Velvet beans, fast growing leguminous cover crops used in the humid tropics, are shallow rooted on acid soils. This might be due to an inherent branching pattern, to an intrinsic toxicity of the acid subsoil or to a relative preference for root development in the topsoil. Such preference could be based on soil chemical factors in the subsoil or on physical factors such as penetration resistance or aeration. In a field experiment with two species of velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens var. utilis and M. deeringiana) all topsoil was removed and plants were sown directly into the acid subsoil. Root development was neither affected by this treatment nor by P fertilization or liming. In the absence of topsoil good root development in the exposed upper layer of subsoil was possible, so the hypothesis of a toxicity per se of the subsoil could be rejected. To test whether poor root development in the subsoil in the presence of topsoil is due to an inherent branching pattern of the plant or to a relative preference for topsoil, a modified in-growth core technique was used. Local topsoil and subsoil and an acid soil with a higher exchangeable Al content were placed in mesh bags at different depths and at different bulk densities, with and without lime and/or P fertilizer. A comparison of root development in mesh bags placed in the topsoil or subsoil showed that position and thus inherent branching pattern is not important. Root development in the subsoil was poor when this soil was placed in a mesh bag in the topsoil, but in an acid soil of much higher exchangeable Al content and higher percentage Al saturation more roots developed. In a second experiment in mesh bags, bulk density of the repacked soil in the range 1.0–1.5 g cm-3 had no significant effect on root development. P fertilization and a high rate of liming of the soil placed in the mesh bag had a positive effect on root length density. It is concluded that poor root development in the acid subsoil under field conditions is due to a relative preference for topsoil. Al saturation and bulk density of the soil are not directly involved in this preference, but differences in availability of P and Mg or in Ca/Al ratios might play a role.  相似文献

InMucuna pruriens var.utilis, grown with nitrate-N in a hydroponic split-root system, an Al avoidance reaction of root growth was observed, which was ascribed to local P stress in the Al containing compartment. The Al avoidance reaction was similar to the avoidance ofMucuna roots of acid subsoil in the field where roots grew preferentially in the topsoil. In the present paper the effect of different N forms (NO3 and NH4 +) on the reactions ofMucuna to Al were studied, since in acid soils N is present as a mixture of NO3 and NH4 +. No interaction between the N form and Al toxicity was found. A hydroponic split-root experiment with NH4NO3 nutrition, which is comparable to the situation in the field, showed that under these conditions Al avoidance did not occur. It is concluded that a relation between the Al avoidance reaction ofMucuna and P stress is still likely.Abbreviations Dr root diameter - Lpr total root length per plant - Lrw specific root length - NRA nitrate reductase activity - S/R shoot: root ratio  相似文献

Two wheat varieties with differing aluminium tolerance were grown in pots of acid soil. Liming did not change significantly the amounts of chemically extractable P and K, but caused improved vegetative growth, increased inflow of P and K and reduced uptake of Al. Without lime, roots had a higher content and concentration of P than shoots; liming reversed this. Without lime the sensitive variety with a shorter root length had an Al inflow ten times that of the tolerant one: tolerance involves a mechanism for exlcuding Al. The inflow of P per unit inflow of Al (mol ratio) without lime was three times greater for the tolerant variety which therefore has more P to counteract the effects of Al. The same varieties were grown in two-layer soil columns, with a low P status and a limed topsoil and acid subsoil. Liming the subsoil improved plant growth but this was still restricted by low P availability. Addition of P to the topsoil caused good growth regardless of subsoil acidity: root growth increased in both layers and P (labelled with32P) taken up from the topsoil was translocated to roots in the subsoil. This P inactivated root Al and allowed the roots to grow and take up more P from the acid subsoil with however a reduction in inflow. The sensitive variety was affected more by the acid subsoil and low P availability, had a similar ability to translocate P to subsoil roots but could not attain the growth rate of the tolerant wheat even with P and lime.  相似文献

In a 4-year lysimeter experiment, we investigated the effects of topsoil heavy metal pollution (3,000 mg kg−1 Zn, 640 mg kg−1 Cu, 90 mg kg−1 Pb and 10 mg kg−1 Cd) and (synthetic) acid rain (pH 3.5) on tree growth and water use efficiency of young forest ecosystems consisting of Norway spruce (Picea abies), willow (Salix viminalis), poplar (Populus tremula) and birch (Betula pendula) trees and a variety of understorey plants. The treatments were applied in a Latin square factorial design (contaminated vs uncontaminated topsoil, acidified rain vs ambient rain) to 16 open-top chambers, with 4 replicates each. Each open-top chamber contained two lysimeters, one with a calcareous, and the other with acidic subsoil. The four tree species responded quite differently to heavy metal pollution and type of subsoil. The fine root mass, which was only sampled at the end of the experiment in 2003, was significantly reduced by heavy metal pollution in P. abies, P. tremula and B. pendula, but not in S. viminalis. The metal treatment responses of above-ground biomass and leaf area varied between years. In 2002, the heavy metal treatment reduced above-ground biomass and leaf area in P. tremula, but not in the other species. In 2003, metals did not reduce above-ground growth in P. tremula, but did so in the other species. It appears that the responses in above-ground biomass and leaf area, which paralleled each other, were related to changes in the relative competitive strength of the various species in the two experimental years. S. viminalis gained relative to P. tremula in absence of metal stress, in particular on calcareous subsoil, while P. abies showed the largest increases in growth rates in all treatments. Above- and below-ground growth was strongly inhibited by acidic subsoil in S. viminalis and to a lesser degree also in P. abies. In P. abies, this subsoil effect was enhanced by metal stress. Acid rain was not found to have any substantial effect. Whole-system water use efficiency was reduced by metal stress and higher on calcareous than on acidic subsoil.  相似文献

Fast growing, climbing leguminous cover crops such as the velvet beans can be used to reclaim weed-infested, degraded soils in the humid tropics, especially land covered by the grass Imperata cylindrica; they climb over the grass leaves and shade the grass out if their cover lasts long enough. Tolerance of two species of velvet bean to eroded soils was investigated by removing topsoil and directly sowing into the subsoil; plots where topsoil was not removed were used as a control. The response to small amounts of P fertilizer and lime was also tested. Removal of the topsoil resulted in retarded growth of both species, in increased dry matter content of the shoot, in decreased specific leaf area and in increased leaf weight ratio, due to shorter internodes. Six weeks after planting the leaf area index (LAI) was about 1.2 where topsoil was retained, sufficient for a shading effect on Imperata. Where topsoil had been removed, the LAI was only 0.6. Mucuna pruriens var. utilis showed a faster aboveground growth than M. deeringiana; the species did not differ in tolerance to eroded soil. Small amounts of P fertilizer had no significant effect on the growth of both Mucuna species. Shoot: root ratios, on a dry weight basis, were much lower when topsoil had been removed, about 3.7 and 2.4 for M. p. utilis and M. deeringiana respectively, compared to 6.2 and 3.3 where topsoil was retained. Removal of topsoil led to reduced Mg and to increased Al concentrations in roots, and to increased levels of Mn and Al in shoots. In the second year no effect of lime or residual effect of P application was found on growth of Mucuna or Imperata. Removal of the topsoil had little effect on the growth of weeds after the cover crop had been harvested. Due to the high Al tolerance of Imperata, reclamation by Mucuna will be less effective if the topsoil has been lost by erosion.  相似文献

The growth and mineral nutrition responses were evaluated of three tropical legumes, cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. cv Kuromame), pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan L. (Millsp.) cv ICPL 86009] and groundnut (Arachis hypogaea cv Nakateyutaka) inoculated with two different species of VAM fungi, Glomus sp. (Glomus etunicatum-like species) and Gigaspora margarita, and grown in Andosols with different fertilities [Bray II-P: topsoil (72 ppm), subsoil (<0.1 ppm)]. Percent fungal root colonization was high in cowpea and groundnut but relatively low in pigeonpea in both soil types. Despite the low rate of root infection, significant growth responses were produced, especially in the inoculated pigeonpea plant. In all legumes, shoot dry matter production was favoured by the inoculations. Increases in shoot biomass due to mycorrhizae were greater in the subsoil than in the topsoil. Mycorrhization raised shoot concentrations of P and Ca (in cowpea and groundnut) and P and K (in pigeonpea) in the topsoil. Whereas the P concentration in shoots in the subsoil was not positively affected by VAM fungi, particularly in cowpea and pigeonpea, the concentration of K in such plants was significantly increased by VAM treatment. The results also showed that mycorrhizal enhancement of shoot micronutrient concentrations was very rare in all plants, with negative effects observed in certain cases. Cu concentration, in particular, was not affected by VAM formation in any of the plants, and Mn and Fe in pigeonpea and groundnut, respectively, remained the same whether plants were mycorrhizal or not. In both soils the three legumes responded to Glomus sp. better than to Gigaspora margarita, and the effects of the VAM fungi on each of the crops relative to the controls were greater in the subsoil than in the topsoil. However, shoot growth of groundnut was not affected as much as cowpea and pigeonpea by the type of soil used. In spite of the relatively low infection of its root, pigeonpea was generally the most responsive of the three legume species in terms of mycorrhizal/nonmycorrhizal ratios.  相似文献

Potential importance of the subsoil for the P and Mg nutrition of wheat   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A method is described which allowed the quantification of the potential uptake of P and Mg from the subsoil (>30cm) by spring wheat. Wheat was grown on an artificial topsoil (sand with no plant available P or Mg) which was superimposed on loess subsoils in N. Germany. The supply of P and Mg in the topsoil was varied by application of different quantities of P and Mg fertilizer. Uptake of P and Mg from the subsoil was calculated as the difference between total plant uptake (determined by plant analysis) and the quantities of P and Mg removed from the topsoil (determined by soil analysis). P uptake from the subsoil increased from 37% to 85% of total P uptake, with decreasing P supply in the topsoil. Calculations of potential supply by diffusion showed that, with a CAL-extractable P2O5 content in the subsoil of 9 mg 100g-1, supply from the subsoil was only possible if the influence of root hairs was considered. The method also showed that the total demand for Mg by spring wheat could be satisfield from the supply of Mg from the subsoil of typical loess soils. Mg uptake from the subsoil decreased to 33% of total uptake with increasing Mg supply in the topsoil.  相似文献

Losses of soil base cations due to acid rain have been implicated in declines of red spruce and sugar maple in the northeastern USA. We studied fine root and aboveground biomass and production in five northern hardwood and three conifer stands differing in soil Ca status at Sleepers River, VT; Hubbard Brook, NH; and Cone Pond, NH. Neither aboveground biomass and production nor belowground biomass were related to soil Ca or Ca:Al ratios across this gradient. Hardwood stands had 37% higher aboveground biomass (P = 0.03) and 44% higher leaf litter production (P < 0.01) than the conifer stands, on average. Fine root biomass (<2 mm in diameter) in the upper 35 cm of the soil, including the forest floor, was very similar in hardwoods and conifers (5.92 and 5.93 Mg ha−1). The turnover coefficient (TC) of fine roots smaller than 1 mm ranged from 0.62 to 1.86 y−1 and increased significantly with soil exchangeable Ca (P = 0.03). As a result, calculated fine root production was clearly higher in sites with higher soil Ca (P = 0.02). Fine root production (biomass times turnover) ranged from 1.2 to 3.7 Mg ha−1 y−1 for hardwood stands and from 0.9 to 2.3 Mg ha−1 y−1 for conifer stands. The relationship we observed between soil Ca availability and root production suggests that cation depletion might lead to reduced carbon allocation to roots in these ecosystems.  相似文献

Background and aims

Macropores may be preferential root pathways into the subsoil. We hypothesised that the presence of macropores promotes P-uptake from subsoil, particularly at limited water supply in surface soil. We tested this hypothesis in a rhizotron experiment with spring wheat (Triticum aestivum cv. Scirocco) under variation of fertilisation and irrigation.

Methods

Rhizotrons were filled with compacted subsoil (bulk density 1.4 g cm?3), underneath a P-depleted topsoil. In half of these rhizotrons the subsoil contained artificial macropores. Spring wheat was grown for 41 days with and without irrigation and 31P–addition. Also, a 33P–tracer was added at the soil surface to trace P-distribution in plants using liquid scintillation counting and radioactive imaging.

Results

Fertilisation and irrigation promoted biomass production and plant P-uptake. Improved growing conditions resulted in a higher proportion of subsoil roots, indicating that the topsoil root system additionally promoted subsoil nutrient acquisition. The presence of macropores did not improve plant growth but tended to increase translocation of 33P into both above- and belowground biomass. 33P–imaging confirmed that this plant-internal transport of topsoil-P extended into subsoil roots.

Conclusions

The lack of penetration resistance in macropores did not increase plant growth and nutrient uptake from subsoil here; however, wheat specifically re-allocated topsoil-P for subsoil root growth.

Water regime of metal-contaminated soil under juvenile forest vegetation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In a three-year factorial lysimeter study in Open Top Chambers (OTCs), we investigated the effect of topsoil pollution by the heavy metals Zn, Cu, and Cd on the water regime of newly established forest ecosystems. Furthermore, we studied the influence of two types of uncontaminated subsoils (acidic vs. calcareous) and two types of irrigation water acidity (ambient rainfall chemistry vs. acidified chemistry) on the response of the vegetation. Each of the eight treatment combinations was replicated four times. The contamination (2700 mg kg–1 Zn, 385 mg kg–1 Cu and 10 mg kg–1 Cd) was applied by mixing filter dust from a non-ferrous metal smelter into the upper 15 cm of the soil profile, consisting of silty loam (pH 6.5). The same vegetation was established in all 32 lysimeters. The model forest ecosystem consisted of seedlings of Norway spruce (Picea abies), willow (Salix viminalis), poplar (Populus tremula) and birch (Betula pendula) trees and a variety of herbaceous understorey plants. Systematic and significant effects showed up in the second and third growing season after canopies had closed. Evapotranspiration was reduced in metal contaminated treatments, independent of the subsoil type and acidity of the irrigation water. This effect corresponded to an even stronger reduction in root growth in the metal treatments. In the first two growing seasons, evapotranspiration was higher on the calcareous than on the acidic subsoil. In the third year the difference disappeared. Acidification of the irrigation water had no significant effect on water consumption, although a tendency to enhance evapotranspiration became increasingly manifest in the second and third year. Soil water potentials indicated that the increasing water consumption over the years was fed primarily by intensified extraction of water from the topsoil in the lysimeters with acidic subsoil, whereas also lower depths became strongly exploited in the lysimeters with calcareous subsoil. These patterns agreed well with the vertical profiles of fine root density related with the two types of subsoil. Leaf transpiration measurements and biomass samples showed that different plant species in part responded quite differently and occasionally even in opposite ways to the metal treatments and subsoil conditions. They suggest that the year-to-year changes in treatment effects on water consumption and extraction patterns were related to differences in growth dynamics, as well as to shifts in competitiveness of the various species. Results showed that the uncontaminated subsoil offered a possibility to compensate the reduction in root water extraction in the topsoil under drought, as well as metal stress.  相似文献

Climate-induced changes in snow cover can greatly impact winter soil microclimate and spring water supply. These effects, in turn, can influence plant and microbial activity and the strength of leaching processes, potentially altering the distribution and storage of soil organic carbon (SOC) across different soil depths. However, few studies have examined how changes in snow cover will affect SOC stocks, and even less is known about the impact of snow cover on SOC dynamics along soil profiles. By selecting 11 snow fences along a 570 km climate gradient in Inner Mongolia, covering arid, temperate, and meadow steppes, we measured plant and microbial biomass, community composition, SOC content, and other soil parameters from topsoil to a depth of 60 cm. We found that deepened snow increased aboveground and belowground plant biomass, as well as microbial biomass. Plant and microbial carbon input were positively correlated with grassland SOC stocks. More importantly, we found that deepened snow altered SOC distribution along vertical soil profiles. The increase in SOC caused by deepened snow was much greater in the subsoil (+74.7%; 40–60 cm) than that in the topsoil (+19.0%; 0–5 cm). Additionally, the controls on SOC content under deepened snow differed between the topsoil and subsoil layers. The increase in microbial and root biomass jointly enhanced topsoil C accumulation, while the increase in leaching processes became critical in promoting subsoil C accumulation. We conclude that under deepened snow, the subsoil had a high capacity to sink C by incorporating C leached from the topsoil, suggesting that the subsoil, originally thought to be climate insensitive, could have a higher response to precipitation changes due to vertical C transport. Our study highlights the importance of considering soil depth when assessing the impacts of snow cover changes on SOC dynamics.  相似文献

Water extraction from subsoil in upland rice (Oryza sativa L.) was examined as related to topsoil desiccation and subsoil compaction. The water extraction was observed by measurements of heavy water concentrations in transpiring plants. The plants were grown in pots that were filled with sandy soil and vertically compartmented into two columns. Heavy water was applied to the subsoil. Plants exposed to mild topsoil desiccation (–120 kPa in water potential) eventually increased water extraction from the subsoil and maintained photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance at the wet condition level. The rates of the plants subjected to severely droughted topsoil (–190 kPa) were significantly lowered due to less water uptake from the subsoil. Subsoil compaction at bulk densities of 1.45 and 1.50 Mg m–3 inhibited increase of root length densities. Limited water extraction from the subsoil was insufficient to maintain plant productivity under drought conditions. Daily water uptake per unit of root length in the lower tube did not apparently increase even if water demand on the unit root length increased. When water to topsoil was completely withheld, water extraction from the subsoil gradually increased as the topsoil dried out. Plants that were watered and rewatered took up very little water from the subsoil. The extraction from the subsoil occurred only when water potential of the topsoil was below about –190 kPa.  相似文献

A K/Rb isotope dilution method was used to determine the uptake of K from undisturbed subsoils. Rb was applied to the topsoil (0–30 cm) to trace the K taken up from the topsoil by crops. The K/Rb ratio in the crops increases when roots contact the Rb-free subsoil. This change in the K/Rb ratio enables the calculation of the uptake of K from the subsoil. Results of 34 field experiments on loess-parabrown soils in N. Germany showed that the subsoil (>30 cm) supplied, on average, 34% of the total K uptake by spring wheat (range 9–70%). The range between the experimental sites is considered in relation to the contents of K in the top and subsoils (as extracted by 0.025 N CaCl2 solution), the proportion of the total root length in the subsoils, and competition for K between roots in the top and subsoil. In subsoils with similar K contents, uptake from the subsoil decreased significantly from 65 to 21% of total K uptake, as K contents in the topsoils increased from 4 to 8 mg K/100 g. On sites with the same K contents in topsoils (9 mg K/100 g), the subsoil supplied 12 to 61% of total K uptake as the K contents of the subsoil increased from 2 to 27 mg K/100 g. The contribution of uptake of K from the subsoil increased with the development of the crop, from 8% at first node stage to 35% at ear emergence, as the proportion of total root length in the subsoil increased. High root length densities in the topsoil (9 cm/cm3) resulted in competition for K between roots and increased uptake of K from the subsoil.

Subsoil root activity in tree-based cropping systems   总被引:6,自引:2,他引:4
An increasing number of studies indicate that (i) nutrient and water resources can be abundant in the subsoil and (ii) trees have deep root systems that can possibly reach these resources. It is less clear whether subsoil resources are actually improving water and nutrient status of tree-based cropping systems and whether they are significantly increasing crop production and yield. To answer such a question, the distribution of nutrient and water uptake by trees needs to be quantified. So-called `root activity distributions' give valuable information about actual subsoil use by trees whereas studies on root length or mass distributions do not often correlate with uptake distributions. Despite the usually lower relative root activity in the subsoil compared to the topsoil per unit soil, the large volume of subsoil in comparison to mostly shallow topsoil is an important resource for crop nutrient and water uptake. The present study compares published root activity distributions using the model Activity=A max(1–k depth). The obtained regression constants k of 0.91–0.99 determined in this publication reflect the values computed by an earlier published survey for root biomass ranging from tundra to those of temperate forest biomes. Thus, tree crops can have shallow root activity and 75% of their total root activity in the first 0.1 m of soil, or very deep root activity with more than 90% below 0.1 m. Neither environmental factors (i.e., climate and soil properties available from these publications) nor plant species explain differences of root activity distributions with depth. The deepest root activity is found for fruit trees such as citrus, guava and mango. Shaded crops such as coffee and cacao tend to have shallower root activity than fruit trees. Monocots including oil palm, coconut or banana have root activity that can be both deep and shallow. Regional and temporal variations of subsoil root activity for the same tree species are significant and generally larger than differences between species. Root activity patterns of tree crops appear to be sufficiently flexible to allow for subsoil resource use. Consequently, management such as pruning, fertilization, liming and irrigation are shown to significantly affect subsoil root activity.  相似文献

Mechanisms leading to high mean residence times of organic matter in subsoil horizons are poorly understood. In lower parts of the soil profile root material contributes greatly to soil organic matter (SOM). The objective of this study was to elucidate the decomposition dynamics of root-derived C and N in different soil depths during a 3 year field experiment and to examine the importance of different protection mechanisms as well as abiotic factors for the decomposition dynamics. Additionally, we assessed the effect of root litter addition on native SOM. Our conceptual approach included the exposure of litterbags with 13C and 15N labeled wheat root material mixed to loamy agricultural soil at three different soil depths (30, 60 and 90 cm). During the incubation period, we monitored soil temperature, humidity and the incorporation of root derived C and N into the soil microbial biomass and physical SOM fractions. Our results showed that abiotic decay conditions were better in subsurface horizons compared to the topsoil. Root litter addition significantly increased the size of microbial biomass in all three soil horizons. In the topsoil, root-derived C decomposition was significantly higher in the first 6 months of incubation compared to subsoil horizons. In 60 and 90 cm depths, a lag phase with development of soil microbial biomass seemed to be prevailing before decomposition was activated. For root-derived N, similar decomposition kinetics could be observed in top- and subsoil horizons. Despite of higher SOM contents, better soil structure and higher microbial activity in the topsoil horizon compared to subsoil horizons, the amounts of root-derived C and N remaining after 3 years were similar for all three depths. Most of the root-derived C and N was present as organo-mineral complexes or occluded in soil aggregates (oPOM), illustrating similar importance of these two protection mechanisms in all three soil depths. Addition of fresh root litter caused small losses of native soil C whereas native N was retained. We conclude that despite of similar SOM protection mechanisms, there are distinct differences in decomposition dynamics of root litter between top- and subsoil horizons. In the long run, the better abiotic decay conditions prevailing in subsoil horizons may compensate for their poorer physico-chemical characteristics.  相似文献

Many plants are adapted to an eroded landscape with a large proportion of virgin soil. Open and disturbed soils are today almost only restricted to agricultural fields with high loads of fertilizers. We conducted a pot experiment in order to investigate growth and nutritional constraints of one calcicole species, Anisantha (syn. Bromus) tectorum, and one calcifuge species, Rumex acetosella, in decalcified topsoil and recently exposed calcareous subsoil from a field experiment in sandy grassland. In the pot experiment we implemented one treatment where we limed topsoil with CaCO3 to the same amount as in subsoil. The subsoil had approximately 10% CaCO3 and both species grew less in this soil compared to the topsoil, which had less than 1% CaCO3. Germination rate of A. tectorum was higher in subsoil than in topsoil or limed topsoil. P fertilization of the limed topsoil counteracted the negative liming effect for A. tectorum, but only partly so for R. acetosella. P fertilization of subsoil increased the shoot biomass of A. tectorum, but not of R. acetosella. P concentration in plants was not reduced when growing on subsoil or limed topsoil compared to topsoil. The results show that lime addition may reduce the P availability also to calcicole species such as A. tectorum and we found indications for that Ca toxicity may be a causing factor for the calcifuge behavior of R. acetosella. The significance of the results for conservation management practices in sandy grasslands is discussed.  相似文献

The ability of Lupinus albus L. to adapt to a heterogeneous soil profile containing acid subsoil below limed topsoil of the same type, and to utilize nutrients by significantly altering its root system structure, was investigated using specially constructed soil profile tubes. Plants grown in homogeneous acid profiles had the fastest growth while those grown in homogeneous limed-soil profiles showed the slowest growth and exhibited some chlorosis after 19 days. Limed topsoil combined with an acid subsoil profile initially retarded plant growth similar to that in a homogeneous limed soil. However, after 68 days significantly greater growth had occurred in the limed/acid soil treatment relative to the homogeneous limed soil, indicating plants had benefited from the acid subsoil stratum. Plants in the homogeneous limed soil profile had lower concentrations of P, Fe and Mn in shoots compared with those in heterogeneous soils. In contrast, the concentration of Ca increased by 74%, due mainly to an increase in the water-soluble Ca fraction. When grown in a heterogeneous limed/acid soil profile, concentrations of P, Ca, K, Mg, Fe, Mn and Zn in shoots were comparable to those grown in a soil with a homogeneous acid profile. Although total root production was lower in the homogeneous limed-soil profile compared to the acid-soil containing profiles, cluster root mass was maintained at a level comparable with that in acid soil. The roots in heterogeneous soil profiles exhibited extensive plasticity, demonstrating a root-type specific, morphological response to the soil conditions. Within the acid subsoil of a heterogeneous profile, there was a large increase in cluster root mass compared with non-cluster roots. The proliferation of cluster roots in acid soil below limed topsoil may enhance the plant's ability to exploit this soil and facilitate the cultivation of L. albus on limed soil. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
