Polyphagous shot hole borer (PSHB) (Euwallacea spec.; Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) has recently invaded southern California, USA. Along with its associated fungi, the beetle causes branch dieback and tree mortality in more than 200 host tree species, including avocado (Persea americana Mill., Lauraceae) and many important native, urban landscape, and nursery stock trees. As PSHB spreads into the avocado‐growing regions of southern California, there is a pressing need for more information for effective management of the insect/fungus complex. The objective of this study was to examine avocado cultivars to see whether there were differences in susceptibility to attack and gallery development from PSHB. We conducted choice and no‐choice trials with cut branches in the laboratory, artificially infested avocado saplings with PSHB, and also surveyed attack rates for two cultivars of field‐grown avocado subject to natural attack by PSHB. Laboratory and field trials showed similar patterns for preference among avocado cultivars indicated by beetle attack rates and gallery formation. Among the common commercial cultivars, Fuerte, Gwen, and Bacon most often had lower attack rates and lower rates of gallery formation. Zutano most frequently indicated high attack rates and much gallery formation, indicating that it may be the most susceptible to PHSB of the commercial cultivars.  相似文献

  1. Following the discovery of polyphagous shot hole borer Euwallacea fornicatus (Eichhoff) in Western Australia in September 2021, we estimated the likely economic damage that will result in the coming decades and the return on investment in eradication.
  2. A bioeconomic model was used to simulate the insect's spread and economic impact based on additional urban and commercial tree management costs. Two scenarios were examined, one in which an eradication policy response was initiated, and one in which it was not.
  3. With no eradication response, results indicated that median costs would reach A$6.8 million per annum in 30 years, with 98% of these costs relating to management in urban forests.
  4. We conclude that the eradication funding currently proposed, involving an investment of A$45.0 million over 3 years, will not generate sufficient benefits to offset costs in the short-term, but may produce net benefits in the longer term.

Cuticular hydrocarbons of Cerambycidae species can function as signals for sex recognition. Little is known about the copulatory signals of the juniper bark borer Semanotus bifasciatus, a major economic threat to Platycladus orientalis Franco in China. Here, we investigated the cuticular hydrocarbons of both sexes of S. bifasciatus to determine the chemically mediated mating signals using the solid-phase microextraction (SPME) technique with carbowax/divinylbenzene fibers (CAR/DVB) and then analyzed by coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A series of aliphatic saturated straight-chain n-alkanes (n-C23 to n-C28), internally branched monomethylalkanes at carbons 3, 11, or 13, and dimethylalkanes were identified, which showed no qualitative differences in either sex and were similar in the samples with SPME fiber extraction and those with hexane extraction. The bioassay showed that 11-methylpentacosane (11-MeC25), 11-methylhexacosane (11-MeC26), and 11-methylheptacosane (11-MeC27) have sex-specific recognition functions that triggered more mating attempts at a female-specific ratio of 100:4:60 than at a male-specific ratio of 100:85:50. In addition, the female-specific ratio of 11-methylalkanes can elicit about 70% of male mating attempts within about 60 s, whereas live females elicit about 98% of male mating attempts within 25 s. The discrepancy in the initiation of mating attempts by synthetic mixtures and live females suggests that the methyl isomers 3-MeC25, 3-MeC27, and/or 11,15-diMeC27 may also be involved in the mating behavior of S. bifasciatus. These results suggest that 11-MeC25, 11-MeC26, and 11-MeC27 constitute the contact sex pheromone of S. bifasciatus, with the presence or absence of 11-MeC26 in particular playing an important role in mate recognition by males.  相似文献

Interactions between the fungal symbionts of the polyphagous shot hole borer (PSHB) Euwallacea nr. fornicatus and avocado host trees of cultivars 'Hass' and 'Ettinger' were studied, with emphasis on the three symbiotic fungi of the beetle. Fusarium euwallaceae did not spread far from the beetle galleries and remained viable in live xylem for 25 months; Graphium euwallaceae and Paracremonium pembeum disappeared from the live tissue 2 months after inoculation, but remained viable in dead xylem. The role of F. euwallaceae as a pathogen that contributes to typical wilting symptoms of PSHB-colonized avocado branches was assessed. The enhanced resistance of 'Ettinger' than of 'Hass', as manifested in its fewer beetle attacks was not reflected in the interaction of these cultivars with the symbiotic fungi. The specific pseudo-pathogenic interaction of F. euwallaceae with the xylem may be the key to understanding the different susceptibility between attacked hosts.  相似文献

The cuticular lipids of nine species of beetles (Coleoptera) belonging to different superfamilies were analysed and found to consist of aliphatic hydrocarbons: n-alkanes, 2-, 3-, and other monomethylalkanes as well as dimethylalkanes and alkenes. The hydrocarbon pattern is qualitatively constant at the family level but varies from family to family and thus may be of use in the taxonomy of the insects.  相似文献

  1. The Kuroshio shot hole borer (KSHB) Euwallacea kuroshio is an invasive ambrosia beetle pest in Southern California, where it causes Fusarium dieback in a number of different host tree species.
  2. Since its discovery in California in about 2014, the KSHB has established or been identified across a wide geographic range along the California coast, spanning north from the Mexican border to San Luis Obispo.
  3. KSHB were reared at temperatures ranging from 16 to 32 °C to determine the effect of temperature on development and emergence rates, brood size, and colonization success.
  4. The highest total emergence and number of successful colonies occurred when KSHB was reared at 28 °C. Mean days until first offspring emergence decreased as temperature increased up to 30 °C, after which emergence ceased.
  5. The thermal constant was estimated to be 318 degree-days. Using this approximation in conjunction with weather data from the California Irrigation Management Information System, we predict the annual number of generations of KSHB in several locations across its invasive range in California. Results can be used to predict the timing and number of generations in other invaded areas, as well as estimate the range of this pest.

The chemical characterization of the hydrocarbon fraction of the epicuticular lipids of the vector mosquito Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) was performed using gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-electron impact mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Seventy eight compounds were detected in purified hexane extracts and of these, 42 hydrocarbons were identified and several of the remaining compounds were partially characterized. The hydrocarbon classes present were n-alkanes, monomethylalkanes, dimethylalkanes and alkenes and the results were similar to those published for other Aedes species. Quantitative comparisons of cuticular hydrocarbon profiles were made between males and females, different age groups and between a standard laboratory strain and a recently colonized strain of A. aegypti. These results provide baseline data for further studies on the possible role of mosquito cuticular hydrocarbons in the modification of mating behaviour.  相似文献

The major components of the egg hydrocarbons were dimethylalkanes (40%) and trimethylalkanes (24%) in which the first methyl branch was on carbon 2. The major dimethylalkanes were an approximately 2:1 mixture of 2,10- and 2,6-dimethyloctacosanes in females and eggs. The major trimethylalkanes were a mixture of 2,10,16- and 2,10,18-trimethyloctacosanes. 2,x- and 2,x,y-methyl-branched alkanes with an odd-numbered carbon backbone were proposed to have an even number of carbon atoms between the first and second methyl branch points indicating that their biosynthesis started with a primer derived from leucine. 13,17,21,25-Tetramethylheptatriacontane was the only tetramethylalkane identified. Females and eggs had more hydrocarbons with a 2-methyl branch point than did the males. The eggs had the lowest amount of internally-branched dimethylalkanes but the largest amount of 2,x-dimethylalkanes in their surface hydrocarbons. Only trace amounts of n-alkanes and alkenes were detected in the surface hydrocarbons of adult males and females, larvae and eggs, of the Colorado potato beetle.  相似文献

Hydrocarbons on the puparia of flesh flies, Sarcophaga crassipalpis, were analyzed to determine whether the abundance of hydrocarbons on puparia from diapausing individuals (twice the amount extracted from puparia of nondiapausing individuals) was the consequence of an increase in deposition of select hydrocarbons or an overall increase in deposition. Hydrocarbons from the puparia of both diapausing and nondiapausing individuals are saturated and range in chain length from 25 to 33 carbons. GC-MS analyses indicate that the hydrocarbon fraction contains n-, terminally and internally branched monomethyl-, and 3,x-, 5,x- and internally branched dimethylalkanes. The diapausing and nondiapausing empty puparia contained 39.4 and 42.9% n-alkanes, 46.5 and 44.7% monomethylalkanes, and 9.5 and 8.5% dimethylalkanes, respectively. No major differences in the percent composition of the different hydrocarbons were noted between the two groups. This suggests that the amount of hydrocarbon, rather than the composition, contributes to the lower transpiration rates observed in diapausing pupae. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Polyphagous shot hole borer (PSHB), Euwallacea whitfordiodendrus (Schedl) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae), is an ambrosia beetle that has recently invaded southern California, USA. This beetle successfully attacks and reproduces in a multitude of tree species. As direct control methods are limited, we investigated cultural management options, and sought to determine whether irrigation affects the number of attacks host trees experienced. If irrigation plays a role, cultural control methods could be recommended to managers and growers. Three separate experiments were conducted that monitored the number of attacks on trees with different levels of irrigation. Two experiments examined PSHB attacks in established landscape trees where irrigation was either present or absent. A third experiment used young potted box elder with irrigation controlled with timed emitters. In all three experiments, the level of irrigation received by the trees did not affect the number of attacks. The results suggest that changes in irrigation practices do not affect risk from PSHB attack.  相似文献

Third instar larvae of Heliothis virescens and Helicoverpa zea could be distinguished based on the hydrocarbons of their surface lipids. Hydrocarbons were the major components of the surface lipids and a distinctive capillary gas chromatographic profile could be obtained from a hexane extract of the surface lipids of a single larva. Analysis of hexane extracts of the surface lipids by capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (CGC-MS) showed several obvious differences between the two species: (1) in their gas chromatographic profiles; (2) in the presence of a major alkene, hentriacontene, only in H. zea; (3) in H. virescens the CGC-MS peak with a KI of approximately 2860 was 2-methyloctacosane, but in H. zea it was a mixture of 4-methyloctacosane plus 9,13- and 8,12-dimethyloctacosanes; and (4) in the methyl branch positions of dimethyl-branched alkanes with carbon backbones of C31, C33, C35, C45, C47, C49 and C51. The methyl branch points of H. virescens dimethylalkanes were separated by seven or nine methylenes, while in H. zea the methyl branch points of the dimethylalkanes were separated by three and sometimes five methylenes.  相似文献

The cuticular lipids of the grasshoppers Melanoplus sanguinipes and Melanoplus packardii contain 60 and 68% alkanes and 28 and 18% secondary alcohol wax esters, respectively, with lesser amounts of normal and sterol wax esters, triglycerides, alcohols, sterols, and free fatty acids. All the hydrocarbons are saturated, and four types of alkanes are present: n-alkanes, 3-methylalkanes, internally branched monomethylalkanes, and internally branched dimethylalkanes. The principal n-alkanes in both insects are C(29) and C(27), with a range from C(21) to C(33). Trace amounts of 3-methylalkanes of 28, 30, and 32 total carbons are present. The principal internally branched monomethylalkanes are C(32) and C(34), whereas the main dimethylalkane contains 35 carbons. The n-alkanes do not correspond in chain length to the secondary alcohols. The primary alcohols range from C(22) to C(32) in both insects, with C(24) and C(26) predominating. The fatty acids in the triglyceride and free fatty acid fractions range from C(12) to C(24) in M. sanguinipes and from C(12) to C(18) in M. packardii.  相似文献

Gas chromatography of cuticular hydrocarbons was used to assess genetic similarity and heterozygosity between 18 sympatric populations of adult Ixodes ricinus ticks collected from Poland. Sixteen n-alkanes, 45 monomethylalkanes, and 36 dimethylalkanes were identified. Forty-one compounds were detected in 90% of the specimens and nine hydrocarbons were present in all the specimens studied. Visual inspection of chromatograms revealed major differences in the relative abundance of hydrocarbons between populations of I. ricinus. The average proportion of heterozygotic hydrocarbons was 50.68%, while the average genetic similarity among all populations was 0.967. Two other methods were used to measure the intrapopulation variability: the number of isomeric forms for each hydrocarbon and the range of hydrocarbon abundance. It was found that some hydrocarbons manifested an unexpectedly high number of isomeric patterns, such as nonacosane (21 patterns), triacontane (23), pentacosane (26), and hexacosane (28). Our data suggest that I. ricinus ticks from Poland consist of several interbreeding, non-isolated populations, with a high degree of genetic flow between them.  相似文献

Cuticular hydrocarbon mixtures can be used to discriminate insect taxa. They have utility for determining phylogenetic relationships where they are independent characters with discrete states and represent a hierarchical distribution of shared, derived characters. We report inferred degrees of relatedness among the chemical phenotypes of Reticulitermes from PAUP (phylogenetic analysis using parsimony) analyses of cuticular hydrocarbon characters. One hundred and forty-one Reticulitermes colonies collected from California, Georgia, New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada were used. Initial maximum parsimony analyses sorted the 141 colonies into 26 chemical phenotypes. Subsequent analyses, using the ancestral species Coptotermes formosanus and Heterotermes sp. as outgroups, sorted Reticulitermes taxa into three major lineages, each characterized by a different set of dominant methyl-branched or unsaturated hydrocarbon components. Reticulitermes in lineage I have cuticular hydrocarbon mixtures with a preponderance of internally branched monomethylalkanes and 11,15-dimethylalkanes. Those in lineage II are defined by a preponderance of 5-methylalkanes and 5,17-dimethylalkanes. Taxa in lineage III are characterized by the predominance of olefins and a relative paucity of n-alkanes and methyl-branched alkanes. Bootstrap analyses and decay indices provided statistical support and robustness for these chemical-based relationships.  相似文献

The relationships between female attractiveness, cuticular hydrocarbons, and levels of juvenile hormone and ecdysteroids were studied in Calliphora vomitoria. The experiments were conducted at 48 and 72 h post-emergence, according to attractiveness appearance and increase. The 48-h-old allatectomized females were less attractive than the control females, whereas no changes occurred either in cuticular hydrocarbons total mass production or in the different hydrocarbon families. However, the 72-h-old allatectomized females were more attractive than the control females, and, in relative proportions, allatectomy led to an increase in monomethylalkanes and a decrease in n-alkanes. Only at 48 h were the ovariectomized females less attractive than the control females and did ovariectomy increase the relative proportions of monomethylalkanes. At 72 h, ovariectomy did not influence female attractiveness, but it decreased the total cuticular hydrocarbon production. Allatectomy and ovariectomy significantly decreased ecdysteroids levels at 48 and 72 h. Ovariectomy did not affect juvenile hormone production. These results suggest that attractiveness and cuticular hydrocarbon synthesis could be under the direct control of ecdysteroids and the indirect influence of juvenile hormone. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Novel trimethyl-branched alkanes which eluted with the monomethylalkanes were identified in the internal lipids of Helicoverpa zea but were not present in Heliothis virescens. Their structures were unique in that the first methyl branch occurred on carbon 2 and the 2nd and 3rd methyl branch points were separated by a single methylene. Novel trimethylalkanes identified from their chemical ionization and electron impact mass spectra were 2,18,20-trimethyltetratriacontane, 2,18,20-trimethylhexatriacontane, and 2,24,26-trimethyldotetracontane. Previous reports did not find these trimethylalkanes in the cuticular surface lipids of larvae, pupae or adults of either species. The internal pupal hydrocarbons of H. virescens and H. zea amounted to 123 μg and 304 μg per pupa, respectively. They consisted of n-alkanes (8 and 4%, respectively) and methyl-branched alkanes (88 and 94%, respectively). The n-alkanes ranged in chain length from approximately 21 to 35 carbons and the methyl-branched alkanes from approximately 26 to 55 carbons vs. methyl-branched alkanes from 28 to 37 carbons previously reported for hydrocarbons from the pupal cuticular surface. The major n-alkane was heptacosane (3.3 and 1.2%, respectively, in H. virescens and H. zea). The major methyl-branched alkanes in H. virescens were methylhentriacontane (15%), methyltritriacontane (12%) and dimethyltritriacontane (10%), and in H. zea were methylnonacosane (17%), dimethylnonacosane (9%) and methylhentriacontane (20%). Except for the novel trimethylalkanes, the methylalkane branch points were predominantly on odd-numbered carbons as has been reported for these and other species.  相似文献
