Since the 1970s the area under sugarcane in Brazil has increased from 2 million to over 5 million ha (M ha), and it is expected to pass the 7 M ha mark in 2007. More than half of the cane is harvested to produce bioethanol as a fuel for light vehicles. The distilleries produce approximately 13 L of distillery waste (vinasse) for each litre of ethanol produced. In the 1980s there was considerable concern over the long-term effects of the disposal of this material (containing about 1% carbon and high in K) on cane yields if it was applied to the field. At the same time there was a growing movement to abandon the practice of pre-harvest burning and some research was showing that some Brazilian varieties of sugar cane were able to obtain significant contributions of N from plant-associated biological nitrogen fixation (BNF). For these reasons an experiment was installed on a cane plantation in the state of Pernambuco, NE Brazil to investigate the long-term effects of vinasse and N fertiliser additions and the practice of pre-harvest burning on crop and sugar yield, soil fertility parameters, N balance and soil C stocks. The results showed that over a 16-year period, trash conservation (abandonment of burning) increased cane yields by 25% from a mean of 46 to 58 Mg ha−1. Vinasse applications (80 m3 ha−1 crop−1) increased mean cane and sugar yield by 12 to 13% and the application of 80 kg N ha−1 as urea increased cane yields by 9%, but total sugar yield by less than 6% (from 7.0 to 7.4 Mg ha−1 crop−1). The total N balance for the soil/plant system when only the surface 20 cm of the soil was considered was positive in plots where no N fertiliser was added. However, the data indicated that during the 16 years of the study considerable quantities of soil organic matter were accumulated below 20 cm depth such that the N balance considering the soil to 60 cm depth was strongly positive, except where N fertiliser was added. The data indicated that there were considerable BNF inputs to the system, which was consistent with its low response to N fertiliser and low N fertiliser-use-efficiency. There were no significant effects of vinasse or urea addition, or trash conservation on soil C stocks, although the higher yields proportioned by trash conservation had potentially significant benefits for increased mitigation of CO2 emissions where the main use of the cane was for bioethanol production.  相似文献

Studies were conducted on eight sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hydrid) cultivars during the 1982–83 (plant crop) and 1983–84 (ratoon crop) growing seasons to determine the effects of glyphosine (Polaris) (N,N-bis (phosphonomethyl) glycine) and glyphosate (Polado) (sodium-N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine) on stalk sucrose content and yield. Difference due to crops (plant vs. ratoon) for sugarcane quality, kilograms of sugar per ton of cane (S/T), sugarcane yield, tons of cane per hectare (TCH), and sugar yield, tons of sugar per hectare (TSH) were significant. Significant differences were found in quality for the ratoon crop and cane and sugar yield in both crops due to ripener treatment. Cultivars in both crops differed significantly in quality and yield. Harvest dates were significantly different for all plant characteristics. Interactions of cultivar by treatment for the plant crop, harvest date by treatment for the ratoon crop, and cultivar by harvest date for both crops for cane quality also were significant. Time from ripener application to achievement of maximum sugar concentration also depended on cultivar. This is important in determining the economic benefits of a ripener treatment. Climatic conditions may also affect the benefits of such applications.  相似文献

The adoption of mechanical harvesting of green cane gives rise to concerns as to whether systems developed under burnt cane harvesting are applicable to a green cane harvesting system. In particular, tillage, which is an integral part of the burnt cane system, may no longer be necessary, and the nitrogen fertilizer rates required may need to be replaced due to the large amounts of organic matter being returned to the soil after green cane harvesting. Mechanical harvesting is relatively new in Brazil and little is known about its effect on other sugarcane production strategies. This work aimed to evaluate sugarcane performance under not only different harvesting and cultivation systems, but also different nitrogen fertilizer rates over a 3-year period. The experimental design was a split plot with harvesting systems (burnt vs. green) as main plots, cultivation (interrow vs. no cultivation) as sub plots, and nitrogen rates as sub-sub plots. The harvesting systems produced similar sugarcane yields throughout the experimental period, which demonstrates that the harvest systems do not influence sugarcane yield. Mechanical tillage practices in interrow after harvesting had no impact on stalk yield or sugar quality, indicating no necessity for this operation in the following crop. Ratoon nitrogen fertilization promoted an increase of stalk and sugar yield, with highest yields obtained at the rate of 130 kg ha?1 N. However, there was no interaction between harvesting system and nitrogen rate.  相似文献

Ethanol produced from lignocellulosic biomass is a renewable alternative to diminishing petroleum based liquid fuels. The release of many new sugarcane varieties by the United States Department of Agriculture to be used as energy crops is a promising feedstock alternative. Energy cane produces large amounts of biomass that can be easily transported, and production does not compete with food supply and prices because energy cane can be grown on marginal land instead of land for food crops. The purpose of this study was to evaluate energy cane for lignocellulosic ethanol production. Energy cane variety L 79-1002 was pretreated with weak sulfuric acid to remove lignin. In this study, 1.4 M sulfuric acid pretreated type II energy cane had a higher ethanol yield after fermentation by Klebsiella oxytoca without enzymatic saccharification than 0.8 M and 1.6 M sulfuric acid pretreated type II energy cane. Pretreated biomass was inoculated with K. oxytoca for cellulose fermentation and Pichia stipitis for hemicellulose fermentation under simultaneous saccahrification and fermentation (SSF) and separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF) conditions. For enzymatic saccharification of cellulose, the cellulase and ??-glucanase cocktail significantly increased ethanol production compared to the ethanol production of fermented acid pretreated energy cane without enzymatic saccharification. The results revealed that energy cane variety L 79-1002 produced maximum cellulosic ethanol under SHF (6995 mg/L) and produced 3624 mg/L ethanol from fermentation of hemicellulosic sugars.  相似文献

The advantages of producing biofuels to replace fossil energy sources are derived from the fact that the energy accumulated in the biomass is captured directly from photosynthesis and is thus renewable, and that the cycle of carbon dioxide fixation by the crop, followed by burning of the fuel makes no overall contribution to atmospheric CO2 or, consequently, to global warming. However, these advantages are negated if large quantities of fossil fuels need to be used to grow or process the biofuel crop. In this regard, the Brazilian bioethanol program, based on the fermentation/distillation of sugar cane juice, is particularly favorable, not only because the crop is principally hand harvested, but also because of the low nitrogen fertilizer use on sugar cane in Brazil. Recent 15N and N balance studies have shown that in some Brazilian cane varieties, high yields are possible without N fertilization because the plants are able to obtain large contributions of nitrogen from plant-associated biological N2 fixation (BNF). The N2-fixing acid-tolerant bacterium Acetobacter diazotrophicus was first found to occur within roots, stems, and leaves of sugar cane. Subsequently, two species of Herbaspirillum also have been found to occur within the interior of all sugar cane tissues. The discovery of these, and other N2-fixing bacteria that survive poorly in soil but thrive within plant tissue (endophytic bacteria), may account for the high BNF contributions observed in sugar cane. Further study of this system should allow the gradual elimination of N fertilizer use on sugar cane, at least in Brazil, and opens up the possibility of the extension of this efficient N2-fixing system to cereal and other crops with consequent immense potential benefits to tropical agriculture.  相似文献

There has been rapid economic development in China in recent decades, and demand for energy has consequently been increasing rapidly. Development and utilisation of clean and renewable energy has been promoted by the Chinese government to help sustain long-term and stable development. Sugarcane is being increasingly used in several countries as feedstock for renewable energy products, and is a major and expanding crop in southern China. In this paper, we discuss the potential of sugarcane as a feedstock for bioenergy production in China. It includes a review of (1) the existing sugarcane industry in China and key bio-physical factors affecting the extent to which sugarcane-based industries could supply feedstock for renewable energy production in China, (2) the economic and policy factors which are likely to affect production of bioenergy from sugarcane in China, and (3) recommendations on actions and policies that may assist with appropriate development of bioenergy production from sugarcane in China. Existing and expected future economic conditions are unlikely to favour production of biofuel from the sugar component in cane. However, the fibre component of cane remains an under-utilised resource component. A conclusion is made that sugarcane fibre has potential to contribute towards renewable electricity production in China. However, at present, favourable incentives do not exist to encourage this production. It is suggested that policies to facilitate cost-effective production of renewable electricity by sugar mills, consistent with national objectives regarding production of renewable energy, be considered by governments. Priorities for future research are in improving biomass yields per unit area of land and technologies for low-cost conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into biofuel.  相似文献

Sugarcane is one of the major agricultural crops cultivated in tropical climate regions of the world. Each tonne of raw cane production is associated with the generation of 130 kg dry weight of bagasse after juice extraction and 250 kg dry weight of cane leaf residue postharvest. The annual world production of sugarcane is ~1.6 billion tones, generating 279 MMT tones of biomass residues (bagasse and cane leaf matter) that would be available for cellulosic ethanol production. Here, we investigated the production of cellulosic ethanol from sugar cane bagasse and sugar cane leaf residue using an alkaline pretreatment: ammonia fiber expansion (AFEX). The AFEX pretreatment improved the accessibility of cellulose and hemicelluloses to enzymes during hydrolysis by breaking down the ester linkages and other lignin carbohydrate complex (LCC) bonds and the sugar produced by this process is found to be highly fermentable. The maximum glucan conversion of AFEX pretreated bagasse and cane leaf residue by cellulases was ~85%. Supplementation with hemicellulases during enzymatic hydrolysis improved the xylan conversion up to 95–98%. Xylanase supplementation also contributed to a marginal improvement in the glucan conversion. AFEX‐treated cane leaf residue was found to have a greater enzymatic digestibility compared to AFEX‐treated bagasse. Co‐fermentation of glucose and xylose, produced from high solid loading (6% glucan) hydrolysis of AFEX‐treated bagasse and cane leaf residue, using the recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae (424A LNH‐ST) produced 34–36 g/L of ethanol with 92% theoretical yield. These results demonstrate that AFEX pretreatment is a viable process for conversion of bagasse and cane leaf residue into cellulosic ethanol. Biotechnol. The sugar industry needs to find efficient methods in clarifying the raw sugarcane juice in order to improve the quality of the clarified juice and to reduce or eliminate the usage of chemicals (lime). Conventional clarifiers use heavy equipment which lead to high operating costs and associated environmental problems. In sugar mills, ensuring the production of juice of consistently high clarity and low colour through the clarification process is a challenging task. The variations in the incoming juice characteristics due to differences in cane variety, soil and growing conditions, weather patterns and season make this task even more challenging. Membrane filtration promises superior quality juice with better clarity, much lower viscosity and noticeable colour removal. Ultrafiltration of clarified sugarcane juice can be done through spiral wound or flat sheet filtration systems using polymeric membranes or tubular filtration systems using ceramic membranes. This review evaluates the applications of membrane technology in sugar industry all over the world and the need for it in the Australian sugar industry. This is an important first step to identify the appropriate types and applications of membranes.  相似文献

The sugarcane transport system is very complex and uses a daily schedule, consisting of a set of locomotives runs, to satisfy the requirements of the mill and harvesters. The total cost of sugarcane transport operations is very high; over 35% of the total cost of sugarcane production in Australia is incurred in cane transport. Producing efficient schedules for sugarcane transport can reduce the cost and limit the negative effects that this system can have on the raw sugar production system. In this paper, the sugarcane rail operations are formulated as a blocking job shop scheduling problem. A mixed integer programming approach is used to formulate the shop job scheduling problem. Mixed integer programming and constraint programming search techniques are integrated for solving the problem. A case study is solved to test the approach.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) supply can limit the yields of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] in highly productive environments. To explore the physiological mechanisms underlying this limitation, seasonal changes in N dynamics, aboveground dry matter (ADM) accumulation, leaf area index (LAI) and fraction of absorbed radiation (fAPAR) were compared in crops relying only on biological N2 fixation and available soil N (zero-N treatment) versus crops receiving N fertilizer (full-N treatment). Experiments were conducted in seven high-yield environments without water limitation, where crops received optimal management. In the zero-N treatment, biological N2 fixation was not sufficient to meet the N demand of the growing crop from early in the season up to beginning of seed filling. As a result, crop LAI, growth, N accumulation, radiation-use efficiency and fAPAR were consistently higher in the full-N than in the zero-N treatment, leading to improved seed set and yield. Similarly, plants in the full-N treatment had heavier seeds with higher N concentration because of greater N mobilization from vegetative organs to seeds. Future yield gains in high-yield soybean production systems will require an increase in biological N2 fixation, greater supply of N from soil or fertilizer, or alleviation of the trade-off between these two sources of N in order to meet the plant demand.  相似文献

In certain sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrids) production regions of the world, including South Africa, frost frequently occurs. Great demand exists for frost tolerant sugarcane varieties as production in these areas could become more profitable. Two Louisiana (USA) varieties, known to yield high sugar even when immature (LCP 85-384 and HOCP 96-540), and two South African varieties (N21 and N36) were evaluated in a field trial for frost tolerance. O–J–I–P chlorophyll a fluorescence transients were recorded in youngest fully-expanded leaves of these varieties on several occasions before and following exposure to frost. Analysis of these transients revealed that varieties N36 and LCP 85-384 were capable of cold acclimation following the first frost, while N21 and HOCP 96-540 lacked similar capability. Exposure to further frosts altered the fluorescence transients in a variety-specific fashion, with recovery in N36 and LCP 85-384 towards baseline kinetics, but with further deterioration in N21 and HOCP 96-540. Between the first frost and harvest, estimated recoverable crystal (ERC) content values in cane stalks of N36 and LCP 85-384 increased by 26 and 20 % respectively, while in N21 and HOCP 96-540 ERC content values only increased by 8 and 11 % respectively. Consequently, N36 and LCP 85-384 ultimately achieved the highest ERC yields (tons/hectare). The ability to maintain high ERC accumulation capacity for longer following frost could be an important factor determining sugarcane yield performance in frost-prone areas. In addition, O–J–I–P fluorescence rise kinetics show promise as a rapid screening tool for assessment of cold acclimation potential in sugarcane.  相似文献

The burgeoning cellulosic ethanol industry necessitates advancements in enzymatic saccharification, effective pretreatments for lignin removal, and the cultivation of crops more amenable to saccharification. Studies have demonstrated that natural inhibitors of lignin biosynthesis can enhance the saccharification of lignocellulose, even in tissues generated several months post-treatment. In this study, we applied daidzin (a competitive inhibitor of coniferaldehyde dehydrogenase), piperonylic acid (a quasi-irreversible inhibitor of cinnamate 4-hydroxylase), and methylenedioxy cinnamic acid (a competitive inhibitor of 4-coenzyme A ligase) to 60-day-old crops of two conventional Brazilian sugarcane cultivars and two energy cane clones, bred specifically for enhanced biomass production. The resultant biomasses were evaluated for lignin content and enzymatic saccharification efficiency without additional lignin-removal pretreatments. The treatments amplified the production of fermentable sugars in both the sugarcane cultivars and energy cane clones. The most successful results softened the most recalcitrant lignocellulose to the level of the least recalcitrant of the biomasses tested. Interestingly, the softest material became even more susceptible to saccharification.  相似文献

Nitrate paradigm does not hold up for sugarcane   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Modern agriculture is based on the notion that nitrate is the main source of nitrogen (N) for crops, but nitrate is also the most mobile form of N and easily lost from soil. Efficient acquisition of nitrate by crops is therefore a prerequisite for avoiding off-site N pollution. Sugarcane is considered the most suitable tropical crop for biofuel production, but surprisingly high N fertilizer applications in main producer countries raise doubt about the sustainability of production and are at odds with a carbon-based crop. Examining reasons for the inefficient use of N fertilizer, we hypothesized that sugarcane resembles other giant tropical grasses which inhibit the production of nitrate in soil and differ from related grain crops with a confirmed ability to use nitrate. The results of our study support the hypothesis that N-replete sugarcane and ancestral species in the Andropogoneae supertribe strongly prefer ammonium over nitrate. Sugarcane differs from grain crops, sorghum and maize, which acquired both N sources equally well, while giant grass, Erianthus, displayed an intermediate ability to use nitrate. We conclude that discrimination against nitrate and a low capacity to store nitrate in shoots prevents commercial sugarcane varieties from taking advantage of the high nitrate concentrations in fertilized soils in the first three months of the growing season, leaving nitrate vulnerable to loss. Our study addresses a major caveat of sugarcane production and affords a strong basis for improvement through breeding cultivars with enhanced capacity to use nitrate as well as through agronomic measures that reduce nitrification in soil.  相似文献

We compared symbiotic N2 fixation by winter forage legumes (clovers, medics and vetches) using the 15N natural abundance technique in three experiments. Vetches (Vicia spp.) were the most productive legumes, and woollypod vetch fixed (shoot+root) up to 265 kg N ha–1 (mean 227 kg N ha–1) during a 4–5 months period over winter and early spring. Balansa and Berseem clovers, and Gama medic were highly productive in the first experiment, but fixed significantly less N than woollypod vetch in the second experiment. A 6-year study (1997–2003) compared cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) systems with and without vetch, or with faba beans (Vicia faba L.) to assess the effects of these crops on cotton production. Woollypod vetch was grown either between annual cotton crops, or between wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) and cotton crops. Vetch added 230 kg N ha–1 (174 kg fixed N ha–1) to the soil when incorporated as a green manure. Faba bean shoot residues and nodulated roots contributed 108 kg fixed N ha–1 to the soil, following the removal of 80 kg N ha–1 in the harvested seed (meaned over three crops). Lablab (Lablab purpureus L. – summer-growing and irrigated) added 277 kg N ha–1 (244 kg fixed N ha–1) before incorporation as a green manure in the first year of the experiment. The economic optimum N fertiliser rate for each cropping system was determined every second year when all systems were sown to cotton. Cotton following cotton required 105 kg fertiliser N ha–1, but only 40 kg N ha–1 when vetch was grown between each cotton crop. Cotton following wheat required 83 kg fertiliser N ha–1 but no N fertiliser was needed when vetch was grown after wheat (the highest yielding system). Cotton following faba beans also required no N fertiliser. The vetch-based systems became more N fertile over the course of the experiment and produced greater lint yields than the comparative non-legume systems, and required less N fertiliser. While no cash flow was derived from growing vetch, economic benefits accrued from enhanced cotton yields, reduced N fertiliser requirements and improved soil fertility. These findings help explain the rotational benefits of vetches observed in other regions of the world.  相似文献

In the short term, the production of bioethanol as a liquid transport fuel is almost entirely dependent on starch and sugars from existing food crops. The sustainability of this industry would be enhanced by increases in the yield of starch/sugar per hectare without further inputs into the crops concerned. Efforts to achieve increased yields of starch over the last three decades, in particular via manipulation of the enzyme ADPglucose pyrophosphorylase, have met with limited success. Other approaches have included manipulation of carbon partitioning within storage organs in favour of starch synthesis, and attempts to manipulate source–sink relationships. Some of the most promising results so far have come from manipulations that increase the availability of ATP for starch synthesis. Future options for achieving increased starch contents could include manipulation of starch degradation in organs in which starch turnover is occurring, and introduction of starch synthesis into the cytosol. Sucrose accumulation is much less well understood than starch synthesis, but recent results from research on sugar cane suggest that total sugar content can be greatly increased by conversion of sucrose into a non-metabolizable isomer. A better understanding of carbohydrate storage and turnover in relation to carbon assimilation and plant growth is required, both for improvement of starch and sugar crops and for attempts to increase biomass production in second-generation biofuel crops.  相似文献

In Brazil, bioethanol is produced by sucrose fermentation from sugarcane by Saccharomyces cerevisiae in a fed-batch process that uses high density of yeast cells (15–25 % of wet weight/v) and high sugar concentration (18–22 % of total sugars). Several research efforts have been employed to improve the efficiency of this process through the isolation of yeasts better adapted to the Brazilian fermentation conditions. Two important wild strains named CAT-1 and PE-2 were isolated during the fermentation process and were responsible for almost 60 % of the total ethanol production in Brazil. However, in the last decade the fermentative substrate composition was much modified, since new sugar cane crops were developed, the use of molasses instead of sugar cane juice increase and with the prohibition of burning of sugarcane prior harvest. As consequence, these previously isolated strains are being replaced by new wild yeasts in most of ethanol plants. In this new scenario the isolation of novel better adapted yeasts with improved fermentative characteristics is still a big challenge. Here, we discuss the main aspects of Brazilian ethanol production and the efforts for the selection, characterization and genetic modifications of new strains with important phenotypic traits such as thermotolerance.  相似文献

Energy cane varieties are high-fiber sugarcane clones which represent a promising feedstock in the production of alternative biofuels and biobased products. This study explored the crop establishment and whole farm production costs of growing energy cane as a biofuel feedstock in the southeastern USA. More specifically, total production costs on a feedstock dry matter biomass basis were estimated for five perennial energy cane varieties over alternative crop cycle lengths. Variable production costs for energy cane production were estimated to be in the $63 to $76 Mg?1 range of biomass dry matter for crop cycles through harvest of fourth through sixth stubble crops. Total production costs, including charges for fixed equipment costs, general farm overhead, and land rent, were estimated to range between $105 and $127 Mg?1 of feedstock biomass dry matter material.  相似文献

Chemically inducible gene switches can provide precise control over gene expression, enabling more specific analyses of gene function and expanding the plant biotechnology toolkit beyond traditional constitutive expression systems. The alc gene expression system is one of the most promising chemically inducible gene switches in plants because of its potential in both fundamental research and commercial biotechnology applications. However, there are no published reports demonstrating that this versatile gene switch is functional in transgenic monocotyledonous plants, which include some of the most important agricultural crops. We found that the original alc gene switch was ineffective in the monocotyledonous plant sugar cane, and describe a modified alc system that is functional in this globally significant crop. A promoter consisting of tandem copies of the ethanol receptor inverted repeat binding site, in combination with a minimal promoter sequence, was sufficient to give enhanced sensitivity and significantly higher levels of ethanol inducible gene expression. A longer CaMV 35S minimal promoter than was used in the original alc gene switch also substantially improved ethanol inducibility. Treating the roots with ethanol effectively induced the modified alc system in sugar cane leaves and stem, while an aerial spray was relatively ineffective. The extension of this chemically inducible gene expression system to sugar cane opens the door to new opportunities for basic research and crop biotechnology.  相似文献
