The foraging behavior consisted of three steps: searching, recruitment and transportation. Searching time was different for different foods; searching time for honey was longer than that for any other food tested. It was also affected by habitats with the searching time of fire ants in a litchi orchard being significantly longer than that for other habitats (p<0.01). However, the weight of the food had no obvious effect on the searching time. The recruitment of fire ant workers during foraging was regular, and there was a strong relationship between the number of recruited workers and the transportation time. When the food was too heavy to transport immediately into the nest, the number of recruited workers was maximum at 30 min after the food was initially found. For smaller sized food sources maximum recruitment of workers was possible at a shorter time and the food was more rapidly transported back to the nest. For different foods, the dynamics of recruitment were similar although the number of recruits was different. The weight of the food and the habitats also deeply affected the time spent on transportation.

Summary We examine how cost and benefit components of resource profitability affect recruitment in the giant tropical ant, Paraponera clavata. To vary resource profitability, we changed the quantity of artificial nectar baits presented to foragers and the distance of nectar baits from the nest. Both distance to and amount of resource affected quantitative aspects of recruitment. At increased distances foragers were less likely to recruit, and fewer workers were recruited to the resource area. The amount of nectar affected the tendency of foragers to recruit, but had no effect on the number of ants recruited. Variation in resource distance was also associated with qualitative changes in recruitment strategy. Foragers at distant sites recruited from the canopy rather than from the nest, and often transferred nectar to other workers for transport to the nest. Nectar transfer and extra-nidal recruitment significantly reduced the time required for resource collection. It may also have increased the ability of workers to specialize in specific foraging tasks. A portion of the colony's foraging force specialized spatially by remaining in distant foraging areas without returning to the nest. The flexible recruitment system of P. clavata increases colonial net energetic gain rates by concentrating foraging effort on resources yielding the highest net energetic rewards, and increases the competitive abilities of individual colonies at resource sites by decreasing collection times.

We measured individual decisions regarding the adjustments of time, distance and direction of foraging in Dinoponera quadriceps. We observed two colonies in an area of secondary Atlantic Forest, FLONA-ICMBio, in Northeastern Brazil. The workers were individually marked. We recorded the displacement of workers, their returns to the nest with and without food, the time spent searching for food, maximum and total distance, inter-trip latency and direction of trips. The time spent searching for food, maximum distance and transport velocity did not vary with food size. The previous trip success reduced the latency between foraging trips and increased the percentage of success on the next trip. However, this previous success did not demonstrate a significant variation relative to the time spent searching on the next trip or direction of search. The workers maintained an individual directional fidelity during foraging. The adjustments of these foraging variables under individual control contributed to the efficiency at the colony level. D. quadriceps is compatible with the central place theory and risk sensitivity model of behavior.

The allocation of foragers in red wood ants
Abstract. 1. We studied how colonies of the red wood ant, Formica polyctena , adjust the numbers of foragers allocated to different foraging trails. In a series of field experiments, foragers were marked and transferred from one nest to another, related nest, where they joined the foraging force. Transferred workers acted as a reserve of uncommitted, available foragers.
2. Previous work shows that each individual forager habitually uses one trail. We found that for an uncommitted forager, the influence of recruitment initially is stronger than that of directional fidelity. Transferred workers were likely to use trails leading to new food sources. When transferred to a new nest, foragers were not likely to use a trail in the same direction as their original trail in the donor nest.
3. After a week, transferred foragers tended to develop route fidelity. Even after bait was no longer present, they continued to use the trail that had formerly led to a bait source.
4. We examined how colonies adjust numbers on a trail by experimentally depleting some trails. Colonies usually did not compensate for depletion: foragers were not recruited to depleted trails.
5. In general, the dynamics of foraging in this species facilitate a consistent foraging effort rather than rapid adjustments of forager allocation.

Among all activities displayed by ant colonies, searching for food is essential for all individuals survival. However, many external activities are hazardous or restrictive for the entire society. Even though leaf-cutter ants are highly successful insects, they are subject to extreme aspects of foraging, as raindrops and wind. Although recruitment and food exploitation are known to change with temperature and humidity, barometric pressure changes and how they affect ant behavior remain unknown. We aimed to determine how an increase or decrease in barometric pressure might modify foraging strategies of the leaf-cutter ant Atta sexdens compared to steady pressure. The first modification observed in the workers behavior was the scouts greater promptness in leaving the nest when the barometric pressure decreased. Regard to the foragers, there was no difference in the number of individuals recruited for collecting leaves. However, it was cut and brought into the nest 1.5 and 2 times more leaves during the pressure drop, respectively. The reason for this foraging efficiency as a whole was ultimately the sum of the efficiency of each forager. The shifts in behavior, therefore, could be related to the indirect consequences of a pressure decrease, such as rainfall and strong winds, both strong constraints on ants on a trail. This is the first report of barometric pressure affecting the behavior of a social insect under controlled conditions.

By presenting different kinds of food sources to colonies ofM. sabuleti, we have demonstrated that this species regulates its foraging activity by altering the proportion of scouts that return to the nest to recruit nestmates after discovering a food source and by varying the number of nestmates recruited by a scout. These two parameters are related to the kind of food discovered. Our behavioral experiments showed that the probability that a scout returned to the nest decreased with a decreasing quantity of sucrose solution. In contrast, the number of returned scouts that elicited recruitment from the nest and the mean number of nestmates recruited by one of these scouts were independent of the quantity of the sucrose solution. Recruitment even occurred toward a 1- or 0.25-µl droplet of sucrose solution. When a scout discovered a large dead prey, a large drop of prey juice, a cluster of 30 dead fruit flies, or 1 isolated fruit fly, it always went back to the nest, but it elicited recruitment only when the food source was a large dead prey or a large drop of prey juice. No recruitment occurred when the food source was a single fruit fly and recruitment occurred only once in 30 trials when a cluster of 30 fruit flies was discovered.

Gnamptogenys moelleri nests in bromeliads and feeds on an array of food items, including dead and live animals, and nectar. Field data in Brazilian forests indicate that G. moelleri hunts solitarily, while retrieving is performed both by solitary workers for small items, or by a group of recruited workers for large items. This flexible foraging strategy was investigated in the laboratory through a series of experiments to assess the context in which recruitment is elicited. Three types of food were used: 50% honey solution, large insect prey, and cluster of small insects. For all food types the first encounter by a scout resulted in increased numbers of ants leaving the nest and finding the food in the arena. After finding liquid food or large prey, the forager returns to the nest and transmits information to nestmates about food location on the substrate. The successful scout repeatedly taps the sting on the ground, and recruited ants collectively retrieve the large insect to the nest. On the other hand, there is no transmission of information to nestmates about the location of small clumped prey, although the returning scout induces nestmates to leave the nest and hunt. Because foraging in G. moelleri is restricted mostly to the nest bromeliad, and small worker size (0.5 cm) precludes capturing large prey solitarily, recruitment behavior widens the spectrum of food items consumed by this ant species. Although recruitment behavior in ponerines has already been reported to vary with the type and size of a food source, this study also shows that the transmission of information about food location depends on the type of food found (large prey or liquid food versus cluster of small prey).

Spatial distribution of ant workers within the nest is a key element of the colony social organization contributing to the efficiency of task performance and division of labour. Spatial distribution must be efficiently organized when ants are highly starved and have to get food rapidly. By studying ants’ behaviour within the nest during the beginning of food recruitment, this study demonstrates how the spatial organization is affected by starvation and improves the efficiency and the speed of recruitment as well as the allocation of food. (1) In starved nests, nestmates left the deep part of the nest and crowded near the nest entrance. This modification of the spatial distribution is a local phenomenon concerning only the individuals situated in the first chamber near the nest entrance. These starved individuals have a higher probability of leaving the nest after a contact with recruiters than nestmates situated deeper in the nest. This strongly suggests that nestmates situated near the nest entrance have a low response threshold to the signals emitted by recruiters. Their higher responsiveness speeds up their exit to the foraging area and hence may increase the efficiency of highly starved colonies in exploiting new food opportunities. (2) In starved nests, the trajectory covered by recruiters between contacts with nestmates was nearly twice as small. For recruiters, this represented a gain of time in the allocation of food. As the recruitment process follows snowball dynamics, this gain of time by starved recruiters might also speed up the exploitation of food. This study evidences how the spatial distribution of individuals as a function of their motivational state might have a regulatory function in the recruitment process, which should be generic for many social species.

Summary Group recruitment during foraging was observed in a primitive ponerine ant,Amblyopone sp. (reclinata group) under laboratory condition. Workers searched for prey singly; however, if a item of prey was stung by a worker, other ants joined the attack. After the prey became immobile, one of the workers laid a trail directly toward the nest. This scout worker recruited additional workers (between 3 and 33). They formed a single file procession to the point of prey capture, and cooperatively transported the prey. A scout worker could stimulate nest workers to leave the nest without direct contact, and the recruited workers could trace the trail without guidance by the scout worker. This is the first report of recruitment behavior during foraging in the primitive antAmblyopone.

The von Bertalanffy rule (1960) predicts that low incubation temperature during larval development will result in larger adult body size. If larval development in social insects followed this rule, then low incubation temperature would induce the development of larger workers and possibly even sexuals. To test this prediction, the effect of incubation temperature on larval development, larval meal size, larval tending and worker recruitment to food in the fire ant, Solenopsis invicta was investigated. Temperatures tested where within the range at which brood remains viable.Contrary to the predictions of the von Bertalanffy rule, worker size was unaffected by incubation temperature, and sexuals were reared at the high rather than the low incubation temperature. Moreover, larval meal size, the rate of larval tending by workers and the total number of workers recruited to food were unaffected by temperature.Mechanisms regulating developmental and behavioral homeostasis were as follows: the duration of larval development and the rate of larval growth changed proportionately with temperature such that the mean and variation of pupal size was unaffected by incubation temperature. Larvae solicited at the same rate, swallowed at the same rate and swallowed for the same duration such that meal size was unaffected by incubation temperature. On the brood pile, fewer workers tended brood at higher incubation temperatures, but worker tempo increased; as a result, brood tending was not adversely affected by incubation temperature. The rate of worker recruitment to food sites outside the nest increased with temperature, but the duration of the recruitment effort decreased such that, over time, the same total number of workers was employed to retrieve food.Incubation humidity was also investigated. When brood chambers were less than 100% humid, workers recruited to food and tended larvae (retrieved, sorted and groomed them), but did not feed larvae. Eventually, larvae died of starvation and were cannibalized.

Food acquisition in central-place foraging animals demands efficient detection and retrieval of resources. Most ant species rely on a mass recruitment foraging strategy, which requires that some potential foragers remain at the nest where they can be recruited to food once resources are found. Because this strategy reduces the number of workers initially looking for food, it may reduce the food detection rate while increasing the postdiscovery food retrieval rate. In previous studies this tradeoff has been analyzed by computer simulation and mathematical models. Both kinds of models show that food acquisition rate is greatly influenced by food distribution and resource patch size: as food is condensed into fewer patches, the maximal acquisition rate is achieved by a shift to fewer initial searchers and more potential recruits. In general, these models show that a mass recruitment strategy is most effective when resources are clumped. We tested this prediction in two experiments by letting laboratory colonies of the Argentine ant (Linepithema humile) forage for resources placed in different distributions. When all prey were small, retrieval rate increased with increasing resource patch size, in support of foraging models. When prey were large, however, the mass of prey returned to the colony over time was much lower than when prey were small and widely distributed. As more ants reached a large prey item, the distance the prey item was transported decreased due to a greater emphasis on feeding rather than transport. Because Argentine ants can transport more biomass externally than they can ingest, food retrieval that depends only on ingestion can depress the biomass retrieval rate. Thus, our results generally support theoretical foraging models, but we show how prey size, through differential prey-handling behavior, can produce an outcome greatly different from that predicted only on the distribution of resources.

Summary Social organization allows a division of labor between reproduction and foraging, as well as a task allocation among foraging individuals. Therefore, a colony simultaneously exploiting various resources can use different ways of getting them. This work analyzes wood ant foraging tactics both at the collective and the individual level. The main issues are: (1) How does a wood ant colony respond to stable vs temporally and spatially variable resources in terms of worker force allocation? (2) How is retrieval of ephemeral but rich resources effected at the individual level? The results show a correspondence between resource stability and behavior. Ants visited stable resources continually and recruited to ephemeral ones. They also visited empty food sites at a low frequency suggesting territoriality and constant scanning. The results suggest that recruitment may involve defence of the resource, since only a small fraction of all the workers available carry the food home. Additional ants arriving at the resource are recruited from inside the nest, not by reallocating outdoor workers. The foragers also form two separate groups, one site-persistent and another site-flexible. These two forager groups may reflect specialization on two different kinds of diet: honeydew or insect prey (spatially and temporally stable vs unstable resources, respectively).Formica truncorum is thus an example of how sociality allows the use of two different foraging strategies simultaneously: one that is based on recruitment to ephemeral resources and another that is based on search persistance and memory.

The spatial structure of habitats contains physical barriers that restrict the performance of diverse behavioural tasks. In heterogeneous habitats, information acquisition may allow animals to improve the performance of diverse activities such as foraging and locomotion. Nonetheless, changes in locomotion performance and their effects on the foraging success of animals have been scarcely studied. We examined these relationships in the harvester ant Dorymyrmex goetschi (subfamily Dolichoderinae) under laboratory conditions. In an experimental arena, we offered a food patch located at a fixed distance from the nest entrance. Landscape heterogeneity was created using wooden cubes arranged in different types of spatial distribution. We video recorded the behaviour of different colonies and quantified the number of active foragers, number of head contacts per capita per inbound trip, path length by workers that transported a food load from the resource patch to the nest, time invested in inbound travels, and the number of prey captured per colony. During the initial phase of patch exploitation, the number of foragers and prey captured were significantly lower than during the half and final phases of the experiment. Landscapes with greater spatial heterogeneity increased travel time and diminished locomotion velocity. A multiple regression analysis revealed that greater antennal contacts and locomotion velocities increased prey removal. Therefore, in this study, we documented a formal link between variables that characterize the movement paths of individuals and the foraging success of a colony. Information transfer between individuals generated a collective work with a concomitant improvement of food exploitation.

This study considers the interplay between individual load-size selection and recruitment behavior in the leaf-cutting ant Atta cephalotes. Foraging workers anchor themselves on the leaf edge by their hind legs and pivot around them while cutting arcs from leaves. Since workers not only cut leaves but also lay chemical trails to recruit nestmates, we investigated whether there is conflict of motivation affecting the workers' decision either to quickly inform nestmates about a newly discovered food source, or instead to cut full-load leaf fragments, which could delay recruitment. Workers were presented with leaves of privet of three different grades of toughness (measured as leaf density=mass/area) as sources of different quality, and load-size selection and recruitment behavior by harvesting-satiated and harvesting-deprived workers were measured. The following results were obtained. (1) Leaf density affected individual load-size selection: both harvesting-satiated and harvesting-deprived workers were found to cut smaller leaf fragments from the denser leaves. (2) Harvesting-deprived workers cut smaller fragments than harvesting-satiated workers, and therefore saved cutting time. The fragments cut were smaller only during the initial phases of the recruitment process, when information about the discovery needed to be transferred. (3) Harvesting-deprived workers showed higher recruitment rates than harvesting-satiated workers. A considerable number of ants were observed to return to the nest unladen. During the initial phases, the ratio of laden/unladen workers was lower than that for harvesting-satiated workers, and increased with the development of the tograging process. (4) Scout workers confronted with familiar leaves ran back to the nest laying chemical trails without even contacting the leaves. They relied on olfactory cues to start recruiting nestmates, and leaf density played no role in their decisions. (5) When confronted with unfamiliar leaves, on the other hand, they assessed leaf quality by probing bites at the leaf edge, although no actual cuts occurred. In this situation, the resulting recruitment rates depended on physical leaf traits, being higher for the tenderer leaves. (6) Workers foraging on unfamiliar leaves cut smaller fragments than workers cutting familiar leaves, and most of them displayed trail-laying behavior when returning to the nest. The results support the hypothesis of a trade-off between time spent collecting and that invested to recruit nestmates. During the initial phases of exploitation of a newly discovered food source, workers reduced their individual carrying performance in order to return earlier to the colony for further recruitment.

We study the influence of food distance on the individual foraging behaviour of Lasius niger scouts and we investigate which cue they use to assess their distance from the nest and accordingly tune their recruiting behaviour. Globally, the number of U-turns made by scouts increases with distance resulting in longer travel times and duration of the foraging cycle. However, over familiar areas, home-range marking reduces the frequency and thereby the impact of U-turns on foraging times leading to a quicker exploitation of food sources than over unmarked set-ups. Regarding information transfer, the intensity of the recruitment trail reaching the nest decreases with increasing food distance for all set-ups and is even more reduced in the absence of home-range marking. Hence, the probability of a scout continuing to lay a trail changes along the homeward journey but in a different way according to home-range marking. Over unexplored setups, at a given distance from the food source, the percentage of returning trail-laying ants remains unchanged for all tested nest-feeder distances. Hence, the tuning of the trail recruiting signal by scouts was not influenced by an odometric estimate of the distance already travelled by the ants during their outward journey to the food. By contrast, over previously explored set-ups, a distance-related factor – that is the intensity of home-range marking – strongly influences their recruiting behaviour. In fact, over a home-range marked bridge, the probability of returning ants maintaining their trail-laying behaviour increases with decreasing food distance while the gradient of home-range marks even induces ants which have stopped laying a trail to resume this behaviour in the nest vicinity. We suggest that home-range marking laid passively by walking ants is a relevant cue for scouts to indirectly assess distance from the nest but also local activity level or foraging risks in order to adaptively tune trail recruitment and colony foraging dynamics.
