This study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary vitamin E concentration on growth performance, iron-catalyzed lipid peroxidation in liver and muscle tissue, and erythrocyte fragility of transgenic growth hormone coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch). Fish were fed one of four isoenergetic and isonitrogenous experimental diets that contained either 11, 29, 50, or 105 IU of vitamin E/kg. Following the 10-week feeding trial, no significant (P>0.05) diet-related differences were detected in growth, whole body proximate composition or erythrocyte fragility. The vitamin E contents of liver and muscle, however, were affected by the dietary treatment. Fish fed diets containing > or =50 IU of vitamin E/kg had significantly increased vitamin E concentrations in their tissues. Iron-catalyzed lipid peroxidation of liver and muscle tissue of fish fed elevated dietary vitamin E (> or =50 IU vitamin E/kg diet) was significantly lower (P<0.05) than that noted for fish fed the diet containing no supplemental vitamin E. The results indicated that changes in tissue lipid peroxidation measurements precede clinical signs of sub-optimal vitamin E intake.  相似文献

The fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) was employed to examine if dietary vitamin E supplementation could protect the inner ear from the deleterious effects of noise. Fish were fed one of the three experimental diets containing either: (1) low vitamin E content (14.5 mg/kg diet as alpha-tocopheryl acetate), (2) an adequate amount of vitamin E (50 mg/kg), or (3) high vitamin E content (450 mg/kg). After 4 weeks on the diet, fish were exposed to either 2 or 24 h of intense white noise (142 dB re: 1 microPa, bandwidth 0.3-4.0 kHz). Auditory thresholds were measured, using the auditory brainstem response (ABR) technique, within 0.5 days following noise exposure or within a recovery period of 1.5 days. Additionally, liver samples were analyzed for vitamin E content. Increased vitamin E supplementation was dose-dependently associated with a reduction in statistically significant threshold shifts after noise exposure and an enhancement of recovery (i.e., more complete recovery over a shorter period) for fish exposed to either 2 or 24 h of noise. The results obtained suggest that dietary vitamin E affords protection against noise exposure in a cyprinid fish.  相似文献

This study was designed to examine the effects of dietary vitamin E (VE) on modulation of immune responses when supplied with two levels of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 HUFA) in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. Six semipurified diets were prepared containing three levels of dietary VE (0, 100 or 1000 mg alpha-tocopheryl acetate kg(-1) diet) and n-3 HUFA either at 20 or 48% of dietary lipid provided from fish oil or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) concentrated fish oil respectively. The diets were fed to rainbow trout (100 g initial mean weight) for 15 weeks. The VE, vitamin C (VC) content in plasma and tissues and the nonspecific immune responses, both humoral (alternative complement activity, total immunoglobulin) and cellular (phagocytosis, nonspecific cytotoxicity) were examined. VE contents in the kidney reflected the dietary input but were lower in fish fed 48% n-3 HUFA diets, and could have impaired some of immune responses compared to fish fed 20% n-3 HUFA. VC contents in kidney followed the same pattern as VE. Both humoral and cellular immune functions deteriorated in fish fed VE deficient diets whereas improvement in most of the parameters corresponded to its supplementation. However, the higher dose of dietary VE did not substantially enhance the responses assayed compared to the 100 mg dose. Besides clearly indicating the role of VE in maintaining the immune functions in fish in relation to dietary n-3 HUFA, this study has revealed that optimum health benefits could be achieved when VE is maintained slightly above the levels generally recommended for normal growth.  相似文献

This study examined the modulation of the antioxidant status and related physiological changes in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss under different levels of dietary n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 HUFA) and vitamin E. Six diets containing 0, 100 or 1000 mg alpha-tocopheryl acetate kg(-1) diet and 20% or 48% n-3 HUFA provided by normal fish oil or DHA concentrated fish oil, respectively, were fed to 100 g size fish for 15 weeks. Growth of fish fed vitamin E deficient diets under both levels of n-3 HUFA were slightly retarded, accompanied by a reduction of hematocrit values, an enlargement of liver and spleen, an elevation of lipid hydroperoxide in red blood cell and the antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase). Supplementation of vitamin E could protect the fish from these adverse effects; however the higher dose was no better compared to the moderate dose. The modulations were clearly seen in fish fed high n-3 HUFA (48%) since they were under greater oxidative stress as indicated by the markers, lipid hydroperoxide and 8-isoprostane. The increased activity of enzymes corresponds to physiological mechanisms combating the elevation of free radicals under oxidative stress and a dietary fatty acid profile-dependent moderate dose of vitamin E is all that is required to function as an effective antioxidant.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of long chain fatty acids (C > or = 20 LCP) of the n-3 series, vitamin E and vitamin C on the antioxidant capacity of rabbit buck and on semen characteristics. Fifty male rabbits at 30 days were randomly assigned to five different diets: Control (50 mg x kg(-1) diet alpha-tocopheryl acetate), Vitamin E (200 mg x kg(-1) diet alpha-tocopheryl acetate), n-3 (2% ROPUFA oil + 50 mg x kg(-1) diet alpha-tocopheryl acetate), n-3 + E (2% ROPUFA oil + 200 mg x kg(-1) diet alpha-tocopheryl acetate) and n-3 + E C (2% ROPUFA oil + 200 mg x kg(-1) diet alpha-tocopheryl acetate + 0.5 g x L(-1) vitamin C in the drinking water). The levels of vitamins E and C and reactive oxygen metabolites (ROMs) in the blood plasma were evaluated at different ages. The antioxidant capacity and ROMs of seminal plasma, the fatty acid profile of sperm phospholipids, the semen traits and the oxidative processes during storage (24 h at + 4 degrees C) were carried out weekly for 5 wk starting from the 5th month of age. Vitamin E addition showed enough antioxidant protection only when associated with no lipid enriched diets. The n-3 supplementation modified the fatty acid profile of the spermatozoa membrane and simultaneously enhanced oxidative processes. Only the association with supranutritional levels of vitamins E and C inhibited the oxidative processes and improved the characteristics of fresh and stored rabbit semen.  相似文献

Juvenile soft-shelled turtles (Pelodiscus sinensis) were fed 7 diets containing 8% of lard, soybean oil, olive oil, menhaden fish oil, or mixtures of 1 to 1 ratio of fish oil and lard, soybean oil, olive oil for 10 weeks. Growth and muscle proximate compositions of the turtles were not affected by different dietary treatments (p>0.05). Fatty acid profiles in muscle polar lipids, muscle non-polar lipids, and liver polar lipids reflected the fatty acid composition of dietary lipid source. Turtles fed diets containing fish oil generally contained significantly higher (p<0.05) proportion of highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) in both polar and non-polar lipids of muscle and polar fraction of liver lipids than those fed other oils. Non-polar fraction of liver lipids from all groups of turtles contained less than 1% of HUFA. All turtles contained relatively high proportions of oleic acid in their lipids regardless of the dietary lipid source. Further, lipid peroxidation in both muscle tissue and liver microsomes of turtles fed fish oil as the sole lipid source was greater (p<0.05) than those fed fish oil-free diets. Turtles fed olive oil as the sole lipid source had the lowest lipid peroxidation rate among all dietary groups. The results indicate that dietary n-3 HUFA may not be crucial for optimal growth of soft-shelled turtles although they may be used for metabolic purpose. Further, high level of dietary HUFA not only increases the HUFA content in turtle tissues, but also enhances the susceptibility of these tissues to lipid peroxidation.  相似文献

Dietary lipids containing equal portions of soybean oil and fish oil were fed to juvenile Chinese soft-shelled turtle, Pelodiscus sinensis, at supplementation level of 0 to 15% for 8 weeks. Tissue fat contents of turtles increased when dietary lipid concentration increased. Fatty acid profiles for turtles fed diets supplemented with 6% or higher levels of lipids were similar to those in dietary lipids. On absolute value basis, fatty acids of 14-, 16-, and 18-carbons in muscle of turtles fed diet without lipid supplementation were higher than those in the initial turtle muscle. Among them, C16:1 and C18:1 was approximately 4 and 2 fold higher, respectively, than that of the initial turtles. By contrast, absolute amounts of C20:5 and C22:6 in muscle of turtles fed diet without lipid supplementation were slightly less than those in the initial turtles. For turtles fed lipid supplemented diets, tissue C20:5 and C22:6, however, increased when dietary lipid level increased. These results suggest that soft-shelled turtles are capable of synthesizing fatty acids up to 18 carbons from other nutrients and that they may have limited or no ability to synthesize highly unsaturated fatty acids. Lipid peroxidation measured by thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances in tissues of turtles fed 12% and 15% lipids was greater (p<0.05) than that in turtles fed 3% to 9% lipids. This could be due to high lipid and unsaturated fatty acid content in these tissues. On lipid basis, lipid peroxidation in turtles fed diet without lipid supplementation was the highest among all groups suggesting the existence of antioxidant factors in the dietary lipids.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine the effects of vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) and vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol acetate) on serum concentrations of lipid peroxidation (MDA) and triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), and some metabolite and mineral in laying hens reared at high ambient temperatures ranging from 25 degrees C to 35 degrees C. One hundred twenty laying hens (18 wk old; Hy-Line) were divided into 4 groups, 30 hens per group. The laying hens were fed either a basal diet (control) or the basal diet supplemented with either 250 mg of L-ascorbic acid/kg of diet (vitamin C), 250 mg of alpha-tocopherol acetate/kg of diet (vitamin E), or 250 mg of L-ascorbic acid plus 250 mg alpha-tocopherol acetate/kg of diet (combination). Separately or as a combination vitamins C and E increased serum vitamin C and vitamin E concentrations (p < 0.001) but decreased serum MDA concentration (p < 0.05). Serum concentrations of vitamin E and vitamin C were found highest but serum MDA concentration was lowest in the combination group. Supplemental vitamins C and E either separately or in a combination increased serum T3 and T4 concentrations (p < 0.05), whereas decreased serum ACTH concentration (p < 0.01). Serum glucose and cholesterol concentrations decreased, whereas serum protein concentration increased (p < 0.05) when vitamins C and E singly or together were added to the diet. Vitamin C and vitamin E supplementation resulted in an increase in serum concentrations of Ca, P, and K (p < 0.01) but a decrease in serum concentration of Na (p < 0.05). The results of the present study suggest that supplemental vitamin C and vitamin E alter serum lipid peroxidation, vitamin C, vitamin E and metabolite status, and diets supplemented with a combination of these two vitamins offer a good management practice in laying hens reared at high temperatures. In addition, the results suggest that dietary vitamin C and vitamin E act synergistically.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of dietary fat, vitamin E, and iron on oxidative damage and antioxidant status in kidneys of mice. Sixty 1-month-old male Swiss-Webster mice were fed a basal vitamin E-deficient diet that contained either 8% fish oil + 2% corn oil or 10% lard with or without 1 g all-rac-alpha-tocopherol acetate or 0.74 g ferric citrate per kilogram of diet for 4 weeks. Significantly (P < 0.05) higher levels of lipid peroxidation products, thiobarbituric acid reactants (TBAR), and conjugated dienes were found in the kidneys of mice fed with fish oil compared with mice fed lard irrespective of vitamin E status. Mice maintained on a vitamin E-deficient diet had significantly higher renal levels of TBAR, but not conjugated dienes, than the supplemented group. Fish oil fed mice receiving vitamin E supplementation had lower levels of alpha-tocopherol than did mice in the lard fed group. Significantly higher levels of ascorbic acid were also found in the kidneys of mice fed with fish oil than were found in mice fed lard. The levels of protein carbonyls and glutathione (GSH), and activities of catalase, superoxide dismutase, selenium (Se)-GSH peroxidase, and non-Se-GSH peroxidase were not significantly altered by dietary fat or vitamin E. Dietary iron had no significant effect on any of the oxidative stress and antioxidant indices measured. The results obtained provide experimental evidence for the pro-oxidant effect of high fish oil intake in mouse kidney and suggest that dietary lipids play a key role in determining cellular susceptibility to oxidative stress.  相似文献

Moison, R. M. W. and Beijersbergen van Henegouwen, G. M. J. Dietary Eicosapentaenoic Acid Prevents Systemic Immunosuppression in Mice Induced by UVB Radiation. Radiat. Res. 156, 36-44 (2001).Reactive oxygen species (ROS) contribute to the immunosuppression induced by UVB radiation. Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil, e.g. eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), can modulate immunoresponsiveness, but because of their susceptibility to ROS-induced damage, they can also challenge the epidermal antioxidant defense system. The influence of dietary supplementation with different omega-3 fatty acids on systemic immunosuppression induced in mice by UVB radiation was studied using the contact hypersensitivity response to trinitrochlorobenzene. In an attempt to study the mechanisms involved, UVB-radiation-induced changes in epidermal antioxidant status were also studied. Mice received high-fat (25% w/w) diets enriched with either oleic acid (control diet), EPA, DHA, or EPA + DHA (MaxEPA). Immunosuppression induced by UVB radiation was 53% in mice fed the oleic acid diet and 69% in mice fed the DHA diet. In contrast, immunosuppression was only 4% and 24% in mice fed the EPA and MaxEPA diets, respectively. Increased lipid peroxidation and decreased vitamin E levels (P < 0.05) were found in unirradiated mice fed the MaxEPA and DHA diets. For all diets, exposure to UVB radiation increased lipid peroxidation (P < 0.05), but levels of glutathione (P < 0.05) and vitamin C (P > 0.05) decreased only in the mice given fish oil. UVB irradiation did not influence vitamin E levels. In conclusion, dietary EPA, but not DHA, protects against UVB-radiation-induced immunosuppression in mice. The degree of protection appears to be related to the amount of EPA incorporated and the ability of the epidermis to maintain an adequate antioxidant level after irradiation.  相似文献

A feeding trial was conducted to determine the dietary vitamin E (DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate, dl-alpha-TOA) requirement and its effect on the non-specific immune responses of juvenile grass shrimp, Penaeus monodon. Purified diets with eight levels (0, 25, 50, 75, 100, 150, 200, 400 mg vitamin E kg diet-1) of supplemental dl-alpha-TOA were fed to P. monodon (mean initial weight 0.29 +/- 0.01 g) for eight weeks. Each diet was fed to three replicate groups of shrimp. Weight gains and total haemocyte count (THC) were higher (P < 0.05) in shrimp fed diets supplemented with 75 and 100 mg vitamin E kg diet-1 than in shrimp fed diets supplemented with 相似文献

This study examined the effect of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) that were supplemented with vitamin E on lipid peroxidation, glutathione-dependent detoxifying enzyme system activity, and lipogenic fatty acid synthase (FAS) expression in rat liver. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed semipurified diets containing either 1% (w/w) corn oil or 10% each of beef tallow, corn oil, perilla oil, and fish oil for 4 wk. Alpha-tocopherol was supplemented in perilla oil (0.015%) and fish oil (0.019%). Hepatic thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, an estimate of lipid peroxidation, were not significantly different among the dietary groups. The glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and glutathione S-transferase activities were all elevated by the polyunsaturated fats, especially fish oil. The activity of FAS was reduced in the polyunsaturated fat-fed groups in the order of fish oil, perilla oil, and corn oil. The mRNA contents decreased in rats that were fed the 10% fat diets, particularly polyunsaturated fats, compared with the rats that were fed the 1% corn oil diet. Similarly, the inhibitory effect was the greatest in fish oil. These results suggest that lipid peroxidation can be minimized by vitamin E; PUFA in itself has a suppressive effect on lipogenic enzyme.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of elevated dietary levels of vitamin E (α‐tocopherol) on growth performance, proximate composition and fatty acid profiles of juvenile silver pomfret, Pampus argenteus. Three semi‐purified experimental diets were formulated to contain 49% protein and 16% lipid. High docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) tuna oil was added to the diets to supplement DHA. A graded level of vitamin E (0‐, 50‐, and 100 mg kg?1) was added to experimental diets 1 to 3, respectively. Analyzed vit. E levels were 155.2, 195.3 and 236.4 mg kg?1 in diets 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The experiment was conducted for 12 weeks with juvenile silver pomfret (29.6 ± 7.6 g) using a flow‐through system consisting of nine 1‐m3 tanks. Each treatment had three replicates and fish were stocked at the rate of 20 m?3. Growth performance and feed utilization parameters of fish fed diets 2 and 3 were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than in fish fed diet 1, but the parameters in diets 2 and 3 did not differ significantly (P > 0.05). Although whole body protein levels were not influenced by the dietary vit. E levels, whole body lipid in fish fed diet 2 was significantly higher than in fish fed the other diets. The whole body vit. E levels in fish fed diet 2 (22.6 mg kg?1) and diet 3 (24.1 mg kg?1) were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than in those fed diet 1 (18.2 mg kg?1). Whole body total saturated fatty acids were significantly lower, and DHA levels higher in fish fed diets 2 and 3 than those fed diet 1. The results of the present study suggest that increasing dietary supplementation of vit. E in high lipid diets enhances the growth performance of fish and that a dietary level of 196 mg kg?1 vit. E is suitable for the growth of silver pomfret.

The influence of dietary vitamin E and Santoquin on lipid peroxidation and liver regeneration in partially-hepatectomized rats was studied. Rats were fed either a basal 10% tocopherol-stripped corn oil diet, the basal diet plus 40 mg dl-alpha-tocopheryl acetate/kg, or the basal diet plus 2 g Santoquin (6-ethoxy-1,2-dihydro-2,2,4-trimethylquinoline)/kg. After 6 weeks, rats fed the antioxidant-deficient diet produced more of the lipid peroxidation product, pentane, than did the rats fed antioxidants. Partial hepatectomy was performed after six and one-half weeks or ten weeks of feeding the diets. At 3 and 6 days after surgery, pentane production was significantly elevated over pre-surgery levels in rats fed the antioxidant-deficient or vitamin E-supplemented diets, but not in rats fed the Santoquin-supplemented diet. Six days after surgery, there were fewer thiobarbituric acid reactants in regenerating liver of Santoquin-fed rats than of vitamin-E fed rats or antioxidant-deficient rats. There was no increase in the 6-day level of thiobarbituric acid reactants over the 3-day level in livers of rats fed Santoquin, while there was an increase in livers of the antioxidant-deficient and vitamin E-supplemented rats. Liver sulfhydryl levels were higher at 3 and 6 days post surgery in the Santoquin-fed rats than in the antioxidant-deficient or vitamin E-supplemented rats. Plasma gamma-glutamyl-transpeptidase activity was not different among the groups of rats. Between the third and sixth day following surgery, liver regeneration was significantly stimulated in Santoquin-fed, but not vitamin E-fed rats. After 11 days, a stimulatory, but not statistically significant, effect of vitamin E was found. Although DNA content of liver was higher at 6 days than at 3 days post surgery, it was not different among the dietary groups, indicating that cell proliferation rather than hypertrophy had occurred. Partial hepatectomy could have altered the ability of the liver to metabolize pentane, thus explaining part of the increased production of pentane. However, the results obtained support the interpretation that elevated levels of dietary antioxidants can be beneficial in terms of reduced lipid peroxidation and increased rates of liver regeneration following liver surgery.  相似文献

Forty-five mutant male ODs rats, unable to synthesize ascorbic acid, were fed nine diets containing 5, 50 or 250 mg of vitamin E/kg diet and 150,300 or 900 mg of vitamin C/kg diet for 21 days. The concentrations of vitamins C and E increased in liver and plasma in relation to the level of these vitamins in the diet. Vitamin C dietary supplementation increased the plasma vitamin E content at low levels of vitamin E intake, supporting the concept of an in vivo synergism between both antioxidant vitamins. Vitamin C, at the dietary levels studied, did not affect the lipid peroxidation. Vitamin E decreased liver and plasma endogenous levels of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and liver sensitivity to non-enzymatic lipid peroxidation. This was confirmed by a highly specific assay of lipid hydroperoxides using high performance liquid chromatography with chemiluminescence detection. The hepatic concentration of both phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine hydroperoxides decreased as the vitamin E content of the diet increased. The results show for the first time the capacity of vitamin E to protect against peroxidation of major phospho-lipids in vivo under basal unstressed conditions.  相似文献

Oxidative stress is implicated in the pathophysiology of a number of chronic diseases including atherosclerosis, diabetes, cataracts and accelerated aging. The aim of this study was to elucidate the protective role of vitamin E supplementation when oxidative stress is induced by CCl4 administration, using the rat as a model. Rats were fed diets for four weeks either with or without dl-alpha-tocopherol acetate supplementation. Half of the rats (n = 9) from each of the diet groups were then challenged with CCl4 at the completion of the four week diet period. Plasma levels of 8-iso-PGF(2alpha), antioxidant micronutrients and antioxidant enzyme activities were measured to examine changes in oxidative stress subsequent to the supplementation of dl-alpha-tocopherol in the diet. Plasma alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) concentrations were higher for the groups supplemented with dl-alpha-tocopherol acetate, however the supplemented diet group that was subsequently challenged with CCl4 had significantly lower (p <0.001) plasma alpha-tocopherol concentration than the dl-alpha-tocopherol acetate diet group that was not challenged with CCl4. Total plasma 8-iso-PGF(2alpha) concentration was elevated in diet groups challenged with CCl4, however, the concentration was significantly lower (p <0.001) when the diet was supplemented with dl-alpha-tocopherol acetate. The antioxidant enzymes were not influenced by either dietary alpha-tocopherol manipulation or by the inducement of oxidative stress with CCl4. Plasma concentrations of trans-retinol (vitamin A) were reduced by CCl4 administration in both the dl-alpha-tocopherol acetate supplemented and unsupplemented diet groups. The results of this study indicate that dl-alpha-tocopherol acetate supplementation was protective of lipid peroxidation when oxidative stress is induced by a pro-oxidant challenge such as CCl4.  相似文献

This study was designed to determine the effect of dietary vitamin E on growth, some hematological and immunological parameters and muscle proximate analysis of beluga Huso huso. Experimental fish were fed practical diets supplemented with 0, 25, 50, 100, 200 and 400 mg Dl-all-rac-α-tocopherol acetate kg diet(-1) for 8 weeks. 360 fish (mean initial weight 49.7 ± 0.1 g) were distributed into eighteen 785 L circular concrete tanks and each diet was fed to triplicate groups of fish. At the end of experiment (8 weeks), growth parameters such as final weight (FW), weight gain (WG), total length (TL), feed conversion ratio (FCR), specific growth rate (SGR), protein efficiency ratio (PER), condition factor (CF), hepatosomatic index (HSI), muscle composition, and some physiological indicators, including hematological and immunological parameters, such as hematocrit (Hct), total leukocyte count (WBC), lymphocyte, neutrophil, eosinophil and monocyte, cortisol, glucose, erythrocyte fragility, lysozyme and complement activity were determined. FW, WG, SGR, PER and CF in fish fed unsupplemented vitamin E were significantly lower than those fish fed the other five diets. However FW and PER in fish fed control diet had not significant differences with fish fed at 400 mg kg(-1). FCR were significantly higher in fish fed control diet than other groups. TL and survival rate had no significant differences among fish groups. HSI in fish fed 0 and 25 mg vitamin E kg diet(-1) were significantly lower than the other treatments. Muscle composition analysis showed no significant differences among the treatments. Erythrocyte fragility, Hct, WBC, lymphocyte, neutrophil, eosinophil and monocyte, lysozyme and complement activities were not significant. Also cortisol and glucose concentrations had not significant differences between treatments. Results indicated that vitamin E had no significantly effect on muscle proximate analysis, hematological and immunological parameters of sub-yearling beluga but has a direct effect on growth performance of beluga sturgeon and this vitamin is an essential nutrient required for normal growth in this species.  相似文献

The effect of dietary supplementation with oregano essential oil on the performance of rabbits, and the susceptibility of the produced raw and thermally treated muscle tissue to lipid oxidation during refrigerated storage, were investigated. A total of 96 weaned rabbits were separated into four equal groups with three subgroups each. One group was given the basal diet and served as control, two groups were administered diets supplemented with oregano essential oil at levels of 100 and 200 mg/kg diet, whereas the remaining group was given a diet supplemented with alpha-tocopheryl acetate at 200 mg/kg. During the 42-day experimental period, body weight and feed intake were recorded weekly and the feed conversion ratio was calculated. Feeding the experimental diets to rabbits, performance parameters were not affected. Therefore, dietary oregano essential oil exerted no growth-promoting effect on rabbits. With increased supplementation of oregano essential oil, malondialdehyde values decreased in both raw and thermally treated muscles during refrigerated storage. This finding suggests that dietary oregano essential oil exerted a significant antioxidant effect. Dietary supplementation of oregano essential oil at the level of 200 mg/kg was more effective in delaying lipid oxidation compared with the level of 100 mg/kg, but inferior to dietary supplementation of 200 mg alpha-tocopheryl acetate per kg. This study indirectly provides evidence that antioxidant compounds occurring in oregano essential oil were absorbed by the rabbit and increased the antioxidative capacity of tissues.  相似文献
