In this paper we consider the Hopf bifurcation and synchronization in the two coupled Hindmarsh–Rose excitable systems with chemical coupling and time-delay. We surveyed the conditions for Hopf bifurcations by means of dynamical bifurcation analysis and numerical simulation. The results show that the coupled excitable systems with no delay have supercritical Hopf bifurcation, while the delayed system undergoes Hopf bifurcations at critical time delays when coupling strength lies in a particular region. We also investigated the effect of the delay on the transition of bursting synchronization in the coupled system. The results are helpful for us to better understand the dynamical properties of excitable systems and the biological mechanism of information encoding and cognitive activity.

In this paper we explore how the time delay induced Hopf-bifurcation interacts with Turing instability to determine the resulting spatial patterns. For this study, we consider a delayed prey–predator model with Holling type-II functional response and intra-specific competition among the predators. Analytical criteria for the delay induced Hopf-bifurcation and for the delayed spatio-temporal model are provided with numerical example to validate the analytical results. Exhaustive numerical simulation reveals the appearance of three types of stationary patterns, cold spot, labyrinthine, mixture of stripe-spot and two non-stationary patterns, quasi-periodic and spatio-temporal chaotic patterns. The qualitative features of the patterns for the non-delayed and the delayed spatio-temporal model are the same but their occurrence is solely controlled by the temporal parameters, rate of diffusivity and magnitude of the time delay. It is evident that the magnitude of time delay parameter beyond the Hopf-bifurcation threshold mostly produces spatio-temporal chaotic patterns.  相似文献

Effects of immune delay on symmetric dynamics are investigated within a model of antigenic variation in malaria. Using isotypic decomposition of the phase space, stability problem is reduced to the analysis of a cubic transcendental equation for the eigenvalues. This allows one to identify periodic solutions with different symmetries arising at a Hopf bifurcation. In the case of small immune delay, the boundary of the Hopf bifurcation is found in a closed form in terms of system parameters. For arbitrary values of the time delay, general expressions for the critical time delay are found, which indicate bifurcation to an odd or even periodic solution. Numerical simulations of the full system are performed to illustrate different types of dynamical behaviour. The results of this analysis are quite generic and can be used to study within-host dynamics of many infectious diseases.  相似文献

Gamma oscillations can synchronize with near zero phase lag over multiple cortical regions and between hemispheres, and between two distal sites in hippocampal slices. How synchronization can take place over long distances in a stable manner is considered an open question. The phase resetting curve (PRC) keeps track of how much an input advances or delays the next spike, depending upon where in the cycle it is received. We use PRCs under the assumption of pulsatile coupling to derive existence and stability criteria for 1:1 phase-locking that arises via bidirectional pulse coupling of two limit cycle oscillators with a conduction delay of any duration for any 1:1 firing pattern. The coupling can be strong as long as the effect of one input dissipates before the next input is received. We show the form that the generic synchronous and anti-phase solutions take in a system of two identical, identically pulse-coupled oscillators with identical delays. The stability criterion has a simple form that depends only on the slopes of the PRCs at the phases at which inputs are received and on the number of cycles required to complete the delayed feedback loop. The number of cycles required to complete the delayed feedback loop depends upon both the value of the delay and the firing pattern. We successfully tested the predictions of our methods on networks of model neurons. The criteria can easily be extended to include the effect of an input on the cycle after the one in which it is received.  相似文献

We are interested in noise-induced firings of subthreshold neurons which may be used for encoding environmental stimuli. Noise-induced population synchronization was previously studied only for the case of global coupling, unlike the case of subthreshold spiking neurons. Hence, we investigate the effect of complex network architecture on noise-induced synchronization in an inhibitory population of subthreshold bursting Hindmarsh–Rose neurons. For modeling complex synaptic connectivity, we consider the Watts–Strogatz small-world network which interpolates between regular lattice and random network via rewiring, and investigate the effect of small-world connectivity on emergence of noise-induced population synchronization. Thus, noise-induced burst synchronization (synchrony on the slow bursting time scale) and spike synchronization (synchrony on the fast spike time scale) are found to appear in a synchronized region of the JD plane (J: synaptic inhibition strength and D: noise intensity). As the rewiring probability p is decreased from 1 (random network) to 0 (regular lattice), the region of spike synchronization shrinks rapidly in the JD plane, while the region of the burst synchronization decreases slowly. We separate the slow bursting and the fast spiking time scales via frequency filtering, and characterize the noise-induced burst and spike synchronizations by employing realistic order parameters and statistical-mechanical measures introduced in our recent work. Thus, the bursting and spiking thresholds for the burst and spike synchronization transitions are determined in terms of the bursting and spiking order parameters, respectively. Furthermore, we also measure the degrees of burst and spike synchronizations in terms of the statistical-mechanical bursting and spiking measures, respectively.  相似文献

The synchronization transitions in Newman-Watts small-world neuronal networks (SWNNs) induced by time delay and long-range connection (LRC) probability have been investigated by synchronization parameter and space-time plots. Four distinct parameter regions, that is, asynchronous region, transition region, synchronous region, and oscillatory region have been discovered at certain LRC probability as time delay is increased. Interestingly, desynchronization is observed in oscillatory region. More importantly, we consider the spatiotemporal patterns obtained in delayed Newman-Watts SWNNs are the competition results between long-range drivings (LRDs) and neighboring interactions. In addition, for moderate time delay, the synchronization of neuronal network can be enhanced remarkably by increasing LRC probability. Furthermore, lag synchronization has been found between weak synchronization and complete synchronization as LRC probability is a little less than 1.0. Finally, the two necessary conditions, moderate time delay and large numbers of LRCs, are exposed explicitly for synchronization in delayed Newman-Watts SWNNs.  相似文献

In this paper, a predator–prey system with harvesting prey and disease in prey species is given. In the absence of time delay, the existence and stability of all equilibria are investigated. In the presence of time delay, some sufficient conditions of the local stability of the positive equilibrium and the existence of Hopf bifurcation are obtained by analysing the corresponding characteristic equation, and the properties of Hopf bifurcation are given by using the normal form theory and centre manifold theorem. Furthermore, an optimal harvesting policy is investigated by applying the Pontryagin's Maximum Principle. Numerical simulations are performed to support our analytic results.  相似文献

Transient oscillations induced by delayed growth response in the chemostat   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In this paper, in order to try to account for the transient oscillations observed in chemostat experiments, we consider a model of single species growth in a chemostat that involves delayed growth response. The time delay models the lag involved in the nutrient conversion process. Both monotone response functions and nonmonotone response functions are considered. The nonmonotone response function models the inhibitory effects of growth response of certain nutrients when concentrations are too high. By applying local and global Hopf bifurcation theorems, we prove that the model has unstable periodic solutions that bifurcate from unstable nonnegative equilibria as the parameter measuring the delay passes through certain critical values and that these local periodic solutions can persist, even if the delay parameter moves far from the critical (local) bifurcation values. When there are two positive equilibria, then positive periodic solutions can exist. When there is a unique positive equilibrium, the model does not have positive periodic oscillations and the unique positive equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable. However, the model can have periodic solutions that change sign. Although these solutions are not biologically meaningful, provided the initial data starts close enough to the unstable manifold of one of these periodic solutions they may still help to account for the transient oscillations that have been frequently observed in chemostat experiments. Numerical simulations are provided to illustrate that the model has varying degrees of transient oscillatory behaviour that can be controlled by the choice of the initial data.Mathematics Subject Classification: 34D20, 34K20, 92D25Research was partially supported by NSERC of Canada. This work was partly done while this author was a postdoc at McMaster.  相似文献

Classical receptive fields (cRF) increase in size from the retina to higher visual centers. The present work shows how temporal properties, in particular lateral spike velocity and spike input correlation, can affect cRF size and position without visual experience. We demonstrate how these properties are related to the spatial range of cortical synchronization if Hebbian learning dominates early development. For this, a largely reduced model of two successive levels of the visual cortex is developed (e.g., areas V1 and V2). It consists of retinotopic networks of spiking neurons with constant spike velocity in lateral connections. Feedforward connections between level 1 and 2 are additive and determine cRF size and shape, while lateral connections within level 1 are modulatory and affect the cortical range of synchronization. Input during development is mimicked by spike trains with spatially homogeneous properties and a confined temporal correlation width. During learning, the homogeneous lateral coupling shrinks to limited coupling structures defining synchronization and related association fields (AF). The size of level-1 synchronization fields determines the lateral coupling range of developing level-1-to-2 connections and, thus, the size of level-2 cRFs, even if the feedforward connections have distance-independent delays. AFs and cRFs increase with spike velocity in the lateral network and temporal correlation width of the input. Our results suggest that AF size of V1 and cRF size of V2 neurons are confined during learning by the temporal width of input correlations and the spike velocity in lateral connections without the need of visual experience. During learning from visual experience, a similar influence of AF size on the cRF size may be operative at successive levels of processing, including other parts of the visual system.  相似文献

Measuring synchronization in neuronal networks for biosensor applications   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Cultures of neurons can be grown on microelectrode arrays (MEAs), so that their spike and burst activity can be monitored. These activity patterns are quite sensitive to changes in the environment, such as chemical exposure, and hence the cultures can be used as biosensors. One key issue in analyzing the data from neuronal networks is how to quantify the level of synchronization among different units, which represent different neurons in the network. In this paper, we propose a synchronization metric, based on the statistical distribution of unit-to-unit correlation coefficients. We show that this synchronization metric changes significantly when the networks are exposed to bicuculline, strychnine, or 2,3-dioxo-6-nitro-l,2,3,4-tetrahydrobenzoquinoxaline-7-sulphonamide (NBQX). For that reason, this metric can be used to characterize pharmacologically induced changes in a network, either for research or for biosensor applications.  相似文献

The effects of microinjections of D1 selective dopaminergic substances into the medial frontal cortex (MFC) on information storage and proactive interference during delayed (the delay in 3 s) and non-delayed choice in Y-maze were studied. Bilateral microinjection of D1 receptor antagonist SCH 23390 (1 nM, 1 microliter) impaired both delayed and non-delayed choice. In contrast, microinjections of D1 receptor agonist SKF 38393 (1 nM) into the MFC significantly improved the delayed performance and did not influence the non-delayed choice. The effects of proactive interference caused by SCH 23390 and SKF 38393 injections were more pronounced in delayed choice condition than in the non-delayed task. Spatial bias in animal behavior was revealed after the SCH 23390 injections: during erroneous choices rats more frequently turned in the same direction as preferred in a rotation test. The results suggest that impairment of delayed performance in Y-maze observed under the blockade of D1-mediated neurotransmission in the MFC occurs due to enhancement of the processes of proactive interference and disinhibition of the spatial set.  相似文献

In this paper, the synchronization problem for delayed continuous time nonlinear complex neural networks is considered. The delay dependent state feed back synchronization gain matrix is obtained by considering more general case of time-varying delay. Using Lyapunov stability theory, the sufficient synchronization criteria are derived in terms of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). By decomposing the delay interval into multiple equidistant subintervals, Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals (LKFs) are constructed on these intervals. Employing these LKFs, new delay dependent synchronization criteria are proposed in terms of LMIs for two cases with and without derivative of time-varying delay. Numerical examples are illustrated to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.  相似文献

Effects of time delay on the local and global synchronization in small-world neuronal networks with chemical synapses are investigated in this paper. Numerical results show that, for both excitatory and inhibitory coupling types, the information transmission delay can always induce synchronization transitions of spiking neurons in small-world networks. In particular, regions of in-phase and out-of-phase synchronization of connected neurons emerge intermittently as the synaptic delay increases. For excitatory coupling, all transitions to spiking synchronization occur approximately at integer multiples of the firing period of individual neurons; while for inhibitory coupling, these transitions appear at the odd multiples of the half of the firing period of neurons. More importantly, the local synchronization transition is more profound than the global synchronization transition, depending on the type of coupling synapse. For excitatory synapses, the local in-phase synchronization observed for some values of the delay also occur at a global scale; while for inhibitory ones, this synchronization, observed at the local scale, disappears at a global scale. Furthermore, the small-world structure can also affect the phase synchronization of neuronal networks. It is demonstrated that increasing the rewiring probability can always improve the global synchronization of neuronal activity, but has little effect on the local synchronization of neighboring neurons.  相似文献

One of the main challenges in ecology is to determine the cause of population fluctuations. Both theoretical and empirical studies suggest that delayed density dependence instigates cyclic behavior in many populations; however, underlying mechanisms through which this occurs are often difficult to determine and may vary within species. In this paper, we consider single species population dynamics affected by the Allee effect coupled with discrete time delay. We use two different mathematical formulations of the Allee effect and analyze (both analytically and numerically) the role of time delay in different feedback mechanisms such as competition and cooperation. The bifurcation value of the delay (that results in the Hopf bifurcation) as a function of the strength of the Allee effect is obtained analytically. Interestingly, depending on the chosen delayed mechanism, even a large time delay may not necessarily lead to instability. We also show that, in case the time delay affects positive feedback (such as cooperation), the population dynamics can lead to self-organized formation of intermediate quasi-stationary states. Finally, we discuss ecological implications of our findings.  相似文献

Synchronous network excitation is believed to play an outstanding role in neuronal information processing. Due to the stochastic nature of the contributing neurons, however, those synchronized states are difficult to detect in electrode recordings. We present a framework and a model for the identification of such network states and of their dynamics in a specific experimental situation. Our approach operationalizes the notion of neuronal groups forming assemblies via synchronization based on experimentally obtained spike trains. The dynamics of such groups is reflected in the sequence of synchronized states, which we describe as a renewal dynamics. We furthermore introduce a rate function which is dependent on the internal network phase that quantifies the activity of neurons contributing to the observed spike train. This constitutes a hidden state model which is formally equivalent to a hidden Markov model, and all its parameters can be accurately determined from the experimental time series using the Baum-Welch algorithm. We apply our method to recordings from the cat visual cortex which exhibit oscillations and synchronizations. The parameters obtained for the hidden state model uncover characteristic properties of the system including synchronization, oscillation, switching, background activity and correlations. In applications involving multielectrode recordings, the extracted models quantify the extent of assembly formation and can be used for a temporally precise localization of system states underlying a specific spike train. Movement preparation is considered to be based on central processes which are responsible for improving motor performance. For instance, it has been shown that motor cortical neurones change their activity selectively in relation to prior information about movement parameters. However, it is not clear how groups of neurones dynamically organize their activity to cope with computational demands. The aim of the study was to compare the firing rate of multiple simultaneously recorded neurones with the interaction between them by describing not only the frequency of occurrence of epochs of significant synchronization, but also its modulation in time and its changes in temporal precision during an instructed delay. Multiple single-neurone activity was thus recorded in monkey motor cortex during the performance of two different delayed multi-directional pointing tasks. In order to detect conspicuous spike coincidences in simultaneously recorded spike trains by tolerating temporal jitter ranging from 0 to 20 ms and to calculate their statistical significance, a modified method of the 'Unitary Events' analysis was used. Two main results were obtained. First, simultaneously recorded neurones synchronize their spiking activity in a highly dynamic way. Synchronization becomes significant only during short periods (about 100 to 200 ms). Several such periods occurred during a behavioural trial more or less regularly. Second, in many pairs of neurones, the temporal precision of synchronous activity was highest at the end of the preparatory period. As a matter of fact, at the beginning of this period, after the presentation of the preparatory signal, neurones significantly synchronize their spiking activity, but with low temporal precision. As time advances, significant synchronization becomes more precise. Data indicate that not only the discharge rate is involved in preparatory processes, but also temporal aspects of neuronal activity as expressed in the precise synchronization of individual action potentials.  相似文献
