Assimilation of NO3 and NH4+ by perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) turf, previously deprived of N for 7 days, was examined. Nitrogen uptake rate was increased up to four- to five-fold for both forms of N by N-deprivation as compared to N-sufficient controls, with the deficiency-enhanced N absorption persisting through a 48 hour uptake period. Nitrate, but not NH4+, accumulated in the roots and to a lesser degree in shoots. By 48 hours, 53% of the absorbed NO3 had been reduced, whereas 97% of the NH4+ had been assimilated. During the early stages (0 to 8 hours) of NO3 uptake by N-deficient turf, reduction occurred primarily in the roots. Between 8 and 16 hours, however, the site of reduction shifted to the shoots. Nitrogen form did not affect partitioning of the absorbed N between roots (40%) and shoots (60%) but did affect growth. Compared to NO3, NH4+ uptake inhibited root, but not shoot, growth. Total soluble carbohydrates decreased in both roots and shoots during the uptake period, principally the result of fructan metabolism. Ammonium uptake resulted in greater total depletion of soluble carbohydrates in the root compared to NO3 uptake. The data indicate that N assimilation by ryegrass turf utilizes stored sugars but is also dependent on current photosynthate.

The carbon and nitrogen partitioning characteristics of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and maize (Zea mays L.) grown hydroponically at a constant pH on either 4 mM or 12 mM NO3 - or NH4 + nutrition were investigated using either 14C or 15N techniques. Greater allocation of 14C to amino-N fractions occurred at the expense of allocation of 14C to carbohydrate fractions in NH4 +-compared to NO3 --fed plants. The [14C]carbohydrate:[14C]amino-N ratios were 1.5-fold and 2.0-fold greater in shoots and roots respectively of 12 mM NO3 --compared to 12 mM NH4 +-fed wheat. In both 4 mM and 12 mM N-fed maize the [14C]carbohydrate:[14C]amino-N ratios were approximately 1.7-fold and 2.0-fold greater in shoots and roots respectively of NO3 --compared to NH4 +-fed plants. Similar results were observed in roots of wheat and maize grown in split-root culture with one root-half in NO3 --and the other in NH4 +-containing nutrient media. Thus the allocation of carbon to the amino-N fractions occurred at the expense of carbohydrate fractions, particularly within the root. Allocation of 14N and 15N within separate sets of plants confirmed that NH4 --fed plants accumulated more amino-N compounds than NO3 --fed plants. Wheat roots supplied with 15NH4 + for 8 h were found to accumulate 15NH4 + (8.5 g 15N g-1 h-1) whereas in maize roots very little 15NH4 + accumulated (1.5 g 15N g-1 h-1)It is proposed that the observed accumulation of 15NH4 + in wheat roots in these experiments is the result of limited availability of carbon within the roots of the wheat plants for the detoxification of NH4 +, in contrast to the situation in maize. Higher photosynthetic capacity and lower shoot: root ratios of the C4 maize plants ensure greater carbon availability to the root than in the C3 wheat plants. These differences in carbon and nitrogen partitioning between NO3 --and NH4 +-fed wheat and maize could be responsible for different responses of wheat and maize root growth to NO3 - and NH4 + nutrition.

Several studies have previously shown that shoot removal of forage species, either by cutting or herbivore grazing, results in a large decline in N uptake (60%) and/or N2 fixation (80%). The source of N used for initial shoot growth following defoliation relies mainly on mobilisation of N reserves from tissues remaining after defoliation. To date, most studies investigating N-mobilisation have been conducted, with isolated plants grown in controlled conditions. The objectives of this study were for Lolium perenne L., grown in a dense canopy in field conditions, to determine: 1) the contribution of N-mobilisation, NH4 + uptake and NO3 - uptake to growing shoots after defoliation, and 2) the contribution of the high (HATS) and low (LATS) affinity transport systems to the total plant uptake of NH4 + and NO3 -. During the first seven days following defoliation, decreases in biomass and N-content of roots (34% and 47%, respectively) and to a lesser extent stubble (18% and 43%, respectively) were observed, concomitant with mobilisation of N to shoots. The proportion and origin of N used by shoots (derived from reserves or uptake) was similar to data reported for isolated plants. Both HATS and LATS contributed to the total root uptake of NH4 + and NO3 -. The Vmax of both the NH4 + and NO3 - HATS increased as a function of time after defoliation, and both HATS systems were saturated by substrate concentrations in the soil at all times. The capacity of the LATS was reduced as soil NO3 - and NH4 + concentrations decreased following defoliation. Data from 15N uptake by field-grown plants, and uptake rates of NH4 + and NO3 - estimated by excised root bioassays, were significantly correlated, though uptake was over-estimated by the later method. The results are discussed in terms of putative mechanisms for regulating N uptake following severe defoliation. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

We investigated whether six arctic plant species have the potential to induce nitrate reductase (NR) activity when exposed to NO3 --nitrogen under controlled environment conditions, using an in vivo assay that uses the rate of NO2 --accumulation to estimate potential NR activity. We also assessed the effect of low root temperatures on NR activity, growth and nitrogen uptake (using 15N applications) in two of the selected species. Five of the six species (Cerastium alpinum, Dryas intergrifolia, Oxyria digyna, Saxifraga cernua and Salix arctica) were capable of inducing NR activity when exposed to solutions containing 0.5 mM NO3 - at 20°C for 10 days. Although in vivo NR activity was not induced in Saxifraga oppositifolia under controlled conditions, we conclude that it was capable of growing successfully on NO3 -, due to the presence of moderate rates of NR activity observed in both NH4 +-grown and NO3 --treated plants. Exposure of O. digyna and D. integrifolia to 3°C root temperatures for two weeks, with the shoots kept at 20°C, resulted in root and leaf NR activity rates of NO3 --treated plants being reduced to rates exhibited by NH4 +-grown plants. Although these decreases in NR in both species appeared to be due to limitations in NO3 --uptake and growth rate (rather than direct low-temperature inhibition of NR synthesis per se), direct low-temperature inhibition of root NR synthesis could not be ruled out. In contrast to the temperature insensitivity of NH4 + uptake in D. integrifolia, NO3 --uptake in D. integrifolia was inhibited by low root temperatures. We conclude that the selected arctic species have the genetic potential to utilize NO3 --nitrogen, and that low root temperatures, in conjunction with other environmental limitations, may be responsible for the lack of induction of NR in D. integrifolia and Salix arctica under field conditions.

In order to investigate the effect of N form on dry matter (DM) formation and water uptake rate, French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. `Sotaxa') plants were grown with a split-root system. Three treatments were compared: sole nitrate (NO 3) supply (NN), sole ammonium (NH+ 4) supply (AA) and spatially separated supply of NO 3 and NH+ 4 (NA). The pH of the nutrient solutions was kept constant at 6.3 using a pH-stat system. 9 days after onset of the treatments, NN plants had higher root (36%) and shoot dry matter (11%) than AA plants. N form drastically influenced partitioning of assimilates: in the NA treatment, the root half exposed to NO 3 revealed a 170% higher DM than the root half exposed to NH+ 4. N form affected stable carbon-isotope discrimination () of leaf tissue. In leaves of plants which were supplied with NH+ 4 (AA; NA) was significantly more negative (–29.4, –29.6) than in NN treatment (–28.2). We explain this effect by differences in stomatal conductance. We suppose that the significantly less negative of root tissue under NH+ 4 supply is most probably related to higher PEP-case activity. The water uptake rate was higher in NN than in AA grown plants. This effect was found in both, short- and long-term experiments. In case of NA plants, the water uptake in the root part being exposed to NO 3 was 104% higher than in those receiving NH+ 4. At least in the case of the NA treatment we can exclude shoot growth effects as being responsible for differences in water uptake. We therefore assume that differences in root hydraulic conductivity are responsible for the observed effects.

Three-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) trees were grown on a sandy forest soil in pots, with the objective to determine their NH4/NO3 uptake ratio and proton efflux. N was supplied in three NH4-N/NO3-N ratios, 3:1, 1:1 and 1:3, either as 15NH4+14NO3 or as 14NH4+15NO3. Total N and 15N acquisition of different plant parts were measured. Averaged over the whole tree, the NH4/NO3 uptake ratios throughout the growing season were found to be 4.2, 2.5, and 1.5 for the three application ratios, respectively. The excess cation-over-anion uptake value (Ca-Aa) appeared to be linearly related to the natural logarithm of the NH4/NO3 uptake ratio. Further, this uptake ratio was related to the NH4/NO3 ratio of the soil solution. From these relationship it was estimated that Scots pine exhibits an acidifying uptake pattern as long as the contribution of nitrate to the N nutrition is lower than 70%. Under field circumstances root uptake may cause soil acidification in the topsoil, containing the largest part of the root system, and soil alkalization in deeper soil layers.

Growth, chemical composition, and nitrate reductase activity (NRA) of hydroponically cultured Rumex crispus, R. palustris, R. acetosa, and R. maritimus were studied in relation to form (NH4 +, NO3 -, or both) and level of N supply (4 mM N, and zero-N following a period of 4mM N). A distinct preference for either NH4 + or NO3 - could not be established. All species were characterized by a very efficient uptake and utilization of N, irrespective of N source, as evident from high concentrations of organic N in the tissues and concurrent excessive accumulations of free NO3 - and free NH4 +. Especially the accumulation of free NH4 + was unusually large. Generally, relative growth rate (RGR) was highest with a combination of NH4 + and NO3 -. Compared to mixed N supply, RGR of NO3 -- and NH4 +-grown plants declined on average 3% and 9%, respectively. Lowest RGR with NH4 + supply probably resulted from direct or indirect toxicity effects associated with high NH4 + and/or low Ca2+ contents of tissues. NRA in NO3 - and NH4NO3 plants was very similar with maxima in the leaves of ca 40 μmol NO2 - g-1 DW h-1. ‘Basal’ NRA levels in shoot tissues of NH4 + plants appeared relatively high with maxima in the leaves of ca 20 μmol NO2 - g-1 DW h-1. Carboxylate to organic N ratios, (C-A)/Norg, on a whole plant basis varied from 0.2 in NH4 + plants to 0.9 in NO3 - plants. After withdrawal of N, all accumulated NO3 - and NH4 + was assimilated into organic N and the organic N redistributed on a large scale. NRA rapidly declined to similar low levels, irrespective of previous N source. Shoot/root ratios of -N plants were 50–80% lower than those from +N plants. In comparison with +N, RGR of -N plants did not decline to a large extent, decreasing by only 15% in -NH4 + plants due to very high initial organic-N contents. N-deprived plants all exhibited an excess cation over anion uptake (net proton efflux), and whole-plant (C-A)/Norg ratios increased to values around unity. Possible difficulties in interpreting the (C-A)/Norg ratio and NRA of plants in their natural habitats are briefly discussed.

Lolium perenne L. cv. 23 (perennial ryegrass) plants were grown in flowing solution culture and acclimatized over 49 d to low root temperature (5°C) prior to treatment at root temperatures of 3, 5, 7 and 9°C for 41 d with common air temperature of 20/15°C day/night and solution pH 5·0. The effects of root temperature on growth, uptake and assimilation of N were compared with N supplied as either NH4 or NO3 at 10 mmol m?3. At any given temperature, the relative growth rate (RGR) of roots exceeded that of shoots, thus the root fraction (Rf) increased with time. These effects were found in plants grown with the two N sources. Plants grown at 3 and 5°C had very high dry matter contents as reflected by the fresh weight: freeze-dried weight ratio. This ratio increased sharply, especially in roots at 7 and 9°C. Expressed on a fresh weight basis, there was no major effect of root temperature on the [N] of plants receiving NHJ but at any given temperature, the [N] in plants grown with NHJ was significantly greater than in those grown with NO3. The specific absorption rate (SAR) of NH+4 was greater at all temperatures than SAR-NO3. In plants grown with NH+, 3–5% of the total N was recovered as NH+4, whereas in those grown with NO?3 the unassimilated NO?3 rose sharply between 7 and 9°C to become 14 and 28% of the total N in shoots and roots, respectively. The greater assimilation of NH+4 lead to concentrations of insoluble reduced N (= protein) which were 125 and 20% greater, in roots and shoots, respectively, than in NO?3-grown plants. Plants grown with NH+4 had very much greater glutamine and asparagine concentrations in both roots and shoots, although other amino acids were more similar in Concentration to those in NO?3 grown plants. It is concluded that slow growth at low root temperature is not caused by restriction of the absorption or assimilation of either NH+4 or NO?3. The additional residual N (protein) in NH+4 grown plants may serve as a labile store of N which could support growth when external N supply becomes deficient.

To test the hypothesis that rhizosphere acidification would enhance the hydrolyzation of organic phosphates by increasing phosphatase activity. A Petri dish experiment with sterile agar and a pot experiment with a low P soil were used. In the Petri dish experiment, roots of each plant were cultured in two compartments, each of which contained agar with one of three nitrogen combinations: NH 4 + /N0 (N0 = nitrogen free), NH 4 + /NO 3 - , and NO 3 - /N0. Phytin was supplied as the sole phosphorus (P) source to all compartments. In the pot experiment, the soil in each pot was treated with N0, KNO3, or (NH4)2SO4) together with 0 or 75 mg kg?1 phytin-P. Dry weight, P concentration, and P content of roots were highest in the NH 4 + compartments in the Petri dish experiment. In the pot experiment, dry weight, P concentration, and P content of both shoots and roots were higher with NH 4 + than with NO 3 - . NH 4 + treatments reduced rhizosphere pH, promoted the hydrolization of phytin, enhanced acid phosphatase activity in the rhizosphere, and increased phytin-P utilization relative to N0 and NO 3 - treatments. Phosphatase activity was negatively correlated with rhizosphere pH but was positively correlated with plant P content in both experiments. Rhizosphere acidification optimized the activity of acid phosphatase excreted by maize roots and promoted phytin mineralization. NH 4 + -induced acidification in the maize rhizosphere improved the growth of maize roots by improving P uptake from phytin; the improved growth, in turn, increased NH 4 + uptake and acidification.

Young saplings of Pinus sylvestris L. were exposed to gaseous NH3 at 53 or 105 g m–3 for one year in open-top chambers. Saplings received 15N-labelled (NH4)2SO4 via the soil. To examine the importance of foliar N uptake, changes in the concentration of total and labelled N in the needles were followed. Increase in needle biomass and N concentration were found in trees exposed to NH3, confirming that atmospheric NH3 acted as a N fertilizer. NH3 had a greater and quicker effect than (NH4)2SO4: compared with the growth in ambient air, the N concentration in the needles exposed to NH3 had increased by 49% in four months, while the increase after highest N-fertilization (200 kg N ha–1 y–1) was only 8%. The small contribution of NH4 + fertilization to the total N concentration was not due to a deficient N uptake: the 15N concentration in the needles increased significantly with time. On the other hand, NH3 uptake in shoots may have a negative effect on the NH4 + root uptake. The relation between plant N and atmospheric NH3 concentration was non-linear and possible reasons for this observation are discussed. Fumigation with NH3 significantly decreased the ratios of K/N and P/N, showing that fumigation disrupted the nutrient balance.

We investigated the effects on ginseng adventitious root growth and ginsenoside production when macro-element concentrations and nitrogen source were manipulated in the culture media. Biomass growth was greatest in the medium supplemented with 0.5-strength NH4PO3, whereas ginsenoside accumulation was highest (9.90 mg g-1 DW) in the absence of NH4PO3. At levels of 1.0-strength KNO3, root growth was maximum, but a 2.0 strength of KNO3 led to the greatest ginsenoside content (9.85 mg g-l). High concentrations of MgSO4 were most favorable for both root growth and ginsenoside accumulation (up to 8.89 mg g-1 DW). Root growth and ginsenoside content also increased in proportion to the concentration of CaCI2 in the medium, with the greatest accumulation of ginsenoside (8.91 mg g-1 DW) occurring at a 2.0 strength. The NH4/NO3 -- ratio also influenced adventitious root growth and ginsenoside production; both parameters were greater when the NO3 - concentration was higher than that of NH4 +. Maximum root growth was achieved at an NH4 +/NO3 - ratio of 7.19/18.50, while ginsenoside production was greatest (83.37 mg L-1) when NO3 - was used as the sole N source.

NH4 +-N can have inhibitory effects on plant growth. However, the mechanisms of these inhibitory effects are still poorly understood. In this study, effects of different N forms and a combination of ammonium + 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BA, a synthetic cytokinin) on growth, transpiration, uptake and flow of water and potassium in 88-days-old tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. K 326) plants were studied over a period of 12 days. Plants were supplied with equal amounts of N in different forms: NO3 , NH4NO3, NH4 + or NH4 ++6-BA (foliar spraying every 2 days after onset of the treatments). For determining flows and partitioning upper, middle and lower strata of three leaves each were analysed. During the 12 days study period, 50% replacement of NO3 -N by NH4 +-N (NH4NO3) did not change growth, transpiration, uptake and flow of water and K+ compared with the NO3 -N treatment. However, NH4 +-N as the sole N-source caused: (i) a substantial decrease in dry weight gain to 42% and 46% of the NO3 -N and NH4NO3 treatments, respectively; (ii) a marked reduction in transpiration rate, due to reduced stomatal conductance, illustrated by more negative leaf carbon-isotope discrimination (13C) compared with the NO3 treatment, especially in upper leaves; (iii) a strong reduction both in total water uptake, and in the rate of water uptake by roots, likely due to a decrease in root hydraulic conductivity; (iv) a marked reduction of K+ uptake to 10%. Under NH4 + nutrition the middle leaves accumulated 143%, and together with upper leaves 206% and the stem 227% of the K+ currently taken up, indicating massive mobilisation of K+ from lower leaves and even the roots. Phloem retranslocation of K+ from the shoot and cycling through the root contributed 67% to the xylem transport of K+, and this was 2.2 times more than concurrent uptake. Foliar 6-BA application could not suppress or reverse the inhibitory effects on growth, transpiration, uptake and flow of water and ions (K+) caused by NH4 +-N treatment, although positive effects by 6-BA application were observed, even when 6-BA (10–8 M) was supplied in nutrient solution daily with watering. Possible roles of cytokinin to regulate growth and development of NH4 +-fed plants are discussed.

A study was conducted to elucidate the effect of N form, either NH4 + or NO3 , on growth and solute composition of the salt-tolerant kallar grass [Leptochloa fusca (L.) Kunth] grown under 10 mM or 100 mM NaCl in hydroponics. Shoot biomass was not affected by N form, whereas NH4 + compared to NO3 nutrition caused an almost 4-fold reduction in the root biomass at both salinity levels. Under NH4 + nutrition, salinity had no effect on the biomass yield, whereas under NO3 nutrition, increasing salinity from 10 mM to 100 mM caused 23% and 36% reduction in the root and shoot biomass, respectively. The reduced root growth under NH4 + nutrition was not attributable to impaired shoot to root C allocation since N form did not affect the overall root sugar concentration and the starch concentration was even higher under NH4 + compared to NO3 nutrition. The low NH4 + (2 mM) and generally higher amino-N concentrations in NH4 +- compared to NO3 -fed plants indicated that the grass was able to effectively detoxify NH4 +. Salinity had no effect on Ca2+ and Mg2+ levels, whereas their concentration in shoots was lower under NH4 + compared to NO3 nutrition (over 66% reduction in Ca2+; over 20% reduction in Mg2+), but without showing deficiency symptoms. Ammonium compared to NO3 nutrition did not inhibit K+ uptake, and the K+-Na+ selectivity either remained unaffected or it was higher under NH4 + than under NO3 nutrition. Results suggested that while NH4 + versus NO3 nutrition substantially reduced root growth, and also strongly modified anion concentrations and to a minor extent concentrations of divalent cations in shoots, it did not influence salt tolerance of kallar grass.

The effect of incorporating cattle slurry in soil, either by mixing or by simulated injection into a hollow in soil, on the ryegrass uptake of total N and 15NH4 +-N was determined in three soils of different texture. The N accumulation in Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) from slurry N and from an equivalent amount of NH4 +-N in (15NH4) SO4 (control) was measured during 6 months of growth in pots. After this period the total recovery of labelled N in the top soil plus herbage was similar in the slurry and the control treatments. This indicated that gaseous losses from slurry NH4 +-N were insignificant. Consequently, the availability of slurry N to plants was mainly influenced by the mineralization-immobilization processes. The apparent utilization of slurry NH4 +-N mixed into soil was 7%, 14% and 24% lower than the utilization of (NH4)2SO4-N in a sand soil, a sandy loam soil and a loam soil, respectively. Thus, the net immobilization of N due to slurry application increased with increasing soil clay content, whereas the recovery in plants of 15N-labelled NH4 +-N from slurry was similar on the three soils. A parallel incubation experiment showed that the immobilization of slurry N occurred within the first week after slurry application. The incorporation of slurry N by simulated injection increased the plant uptake of both total and labelled N compared to mixing the slurry into the soil. The apparent utilization of injected slurry NH4 +-N was 7% higher, 8% lower and 4% higher than the utilization of (NH4)2SO4-N in the sand, the sandy loam and the loam soil, respectively. It is concluded that the spatial distribution of slurry in soil influenced the net mineralization of N to the same degree as did the soil type.

The effects of nitrogen form and phosphorus source on the growth, nutrient uptake and rhizosphere soil property of tea (Camellia sinensis L.) were investigated in a pot experiment. The experiment was performed with a compartmental cropping device, which enables the collection of rhizosphere soil at defined distances from the root of tea plant. Nitrogen was supplied as nitrate or ammonium in combination with soluble phosphorus as Ca(H2PO4)2 or insoluble P as rock phosphate. The leaf dry matter production of tea was significantly greater in the treatments with NH4 + than NO3 -, whereas dry matter production of root and stem was not significantly affected. Addition of phosphorus as either source did not influence the dry matter production. The concentrations of K in root, Mg and Ca in both the shoot and root supplied with NO3 - were significantly higher than in NH4 + and influence of P sources was minor. On the contrary, Al and Mn concentrations were significantly larger in NH4 --fed plants which could be attributed to remarkably increased availability of Al and Mn caused by acidification of the rhizosphere soil (the first 1-mm soil section from the root surface) with NH4–N nutrition. The concentration of N in shoot was also significantly higher in NH4- than in NO3-fed plants, indicating higher use efficiency of NH4–N. Whatever the phosphate source, rhizosphere pH declined in ammonium compared to in nitrate treatment. The pH decrease was much larger when no P or soluble P were applied and reached 0.85–1.30 units which extended to 3–5 mm away from the root surface. Exchangeable acidity, content of exchangeable Al and Mn were also considerably higher in the rhizosphere soils of NH4 + fed tea plants. Significant amounts of P dissolved from rock phosphate accumulated in rhizosphere of NH4 +, not NO3 -, suggesting that the dissolution of rock phosphate was induced by the proton excreted by tea root fed with ammonium. With soluble P addition, shoot and root P concentrations were greater in NH4 + than in NO3 - treatment and it appeared that this difference could not be sufficiently explained by the available P content in soil which was only slightly higher in NH4 + treatment. With rock phosphate addition, the shoot and root P concentrations were hardly affected by nitrogen form, although the available P content was much higher and accumulated in the rhizosphere soil supplied with ammonium. The reason for this was discussed with regard to the inter-relationship of Al with P uptake. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Field experiments were carried out in 1987 on winter wheat crops grown on three types of soil. 15N-labelled urea, 15NH4NO3 or NH4 15NO3 (80 kg N ha-1) was applied at tillering. The soils (chalky soil, hydromorphic loamy soil, sandy clay soil) were chosen to obtain a range of nitrogen dynamics, particularly nitrification. Soil microbial N immobilization and crop N uptake were measured at five dates. Shortly after fertilizer application (0–26 days), the amount of N immobilized in soil were markedly higher with labelled urea or ammonium than that with nitrate in all soils. During the same period, crop 15N uptake occurred preferentially at the expense of nitrate. Nitrification differed little between soils, the rates were 2.0 to 4.7 kg N ha-1 day-1 at 9°C daily mean temperature. The differences in immobilization and uptake had almost disappeared at flowering and harvest. 15N recovery in soil and crop varied between 50 and 100%. Gaseous losses probably occurred by volatilization in the chalky soil and denitrification in the hydromorphic loamy soil. These losses affected the NH4 + and NO3 - pools differently and determined the partitioning of fertilizer-N between immobilization and absorption.

In short-term water culture experiments with different 15N labeled ammonium or nitrate concentrations, citrus seedlings absorbed NH4 + at a higher rate than NO3 . Maximum NO3 uptake by the whole plant occurred at 120 mg L–1 NO3 -N, whereas NH4 + absorption was saturated at 240 mg L–1 NH4 +-N. 15NH4 + accumulated in roots and to a lesser degree in both leaves and stems. However, 15NO3 was mostly partitioned between leaves and roots.Adding increasing amounts of unlabeled NH4 + (15–60 mg L–1 N) to nutrient solutions containing 120 mg L–1 N as 15N labeled nitrate reduced 15NO3 uptake. Maximum inhibition of 15NO3 uptake was about 55% at 2.14 mM NH4 + (30 mg L–1 NH4 +-N) and it did not increase any further at higher NH4 + proportions. In a long-term experiment, the effects of concentration and source of added N (NO3 or NH4 +) on nutrient concentrations in leaves from plants grown in sand were evaluated. Leaf concentration of N, P, Mg, Fe and Cu were increased by NH4 + versus NO3 nutrition, whereas the reverse was true for Ca, K, Zn and Mn.The effects of different NO3 -N:NH4 +-N ratios (100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0:100) at 120 mg L–1 total N on leaf nutrient concentrations, fruit yield and fruit characteristics were investigated in another long-term experiment with plants grown in sand cultures. Nitrogen concentrations in leaves were highest when plants were provided with either NO3 or NH4 + as a sole source of N. Lowest N concentration in leaves was found with a 75:25 NO3 -N/NH4 +-N ratio. With increasing proportions of NH4 + in the N supply, leaf nutrients such as P, Mg, Fe and Cu increased, whereas Ca, K, Mn and Zn decreased. Yield in number of fruits per tree was increased significantly by supplying all N as NH4 +, although fruit weight was reduced. The number of fruits per tree was lowest with the 75:25 NO3 -N:NH4 +-N ratio, but in this treatment fruits reached their highest weight. Rind thickness, juice acidity, and colour index of fruits decreased with increasing NH4 + in the N supply, whereas the % pulp and maturity index increased. Percent of juice in fruits and total soluble solids were only slightly affected by NO3 :NH4 + ratio.
