Exercise interventions have been considered to be an effective treatment for drug addiction. However, there is little dirct evidence that exercise affects brain activity in individuals afftected by drug addiction. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of different exercise programs on detoxification. Cognitive recovery with 64-channel electroencephalography (EEG) recordings was obtained before and after three months of daily aerobic and anaerobic exercise. A total of 63 subjects with methamphetamine addiction were recruited and randomly divided into three groups for cognitive study in four behavioral states: an anaerobic resistance treatment group, an aerobic cycling treatment group and a control group. In addition, four behavioral states were examined: eyes-closed and eyes-open resting states, and exploratory behavior states following either drug- or neutral-cue exposure. Over a 12-week period, the alpha block ratio in the control group showed a slight decrease, while clear increases were observed in the resistance exercise and cycling treatment groups, particularly under the frontal and temporal regions in the eyes-open and drug-cue conditions. The major EEG activity frequency in the resistance treatment group during the drug-cue behavior task decreased compared with the frequencies of the cycling exercise and control groups. Meanwhile, the power of higher brain rhythms in the resistance treatment group was increased. Finally, the brain alpha wave left-lateralization index from EEG recording sites, F1–F2, in the resistance and cycling treatment groups under the eyes-closed condition positively decreased, while the control groups only showed slight decreases. Taken together, these results suggest that different types of exercise may induce distince and different positive therapeutic effects to facilitate detoxification.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (10.1007/s11571-020-09647-w) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.  相似文献

Exercise, free radicals and oxidative stress   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
This article reviews the role of free radicals in causing oxidative stress during exercise. High intensity exercise induces oxidative stress and although there is no evidence that this affects sporting performance in the short term, it may have longer term health consequences. The mechanisms of exercise-induced oxidative stress are not well understood. Mitochondria are sometimes considered to be the main source of free radicals, but in vitro studies suggest they may play a more minor role than was first thought. There is a growing acceptance of the importance of haem proteins in inducing oxidative stress. The release of metmyoglobin from damaged muscle is known to cause renal failure in exercise rhabdomyolysis. Furthermore, levels of methaemoglobin increase during high intensity exercise, while levels of antioxidants, such as reduced glutathione, decrease. We suggest that the free-radical-mediated damage caused by the interaction of metmyoglobin and methaemoglobin with peroxides may be an important source of oxidative stress during exercise.  相似文献

This is a brief review of current evidence for the relationships between physical activity and exercise and the brain and cognition throughout the life span in non-pathological populations. We focus on the effects of both aerobic and resistance training and provide a brief overview of potential neurobiological mechanisms derived from non-human animal models. Whereas research has focused primarily on the benefits of aerobic exercise in youth and young adult populations, there is growing evidence that both aerobic and resistance training are important for maintaining cognitive and brain health in old age. Finally, in these contexts, we point out gaps in the literature and future directions that will help advance the field of exercise neuroscience, including more studies that explicitly examine the effect of exercise type and intensity on cognition, the brain, and clinically significant outcomes. There is also a need for human neuroimaging studies to adopt a more unified multi-modal framework and for greater interaction between human and animal models of exercise effects on brain and cognition across the life span.  相似文献

The focus of this paper is on the glycemic index (GI) that provides effectual information on planning nutritional strategies for carbohydrate (CHO) supplementation in exercise. Related research has suggested that the GI can be used as a reference guide for the selection of an ideal CHO supplement in sports nutrition. Recently, the manipulation of GI of CHO supplementation in optimizing athletic performance has provided an exciting new research area in sports nutrition. There is a growing evidence to support the use of the GI in planning the nutritional strategies for CHO supplementation in sports. The optimum CHO availability for exercise has been demonstrated by manipulating the GI of CHO. Research has shown that a low GI CHO-rich meal is a suitable CHO source before prolonged exercise in order to promote the availability of the sustained CHO. In contrast, a high GI CHO-rich meal appears to be beneficial for glycogen storage after the exercise by promoting greater glucose and insulin responses. The prescribed feeding patterns of CHO intake during recovery and prior to exercise on glycogen re-synthesis and exercise metabolism have been studied in the literature. However, the studies on the subject are still limited, leaving some open questions waiting for further empirical evidences. The most significant question is whether CHO supplementation before and after exercise is beneficial when consumed as large feedings or as a series of snacks. Further research is needed on the effect of feeding patterns on exercise performance.  相似文献

An experiment is reported which evaluated performance on a 10-sec unfilled time interval estimation task before, during, and after physical work on a cycle ergometer at relative intensities of 30 and 60% VO2max. Results from eleven healthy male subjects revealed a significant increase in time estimation variability and a decrease in the mean estimated time intervals during exercise compared to non-exercise phases. These findings are part of a growing body of evidence which indicates that exercise and its severity has a substantive impact on perceptual and cognitive performance, particularly the ability to synchronize and anticipate the timing of events.  相似文献

Exercise-induced bone gains are lost if exercise ceases. Therefore, continued exercise at a reduced frequency or intensity may be required to maintain these benefits. In this study, we evaluated whether 4 wk of reduced exercise after 4 wk of running exercise in growing male mice results in the maintenance of high bone mass. Five-week-old mice were divided into the following groups: 1) baseline control; 2) 4-wk control; 3) 4-wk exercise; 4) 8-wk control; 5) 4-wk exercise followed by 4-wk cessation of training; and 6) 4-wk exercise followed by reduced exercise at half the frequency. The regimen consisted of exercise 6 days/wk, and the reduced exercise regimen consisted of running 3 days/wk on a treadmill for 30 min/day, at 12 m/min on a 10 degrees uphill slope. Running exercise significantly increased bone mineral density of the femur, periosteal mineral apposition rate, bone formation rate, percent labeled perimeter at the midfemur, and osteogenic activity of bone marrow cells. However, these parameters declined to the age-matched sedentary control after cessation of training. In contrast, the reduced exercise group had significantly higher mineral apposition rate compared with those of the sedentary control and cessation of training groups. Furthermore, bone mineral density for the reduced exercise group was significantly higher than those for the other groups. These results suggest that the high bone formation gained through exercise can be maintained, and bone mass was further increased by subsequent exercise even if the exercise frequency is reduced.  相似文献

Glycemic control is essential to reduce the risk of complications associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Aerobic and resistance exercise performed alone or in combination improve glycemic control in both conditions. However, perceived lack of time and commitment are considered principal barriers to performing exercise regularly. High intensity interval training (HIIT) and sprint interval training (SIT) can be performed in a fraction of the time required for continuous aerobic exercise. A substantial scientific evidence indicates that HIIT/SIT improve glycemic control to a similar or greater extent than aerobic exercise in populations without MetS or T2D. Likewise, growing evidence suggest that HIIT/SIT improve the glycemic control during MetS and T2D. The aim of this review is to discuss the effects of interval training protocols on peripheral markers of glucose metabolism in patients with MetS and T2D.  相似文献

Imparting a basic understanding of evolutionary principles to students in an active, engaging fashion can be troublesome because the logistics involved in designing experiments where students pose their own questions and use the data to test alternative hypotheses often outstrip time and financial constraints. In recent years, educators have begun publishing exercises that teach evolution using innovative, in-class experiments. This article adds to this growing forum by describing a classroom exercise that introduces the concept of evolution by natural selection in a hypothesis-driven, experimental fashion, using a deck of cards. Our standard exercise is suitable for upper-level high school and introductory biology students at the college level. In this paper, we discuss the exercise in detail and give several examples that illustrate how our games provide accessible bridges to the primary literature. Finally, we discuss how extensions of our basic exercise can be used to effectively teach advanced evolutionary concepts.  相似文献

It is unclear whether regular exercise depletes body iron stores and how exercise regulates iron absorption. In this study, growing female Sprague–Dawley rats were fed a high-iron diet (300 mg iron/kg) and subjected to swimming for 1, 3, or 12 months. Their body weight, liver nonheme iron content (NHI), spleen NHI, blood hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, hematocrit (Hct), and kinetics of 59Fe transfer across isolated duodenal segments were then compared with sedentary controls. The main results were as follows: exercise for 1 month enhanced the transepithelial 59Fe transfer and increased liver NHI content and Hb concentration; exercise for 3 months inhibited transepithelial 59Fe transfer without affecting the liver and spleen NHI content, Hb concentration, and Hct; exercise for 12 months did not affect these parameters as compared with the corresponding sedentary controls; and the changes in transepithelial iron transfer were not associated with basolateral iron transfer. Our findings demonstrated that chronic, regular exercise in growing rats with a high dietary iron content does not deplete iron stores in the liver and spleen and may possibly enhance or inhibit duodenal iron absorption and even maintain duodenal iron absorption at the sedentary level, at least, in part depending on growth.  相似文献

Be smart, exercise your heart: exercise effects on brain and cognition   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
An emerging body of multidisciplinary literature has documented the beneficial influence of physical activity engendered through aerobic exercise on selective aspects of brain function. Human and non-human animal studies have shown that aerobic exercise can improve a number of aspects of cognition and performance. Lack of physical activity, particularly among children in the developed world, is one of the major causes of obesity. Exercise might not only help to improve their physical health, but might also improve their academic performance. This article examines the positive effects of aerobic physical activity on cognition and brain function, at the molecular, cellular, systems and behavioural levels. A growing number of studies support the idea that physical exercise is a lifestyle factor that might lead to increased physical and mental health throughout life.  相似文献

This paper reports that the selective beta(2)-adrenergic receptor agonist clenbuterol affects bone metabolism in growing 3-mo-old male Wistar rats treated over 8 wk. Thirty-two 3-mo-old growing Wistar rats weighing 234 +/- 2 g were assigned to a progressive isometric force, strength-training exercise program plus oral clenbuterol (2 mg x kg body wt(-1) x day(-1)) for 5 days each week, exercise program without clenbuterol 5 days each week, no exercise program plus oral clenbuterol (2 mg x kg(-1) x day(-1)) for 5 days each week, or no exercise without clenbuterol 5 days each week. At the end of 8 wk, lean mass, fat mass, and right total femoral, distal metaphyseal femoral, and diaphyseal femoral bone mineral density were measured by Hologic QDR 4,500 dual X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) technique. Left femoral bones were harvested after death on day 58, and femoral resistance was determined by three-point bending testing. We found that fat mass was decreased in rats given strength training exercise and decreased further in rats treated with clenbuterol. Lean mass was increased in clenbuterol-treated animals. Strength-training exercise appeared to have no effect on bone mineral density, serum osteocalcin, or urinary deoxypyridinoline. However, clenbuterol treatment decreased femoral length, diameter, bone mineral density, and mechanical resistance. Clenbuterol had no effect on osteocalcin but increased urinary deoxypyridinoline. We concluded that clenbuterol treatment decreased bone mineral density and increased bone resorption independent of the level of exercise rats were given.  相似文献

Background

A growing diversity of biological data is tagged with unique identifiers (UIDs) associated with polynucleotides and proteins to ensure efficient computer-mediated data storage, maintenance, and processing. These identifiers, which are not informative for most people, are often substituted by biologically meaningful names in various presentations to facilitate utilization and dissemination of sequence-based knowledge. This substitution is commonly done manually that may be a tedious exercise prone to mistakes and omissions.  相似文献

It is still not possible to provide an evidence-based answer to the question of whether regular exercise is essential for normal growth. It is also unclear whether very low levels of exercise result in growth deficits. Regular exposure to exercise is characterized by heterogeneity in responsiveness, with most individuals experiencing improvements in fitness traits but a significant proportion showing only very minor gains. Whether a sedentary mode of life during the growing years results in a permanent deficit in cardiorespiratory fitness or a diminished ability to respond favorably to regular exercise later in life remains to be investigated. Although several genes have been associated with fitness levels or response to regular exercise, the quality of the evidence is weak mainly because studies are statistically underpowered. The special case of the obese, sedentary child is discussed, and the importance of the "energy gap" in the excess weight gain during growth is highlighted. Obese, sedentary children have high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, elevated glycemia and type 2 diabetes, hepatic steatosis, respiratory problems, orthopedic complications, and other health disorders more frequently than normal weight, physically active children. The role of genetic differences in the inclination to be sedentary or physically active is reviewed. An understanding of the true role of genetic differences and regular exercise on the growth of children will require more elaborate paradigms incorporating not only DNA sequence variants and exercise exposure but also information on nutrition, programming, and epigenetic events during fetal life and early postnatal years.  相似文献

To investigate the adaptive responses of immature bone to increased loads, young (3-wk-old) White Leghorn roosters were subjected to moderately intense treadmill running for 5 or 9 wk. The training program induced significant increases in maximal O2 consumption and muscle fumarase activity in the 12-wk-old birds, demonstrating that growing chickens have the ability to enhance their aerobic capacity. The structural and mechanical properties of the runners' tarsometatarsus bones were compared with sedentary age-matched controls at 8 and 12 wk of age. Suppression of circumferential growth occurred with exercise at both ages, whereas exercise enhanced middiaphysial cortical thickening, especially on the bones' concave surfaces. Although cross-sectional area moments of inertia did not change with exercise, significant decreases in bending stiffness, energy to yield, and energy to fracture were observed. It was concluded that strenuous exercise may retard long-bone maturation, resulting in more compliant bones.  相似文献

Nicotine is the main psychoactive substance present in tobacco, targeting neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. The main effects of nicotine associated with smoking are nicotinic receptor activation, desensitization, and upregulation, with the subsequent modulation of the mesocorticolimbic dopaminergic system. However, there is a lack of a comprehensive explanation of their roles that effectively makes clear how nicotine dependence might be established on those grounds. Receptor upregulation is an unusual effect for a drug of abuse, because theoretically this implies less need for drug consumption. Receptor upregulation and receptor desensitization are commonly viewed as opposite, homeostatic mechanisms. We here review the available information on smoking addiction, especially under a recently presented model of nicotine dependence. In this model both receptor upregulation and receptor desensitization are responsible for establishing a biochemical mechanism of nicotine dependence, which have an important role in starting and maintaining tobacco addiction.  相似文献

High-impact exercise is considered to be very beneficial for bones. We investigated the ability of jump exercise to restore bone mass and structure after the deterioration induced by tail suspension in growing rats and made comparisons with treadmill running exercise. Five-week-old male Wistar rats (n = 28) were randomly assigned to four body weight-matched groups: a spontaneous recovery group after tail suspension (n = 7), a jump exercise group after tail suspension (n = 7), a treadmill running group after tail suspension (n = 7), and age-matched controls without tail suspension or exercise (n = 7). Treadmill running was performed at 25 m/min, 1 h/day, 5 days/wk. The jump exercise protocol consisted of 10 jumps/day, 5 days/wk, with a jump height of 40 cm. Bone mineral density (BMD) of the total right femur was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Three-dimensional trabecular bone architecture at the distal femoral metaphysis was evaluated using microcomputed tomography. After 5 wk of free remobilization, right femoral BMD, right hindlimb muscle weight, and body weight returned to age-matched control levels, but trabeculae remained thinner and less connected. Although both jump and running exercises during the remobilization period increased trabecular bone mass, jump exercise increased trabecular thickness, whereas running exercise increased trabecular number. These results indicate that restoration of trabecular bone architecture induced by jump exercise during remobilization is predominantly attributable to increased trabecular thickness, whereas running adds trabecular bone mass through increasing trabecular number, and suggest that jumping and running exercises have different mechanisms of action on structural characteristics of trabecular bone.  相似文献

Drugs of abuse are able to elicit compulsive drug-seeking behaviors upon repeated administration, which ultimately leads to the phenomenon of addiction. Evidence indicates that the susceptibility to develop addiction is influenced by sources of reinforcement, variable neuroadaptive mechanisms, and neurochemical changes that together lead to altered homeostasis of the brain reward system. Addiction is hypothesized to be a cycle of progressive dysregulation of the brain reward system that results in the compulsive use and loss of control over drug taking and the initiation of behaviors associated with drug seeking. The view that addiction represents a pathological state of reward provides an approach to identifying the factors that contribute to vulnerability, addiction, and relapse in genetic animal models.  相似文献
