SYNOPSIS Total numbers and distribution of genera, subgenera and species were determined for the ciliate protozoa in rumen contents of 4 Brazilian water buffalo Bubalus bubalis Linnaeus. The fauna of one animal, housed in close proximity to European and zebu-type cattle, differed considerably from that of the remaining animals, which were somewhat isolated on a large ranch. Several of the protozoan species observed in the semi-isolated animals were first described in rumen contents from humped Indian cattle, and their subsequent occurrence in other hosts and geographic locations has been limited or absent. In all, 49 different species of protozoa were found, 8 of which have not been previously described. Three of the new species belong to the genus Entodinium: E. ciculum sp. n., E. spinonucleatum sp. n. and E. triangulum sp. n.: 4 to Diplodinium (Ostracodinium): D. (O.) brazili sp. n., D. (O.) esalqum sp. n., D. (O.) nucleolobum sp. n., and D. (O.) tiete sp. n.; and one to Diplodinium (Eudiplodinium): D. (E.) bubalus sp. n.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Parentodinium africanum was observed in rumen contents of four Brazilian cattle and constituted 4.4, 0.9, > 0.1, and 10.0% of the total ciliates. This appears to be the first observation of the family Cycloposthiidae in the rumen habitat. Blepharoconus krugerensis, previously observed in the intestines of the elephant, and an unknown species of ciliate with many characteristics similar to the family Paraisotrichidae were each observed in a single animal. A new subspecies, Diplodinium flabellum laterospinatum n. subsp., is also described. Total number of ciliates per ml of rumen contents ranged from 9.0 to 51.2 × 104 and included an overall total of 55 species and 4 subspecies.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The composition of the rumen ciliate fauna in 76 Kafue lechwe inhabiting a limited area in Zambia was surveyed and five genera containing 24 species with 16 formae belonging to the family Ophryoscolecidae were identified. Four new species belonging to Diplodiniinae were recognized and described as Diplodinium lochinvarense n. sp., Diplodinium leche n. sp., Diplodinium zambiense n. sp., and Metadinium ossiculi n. sp. In addition, Ostracodinium gracile form fissilaminatum Dogiel, 1932 was found for the second time and described as Metadinium fissilaminatum n. comb. The species composition was fairly unusual. Seven of the species have been found only in African wild antelopes and these species were found more frequently than cosmopolitan species. There was no evidence of isotrichid species. The average density of ciliates per 1 ml of the rumen fluid was 25.7 times 104, and the number of ciliate species per head of host was 10.8.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Diplodinium (Ostracodinium) minorum sp. n., observed in rumen contents from several domestic sheep, resembles Diplodinium (O.) ypsilon and Diplodinium (O.) magnum. It differs from the latter 2 species primarily in the size and proportions of the body, size of the rectum and anus, and in the presence of a short right caudal lobe in many individuals. In the samples studied, D. (O.) minorum constituted from 0.06 to 0.67% of the total rumen ciliate population.  相似文献

Total numbers, generic distribution and percentage species distribution were determined for the ciliate protozoa in rumen contents obtained from Alaskan moose (Alces americana), musk-ox (Ovibos moschatus) and Dall mountain sheep (Ovis dalli). The musk-ox has a fauna somewhat similar to that previously observed in reindeer and caribou. In contrast, only protozoa in the genus Entodinium were observed in moose, while Dall mountain sheep have a fauna unique among Alaskan ruminants studied to date. Other than Entodinium exiguum which was common to all animals, only 2 additional species of Entodinium, observed in the moose and musk-ox, occurred in more than one animal species. Four new species of protozoa are described, Entodinium dalli sp.n., Entodinium constrictum sp.n. and Polyplastron alaskum sp.n. from the Dall mountain sheep and Entodinium alces sp.n. from moose.  相似文献

Samples of rumen contents were obtained from 13 musk-oxen living on Banks Island, N.W.T., Canada. Total protozoan numbers ranged from 38.5 to 124.6 times 104 per ml of rumen contents with a mean generic distribution of 52.4%Entodinium, 45.9%Diplodinium, and 1.7%Epidinium. A total of 18 protozoan species were found, six of which have not previously been observed in this host, i.e. D. (Diplodinium) costatum, D. (Ostracodinium) gracile, D. (Ostracodinium) trivesiculatum. D. (Eudiplodinium) medium, Epidinium quadricaudatum, and Epidinium parvicaudatum. Two new species of protozoa are described, Entodinium ovibos n. sp. and Diplodinium (Eudiplodinium) banksi n. sp.  相似文献

Infraciliature and morphogenesis of three rumen ophryoscolecid ciliates, Diplodinium polygonale Dogiel, 1925, Diplodinium leche Imai et al., 1992, and Diplodinium nanum Imai, 1988, are described from pyridinated silver carbonate-impregnated specimens. These three species have two polybrachykineties in the buccal area and a polybrachykinety in the dorsal ciliary zone. The vestibular polybrachykinety (VP) of D. polygonale and D. leche arises from the dorsal extremity of the adoral polybrachykinety (AP) as in Entodinium species, extending toward the left in D. polygonale and toward the left posterior in D. leche. The VP of D. nanum arises from the inner side of the AP, separate from its dorsal extremity, as in other Diplodinium species and extends toward the left posterior. These series of the polybrachykinety arrangements in D. polygonale, D. leche, and D. nanum can be regarded as transitional forms in the evolution of an Entodinium-like ancestor to Diplodinium. Morphogenesis of these three Diplodinium species is not different from that of other Diplodinium species.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Composition of rumen ciliate fauna in five Zambian, sassaby antelopes was determined. Six genera, 18 species, and four forms were identified. One new species and form, belonging to the subfamily Diplodiniinae, were found, then labeled Ostracodinium damaliscus n. sp. and Diplodinium bubalidis f. aspinosum n. f., respectively. Only ophryoscolecid species were present while isotrichids were absent. Twelve of 18 total species are commmonly found in African antelopes. Three of those 12 species, Entodinium fyferi, Enoploplastron garstangi and Opisthotrichum janus , are only found in African antelopes. Percentage composition was low in the genera ml of rumen fluid, and the average number of ciliate species per host was 17.2.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The composition of the fauna of rumen ciliates in zebu cattle in Kenya was surveyed and 13 genera containing 51 species with 19 formae were identified. Four new species were recognized, then described as Diplodinium africanum n. sp., Diplodinium nanum n. sp., Eudiplodinium kenyensis n. sp., and Ostracodinium iwawoi n. sp. In addition, Buetschlia triciliata and Ostracodinium stokyi were found for the second and third times and described as Hsiungia triciliata n. comb. and Enoploplastron stokyi n. stat., with two formae, respectively. The species composition was similar to that of Indian zebu but several species were considered to originate from African native ruminants. In the percentage composition of genera, the numbers of Entodinium, which normally predominate in rumens in other areas, were very low.  相似文献

A revision of the presently available materialrefered to the species Elephas reckiDietrich.. 1915, collected in East african plio-pleistocene levels, leads up to distinguish a succession of five subspecies within the species: E. r. brumpti n. subsp.; E. r. shungurensis n. subsp.; E. r. atavusArambourg 1947; E. r. ileretensis n. subsp. and E. r. reckiDietrich,, 1915.The five subspecies diagnosis are proposed here. They together represent a monophyletic lineage, the study of which allows to propose new interpretations regarding the history and evolutionary trends of the genus in Africa.  相似文献

Stachys recta L. is a very polymorphous species in which numerous subspecies were recognised. S. recta L. subsp. serpentini (Fiori) Arrigoni is a typical endemism growing on serpentine soils in northern Apennines and particularly in Tuscany (Italy). In order to contribute to a better knowledge of this plant and to its differentiation with respect to S. recta L. subsp. recta, the micromorphological characters (non-glandular and glandular trichomes) and the essential oil composition of the two subspecies were investigated. Micromorphological characters were studied using scanning and transmission electron microscopy, while light microscopy was used for histochemical observations. Essential oil analysis was carried out by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. In the two examined taxa, the morphology and distribution of glandular and non-glandular trichomes, and the different essential oil composition, may be considered distinctive characters at subspecies level. This is consistent with the taxonomic classification considering S. recta subsp. serpentini a subordinate taxon of S. recta.  相似文献

Morphological features of the four morphotypes of the rumen ciliate, Eodinium posterovesiculatum, are described from pyridinated silver carbonate-impregnated specimens. Infraciliary bands are compared with those of Entodinium bursa and Diplodinium dentatum. In Entodinium bursa, the adoral polybrachykinety is "C" shaped and the vestibular polybrachykinety extends from the dorsal extremity of the adoral polybrachykinety as in other Entodinium species. In Diplodinium dentatum, the adoral polybrachykinety encircles most of the circumference of the vestibular opening and the vestibular polybrachykinety extends from the inner side of the adoral polybrachykinety as in other Diplodinium species. Infraciliary bands in Eodinium posterovesiculatum encircle the whole circumference of the vestibular opening and are, therefore, distinct from Entodinium, Diplodinium and other ciliates in the family Ophryoscolecidae. In Eodinium posterovesiculatum, the adoral polybrachykinety and the anterior part of the vestibular polybrachykinety encircle the vestibular opening. The wide and long vestibular polybrachykinety extends along the right wall of the tubular vestibulum and is bordered by a kinety. Kinetids in the central part of the vestibular polybrachykinety are randomly disposed. The genus Eodinium is valid because of this characteristic polybrachykinety arrangement in Eodinium posterovesiculatum.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of selected protozoa on the degradation and concentration of chitin and the numbers of fungal zoospores in the rumen fluid of sheep. Three adult ewes were fed a hay-concentrate diet, defaunated, then monofaunated with Entodinium caudatum or Diploplastron affine alone and refaunated with natural rumen fauna. The average density of the protozoa population varied from 6.1 · 104 (D. affine) to 42.2 · 104 cells/ml rumen fluid (natural rumen fauna). The inoculation of protozoa in the rumen of defaunated sheep increased the total activity of chitinolytic enzymes from 2.9 to 3.6 μmol N-acetylglucosamine/g dry matter (DM) of rumen fluid per min, the chitin concentration from 6.3 to 7.2 mg/g DM of rumen fluid and the number of fungal zoospores from 8.1 to 10.9 · 105 cells/ml rumen fluid. All examined indices showed diurnal variations. Ciliate population density was highest immediately prior to feeding and lowest at 4 h thereafter. The opposite effects were observed for the numbers of fungal zoospores, the chitin concentration and chitinolytic activity. Furthermore, it was found that chitin from zoospores may account for up to 95% of total microbial chitin in the rumen fluid of sheep. In summary, the examined ciliate species showed the ability of chitin degradation as well as a positive influence on the development of the ruminal fungal population.  相似文献

Aims: This study was conducted to clarify the taxonomic status of Francisella sp. strain Ehime‐1, a fish pathogen, in relation to the fish pathogens F. piscicida and F. philomiragia subsp. noatunensis and to F. philomiragia subsp. philomiragia. Methods and Results: Francisella sp. Ehime‐1 was compared to F. piscicida, F. philomiragia subsp. noatunensis and several F. philomiragia subsp. philomiragia isolates through sequencing of the 16S rRNA‐gene and several house‐keeping genes and determination of biochemical and phenotypic properties. Results show that F. piscicida is indistinguishable from F. philomiragia subsp. noatunensis by sequence and phenotypic traits. Francisella sp. Ehime‐1 and F. philomiragia subsp. noatunensis are clearly separated from F. philomiragia. Francisella sp. Ehime‐1 is biochemically, phenotypically and genetically different from F. philomiragia subsp. noatunensis (=F. piscicida), but DNA–DNA hybridization does not clearly support establishment as a separate species (level of relatedness 64% and 73·4%, mean 68·7%). Conclusions: We propose to elevate F. philomiragia subsp. noatunensis to species rank as F. noatunensis comb. nov., while F. piscicida is considered a heterotypic synonym of F. noatunensis comb. nov. Evidence suggests that Francisella sp. Ehime‐1 represents a novel subspecies of F. noatunensis, for which the name F. noatunensis subsp. orientalis subsp. nov. is proposed (=DSM21254T, = LMG24544T). Significance and Impact of the Study: This study contributes to the taxonomy and characteristics of fish‐pathogenic Francisella spp.  相似文献

The following crosses were made using four recognized species/subspecies and a new population of Guizotia, referred to as Chelelu after the name of the locality in Ethiopia from which it was collected: G. scabra subsp. schimperi × Chelelu, Chelelu × G. scabra subsp. scabra, G. zavattarii × G. arborescens and Chelelu × G. zavattarii (all accessions with 2n=30). Plant morphology as well as mitotic and meiotic chromosome analysis confirmed the hybrid nature of the obtained progeny. At metaphase I of meiosis, the F1 hybrid plants (2n=30) showed a mean of about 95%, 31%, 63% and 0.50% of the pollen mother cells with 15 bivalents, and a mean of about 14.95, 13.75, 14.40 and 7.86 bivalents per cell, respectively. The respective mean pollen stainability was about 67%, 19%, 31% and 2%. From the results it was concluded that Chelelu is more closely related to G. scabra subsp. schimperi than to G. scabra subsp. scabra but more to the latter than to G. zavattarii. Guizotia zavattarii and G. arborescens are closely related to each other. Based on the cytological observations made, the probable basic chromosome number for the genus is discussed.
