Although predator avoidance has been proposed as one possible factor influencing the distribution of fish among substrate types, no study has addressed this question directly. Groups of juvenile Atlantic cod were offered a choice between pairs of the following three substrates: sand, gravel-pebble and cobble. Their distribution on these substrates was compared prior to, during and following exposure to a predator (i.e. a larger conspecific). With no apparent risk of predation, juvenile cod preferred sand or gravel-pebble. When cobble was present, juveniles hid in the interstitial spaces of this substrate in the presence of a predator. With no cobble present, juveniles showed no preference between sand and gravel-pebble, and did not seek refuge from predation in association with these substrates. Following exposure to a predator (i.e. 2.5 h later) larger juvenile cod again showed a preference for the finer-grained substrates, but smaller individuals continued to associated with the cobble. The presence of cobble resulted in fewer juveniles being captured and a significant increase in the latency until the first juvenile was captured by the predator. Results are discussed with respect to the effects of predation on the distribution and survival of fishes among substrate types.  相似文献

Background

Ganglionated plexuses (GP) are terminal parts of cardiac autonomous nervous system (ANS). Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for atrial fibrillation (AF) possibly affects GP. Changes in heart rate variability (HRV) after RFA can reflect ANS modulation.

Methods

Epicardial RFA of GP on the left atrium (LA) was performed under the general anesthesia in 15 mature Romanov sheep. HRV was used to assess the alterations in autonomic regulation of the heart. A 24???hour ECG monitoring was performed before the ablation, 2 days after it and at each of the 12 following months. Ablation sites were evaluated histologically.

Results

There was an instant change in HRV parameters after the ablation. A standard deviation of all intervals between normal QRS (SDNN), a square root of the mean of the squared differences between successive normal QRS intervals (RMSSD) along with HRV triangular index (TI), low frequency (LF) power and high frequency (HF) power decreased, while LF/HF ratio increased. Both the SDNN, LF power and the HF power changes persisted throughout the 12???month follow???up. Significant decrease in RMSSD persisted only for 3 months, HRV TI for 6 months and increase in LF/HF ratio for 7 months of the follow???up. Afterwards these three parameters were not different from the preprocedural values.

Conclusions

Epicardial RFA of GP’s on the ovine left atrium has lasting effect on the main HRV parameters (SDNN, HF power and LF power). The normalization of RMSSD, HRV TI and LF/HF suggests that HRV after epicardial RFA of GPs on the left atrium might restore over time.

The behavioural response of juvenile bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) to predation risk when selecting between patches of artificial vegetation differing in food and stem density was investigated. Bluegill foraging activity was significantly affected by all three factors. Regardless of patch stem density or risk of predation bluegills preferred patches with the highest prey number. During each trial bluegill foraging activity was clearly divided into a between- and within-patch component. In the presence of a predator bluegills reduced their between-patch foraging activity by an equivalent amount regardless of patch stem density or food level, apparently showing a risk-adjusting behavioural response to predation risk. Within patches, however, foraging activity was affected by both food level and patch stem density. When foraging in a patch offering a refuge from predation, the presence of a predator had no effect on bluegill foraging activity within this patch. However, if foraging in a patch with only limited refuge potential, bluegill foraging activity was reduced significantly in the presence of a predator. Further, this reduction was significantly greater if the patch contained a low versus a high food level, indicating a risk-balancing response to predation with respect to within-patch foraging activity. Both these responses differ from the risk-avoidance response to predation demonstrated by juvenile bluegills when selecting among habitats. Therefore, our results demonstrate the flexibility of juvenile bluegill foraging behaviour.  相似文献

Synopsis Juvenile bluegill sunfish,Lepomis macrochira, are restricted to vegetated habitats by predators. Variation in plant stem density has a significant effect on bluegill foraging success. Given the mosaic nature of this habitat, plant stem density may provide a cue for selecting among patches in which to forage. In this study, juvenile bluegills were offered patches of artificial vegetation differing only in plant stem density as potential foraging sites. Three densities, 100, 250, and 500 stems m–2 were tested. Fish were presented with a choice between patches (100:250, 250:500, or 100:500). Bluegill foraging rate in, and the number of fish choosing each patch was recorded. Juvenile bluegills showed a preference for those patches which maximized their foraging rate.  相似文献

We tested the null hypothesis that neither roughness nor color of artificial substrata (tiles) affects abundance of stream invertebrates colonizing these substrata. The studies were carried out in a third-order aspen-parkland stream and first- and second-order foothills streams of Alberta, Canada. Dark-colored tiles were slightly more attractive to some colonizing invertebrates than light-colored tiles, but results were not conclusive. Generally, more individuals and more taxa were found on the rough tiles than on the smooth tiles. And several taxa were found in significantly (P 0.05) larger numbers on the rough tiles. Chironomids, especially, had a strong preference for the rough tiles. A major exception was heptageniid (Ephemeroptera) nymphs, which were consistently found in larger numbers on the smooth tiles.  相似文献

Summary Numerous studies have demonstrated a negative relationship between increasing habitat complexity and predator foraging success. Results from many of these studies suggest a non-linear relationship, and it has been hypothesised that some threshold level of complexity is required before foraging success is reduced significantly. We examined this hypothesis using largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) foraging on juvenile bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) in various densities of artificial vegetation. Largemouth foraging success differed significantly among the densities of vegetation tested. Regression analysis revealed a non-linear relationship between increasing plant stem density and predator foraging success. Logistic analysis demonstrated a significant fit of our data to a logistic model, from which was calculated the threshold level of plant stem desity necessary to reduce predator foraging success. Studies with various prey species have shown selection by prey for more complex habitats as a refuge from predation. In this stydy, we also examined the effects of increasing habitat complexity (i.e. plant stem density) on choice of habitat by juvenile bluegills while avoiding predation. Plant stem density significantly effected choice of habitat as a refuge. The relationship between increasing habitat complexity and prey choice of habitat was found to be positive and non-linear. As with predator foraging success, logistic analysis demonstrated a significant fit of our data to a logistic model. Using this model we calculated the threshold level of habitat complexity required before prey select a habitat as a refuge. This density of vegetation proved to be considerably higher than that necessary to significantly reduce predator foraging success, indicating that bluegill select habitats safe from predation.Implications of these results and various factors which may affect the relationships described are discussed.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of body size and food ration on over-winter survival of age-0 Atlantic cod. Cod were divided into two groups based on standard length (large=76.95±1.10 mm SL; small=57.65±1.02 mm SL; mean±1 SE) and wet weight (large=4.02± 0.21 g; small=1.52±0.09 g). Replicate tanks (n=2) of 10 large and 10 small cod were exposed to one of two food rations (0.25% and 1.0% body weight day-1) for the entire experiment (December to June). Tanks were examined daily for mortalities and feeding was adjusted accordingly. The experiment was run under ambient light and seawater conditions. All but large age-0 cod exposed to the low food ration grew over the course of the experiment. The specific growth rate (SGR) of small cod was significantly higher (0.2425% wet weight day-1) than that of the large fish (0.0443% wet weight day-1). Food ration had no significant influence on SGR or over-winter survival. Significantly more of the large age-0 cod survived the winter (58.5% of those originally introduced) compared to the smaller fish (14%). Our results are consistent with those from studies of several other fish species, and are discussed in relation to the ecology of age-0 cod, and their potential use in aquaculture in Newfoundland.  相似文献

Charge transport in organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices is often characterized by space‐charge limited currents (SCLC). However, this technique only probes the transport of charges residing at quasi‐equilibrium energies in the disorder‐broadened density of states (DOS). In contrast, in an operating OPV device the photogenerated carriers are typically created at higher energies in the DOS, followed by slow thermalization. Here, by ultrafast time‐resolved experiments and simulations it is shown that in disordered polymer/fullerene and polymer/polymer OPVs, the mobility of photogenerated carriers significantly exceeds that of injected carriers probed by SCLC. Time‐resolved charge transport in a polymer/polymer OPV device is measured with exceptionally high (picosecond) time resolution. The essential physics that SCLC fails to capture is that of photo­generated carrier thermalization, which boosts carrier mobility. It is predicted that only for materials with a sufficiently low energetic disorder, thermalization effects on carrier transport can be neglected. For a typical device thickness of 100 nm, the limiting energetic disorder is σ ≈71 (56) meV for maximum‐power point (short‐circuit) conditions, depending on the error one is willing to accept. As in typical OPV materials the disorder is usually larger, the results question the validity of the SCLC method to describe operating OPVs.  相似文献
