Density, age structure, and growth rates of wild brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis)and brown trout (Salmo trutta)in Whetstone Brook in northcentral Massachusetts were monitored for 4 years before and 3 years during limestone treatment to mitigate acidic conditions. The population density of brook trout increased significantly during treatment. Liming did not have any significant effects on the growth rates of brook trout or brown trout. Actual survival rates of brook trout and brown trout were not calculated due to the low density of both species, but more older individuals of both species were captured during the treatment period. Fulton condition factors (an index of fish condition) increased significantly for both brook trout and brown trout during treatment. Seven-day in situ bioassays of brown trout and rainbow trout demonstrated that liming improved the chemical environment for fish in Whetstone Brook. During a pretreatment bioassay in 1987, 100% rainbow trout mortality was observed at both the control and treatment stations in Whetstone Brook. Brown trout mortality was 67% in the control station and 70% in the treatment station. The pH during the 1987 bioassay averaged 4.90 in the control station and 4.99 in the treated station. During a bioassay conducted in 1990 after treatment began, rainbow trout mortality was 100% in the control station and 0% in the treatment station. Brown trout mortality was 17% in the control station and 0% in the treatment station. The pH during the 1990 bioassay averaged 5.23 in the control station and 6.60 in the treatment station. Analysis of total aluminum in the gills of fish from the 1990 bioassay revealed higher levels in fish from the control station than in those from the treatment station.  相似文献

Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae is a myxozoan parasite of salmonids and freshwater bryozoans, which causes proliferative kidney disease (PKD) in the fish host. To test which fish species are able to transmit T. bryosalmonae to bryozoans, an infection experiment was conducted with 5 PKD-sensitive fish species from different genera. Rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, brown trout Salmo trutta, brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis, grayling Thymallus thymallus and northern pike Esox lucius were cohabitated with T. bryosalmonae-infected Fredericella sultana colonies and then subsequently cohabitated with statoblast-reared parasite free Bryozoa. Statoblasts from infected colonies were tested by PCR to detect cryptic stages of T. bryosalmonae, which may indicate vertical transmission of the parasite. In this study, brown trout and brook trout were able to infect Bryozoa, while there was no evidence that rainbow trout and grayling were able to do so. Few interstitial kidney stages of the parasite were detected by immunohistochemistry in brown trout and brook trout, while rainbow trout and grayling showed marked proliferation of renal interstitial tissue and macrophages with numerous parasite cells. Intraluminal stages in the kidney tubules were only detected in brown trout and rainbow trout. In contrast to previous observations, pike was not susceptible to PKD in these trials according to the results of T. bryosalmonae-specific PCR. No DNA of T. bryosalmonae was detected in any statoblast.  相似文献

Heat shock (25° C) of 10° C-acclimated rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss led to increases in heat shock protein 70 (hsp70) mRNA in blood, brain, heart, liver, red and white muscle, with levels in blood being amongst the highest. Hsp30 mRNA also increased with heat shock in all tissues with the exception of blood. When rainbow trout blood was heat shocked in vitro , both hsp70 and hsp30 mRNA increased significantly. In addition, these in vitro experiments demonstrated that blood from fish acclimated to 17° C water had a lower hsp70 mRNA heat shock induction temperature than did 5° C acclimated fish (20 v. 25° C). The hsp30 mRNA induction temperature (25° C), however, was unaffected by thermal acclimation. While increases in hsp70 mRNA levels in blood may serve as an early indicator of temperature stress in fish, tissue type, thermal history and the particular family of hsp must be considered when evaluating stress by these molecular means.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to investigate the digestibility of pumpkin seed cake (PSC) for the rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum, 1792), and effects on performance and product quality traits of four different fish species when PSC partially replaced fishmeal in extruded diets. A digestibility trial was carried out to determine apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) for crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE) and gross energy (GE) of PSC fed to rainbow trout. In subsequent growth trials, effects on performance and morphological traits and fillet colour values of four different fish species [rainbow trout; brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill, 1814); African sharptooth catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822); and wels catfish, Silurus glanis (Linnaeus, 1758)] were evaluated when 60% of fishmeal protein of a reference diet was replaced by PSC protein (based on digestible CP). Nutrient ADC of PSC were high (CP: 89%, EE: 88% and GE: 84%). No significant effects on growth and only minor effects on fillet colour were detected in the trials. However, replacing fishmeal with PSC at the chosen level affected morphological traits and feed conversion in all four species to different extents. Replacement effects of PSC should be tested at lower levels of inclusion before conclusions are drawn on its suitability in fish diets.  相似文献

Pair and group experiments were conducted to determine whether differences exist in feeding success between juvenile diploid and triploid salmonids in a competitive situation. In the pair experiments, 22 pairs (one diploid and one triploid) of size-matched Quebec-strain brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis (7·2–46·3 g) were fed an unlimited number of pellets three times a day for 5 days. Dominance was assigned to the fish which ate the most pellets within each pair. In the group experiments, groups of three diploid and three triploid size-matched fish were fed a restricted ration three times a day for 5 days. Hierarchical rank within the group was assigned based on the number of pellets consumed by each fish. The group experiment was repeated 10 times with Atlantic salmon Salmo salar (5·1–62·7 g), Quebec-strain brook trout (11·8-110·8 g), and large UNB-strain brook trout (18·2–33·0 g), and 12 times with smaller UNB-strain brook trout (0·6–2·0 g). A statistically significant difference in rank between ploidies was found only for the smaller UNB-strain brook trout in the group experiments, with diploids dominant over triploids. This suggests that there may be a difference in competitive feeding success between diploid and triploid brook trout early in development, but that this difference diminishes as the fish grow.  相似文献

Analyzed with regard to their slaughter weights and flesh quality 78‐month‐old diploid and triploid rainbow trout (full sibs) were reared together in a pond after tagging at an age of 12 months. Triploids had higher body weights and carcass percentages than diploids (6 kg vs 4 kg and 66% vs 52%). Triploid fish also displayed lower electrical conductivity values and darker (L* value) and redder (a* value) flesh color. The fillets of the triploid trout contained more crude fat and less moisture than the diploids (6% vs 3% and 68% vs 74%, respectively). No effect of ploidy was found with regard to the protein contents. Triploid rainbow trout had larger mean white and intermediate muscle fiber areas than diploid fish in the dorsal and pelvic fin regions. In the pelvic fin part, the white muscle fiber areas were larger than in the dorsal fin part. In conclusion, adult triploid rainbow trout grow faster especially by fiber hypertrophy and have better flesh quality parameters than diploid fish.  相似文献

1. Ecologists have struggled to describe general patterns in the impacts of predators on stream prey, particularly at large, realistic spatial and temporal scales. Among the confounding variables in many systems is the presence of multiple predators whose interactions can be complex and unpredictable. 2. We studied the interactions between brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and larval two‐lined salamanders (Eurycea bislineata), two dominant vertebrate predators in New England stream systems, by examining patterns of two‐lined salamander abundance in stream reaches above and below waterfalls that are barriers to fish dispersal, by measuring the effects of trout on salamander density and activity using a large‐scale manipulation of brook trout presence, and by conducting a small‐scale laboratory experiment to study how brook trout and larval two‐lined salamanders affect each other's prey consumption. 3. We captured more salamanders above waterfalls, in the absence of trout, than below waterfalls where trout were present. Salamander density and daytime activity decreased following trout addition to streams, and salamander activity shifted from aperiodic to more nocturnal with fish. Analysis of stomach contents from our laboratory experiment revealed that salamanders eat fewer prey with trout, but trout eat more prey in the presence of salamanders. 4. We suggest that as predators in streams, salamanders can influence invertebrate prey communities both directly and through density‐ and trait‐mediated interactions with other predators.  相似文献

Diploid and triploid brown trout Salmo trutta were acclimated for 6 weeks on two feeding regimes (floating and sinking). Thereafter, aggression and surface feeding response were compared between pairs of all diploid, all triploid and diploid and triploid S. trutta in an experimental stream. In each pair‐wise matching, fish of similar size were placed in allopatry and rank was determined by the total number of aggressive interactions recorded. Dominant individuals initiated more aggression than subordinates, spent more time defending a territory and positioned themselves closer to the surface food source (Gammarus pulex), whereas subordinates occupied the peripheries. In cross ploidy trials, diploid S. trutta were more aggressive than triploid, and dominated their sibling when placed in pair‐wise matchings. Surface feeding, however, did not differ statistically between ploidy irrespective of feeding regime. Triploids adopted a sneak feeding strategy while diploids expended more time defending a territory. In addition, we also tested whether triploids exhibit a similar social dominance to diploids when placed in allopatry. Although aggression was lower in triploid pairs than in the diploid and triploid pairs, a dominance hierarchy was also observed between individuals of the same ploidy. Dominant triploid fish were more aggressive and consumed more feed items than subordinate individuals. Subordinate fish displayed a darker colour index than dominant fish suggesting increased stress levels. Dominant triploid fish, however, appeared to be more tolerant of subordinate individuals and did not display the same degree of invasive aggression as seen in the diploid and diploid or diploid and triploid matchings. These novel findings suggest that sterile triploid S. trutta feed similarly but are less aggressive than diploid trout. Future studies should determine the habitat choice of triploid S. trutta after release and the interaction between wild fish and triploids during the breeding season prior to utilization of triploids as an alternative management strategy within freshwater fisheries.  相似文献

Anti-proteinase activity has been found in seminal plasma of eight teleost fish species: brown trout, rainbow trout, brook trout, lake whitefish, bream, northern pike, Danube salmon and burbot. This activity correlated with seminal plasma protein and sperm concentrations. Using a mammalian (bovine) trypsin for detecting proteinase inhibitors it was found for the first time that there are species-specific electrophoretic profiles of anti-proteinase activity. One to three bands could be identified by this method. However, additional proteinase inhibitors could be identified by using fish (cod) trypsin. These inhibitors were detected in seminal plasma of salmonids and coregonids and have a slow migration rate. Fast-migrating proteinase inhibitors were present in rainbow, brown and brook trout, northern pike, whitefish and burbot. These inhibitors could be detected in brook and brown trout by using either trypsins. However, they were detected only with bovine trypsin in rainbow trout, northern pike, whitefish and burbot. These results suggest that multiple forms of serine proteinase inhibitors exist in seminal plasma of teleost fish and they differ in their affinity toward serine proteinases. Seminal plasma serine proteinase inhibitors of rainbow trout migrated during electrophoresis similarly to blood plasma proteinase inhibitors, and suggests that the two inhibitors may be similar or the same. Anti-proteinase specific activity was similar in blood and seminal plasma. Proteinase inhibitors of fish seminal plasma seem to be an important part of sperm physiology, possibly related to protection of spermatozoa. Staining for detection of serine proteinase inhibitors also allowed detection of presence of nonspecific esterase in seminal plasma of most species.  相似文献

Triploidy can occur naturally or be induced in fish and shellfish during artificial propagation in order to produce sterile individuals. Fisheries managers often stock these sterile triploids as a means of improving angling opportunities without risking unwanted reproduction of the stocked fish. Additionally, the rearing of all‐triploid individuals has been suggested as a means to reduce the possibility of escaped aquaculture fish interbreeding with wild populations. Efficient means of determining if an individual is triploid or diploid are therefore needed both to monitor the efficacy of triploidy‐inducing treatments and, when sampling fish from a body of water that has a mixture of diploids and triploids, to determine the ploidy of a fish prior to further analyses. Currently, ploidy is regularly measured through flow cytometry, but this technique typically utilizes a fresh blood sample. This study presents an alternative, cost‐effective method of determining ploidy by analysing amplicon‐sequencing data for biallelic single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). For each sample, heterozygous genotypes are identified and the likelihoods of diploidy and triploidy are calculated based on the read counts for each allele. The accuracy of this method is demonstrated using triploid and diploid brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) genotyped with a panel of 234 SNPs and Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) genotyped with a panel of 298 SNPs following the GT‐seq methodology of amplicon sequencing.  相似文献

Bile pigments in the bile of the rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, tilapia, Tilapia nilotica, and pejerrey, Odonthetes bonariensis, were analyzed by HPLC and TLC.

Major bile pigments of rainbow trout and pejerrey were bilirubin glucuronides and ditauro-bilirubin, respectively. Ditaurobilirubin was not detected in rainbow trout and bilirubin glucuronides were scarcely found in pejerrey. Biliverdin seemed to be the sole bile pigment in tilapia, but it was a minor component in the other fish. These results are in accord with the previous reports in which the diversity of bile pigment composition was demonstrated in some fish.  相似文献

The ratios of Rb to Cs contents were studied in five fish species from seven lakes located in the Patagonia Andean Range, Argentina in order to trace fish diet. The species studied were native velvet catfish (Diplomistes viedmensis) and creole perch (Percichthys trucha), and exotic brown trout (Salmo trutta), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), and brook trout (Salvenilus fontinalis). Rainbow trout specimens from two farms were also studied, as well as fish food items and native mussels (Diplodon chilensis). Rb and Cs concentrations were determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis. A positive correlation of Cs concentration in the muscle of velvet catfish with fish length was observed, probably associated with the long biological half-life of this element in this species, whereas the Rb concentration remained constant, hence inhibiting the use of Rb-Cs ratios as a tracer in this case. Seasonal variations observed for rainbow trout and Cs concentration background bias in one of the lakes studied are also a limiting factor to the use of Rb-Cs ratios as a diet tracer. Rb-Cs ratios allowed clear differentiation of rainbow trout raised in farms from the natural specimens that lived in the same environment, in agreement with Rb-Cs ratios determined in both diets. Rb-Cs ratios in rainbow trout showed significant differences between Rivadavia and Futalaufquen lakes compared to Moreno and Nahuel Huapi lakes, which could be associated with a higher participation of plankton in the diet in the first case. No relevant variations in Rb-Cs ratios of brown trout were observed, probably because of the similarity in the diet.  相似文献

Critical thermal maximum (CTmax) is widely used to measure upper thermal tolerance in fish but is rarely examined in embryos. Upper thermal limits generally depend on an individual's thermal history, which molds plasticity. We examined how thermal acclimation affects thermal tolerance of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) embryos using a novel method to assess CTmax in embryos incubated under three thermal regimes. Warm acclimation was associated with an increase in embryonic upper thermal tolerance. However, CTmax variability was markedly higher than is typical for juvenile or adult salmonids.  相似文献

Survival time of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis Mitchill) at low pH was directly related to size, and inversely related to temperature. Between pH 2.50 and 3.25 an increase in pH by increments of 0.25 each led to a 2–3 fold increase in survival time. At higher pH's (3.25–3.75) elevations in pH by the same increments each produced a 3–5 fold increase. Brook trout tested at pH 3.35 and 3.50 showed maximum survival times in June-August. Members of seven inbred lines of brook trout were tested for acid tolerance; the lines differed markedly providing strong evidence that acid tolerance is hereditary. Tests involving either intercrossed or backcrossed offspring of tolerant or intolerant parentals demonstrated intermediate survival in 12.5% of all experiments and heterosis in 66.7% of the tests. Differences in survival of inbred lines were the most marked at pH 3.25. Exposure for 1 week at pH 3.75 resulted in a 20–25% decrease in survival time of 18 fish tested at pH 2.50 and 3.00. Out of a total of 24 trout (17 g) tested at pH 3.75 two highly tolerant individuals were still alive after 6.1 weeks. Thus it is likely that a strain resistant to a pH below 4.1, the previously recorded lower limit, can be developed by selective breeding.  相似文献

We have studied the lipid composition of low- and high-density lipoproteins from the blood sera of female rainbow trout Salmo irideus L. and whitefish Coregonus lavaretus L. Phospholipids prevail in all lipoprotein fractions, and phosphatidylcholine is dominant among them. Species-specific features of lipid fractions depend on ecological conditions under which these fish exist: rainbow trout is an almost domesticated species, whereas whitefish is a component of the natural ichthyofauna. The sera of these species contains lipoprotein groups specific for other animals; however, high-density lipoproteins prevail in fish.  相似文献

Acute temperature stress in animals results in increases in heat shock proteins (HSPs) and stress hormones. There is evidence that stress hormones influence the magnitude of the heat shock response; however, their role is equivocal. To determine whether and how stress hormones may affect the heat shock response, we capitalized on two lines of rainbow trout specifically bred for their high (HR) and low (LR) cortisol response to stress. We predicted that LR fish, with a low cortisol but high catecholamine response to stress, would induce higher levels of HSPs after acute heat stress than HR trout. We found that HR fish have significantly higher increases in both catecholamines and cortisol compared with LR fish, and LR fish had no appreciable stress hormone response to heat shock. This unexpected finding prevented further interpretation of the hormonal modulation of the heat shock response but provided insight into stress-coping styles and environmental stress. HR fish also had a significantly greater and faster heat shock response and less oxidative protein damage than LR fish. Despite these clear differences in the physiological and cellular responses to heat shock, there were no differences in the thermal tolerance of HR and LR fish. Our results support the hypothesis that responsiveness to environmental change underpins the physiological differences in stress-coping styles. Here, we demonstrate that the heat shock response is a distinguishing feature of the HR and LR lines and suggest that it may have been coselected with the hormonal responses to stress.  相似文献

Until now the supplementation of cryopreservation extenders with antioxidants has not been examined in teleost fish. Therefore, the present study investigated whether addition of antioxidants (catalase, superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, reduced glutathione, reduced methione, mixtures of reduced and oxidized glutathione or methionine) to the cryopreservation extenders could increase the quality of frozen-thawed semen of brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis, and rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. In brook trout and rainbow trout semen post-thaw fertility and motility were evaluated and in brook trout additionally the membrane integrity, DNA integrity, and sperm lipid peroxidation were evaluated. The tested antioxidants affected the motility parameters, DNA integrity, and fertility of cryopreserved semen, but not the membrane integrity. Most of the observed effects were negative and only minor positive effects were found. In brook trout 1.5 mmol/l reduced methionine and a mixture of 1.5 mmol/l oxidized and reduced glutathione increased the swimming velocity of frozen-thawed semen. One hundred U/l catalase, 1.5 mmol/l reduced glutathione, and 1.5 mmol/l reduced methionine slightly, but not statistically significantly increased the semen post-thaw fertility. However, these effects were not detectable in rainbow trout. Antioxidative stress or damage seems to play no role during cryopreservation, as also in the lipid peroxidation test no differences were obtained between fresh and cryopreserved semen. Therefore, for routine cryopreservation extender supplementation with antioxidants is not recommended in brook trout and rainbow trout.  相似文献

We used direct observation via snorkeling surveys to quantify microhabitat use by native brook (Salvelinus fontinalis) and non‐native brown (Salmo trutta) and rainbow (Onchorynchus mykiss) trout occupying natural and restored pool habitats within a large, high‐elevation Appalachian river, United States. Permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) and subsequent two‐way analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated a significant difference in microhabitat use by brook and non‐native trout within restored pools. We also detected a significant difference in microhabitat use by brook trout occupying pools in allopatry versus those occupying pools in sympatry with non‐native trout—a pattern that appears to be modulated by size. Smaller brook trout often occupied pools in the absence of non‐native species, where they used shallower and faster focal habitats. Larger brook trout occupied pools with, and utilized similar focal habitats (i.e. deeper, slower velocity) as, non‐native trout. Non‐native trout consistently occupied more thermally suitable microhabitats closer to cover as compared to brook trout, including the use of thermal refugia (i.e. ambient–focal temperature >2°C). These results suggest that non‐native trout influence brook trout use of restored habitats by: (1) displacing smaller brook trout from restored pools, and (2) displacing small and large brook trout from optimal microhabitats (cooler, deeper, and lower velocity). Consequently, benefits of habitat restoration in large rivers may only be fully realized by brook trout in the absence of non‐native species. Future research within this and other large river systems should characterize brook trout response to stream restoration following removal of non‐native species.  相似文献

We examined diet and diel energy intake of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, of different lengths captured by electrofishing between 1991 and 1997 in the Lee's Ferry tailwater, Colorado River, below Glen Canyon Dam, Arizona. Trout diets reflected a depauperate food base and indicated limited potential of different fish size-groups to partition food resources. As evidenced by relative stomach volumes of ingested matter, mid-sized and large trout tended to consume more algae than did small fish, suggesting that they consumed diets of lower nutritional quality. An energy intake model indicated that median consumers among mid-sized and large fish generally failed annually to surpass estimated maintenance energy requirements and that median consumers among mid-sized trout failed to meet or exceed maintenance requirements during all seasons. In contrast, median consumers among small trout met or surpassed maintenance energy requirements during most years and in summer. Results support a hypothesis that larger rainbow trout in lotic systems are food-limited more often than smaller fish.  相似文献
