certain herbivores. Future work should attempt to quantify how the ecological effects that result from interactions between honeydew-producing insects and invasive ants, such as L. humile , differ from those that result from interactions between honeydew-producing insects and native ants.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Small arenas in the field were used for observing adult Agonum dorsale (Pont.) foraging in a wheat crop.
2. The carabid showed no significant change in behaviour between low and high aphid density arenas.
3. Individuals foraged nocturnally and spent most of their time on the ground searching for prey. They climbed infrequently and then not high enough to reach aphid aggregations on the ears and flag leaves of wheat.
4. Gut dissection showed that more individuals had eaten aphids in the high aphid density arena than the low. Recording of aphid distribution within the arenas showed that this increase in aphid consumption could be explained by A.dorsale capturing aphids on the ground. Prey availability per unit area was in fact higher on the ground than on the wheat.
5. The contribution of ground-zone predators such as A.dorsale to the control of cereal aphids will be determined by the frequency with which aphids arrive on the ground and the proportion of these which reclimb the wheat and reproduce in the absence of predation.  相似文献

The nature and severity of intraguild interactions between predators and entomopathogens will be determined, in part, by a combination of threat of infection, and avoidance of that threat by the predator. We determined the threat of infection posed by the entomopathogen, Paecilomyces fumosoroseus (as PFR-97™) to the generalist predator, Dicyphus hesperus. We then asked if D. hesperus displays behavioral avoidance of infection while foraging for whitefly nymphs at different stages of infection by the pathogen. When exposed to leaf surfaces treated with the pathogen, 28% of adult female predators died due to infection. Consumption of Ephestia kuehniella eggs by surviving predators over 6 d was significantly reduced, suggesting effects of a sublethal infection. Whitefly nymphs that had been treated with P. fumosoroseus 3 d prior were acceptable as prey to D. hesperus but whitefly nymphs that had been treated with P. fumosoroseus 5 days prior were not. When foraging for whitefly nymphs, adult D. hesperus females rejected infected nymphs 96% of the time, compared to 39% of non-infected nymphs. Paecilomyces fumosoroseus therefore presents a measurable threat to D. hesperus through mortality and reduced prey consumption. Dicyphus hesperus does not avoid initial contact with infected prey but does not feed on such prey. The mechanism underlying these rejections could be due to either avoidance of infection or rejection of prey already consumed by the infectious agent. These results suggest that predation by D. hesperus foraging among infected whitefly nymphs under greenhouse or natural conditions could be reduced through a combination of pathogenicity and reduced efficiency of foraging.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Increasing evidence suggests that insects can assess their environment based on cues related to mortality risks to themselves or their offspring. Limited knowledge is available on such abilities in relation to entomopathogenic fungi, which can cause significant mortality in insect populations. In laboratory bioassays, the ability of the generalist predator Anthocoris nemorum L. (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) to detect the presence of its natural enemy, the fungal pathogen Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin (Ascomycota: Hypocreales) was investigated.
2. Behavioural observations were conducted on adults of A. nemorum foraging in choice and non-choice arenas treated with conidia suspensions of B. bassiana or just the carrier (control). The arenas consisted either of nettle leaves or soil. Additionally, behaviours in response to sporulating nettle aphid cadavers compared with uninfected aphids or paper balls were evaluated on nettle leaves. An oviposition experiment was also conducted in choice arenas on conidia-treated and untreated nettle leaves.
3. Males and females detected and avoided contact with leaf surfaces inoculated with B. bassiana . Females that were forced to enter fungus-treated leaf surfaces were very reluctant to do so. When females encountered cadavers sporulating with B. bassiana they rapidly withdrew compared with harmless paper ball dummies. Soil inoculated with B. bassiana did not affect A. nemorum behaviour or residence time compared with control soil. Females inserted significantly more eggs in control leaf areas compared with areas treated with B. bassiana conidia.
4. All results suggest that A. nemorum detects and avoids the pathogen B. bassiana when it forages on host plants with which it is adapted but not on soil surfaces. The adaptive significance of detection of entomopathogenic fungi is discussed.  相似文献

We examined the foraging patterns of two species of caterpillar (Junonia coenia: Nymphalidae and Spilosoma congrua: Arctiidae) that contrast in feeding specialization and crypticity on plantain (Plantago lanceolata) in the absence and presence of two different insect predators [stinkbugs, Podisus maculiventris (Pentatomidae) and wasps, Polistes fuscatus (Vespidae)]. Junonia larvae were quite apparent to human observers, feeding on upper leaf surfaces during daylight, whereas Spilosoma larvae were relatively cryptic, often hiding under leaves and in soil crevices during daylight. In the presence of either predator species, the non-cryptic Junonia caterpillars more quickly left the plant on which they were initially placed and were less apparent than Junonia larvae not exposed to predators. The presence of predators had no detectable influence on where the caterpillars occurred on the plants (new, intermediate-aged or mature leaves, or reproductive stalks). Surprisingly, the predators influenced the behavior of the inherently cryptic Spilosoma: the apparency of these larvae at night increased when wasps had access to the plots during the day. Survivorship of the non-cryptic Junonia was less than 12% when stinkbugs were present compared to 60% in their absence. Although the presence of wasps resulted in a lower relative growth rate for the non-cryptic Junonia larvae, the indirect effect of predators on reduction in survivorship due to alterations in prey growth rate through behavioral changes was less than 3%. After taking into account the decline in caterpillars per plot through predation, we found that both the amount of leaves eaten and the proportion of plants eaten were altered on plots with predators present, which suggests that the caterpillars' increased consumption countered increased maintenance costs due to the presence of predators. Overall, our results indicate that hostplant size, level of predation and type of predator can influence the degree to which these caterpillars react to the presence of insect predators. In contrast, degree of inherent feeding specialization and cryptic behavior seemed to have little effect on the expression of reactive behaviors of these caterpillars to predators.  相似文献

1. The effects of predator species, aphid density, aphid age, diel period, and habitat complexity on the dropping behaviour of the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum were assessed in a series of laboratory and field-cage experiments.
2. The presence of foliar-foraging predators significantly increased the proportion of aphids that dropped from alfalfa plants. In the absence of predators, less than 7% of the aphids dropped. Dropping more than doubled (14%) when one of three hemipteran predators , N. americoferus, G. punctipes or O. insidiosus , was present. Nearly 60% of the aphids dropped when the ladybird beetle, Coccinella septempunctata , was present.
3. Adult aphids showed a significantly higher propensity to drop than immature aphids, regardless of the presence or absence of predators. Aphid density had no effect on dropping behaviour.
4. Neither diel period nor habitat complexity had an effect on aphid dropping behaviour. Aphids were significantly more likely to drop in the presence of predators during either the day or night and from either early or late regrowth alfalfa.
5. A review of the factors affecting dropping behaviour, including those elucidated in this study, indicates that the propensity to drop from a plant is influenced by three factors: the risk of predation on the plant, the quality of the resource to be abandoned, and the risk of mortality in the new microhabitat.  相似文献

Summary The thickness of sclerenchyma around the veins of lime leaves varies with both size of leaf and size of vein and may provide a barrier to stylet penetration. Although small veins confer greater nutritional benefits and have no lignified barriers, there are advantages to feeding on the larger veins for those more mature aphids which can penetrate the sclerenchyma. Feeding on the large veins of the upper surface, which are situated in grooves, may provide protection against dislodgement. On the undersurfaces of small leaves, feeding on large veins promotes orientation towards the petiole and early warning of approaching predators. On the corresponding surfaces of large leaves the sclerenchyma is thicker but aphids can achieve orientation by feeding on the smallest veins.  相似文献

利用刺吸电位技术(EPG)记录甘蓝蚜Brevicoryne brassicae在芥菜Sinapis alba 不同部位上的取食行为,同时用高压液相色谱(HPLC)分析芥菜相应部位的芥子油苷(glucosinolates)含量,据此分析芥子油苷在甘蓝蚜对寄主部位偏好行为中的作用。选择芥菜三个部位进行取食行为记录和化学分析,即新出完全叶(第7片)的叶片、叶柄,以及花茎。相对于其它两个部位,甘蓝蚜的口针在花茎上用较少的刺探次数和较短的时间到达韧皮部;一旦口针进入韧皮部持续吸食阶段,蚜虫在三个部位的取食行为没有太大的差异。只在花茎的表皮和皮层中测定到较高含量的白芥子苷(glucosinalbin)。因此,本实验的结果证明,白芥子苷是甘蓝蚜寄主部位选择的关键信号化学物质或取食促进剂。  相似文献

Abstract. 1. One possible component of successful parasitism by insect parasitoids is the reduction of predation and hyperparasitism through the modification of host behaviour.
2. Just prior to death, potato aphids, Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas), containing diapausing larvae of the parasitoid Aphidius nigripes Ashmead have been shown to leave the host plant to mummify in concealed sites, while those parasitized by non-diapausing individuals generally leave the aphid colony to mummify on the upper leaf surfaces.
3. The present study examines the within plant distribution of aphids and mummies containing non-diapausing A.nigripes , and compares parasitoid survival among microhabitats under field conditions.
4. On potato, Solunum tuberosum L., a significant proportion of aphids were found on lower leaf surfaces, whereas mummies were usually on the upper surfaces, particularly in the apical stratum of the plant canopy.
5. In both field surveys and experimental manipulations, parasitoid survival was higher on the upper surface of apical leaves than in other microhabitats, due to lower levels of hyperparasitism and, to a lesser extent, lower predation. This suggests that the pressure exerted by natural enemies has influenced the evolution of host behaviour modification.  相似文献

In Africa, Typhlodromalus manihoti and T. aripo, two introduced predators of the cassava green mite Mononychellus tanajoa, occupy different parts of cassava foliage. In the present study, niche use by these two predators, as mediated by prey-induced infochemicals, was investigated. In response to prey feeding damage, cassava plant parts emit volatile blends, that attract phytoseiidae predators. When given a choice between old cassava leaves infested with M. tanajoa and either apices or young cassava leaves infested with M. tanajoa, T. aripo displayed a marked preference for odors emitted from either infested apices or infested young leaves over infested old leaves but showed no preference for odors from apices versus young leaves, all infested with M. tanajoa. Typhlodromalus manihoti did not discriminate between volatiles from the three infested cassava plant parts. Our data show that T. aripo uses differences in volatile blends released by infested cassava plant parts and restricts its fundamental niche to a realized niche, which enables coexistence with its competitor T. manihoti.  相似文献

1. Female eugenia psyllids Trioza eugeniae oviposit on the margins of expanding young Syzygium paniculatum leaves. The developing nymphs, feeding within pit‐shaped galls on the leaves, cause the leaves to become curled and deformed. The degree of leaf curling was correlated positively with densities of T. eugeniae nymphs. 2. High relative humidity increased persistence of nymphs on leaves at low insect densities, but persistence did not differ between high or low relative humidity conditions when nymphal densities were high and leaves were greatly curled. 3. Direct insolation increased nymphal mortality. Nymphs on the abaxial leaf surface in the direct sun had lower mortality than similarly exposed nymphs on the adaxial leaf surface. 4. Field populations showed high preference for abaxial leaf surfaces and a stronger preference for shaded adaxial surfaces than for exposed adaxial surfaces. 5. Adverse environmental conditions of direct insolation and low relative humidity may be mitigated by leaf curl associated with moderate populations, however competition at high nymphal density supersedes any potential benefit arising from leaf curling and has a negative effect on nymphal survival.  相似文献

Competitive interactions in arthropod predators are well-known, but positive interactions have received less attention. The two-spotted stinkbugPerillus bioculatus often feeds gregariously on leaf beetle larvae and caterpillar prey. Consequences of prey sharing amongP. bioculatus conspecifics of dissimilar size (instar) was studied using Colorado potato beetle (CPB) prey. Rearing second-instar (N2) nymphs ofP. bioculatus with an N5 conspecific facilitated early feeding on L4 CPB larvae (a difficult prey to handle by N2 nymphs but not by N5’s), thus increasing survival and accelerating development. One in every 20 cases ofP. bioculatus foraging in the field was accounted for by pairs or small groups of mostly feeding individuals. CPB egg masses and L4’s represented a disproportionate number of cases of aggregated feeding byP. bioculatus, compared to feeding singly. Small CPB larvae decreased in the diet of aggregated stinkbugs compared to L4 larvae and egg masses, suggesting that sharing these prey may be favorable or unavoidable. In a field test measuring residence/survival of N2’s limited to L4 prey, the N2’s rate of residence/survival increased significantly when large nymphs acting as food providers were also present. The function of communal feeding inP. bioculatus is discussed, as well as the potential for greater impact on prey density that may be expected from tolerance to opportunistic feeding by conspecifics in slightly gregarious predators.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. A study of searching behaviour on wheat and host preference of Aphidius rhopalosiphi (DeStefani-Perez) is described.
2. Parasitoids divided their time equally between the leaves but spent very little time on the ear.
3. After contact with honeydew or an aphid host, parasitoids were arrested in a particular area and increased the time spent searching.
4. Aphids feeding on the ear were parasitized less successfully, since their position between the grains protected them from parasitoid attacks.
5. A.rhopalosiphi exhibited no preference for Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker) or Sitobion avenae (Fabricius), although the handling time for the latter was significantly longer; this resulted in fewer S.avenae being parasitized when it was abundant. Parasitoids did not switch between hosts in these experiments.
6. As a result of its searching behaviour, A.rhopalosiphi will encounter and parasitize M.dirhodum feeding on the leaves more frequently than S.avenae, which feeds on the ear. This will limit the parasitoid's ability to regulate populations of the cereal aphid S. avenae.  相似文献

Apterous Sitobion avenae on oats were found to have a higher reproductive rate on the ears (5–95 nymphs per day) than on young leaves (3–78 nymphs per day), mature leaves (2–17 nymphs per day) or senescent leaves (2–08 nymphs per day). At each growth stage of the the host plant large aphids gave birth to more young than small aphids, but aphids of the same weight on different growth stages of the host plant had different reproductive rates. On wheat in the field S. avenae gave birth to more young on the ears but less on the leaves than Metopolophium dirhodum on the leaves.
The suitability of ears to S. avenae changed through the flowering and ripening stages. During the latter part of the milky-ripe stage the reproductive rate of S. avenae declined and its mortality increased. The consequences of the variations in reproduction and mortality are discussed in relation to the life history and population dynamics of S. avenae and the assessment of cereal varieties for aphid resistance.  相似文献

Entomopathogenic fungi and the predatory stinkbug Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) can target simultaneously the same or different pests in agroecosystems. Topical contact during fungal dispersion or spraying, walking on plant surfaces and ingestion of contaminated prey are some of possible ways of interactions between fungi and the predatory stinkbug. The impact of three isolates of Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorok. (866, 1022 and 1189) and Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. (604, 634 and 561) against nymphs and adults of P. nigrispinus was investigated under laboratory conditions. M. anisopliae caused higher mortality compared to B. bassiana either by topical application or by dry residue on cotton leaves. Topic contact with both fungi caused higher mortality to the predator. No mortality confirmation was reported for the adults. Nymphs fed with cotton leafworm larvae Alabama argillacea (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) contaminated by the fungi had their reproduction affected, but this was not observed when adult predators fed on contaminated larvae. These findings suggest that isolates of M. anisopliae can cause mortality of P. nigrispinus nymphs by topical contact, while isolates of B. bassiana were less harmful by all ways of infection as compared to M. anisopliae.  相似文献
