New discoveries have fuelled the ongoing discussion of panspermia, i.e. the transport of life from one planet to another within the solar system (interplanetary panspermia) or even between different planetary systems (interstellar panspermia). The main factor for the probability of interstellar panspermia is the average density of stellar systems containing habitable planets. The combination of recent results for the formation rate of Earth-like planets with our estimations of extrasolar habitable zones allows us to determine the number of habitable planets in the Milky Way over cosmological time scales. We find that there was a maximum number of habitable planets around the time of Earth's origin. If at all, interstellar panspermia was most probable at that time and may have kick-started life on our planet.  相似文献

Ecological transition zones are increasingly recognized as systems that play a critical role in controlling or modifying flows of organisms, materials, and energy across landscapes. Many concepts describing transitional areas have been proposed over the years, such as the prevalent and durable ecotone concept. Confusion among ecologists and land managers about transition zone concepts and the isolation of studies that use only one transition concept can hinder unified progress in understanding these key systems. Currently, a movement toward conceptual synthesis under the umbrella concept of ‘ecological boundary’ is underway. Here we examine the history and theoretical baggage of the ecotone, riparian zone, and several other concepts. Subsequently, we present a conceptual cluster analysis, which facilitates a better understanding of the similarities and differences between boundary and transition concepts. We emphasize the hierarchical nature of these concepts: higher-level synthetic concepts can be used in the development of theory, whereas lower-level concepts allow more specificity and the formulation of operational definitions. Finally, we look briefly at the utility and future use of boundary and transition zone concepts.  相似文献

The spatial structure of contact zones is often described as disjunct, diffuse or mosaic and presumed to be related to underlying ecological gradients. However, the ecology of contact zones, how they are structured, and if that structure is predictable based on the strength and nature of ecological gradients is unknown. Large spatial scales and the unreplicated nature of many of the best studied contact zones has made it difficult to codify broader ecological patterns. Freshwater stream fish contact zones have the advantage of being potentially replicated with well defined boundaries and predictable linear gradients (river continuum concept). We sampled four replicate topminnow (Fundulus olivaceus and F. notatus) contact zones in Gulf of Mexico drainages. In each, we quantified contact zone spatial structure and the strength of ecological gradients (habitat, physicochemical variables and fish community functional traits). All three types of contact zone structure were represented. Systems with weaker gradients had diffuse contact zones, low species richness and were numerically dominated by generalist species. Rates of hybridization were also variable among systems. There was no hybridization detected in the mosaic zone while hybrids were found at most of the co-occurrence sites in the diffuse and disjunct zones. Overall, local ecology clearly influences contact zone structure and the two species interact in fundamentally different ways in these four systems.  相似文献

通过对中国工业区,特别是纺织服装工业区"产废"情况的梳理,明确针对污染严重,经济效益不高的工业区进行改造的必要性。为实现对纺织服装工业区绿色化改造,从"无废理念"出发,重点研究纺织服装工业区绿色化改造的可实施路径。在研究方法上将纺织服装工业区作为研究整体,基于可持续发展思想,构建纺织服装工业区经济、社会、环境复合生态系统,运用层次分析法,选取对于该类工业园区具有代表性的经济、社会、环境指标进行评价,通过评价后总的分值,结合生命周期规律,将需要改造的纺织服装工业区进行初步筛选。同时,利用经济、社会、环境各子系统的分值,对具体改造模式加以判别。文章通过对纺织服装工业区不可持续性的内涵挖掘,将工业区绿色化改造模式与改造内容建立关联,可以通过产业绿色化改造和建成空间绿色化改造,来实现工业园区的升级与转型,进而实现可持续发展。最后,根据模式判别结果,针对不同模式在产业与建成空间的不同特征,提出相应的绿色化改造方法和政策建议。在结论中总结基于"无废理念"纺织服装工业区绿色化改造与可持续发展的辩证关系。此方法适用于其他类型的工业区改造模式判别,以促进工业区的可持续发展。  相似文献

本文提出了果树带的新概念,即根据果树栽培的高效优质及其自然分布情况,提出在长江以南(北纬18─32°)柑桔为主的第一果树带和长江以北(北纬32─43°)苹果为主的第二果树带之间,即北纬25─35°建立和发展以猕猴桃为主的第三果树带的新论点。同时,因海拔高度的变化以及在两带的边缘地域,表现出部分过度交互型特征。本文还进一步阐述了以猕猴桃为代表的第三果树带形成和发展的可能与条件,指出提高果树种植效益与不同果树相应气候带的关系,分析说明了中国第三果树带的形成与发展的重要意义。此外,还对第三果树带的果树组成、发展方向和途径等关键性问题进行了讨论,为中国第三果树带的形成与发展提供了理论依据。  相似文献

We discuss the evolution of the atmosphere of early Earth and of terrestrial exoplanets which may be capable of sustaining liquid water oceans and continents where life may originate. The formation age of a terrestrial planet, its mass and size, as well as the lifetime in the EUV-saturated early phase of its host star play a significant role in its atmosphere evolution. We show that planets even in orbits within the habitable zone of their host stars might not lose nebular- or catastrophically outgassed initial protoatmospheres completely and could end up as water worlds with CO2 and hydrogen- or oxygen-rich upper atmospheres. If an atmosphere of a terrestrial planet evolves to an N2-rich atmosphere too early in its lifetime, the atmosphere may be lost. We show that the initial conditions set up by the formation of a terrestrial planet and by the evolution of the host star’s EUV and plasma environment are very important factors owing to which a planet may evolve to a habitable world. Finally we present a method for studying the discussed atmosphere evolution hypotheses by future UV transit observations of terrestrial exoplanets.  相似文献

The histological investigation of the kidney of the skate Raja erinacea revealed a thin cap of dorsal bundles, which contain segments of single nephrons that are arranged separately in a countercurrent manner, and a large ventral zone, where the second proximal segments (PII) and parts of the lower nephron are located. This zonation is apparent in fresh, unfixed material and makes it possible to separate small tissue samples under a dissecting microscope. The osmolality in both zones does not differ. The dorsal bundle zone had a lower urea concentration and a higher sodium concentration than the ventral zone. The differences in the mean concentrations of the tissue samples indicate a gradient for the two substances along the bundles. Determinations of amounts of water and solutes per mg solute-free, dry tissue of the two zones, showed that the amounts of water, total osmolytes, Na and K were greater in the bundle zone than in the ventral zone, while the amount of urea was identical in the two zones. This indicates that the lower urea concentration in the bundle zone is established through an accumulation of Na and water in the interstitium. The countercurrent arrangement of very early and late segments of single renal tubules supports the concept of passive reabsorption of urea in the kidney of the marine elasmobranch.  相似文献

Magnetic activity cycles are indirect traces of magnetic fields and can provide an insight on the nature and action of stellar dynamos and stellar magnetic activity. This, in turn, can determine local space weather and activity effects on stellar habitable zones. Using photometric monitoring of low-mass stars, we study the presence and properties of their magnetic activity cycles. We introduce long-term light curves of our sample stars, and discuss the properties of the observed trends, especially at spectral types where stars are fully convective (later than M3).  相似文献

Previous reports on the ultrastructure of cartilage matrix have described fibers, amorphous ground substance and, in some instances, dense matrix granules. The fibers are presumably collagen, but the nature of the granules is unknown. The primary purpose of this study has been to investigate the ultrastructure of cartilage matrix ih chick embryos with particular emphasis on the distribution and composition of these granules. In matrix of the zone of articular cartilage, mature collagen fibers can be seen but granules are not present. In matrix of all other zones of cartilage, fibers are smaller and granules are present. When the matrix of epiphyseal cartilage is compared to that of the zone of hypertrophic cells, fibers are similar but the granules in the latter zone are larger and more numerous. The granules in both zones were digested by hyaluronidase and positive to colloidal iron staining. Chemical analyses of cartilage from these zones indicate the hexosamine and radiosulfate content of the zone of hypertrophic cells to be higher than that of the zone of epiphyseal cartilage. The increased hexosamine was shown by column chromatography to be principally sulfated mucopolysaccharide, thereby indicating a direct correlation between size and number of granules and sulfated mucopolysaccharide content in the two zones. These data and the results of the electron microscopic histochemical studies are consistent with the concept that the granules in cartilage matrix contain acidic mucopolysaccharide.  相似文献

Lipopolysaccharide antigens were demonstrated on ultrathin sections of styrene-embedded Salmonella typhimurium by direct postembedding staining with ferritin-labeled antibodies. The antigenicity, partially masked in the embedding process, could be satisfactorily recovered by treatment of ultrathin sections with nonspecific protease. As judged from the reaction site of the ferritin-labeled antibodies, the lipopolysaccharides were localized in two zones. The broader zone of densely distributed ferritin molecules was superimposed over the whole outer cellwall, and a smaller zone revealing antigenicity was found over the cell membrane, which strongly supports the concept that the latter is the site of synthesis of lipopolysaccharides. The well-defined labeled areas between these two antigenic zones may be the routes whereby the synthesized polysaccharide molecules reach the cell wall.  相似文献

Now that extrasolar planets have been found, it is timely to ask whether some of them might be suitable for life. Climatic constraints on planetary habitability indicate that a reasonably wide habitable zone exists around main sequence stars with spectral types in the early-F to mid-K range. However, it has not been demonstrated that planets orbiting such stars would be habitable when biologically-damaging energetic radiation is also considered. The large amounts of UV radiation emitted by early-type stars have been suggested to pose a problem for evolving life in their vicinity. But one might also argue that the real problem lies with late-type stars, which emit proportionally less radiation at the short wavelengths ( < 200 nm) required to split O2 and initiate ozone formation. We show here that neither of these concerns is necessarily fatal to the evolution of advanced life: Earth-like planets orbiting F and K stars may well receive less harmful UV radiation at their surfaces than does the Earth itself.  相似文献

Establishing different types of conservation zones is becoming commonplace. However, spatial prioritization methods that can accommodate multiple zones are poorly understood in theory and application. It is typically assumed that management regulations across zones have differential levels of effectiveness (“zone effectiveness”) for biodiversity protection, but the influence of zone effectiveness on achieving conservation targets has not yet been explored. Here, we consider the zone effectiveness of three zones: permanent closure, partial protection, and open, for planning for the protection of five different marine habitats in the Vatu-i-Ra Seascape, Fiji. We explore the impact of differential zone effectiveness on the location and costs of conservation priorities. We assume that permanent closure zones are fully effective at protecting all habitats, open zones do not contribute towards the conservation targets and partial protection zones lie between these two extremes. We use four different estimates for zone effectiveness and three different estimates for zone cost of the partial protection zone. To enhance the practical utility of the approach, we also explore how much of each traditional fishing ground can remain open for fishing while still achieving conservation targets. Our results show that all of the high priority areas for permanent closure zones would not be a high priority when the zone effectiveness of the partial protection zone is equal to that of permanent closure zones. When differential zone effectiveness and costs are considered, the resulting marine protected area network consequently increases in size, with more area allocated to permanent closure zones to meet conservation targets. By distributing the loss of fishing opportunity equitably among local communities, we find that 84–88% of each traditional fishing ground can be left open while still meeting conservation targets. Finally, we summarize the steps for developing marine zoning that accounts for zone effectiveness.  相似文献

Plant zonation patterns across New England salt marshes have been investigated for years, but how nutrient availability differs between zones has received little attention. We investigated how N availability, P availability, and plant N status varied across Juncus gerardii, Spartina patens, and mixed forb zones of a Northern New England high salt marsh. We also investigated relationships between several edaphic factors and community production and diversity across the high marsh. P availability, soil salinity, and soil moisture were higher in the mixed forb zone than in the two graminoid zones. NH+ 4-N availability was highest in the J. gerardii zone, but NO 3-N availability and mid season net N mineralization rates did not vary among zones. Plant tissue N concentrations were highest in the mixed forb zone and lowest in the S. patens zone, reflecting plant physiologies more so than soil N availability. Community production was highest in the J. gerardii zone and was positively correlated with N availability and negatively correlated with soil moisture. Plant species diversity was highest in the mixed forb zone and was positively correlated with P availability and soil salinity. Thus, nutrient availability, plant N status, and plant species diversity varied across zones of this high marsh. Further investigation is needed to ascertain if soil nutrient availability influences or is a result of the production and diversity differences that exist between vegetation zones of New England high salt marshes.  相似文献

The genetically inactive stage 6 oocyte nuclei ofRana temporariacontain certain nuclear bodies that label with nucleolus-specific and coiled body (CB)-specific antibodies. We designate them multicomponent bodies (MCBs) to reflect their mixed composition. Morphologically, each MCB contains five distinct zones: zone I composed of electron-dense fibrils similar to the dense fibrillar component (DFC) of the typical eukaryotic nucleoli; zone II resembled the fibrillar material of the inactive agranular nucleoli of stage 6 oocytes; zone III consisted of fine filamentous material corresponding to the fibrillar center (FC) of lower electron density seen in the typical nucleoli; and zones IV and V contained packed coiled threads typical of CBs. Of these, zone IV was seen in the interior of MCBs and contained tightly packed coiled threads (20 nm thick), while zone V occurred at the periphery and consisted of similar threads but loosely packed and electron dense. The material of both zones IV and V resembled that of CBs. To determine the composition of these zones, we extracted oocytes with a buffer that removes chromatin and most of the soluble proteins and processed them for immunogold labeling with a variety of antibodies. Anti-p80 coilin antibody predominantly labeled zone IV and, to a lesser extent, zone V. Anti-snRNP antibody also showed a similar labeling pattern. Anti-fibrillarin antibody predominantly labeled zone I and to a lesser extent zones IV and V. Anti-B23 antibody labeled all zones. These observations suggest that MCBs contain both nucleolar and CB material. We postulate that MCBs represent storage structures which provide material needed for the early stage of embryogenesis. The demonstration of MCBs further supports the close interrelationship between nucleoli and CBs.  相似文献

The present status of germinal center (GC) research is revisited using in silico simulations based on recent lymphocyte motility data in mice. The generally adopted view of several rounds of somatic hypermutations and positive selection is analyzed with special emphasis on the spatial organization of the GC reaction. We claim that the development of dark zones is not necessary for successful GC reactions to develop. We find that a recirculation of positively selected centrocytes to the dark zone is rather unlikely. Instead we propose a scenario that combines a multiple-step mutation and selection concept with a "one-way" GC in the sense of cell migration.  相似文献

Cytohistologically, the shoot apex of Botrychium multifidum is composed of three zones—a zone of surface initials in which there is usually a centrally located apical cell, a zone of subsurface initials, and a cup-shaped zone that is subdivided into a pheripheral zone and a rib meristem. The results of cytohistochemical tests for total protein, RNA, total carbohydrate, histones, and DNA localization support this concept. Thus, the cytohistological zonation of the apical meristem of the Ophioglossales is essentially identical to that of the Filicales, and furthermore, is comparable to that of the seed plants.  相似文献

Buffer zones around reserves are often suggested, but have rarely been evaluated. We examined their design for small forest reserves (5–225 ha), where buffer zones (200 m wide) would protect the reserves and reduce negative edge effects. The potential buffer zones could be partly protected, but remain as private land. Alternatively, the state may buy land outside reserves (to be included in reserves). To consider opinions of forest owners, we interviewed 33 private forest owners in potential buffer zones of reserves. The respondents were weakly positive to conservation, but disliked a state reserve on their land, or a buffer zone where 50% of the forest would be protected without compensation; however, with compensation the majority of them were neutral or positive to such a buffer zone. In a choice between buffer zone or reserve bought by the state, the great majority of the respondents chose the buffer zone (compensation paid, land still private). We found no relationships between opinions of respondents and conservation values of their forests (densities of old and dead trees), but older owners had forests of higher value. The forest in the potential buffer zones had higher conservation value than other non-protected forests in southern Sweden. Thus, buffer zones may be valuable, and we suggest they are created in cooperation with local residents where this is possible.  相似文献

We studied 10 healthy nonsmokers and 8 healthy smokers, in both the upright and supine position, to investigate whether regional differences in respiratory clearance of technetium-99m-labeled diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid 99mTc-DTPA (RC-DTPA) existed and to assess the influence of posture and smoking on the regional RC-DTPA. RC-DTPA was assessed by the lung clearance rates (%/min) of aerosolized 99mTc-DTPA (0.8 micron MMD; 2.4 GSD), using data corrected for recirculating radioactivity, in the upper (zone 1), middle (zone 2), and lower (zone 3) posterior lung fields. In nonsmokers, RC-DTPA in zone 1 was faster than in zone 2 or 3 in both the upright (P less than 0.001) and supine positions (P less than 0.0). No effect was produced by changes in posture on the regional RC-DTPA. In smokers, RC-DTPA was increased in all zones compared with the nonsmokers (P = 0.004), with a further increase in RC-DTP in zone 1 in the upright posture compared with the other regions (P less than 0.001). We conclude that in nonsmokers regional RC-DTPA is faster in zone 1 than in other zones, and this is not related to recirculation of radioactivity; posture does not modify the regional RC-DTPA of nonsmokers; smoking increases RC-DTPA in all zones and more in zone 1 in the upright posture.  相似文献

The richness pattern of native vascular plants in North America (north of Mexico) was studied at the generic level. North America was divided into thirteen geographical regions, which were latitudinally grouped into four horizontal zones (northern, north-middle, south-middle, and southern zones); and longitudinally grouped into three vertical zones (eastern, central, and western zones). The native vascular flora of North America consisted of 1904 genera in 235 families and eighty-three orders. Along the latitudinal gradient, generic richness (in terms of the number of genera) showed a striking increase with decreasing latitude. The southern zone had more than four times as many genera as did the northern zone (with a difference of 1436 genera). 93.3% of genera in the northern zone also occurred in the southern zone. Along the longitudinal gradient, the central zone had the highest generic richness and the eastern zone had the lowest, but the difference in generic richness between the two zones was only sixty-one genera. The western and eastern zones shared 60% or more of their genera. Generic richness of vascular plants in North America was highly correlated ( r =0.965) to available environmental energy (expressed by annual potential evapotranspiration).  相似文献

Central regions of explanted lens epithelia from 6-day-old chick embryos were maintained in tissue culture for 4 weeks to determine the extent to which lens fiber differentiation would progress in vitro. Cellular outgrowth from the explants created 3 distinct zones; namely, a thick central zone, a thicker annular zone and a flattened peripheral zone. Cells of the central and annular zones underwent morphological and biochemical changes which correspond to the differentiation of lens fibers in vivo. The mean cell length increased a minimum of 25-fold. The nuclei in the longer cells became pycnotic; DNA remained in the nuclei but accumulated single-strand breaks. The cytoplasm became filled with a homogeneous granular matrix. Organelle density decreased, but microtubules persisted, mostly along surface membranes; free ribosomal clusters were present. There were occasional desmosomes and infoldings of cell membranes. The proportion of ribosomal RNA synthesized decreased relative to the total RNA synthesized, especially in the central zone. Finally, the proportion of delta crystallin synthesized increased to 40–50% of the newly synthesized protein. These data suggest that the transformation of lens epithelial cells into fibers results from a programmed differentiation which can take place in tissue culture.  相似文献
