To assess the role of viruses in the bloom dynamics of Micromonaspusilla in the Gulf of Naples (Mediterranean Sea), variationsof host and virus abundance were followed over one annual cycleand in late winter–spring of three consecutive years.Micromonas pusilla was recorded from autumn to spring, withpeak values up to 6.6 x 103 cells ml–1, but was undetectablein summer. Free M.pusilla viruses were detectable in all seasons, with concentrations from 0.02 viruses ml–1 to 1.9 x 103viruses ml–1, exceeding host abundances only in one case.We found a great intraspecific variability in host susceptibilityto viruses present in natural samples, with viral titres rangingover one or two orders of magnitude for the same samples incubatedon different M.pusilla strains. Over the winter–springperiods, a highly dynamic situation was evident, with wide fluctuationsfor both host and virus abundances from one week to another. In some cases, peak host concentrations were accompanied byan increase in viral numbers, whereas in other cases the respectivefluctuations were uncoupled. Although fluctuations of M.pusillaabundance could be influenced by viral infection, there wasno evidence that viruses were able to terminate host blooms. The summer decline of M.pusilla populations did not appear tobe related to the impact of viral infection.  相似文献

The total number of planktonic bacteria in the upper mixed layerof the Bering Sea during the late spring-early summer periodranged between 1 and {small tilde}4 x 106 ml–1 (biomass10–40mg C m–3). In the northern Pacific, along 47–526N,the corresponding characteristics of the bacterioplankton densityin the upper mixed water layer were: total number 1–2x 106 cells ml–1 and biomass 15–46mg C m–3Below the thermocline at 50–100 m, the density of bacterioplanktonrapidly decreased. At 300 m depth, it stabilized at 0.1–0.2x 106 cells ml–1. The integrated biomass of bacterioplanktonin the open Bering Sea ranged between 1.2 and 3.6 g C m–2(wet biomass 6–18 g m–2) Its production per dayvaried from 2 to 23 mg C m–3 days–1 in the upper0–100 m. The numerical abundance of planktonic ciliatesin this layer was estimated to be from 3 to l0 x 103 cells l–1,and in the northern Pacific from 0.4 to 4.5 x 103 l–2.Their populations were dominated by naked forms of Strombidium,Strombilidium and Tontonia. In some shelf areas, up to 40% ofthe total ciliate population was represented by the symbioticciliate Mesodinium rubrum. The data on the integrated biomassof basic groups of planktonic microheterotrophs are also presented, and their importance in the trophic relationships in pelagiccommunities of subarctic seas is discussed.  相似文献

A series of short-term in situ experiments was conducted intwo Cape Cod embayments to estimate mortality rates of the toxicdinoflagellate, Gonyaulax tamarensis, resulting from grazingby zooplankton. Rates of grazing by the whole zooplankton communityand by specific zooplankton populations were measured at variouspoints in the G. tamarensis bloom cycle. The planktonic larvaeof the spionid polychaete Polydora ligni and the tintinnid ciliateFavella sp. were important grazers in the systems studied. Gonyaulax-specificclearance rates effected by Polydora ranged from 0.02 to 0.5ml individual–1 h–1; for Favella the range was aboutan order to magnitude lower. Peak population densities wereclose to 900 and 400 individuals 1–1 for P. ligni andFavella, respectively. Whether measured directly or predictedas the product of individual clearance rates and numerical abundance, rates of grazing were often higher than estimated algal divisionrates in years when blooms failed to develop. A simulation modelcorroborated the results of the field study, demonstrating thatgrazing can be a significant source of mortality during blooms, and can suppress bloom development when grazers are abundant.  相似文献

From June through August, 1985, a bloom of the cyanobacteriumMicrocyslis aeruginosa was observed in the upper Potomac Riverreaching densities of 193 x 106 cells 1–1 and 83% of totalcells in the surface mixed layer. However, in regions typifiedby salinities of 1–2 p.p.t. immediately down-river, thealga disappeared from the phytoplankton assemblage, never contributing>17% of total phytoplankton numbers. In an attempt to determinethe effect of increasing salinity on limiting horizontal distributionsof cyanobacteria blooms in the Potomac River estuary, threelaboratory experiments were conducted. Bloom samples collectedfrom the river were exposed to daily salinity increases of 1–2p.p.t. through the addition of NaCl or a complement of fullsea salts. Relative to samples receiving no salt supplement, densities of Microcyslis spp. declined in salinity-stressedsamples. However, total cyanobacteria remained constant or increaseddue to rapid growth of Aphanizomenon. The addition of a mixtureof full sea salts favored aggregation of cyanobacteria, yieldingan average of 132 cells colony–1; 36 cells colony–1were observed in populations maintained in river water and NaCl-supplementedsamples. Chlorophyll concentrations declined slightly relativeto assemblages receiving no salt additions while carbon fixationwas reduced in salinity-stressed assemblages. These resultssuggest that salinities from 0.5 to 7 p.p.t., typical of theoligohaline region of the Potomac River, could limit the distributionof Microcystis-dominated blooms down-estuary. In addition, increasingsalinities should result in the aggregation of photosyntheticallyinhibited cells and, through prolonged exposure to increasingosmotic stress, produce large, rapidly sinking detrital particlessupporting microbial decomposition in oligohaline and mesohalineregions of the lower Potomac River estuary, perhaps perpetuatinghigh microbial oxygen demand and anoxia in this portion of theriver/estuary.  相似文献

Response of the phytoplankton community to bottom-up (nutrients, organic carbon source) and top-down (fish) manipulations, bothsingly and together, were studied daily during a 3 week periodin July 1993 by using eight 50 m3 mesocosms in the coastal northernBaltic Sea. Nutrient additions (once per week) invoked a seriesof blooms of Eutreptiella gymnastica Throndsen (Euglenophyceae)(up to 13 x 103 cells ml–1) which formed the major part(60–90%) of the total autotrophic biomass. After rapiddepletion of nutrients (2–3 days) from the surface layer(0–6 m) downwards migration and a subsequent peak of E.gymnasticain the lower part of the water columns (6–12 m) followed.Settled material collected from the bottom of the enclosurescontained a considerable amount of E.gymnastica cells and restingcysts. Nevertheless, sinking loss rates of E.gymnastica wereestimated to be less than 1% day–1 of the suspended cellnumbers. The fate of E.gymnastica blooms was estimated to begrazing through mesozooplankton. However, provided the nutrientsare plentiful in the water column, the growth potential of E.gymnasticaappears to exceed the ambient grazing pressure. If the nutrientsbecome depleted, it seems to be effectively controlled by mesozooplanktongrazing, which is probably limiting the likelihood of massiveE.gymnastica blooms in the coastal Baltic Sea. Our study suggeststhat E.gymnastica appears to be a fast-growing fugitive (bloom)species with flexible behavioural (vertical migration) and lifehistory (cyst formation) adaptations which is able to exertdominant role and direct trophic relations similar to otherbloom species adapted for decaying turbulence and high nutrientenvironments.  相似文献

A recurrent and localized dinoflagellate bloom in a Mediterranean beach   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
A recurrent, prolonged and singular bloom of Alexandrium tayloriBalech in an open beach (La Fosca, Spain, NW Mediterranean)is described. Alexandrium taylori appears at several placesalong a wide area of the NW Mediterranean (Costa Brava) duringthe summer, reaching concentrations up to 105 cells l–1,but it only proliferates persistently, massively (densities>106 cells l–1) and recurrently during August in LaFosca beach. The A.taylori bloom can be considered a manifestationof large-scale proliferation in a restricted area, where couplingbetween resting cysts in the sediment and bloom outbreak isnot a major factor compared to the interaction of local environmentalconditions with the planktonic organism's life history. Fromobservations of environmental conditions (the environmentalwindow) and the multiscale spatio-temporal distributions andlife history of A.taylori, we describe the bloom dynamics andanswer some critical questions about the different phases ofthe bloom. Some of these answers are: (i) the source of theA.taylori population is widespread offshore and is not locateddirectly at the beach; (ii) high cell densities are reachedand maintained with a moderate in situ growth and low loss rates;(iii) temporary cysts act as a reserve of the population.  相似文献

During the spring of 1994, we determined the factors responsiblefor the decline of the seasonal diatom bloom in the Gullmarfjord, on the west coast of Sweden. Four species constituted>75% of the biomass—Detonula confervacea, Chaetocerosdiadema, Skeletonema costatum and Thalassiosira nordenskioeldii—reachingconcentrations of 4900, 350, 8200 and 270 cells ml–1,respectively. Growth of phytoplankton was exponential (growthrate = 0.12 day–1) from 3 to 21 March, after which a galewith winds >15 m s–1 caused massive aggregation. Amaximum of 130 p.p.m. (v/v) of marine snow aggregates was observedby in situ video at the peak of the bloom. Critical concentrations(Jackson, Deep-Sea Res., 37, 1197–1211, 1990) were similarto observed showing that coagulation theory could explain thesudden decline of the bloom. The heterotrophic dinoflagellateGyrodinium cf. spirale increased exponentially after the peakof the bloom with maximum (temperature-adjusted) growth rates. After the rapid aggregation and sedimentation of the bloom, they were able to control any further growth of diatoms. Nitrateand silicate were never depleted, but phosphate may have beenlimiting by the end of the study period. We conclude that massaggregation during a gale marked the end of the bloom, and thatintense grazing by heterotrophic dinoflagellates prevented anysubsequent increase of diatoms.  相似文献

A sediment trap study was conducted at Daya Bay, South ChinaSea, to investigate the relationships between encystment andpopulation dynamics of Scrippsiella trochoidea from December1999 to January 2001. A dense bloom of S. trochoidea occurredduring the study period from August to September 2000, withthe maximum cell number of 3.18 x 104 cells mL–1.Two morphotypes of cysts, one with a thick calcareous wall (calcifiedcyst) and another without the obvious calcareous cover (non-calcifiedcyst), were observed during this investigation. The morphologicaland excystment characteristics of these two cyst types werestudied as well. Mass encystments of S. trochoidea, with themaximum of 3.05 x 105 cysts m–2 d–1for calcified cyst, and 1.54 x 107 cysts m–2 d–1for non-calcified cyst, coincided with the maximum abundanceof the vegetative cells. Encystment caused the transfer of atotal of 2.24–4.49 x 108 cells m–2 vegetativecells from the water column to the sea bottom during the bloomand resulted in a considerable loss of the bloom population.High assemblages of cysts of S. trochoidea were detected inthe surface sediments as well. This rich ‘seed bed’in the surface sediments caused by the high efficiency of encystmentafter blooms acting as a benthic reservoir for future vegetativepopulation, together with the short dormant period (15–26days) and high germination rate (50–90%), may explainthe repeated occurrence of S. trochoidea blooms in Daya Bay.  相似文献

The chain-forming dinoflagellate Gynmodinium catenatum Grahamcauses recurrent outbreaks of paralytic shellfish poisoning(PSP) in the Galician Rias Bajas (northwest Spain). A sedimentsurvey in Ria de Vigo in April 1986 indicated that the highestconcentrations of cysts of this species were located in themiddle sections of the ria, with maximum abundance of 310 cystscm–3. The effects of temperature, growth medium compositionand irradiance on the germination of laboratory-produced restingcysts were investigated. Newly formed cysts required very littletime for maturation, as excystment was possible within 2 weeksof encystment. Growth media did not affect germination success. In contrast, the excystment rate was retarded signifiantly indarkness. Germination was also strongly affected by temperature, with {small tilde}75% excystment success at 22–28°Cand little or no germination below 11°C after 1 month ofincubation. In culture, the optimum growth rate of vegetativecells was between 22 and 28°C, the highest rate being 0.53divisions day–1 at 24°C. Growth did not occur at temperatures< 11°C or >30°C. These results are important withrespect to the different hypotheses proposed to explain theinitiation of G.catenatum blooms in the Galician Rias Bajasand Northern Portugal. The pattern of G.catenatum bloom developmentalong this coast has been related to seasonal upwelling in thearea, with major blooms occurring during the autumn as warmeroffshore surface water is transported towards the coast whenupwelling relaxes. The landward transport of established offshorepopulations of G.catenatum with the warm surface layer remainsa viable explanation for the observed blooms within the rias, but alternatively, our data suggest that cysts within the riascan provide the inoculum population at times conducive to growthand bloom formation. Even though newly formed G.catenatum cystshave a very short maturation time and can germinate in darknessacross a wide temperature range, bloom development will be significantonly during the late summer and early autumn, since in othermonths light levels at the sediment surface and temperaturesthroughout the water column are too low for significant germinationor growth.  相似文献

In October 1988 a bloom of Gyrodinium cf. aureolum was recordedalong a transect across the continental shelf reaching celldensities of 1300 ml–1 and chlorophyll a concentrationsup to 16 µg 1–1. The bloom was restricted to a nutrient-richthin surface layer of 10 m depth at the beginning of seasonalpycnocline. Hydrological conditions showed a particular salinitydistribution. The phytoplankton community was dominated by G.cf. aureolum but the coexisting flora presented a great diversity.UV-absorbing pigments were recorded in the community.  相似文献

The chrysophyte Olisthodiscus luteus is not ingested by Synchaetacecilia. It inhibits the feeding on other, acceptable food atO. luteus densities as low as 50 cells ml–1 and reducessurvival and reproduction at O. luteus densities > 103 cellsml–1. The possible mechanisms and implications of thisphenomenon for the distribution and abundance of S. ceciliaare discussed.  相似文献

Phytopiankton abundance. species composition and primary productionof the Gulf of Naples were investigated during an autumn bloomin November 1985. Hydrographic data and surface phytoplanktonsamples were collected during a 3 day cruise, whereas investigationson in situ primary production and phytoplankton vertical distributionwere conducted from a second boat on three different dates.A coast-offshore gradient was recorded for most of the chemicaland biological parameters analysed. At stations closer to thecoast, which were affected by land run-off, phytoplankton populationsattained concentrations of 2.5 106 cells l–1 with amarked dominance of diatoms belonging to the genera Thalassiosiraand Chaetoceros. The most striking character of the system wasa remarkably high carbon assimilation rate (up to 1.04 g C m–2day–2) at stations closer to the coast. The causativemechanism for this bloom appeared to be land-derived nutrientenrichment, possibly enhanced by autumn rains, followed by aperiod of favourable meteorological conditions, which occursrecurrently in the region for a brief period around November, known locally as ‘St Martin's Summer’. We hypothesizethat a similar mechanism can stimulate phytoplankton growthmore than once every year. since high-stability penods followingmeteoro logical perturbations can occur several times in temperateregions of the northern hemisphere in autumn.  相似文献

Feeding in predacious estuarine ciliates was investigated ina series of laboratory experiments using a new method of preylabeling which facilitates microscopic indentification of ingestedprey items. Ingestion rates of Mesodinium pulex, Euplotes vannusand E.woodruffi were estimated using the appearance, insidethe predator, of bacteriovorous ciliates (Metanophrys sp., Cyclidiumsp.and Pleuronema sp ) labeled with fluorescent microspheres. Preyremain motile and have presumably unaltered surface characteristics.Ingestion rates of log-growth phase predators increased withprey density. Mesodinium pulex ingested 0 15–0.32 cellsh–1 over a prey concentration of 60–2300 ml–1.Maximum ingestion rates of E. woodruffi and E. vannus were 4.5and 3.4 cells h–1 respectively, estimated at prey abundancesof 75 and 172 cells ml–1 respectively. Comparisons offeeding rates on prey of different sizes, and the effects ofstarvation, indicated that ingestion is likely limited by differentfactors in ‘raptorial’ (M pulex) and ‘filterfeeding’ (Euplotes spp.) predators.  相似文献

Carbon (C) fixation and nitrogen (N) assimilation rates havebeen estimated from 14C and 15N techniques for a 12 month periodin a Scottish sea loch. The maximum rate of nitrogen assimilated(29.92 mmol N m–2 day–1) was in April at the mostseaward station; similar high rates were experienced duringMay at the other stations. Carbon fixation rates were maximal(488–4047 mg C m–2day–1) at the time of highphytoplankton biomass (maximum 8.3 mg m–3 chlorophylla) during May, whilst nitrate concentrations remained >0.7µ.mol l–1. C:N assimilation ratios suggest nitrogenlimitation only during the peak of the spring bloom, althoughat times nitrogen (nitrate and ammonium) concentration fellto 0.2 µmol l–1 in the following months. The verticalstability of the water column, influenced by tidal and riverineflushing, varied along the axis of the loch, resulting in markeddifferences between sampling stations. Although ammonium waspreferentially assimilated by phytoplankton, >50% of productionwas supported by nitrate uptake and only during the summer monthswas the assimilation of ammonium quantitatively important.  相似文献

Summer phytoplankton succession in Ellis Fjord, eastern Antarctica   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Spring phytoplankton communities in the water column of EllisFjord are characterized by diatoms originating from the bottomsea-ice strand community. Upon ice breakout in early summer, these are replaced by blooms of the phytoflagellates, Phaeocystispouchetii, Cryptomonas cryophila, Pyramimonas gelidicola, silicoflagellatcsand dinoflagellates. The narrow entrance of the fjord and thedevelopment of summer stratification is probably limiting theavailability of nutrients and containing the magnitude of thesmall bloom (maximum 2.8 106 cells l–1).  相似文献

The growth of juvenile Bithynia tentaculata (Proso-branchia,Bithyniidae) was measured under controlled laboratory conditionsover 18 months. The animals were fed with different concentrationsof suspended food (Chlamydomonas reinhardii at 2, 000 cells.ml–1and at 10, 000 cells.ml–1), solid food (lettuce) and combinationsof both (lettuce with 2, 000 cells.ml–1 and with 10, 000cells.ml–1 Chlamydomonas). The growth of all animals wasmeasured weekly, and after 1 years final shell sizes, shelldry weights and ash-free dry weights, as well as soft body dryweights and ash-free dry weights were determined. Survival rateof the animals increased from 20% when fed with 2, 000 algalcells.ml–1 to 75% with lettuce and 10, 000 cells.ml–1as food. Final shell sizes and shell weights were not influencedby food, but soft body dry weights were significantly reducedwhen animals were fed on suspended food only. Reproduction (i.e.egg laying) was observed at the end of the second summer whenlettuce (with or without algal addition) was given as food. The ecological consequences of these results are discussed. Vertical profiles were made at one offshore station and onecoastal station, on 4-5 September 1996, in the south-easternSkagerrak. The surface water of the two stations differed significantlywith respect to both temperature and salinity, as the outerstation (A) was situated in high-saline water originating fromthe North Sea, while the low-saline surface water at the innerstation (B) was influenced by the Baltic current. Virus-likeparticle (VLP) abundance was 5 x 109–25 x 1091–1H in the 0-50 m water column. Maximal VLP values were foundin the surface water, although a lower number was detected inthe low-saline surface water (0 m depth) at station B. The abundance and biomass of marine planktonic ciliates in BorgeBay, Signy Island, were determined at monthly intervals betweenApril 1990 and June 1991. At least 24 different ciliate taxawere recorded from samples preserved in Lugol's iodine, includingthe tintinnids Codonellopsis balechi, Cymalocylis convallaria,Laackmaniella naviculaefera and Salpingella sp., and the aloricatetaxa Didinium sp. and Mesodinium rubrum. Ciliate abundance andbiomass exhibited a clear seasonal cycle with high values duringthe austral summer and low values in the austral winter. Abundanceranged from 0.3 103l–1 in September to 2.3 103l–1in January, while biomass ranged from 0.5 µg C l–1in October to 12.6 µg C l–1 in December. Small ciliatesdominated abundance throughout the year, and biomass duringwinter. Larger ciliates contributed most to biomass during summer.Aloricate ciliates were common throughout the year, while tintinnidscontributed substantially to abundance and biomass only duringsummer. Salpingella sp. was the commonest tintinnid, but C.convallariacontributed most to tintinnid biomass. The seasonal patternof ciliate abundance and biomass matched that of chlorophylla concentration and bacterial biomass, suggesting tight trophiccoupling between ciliates and other components of the pelagicmicrobial community. 1Present address: Scott Polar Research Institute, Universityof Cambridge, Lensfield Road, Cambridge CB2 1ER, UK  相似文献

The first documented Dinophysis bloom from Greek coastal watersassociated with a diarrhetic shellfish toxins outbreak was recordedin January 2000 during the HAB monitoring program in ThermaikosGulf. A species with morphological features similar to D. acuminataClaparède and Lachmann dominated this bloom. MaximumD. cf. acuminata abundance (85.4 x 103 cells L–1) appearedin February 2000. In 2001, high numbers of D. cf. acuminata(5 x 103 cells L–1) were recorded in April under conditionsof weak thermal stratification, while in 2002 maximum numbers(37 x 103 cells L–1) of the same species were found inFebruary under low temperature levels (11.5–12.5°C).All Dinophysis blooms persisted for no more than 4 months. Inaddition to cells resembling typical D. cf. acuminata, cellsof similar shape but smaller in size were observed at differentstages of the blooms. Other observations include couplets oflarge and small-sized cells, and also a larger robust form witha dense granular cytoplasm. The D. cf. acuminata populationalways presented a stratified vertical distribution with verticalpeaks positioned in or just above the pycnocline. Among thephysico-chemical parameters, water temperature appears to bethe most important factor influencing the distribution of Dinophysisabundance.  相似文献

The spawning rate of laboratory-reared Centropages typicus fedHymenomonas elongala increases with food concentration, up toa value of {small tilde}2800 µg C (16 500 cells) ml–1.An alternation of a low food (1000 cells ml–1) and highfood concentration (16 500 cells ml–1) is not favourableto egg release when its periodicity is 1 or 2 days, whereasit may be of advantage if it is longer (3–6 days). Inthe latter case, Centropages typicus will benefit best fromthe rich food diet if this coincides with (or just follows)the last moult.  相似文献
