Heterostyly is a genetic polymorphism in which plant populations are composed of two or more morphs that differ in stigma and anther heights. The polymorphism promotes intermorph pollen transfer, thus outcrossing. Heterostyly has been reported in 28 angiosperm families and is frequently lost in heterostylous lineages. To assess ecological factors related to shifts from heterostyly to monomorphy, we examined the reproductive ecology of heterostylous tropical shrubs of Psychotria . Among 21 species at Barro Colorado Island and the nearby Parque Nacional Soberania, Panama, 14 species were heterostylous while seven were monomorphic. A molecular phylogeny and the existence elsewhere of heterostylous populations indicated that the breakdown of heterostyly had occurred independently. Heterostylous and monomorphic species were visited by the same bee species, although visit frequencies were lower in monomorphic species. Monomorphic species had significantly lower population density and greater fruit set than did heterostylous species. Autonomous autogamy made a large contribution to fruit set in monomorphic species and was only rarely observed in heterostylous species. The results indicate monomorphic and heterostylous species produce more seeds through selfing and outcrossing, respectively. ? Premise of the study: The evolution and development of floral developmental patterns were investigated in three heterostylous and three homostylous species of Lithospermum to determine whether species that independently acquired the same floral form follow the same pattern of development or different patterns. ? Methods: Using light and scanning electron microscopy, we observed developmental patterns in flowers at different stages of maturity. These patterns were compared within individual species, between heterostylous morphs, and among heterostylous and homostylous species. ? Key results: Although heterostyly has been determined by phylogenetic analysis to have originated independently in each of the heterostylous species, flowers of the long-style morph of each species follow similar patterns of gross development, as do those of the short-style morph. In addition, the flowers of each morph develop in a manner similar to those of their respective homostylous, herkogamous relatives. However, the developmental patterns of the stylar epidermal cells differ among these species and between heterostylous and homostylous species. ? Conclusions: Floral developmental patterns in homostylous species provide evidence that modification of specific traits, such as patterns of stylar growth, can lead to the evolution of heterostyly. The developmental changes that affect the positions of the stigmas and anthers in each morph likely involve either temporal or spatial modifications of gene function. The floral developmental patterns described here and the occurrence of multiple types of herkogamy within some species of Lithospermum provide evidence that heterostylous species in the genus have originated via distinct evolutionary developmental pathways.  相似文献

Abstract.— Alternative ontogenetic pathways among heterostylous species of Rubiaceae may reflect differences in their evolutionary histories. In this study, measurements were taken at different developmental stages on a series of long-styled (LS) and short-styled (SS) buds of the heterostylous taxa Psychotria chiapensis, P. poeppigiana , and Bouvardia ternifolia (all Rubiaceae). Results indicated that modifications in growth rates of stamens relative to corollas in all three species led to differences in anther heights between LS and SS flowers. Distinct style heights for LS and SS flowers of P. chiapensis and P. poeppigiana originate in the earlier stages of bud development and are maintained as styles elongate at equal rates. This contrasts with B. ternifolia , which has differences in style heights resulting from unequal relative growth rates between floral morphs. The "approach herkogamous" floral morphology, defined by having stigmas positioned above anthers, has been proposed as a potential evolutionary precursor for heterostylous taxa. To examine this hypothesis, floral development of two species with approach herkogamous morphologies, Psychotria pittieri and P. brachiata , was compared to that of the three heterostylous taxa. Differences in the relative rates of style elongation for flowers of approach herkogamous versus heterostylous species predict additional steps in the original model for the evolution of heterostyly from an approach herkogamous ancestor. The diversity of heterostylous ontogenies found within Rubiaceae provides insight into potential evolutionary pathways for this sexual system in other angiosperm families.  相似文献

Darwin's book, The Different Forms of Flowers on Plants of the Same Species, has stimulated an extraordinary amount of original research since its publication in 1877. In his book, Darwin focused primarily on heterostylous reproductive systems in flowering plants, in which two or three reproductive morphs with reciprocal placement of anthers and stigmas occur in populations. These morphs are usually self‐incompatible and cross‐incompatible with individuals possessing the same reproductive morph. Many of the papers on heterostyly published since Forms of Flowers appeared have focused on the questions raised by Darwin about the evolution and function of heterostyly. Darwin's hypothesis that heterostyly promotes cross‐pollination between different morphs has been largely substantiated, despite the difficulties in finding the ideal experimental system to address this question. Heterostyly is now known to occur in many more plant families than at the time Forms of Flowers was published and, as expected, the heterostylous syndrome is now defined more broadly than in Darwin's time. The origin of heterostyly remains an area of active research, with hypotheses stressing either the evolution of heteromorphic self‐incompatibility as the first step in the evolution of this reproductive system or, alternatively, the evolution of the reciprocal features of floral morphology. Phylogenetic approaches, combined with studies on the physiological and molecular genetic basis of heterostyly, offer promise in helping to resolve questions about the origin of heterostyly. There is no doubt that heterostyly has evolved on multiple occasions and that self‐incompatibility associated with heterostyly is unrelated to the more common multi‐allelic self‐incompatibility systems found in monomorphic species. Further progress in understanding conditions favouring evolution of heterostyly will depend on an increased understanding of the relation between the reciprocal morphological features of the breeding system and the nature of self‐incompatibility. The origin and adaptive significance of heterostylous breeding systems have fascinated evolutionary biologists since Darwin's early work on the subject. Models of the evolution of heterostyly differ in the emphasis given to different selective forces and in the sequence in which the physiological and morphological components of the polymorphism are thought to arise. Recent field studies of the population biology of heterostylous plants provide support for Darwin's hypothesis that the style-stamen polymorphism promotes disassortative pollination among the floral morphs.  相似文献

Here, we studied the floral morphology and pollination of the distylous plant Linum suffruticosum (Linaceae) in southern Spain.We observed a previously unreported form of distyly that involved twisting and bending of styles and stamens during floral development to achieve three-dimensional reciprocity of anthers and stigmas in the long-styled (pin) and short-styled (thrum) morphs. This developmental pattern causes pin pollen to be placed on the underside of pollinating Usia flies (Bombyliidae), and thrum pollen to be placed on the top of the thorax and abdomen. The pin stigmas contact the flies on the dorsum, apparently picking up predominantly thrum pollen, and the thrum stigmas contact the flies on the ventral surface, apparently picking up predominantly pin pollen.This form of heterostyly would appear on morphological grounds to be far more efficient in dispersing pollen between compatible morphs than the typical pin-thrum system. If so, this plant fits Darwin's prediction of efficient pollen flow between heterostylous morphs more closely than anything Darwin himself reported.Molecular phylogenetic analyses indicate that this form of heterostyly evolved in a lineage that already had typical heterostyly. The analyses also indicate that there have been several independent origins of heterostyly in Linum and at least one reversal to stylar monomorphism.  相似文献

One of the most common trends in plant evolution, loss of self‐incompatibility and ensuing increases in selfing, is generally assumed to be associated with a suite of phenotypic changes, notably a reduction of floral size, termed the selfing syndrome. We investigate whether floral morphological traits indeed decrease in a deterministic fashion after losses of self‐incompatibility, as traditionally expected, using a phylogeny of 124 primrose species containing nine independent transitions from heterostyly (heteromorphic incompatibility) to homostyly (monomorphic self‐compatibility), a classic system for evolution of selfing. We find similar overall variability of homostylous and heterostylous species, except for diminished herkogamy in homostyles. Bayesian mixed models demonstrate differences between homostylous and heterostylous species in all traits, but net effects across species are small (except herkogamy) and directionality differs among traits. Strongly drift‐like evolutionary trajectories of corolla tube length and corolla diameter inferred by Ornstein–Uhlenbeck models contrast with expected deterministic trajectories toward small floral size. Lineage‐specific population genetic effects associated with evolution of selfing may explain that reductions of floral size represent one of several possible outcomes of floral evolution after loss of heterostyly in primroses. Contrary to the traditional paradigm, selfing syndromes may, but do not necessarily evolve in response to increased selfing.  相似文献

Fourteen native species of Linum are recognized in southern Africa, all of which belong to sect. Linopsis. Four are commonly accepted species; four were described more than a century ago but have not been recognized in recent treatments; six are newly described. Thirteen species are endemic; one ranges as far north as Angola and Tanzania. Among the new species two are heterostylous, the first described for the genus from this region.
The section Linopsis ranges broadly from the Mediterranean region to southern Africa and to both North and South America. The occurrence in the Mediterranean region of species exhibiting such features as heterostyly and chromosome numbers of 2n = 18 or 20, the only diploids known in the section, seems to indicate that in that region are to be found the most primitive species of the section. The close similarity between species of southern Africa and a number of South American and North American species appears to place the southern African species in an intermediate evolutionary position with respect to the Old and New World species of the section.  相似文献

Functional fragments of presumably a relictual gametophytic self-incompatibility system (GSI) linked with the loci determining flower type were discovered by genetic analysis of an unilateral pre-zygotic barrier between the short-styled (thrum) morph of a heterostylous cross-pollinated species, Fagopyrum esculentum Moench., and a self-pollinator with homostylous flowers, F. homotropicum Ohnishi (asseccion C9139). The relic genes of GSI were revealed only in interspecific crosses. However, this is a direct experimental confirmation of a hypothesis proposed by Lewis (1954) which combined the heterostyly supergene components (G, P and A) with "pistil" and "pollen" parts of the S-locus of homomorphic self-incompatibility systems (I1 and I2). Also, this result provides strong evidence for the evolution of heterostyly upon the ruins of a gametophytic self-incompatibility system.  相似文献

Heterostyly (i.e., reciprocal placement of anthers and stigmas between two or three floral morphs) is hypothesized to enhance outcrossing and reduce selfing. However, few studies have documented reciprocity among individual plants; instead, mean anther and stigma heights for floral morphs are usually reported, masking interindividual variation. We measured eight floral dimensions for individuals in five populations of three heterostylous Rubiaceae. The three methods used to quantify reciprocity yielded different conclusions regarding the degree to which populations conformed to expectations for heterostylous plants. Only Psychotria poeppigiana had stigma and, to a lesser degree, anther heights in discrete classes. Variation among plants of Bouvardia ternifolia and Psychotria chiapensis yielded a continuum of anther and stigma heights across populations. Comparison of distances between stigma and anthers indicated that only flowers of B. ternifolia had, as expected, a constant value for this distance. Finally, regression relationships between anther and stigma heights and corolla length showed that only in one population each of B. ternifolia and P. poeppigiana, and in P. chiapensis, was distance between anthers and stigmas the same across the range of corolla sizes for both floral morphs. Variation among these species in expression of heterostyly was not clearly linked to phylogenetic relationship or pollinator syndromes. Two approach herkogamous (AH) species were studied for comparison. Flowers of Psychotria brachiata were consistently AH, but flowers of P. pittieri were highly variable. Determining fitness consequences of population-level variation in sexual systems requires studies linking floral morphology to pollinator behavior and pollen transfer.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Heterostylous plants have been characterized by the presence of two or three discrete morphs that differ in their sex organ position within populations. This polymorphism is widely distributed among the angiosperms, but detailed studies are limited to few taxonomic groups. Although a small representation, evolutionary meaningful variations of the heterostylous syndrome have been reported when precise measurements of the sexual whorls were taken. A thorough exploration of groups where heterostyly has been reported should offer new opportunities to further testing the evolutionary hypotheses explaining heterostyly. Here, the traits defining heterostyly were explored in half of the species in Nivenia, the only genus of Iridiaceae where heterostyly has been reported.

Methods

Detailed morphometric analysis of the flower sexual whorls and some traits considered as ancillary are supplied to determine for each population (a) the kind of stylar polymorphism, (b) the morph ratio and (c) the degree of reciprocity between sexual whorls. Also the rates of assortative (within morph) versus disassortative (between morphs) pollen transfer were estimated by analysing pollen loads on stigmas. The association between floral phenotypic integration and the reciprocity between sexual whorls was estimated; both characteristics have been quoted as dependent on the accuracy of the fit between pollinators and flowers and therefore related to the efficiency of pollen transfer.

Key Results

Different types of polymorphism, differing in their degree of reciprocity, were found in Nivenia. Effective disassortative mating appears to be common, since (a) all dimorphic populations show equal morph-ratios (isoplethy), and (b) the pollen placed on the stigmas of each morph is likely to be coming from the other (complementary) morph. The most reciprocal populations of the heterostylous species have also the highest values of phenotypical integration.

Conclusions

Stigma height dimorphism, as opposed to distyly, is proven for the first time in Nivenia. The presence of different types of polymorphism within the genus is consistent with hypotheses of the evolution of heterostyly. The role of the pollinators as the leading force of the transition seems to be apparent, since floral integration is related to reciprocity.  相似文献

Flowering phenology of alpine plants is strongly determined by the timing of snowmelt, and the conditions of pollination of widely distributed plants vary greatly during their flowering season. We examined the reproductive success of the distylous alpine herb, Primula modesta, along the snowmelt gradient under natural conditions, and compared it with the result of artificial pollination experiments. In addition, the compositions and visit frequencies of pollinators to the flower of P. modesta were examined during the flowering period. The pin and thrum plants of P. modesta growing at the same site have an equal ability to produce seeds if a sufficient amount of legitimate pollen grains are deposited on the stigma surface. However, under natural conditions, their seed‐set success was often (even if not always) restricted by pollen limitation, and the functional gender of the pin and thrum plants biased to the female and male, respectively, associated with their growing sites. These variations were not ascribed to resource limitation nor biased morph ratio but to the seasonal changes in pollination situations, a replacement of pollinator types from long‐ to short‐tongued pollinators resulted in unidirectional pollen transfer from long stamens (thrum plants) to long styles (pin plants). The functional gender specialization may enhance the evolution of dioecy from heterostyly, but the severe pollen limitation may cause the breakdown of heterostyly into homostyly. To consider the evolutionary pathway of heterostylous plants, an accumulation of the empirical data is required demonstrating how phenological synchrony between plants and pollinators is decided and to what degree this relationship is stable over years, along with estimates of selection and gene flow in individual plants.  相似文献

Heterostyly is a specialised floral polymorphism consisting in the presence within the populations of two or three morphs that differ reciprocally in sexual organ position. The function of heterostyly has usually been related to the promotion of cross-pollination fostered by the perfect adjustment between pollinators and flower morphologies. Rubiaceae is the largest family in which this polymorphism is present. Nevertheless, just a few studies on the evolution of heterostyly have been carried out in this family.To investigate the appearance and maintenance of heterostyly we select the subfamily Rubioideae as study group. Rubioideae occur in both tropical and temperate regions and since the tropics are known to contain higher biodiversity and greater ecological specialisation than temperate areas, we characterise the taxa as tropical, non-tropical or mixed distributed (when they are present in tropical and non-tropical areas) and explored whether the heterostyly, as a specialised system, is more stable in tropical regions than in other climates of the world.Ancestral nodes in Rubioideae present heterostyly, which also is maintained along most evolutionary lineages of this group. Although we do not find a significant correlation between the presence of heterostyly and the climate zones along the whole subfamily, our results show that two of the main clades in the Spermacoceae alliance where heterostyly is lost are distributed in non-tropical areas or, at least, they are not restricted to tropical distributions.These results partially support the hypothesis that plant lineages when exposed to different pollination scenarios may evolve towards divergent pollination systems and different degrees of specialisation. However, a more detailed analysis at the species level is suggested for future studies.  相似文献

Background and Aims: Oxalis pes-caprae is a widespread invasive weed in regions witha Mediterranean climate. In its native habitat (southern Africa)this species has been reported as heterostylous with trimorphicflowers and a self- and morph-incompatible reproductive system.In most of the areas invaded, only a pentaploid short-styledmorphotype that reproduces mainly asexually by bulbils is reported,but this has only been confirmed empirically. This study aimsto analyse the floral morph proportions in a wide distributionarea, test the sexual female success, and explain the causesof low sexual reproduction of this species in the western areaof the Mediterranean Basin. Methods: Fifty-five populations of O. pes-caprae were sampled in theIberian Peninsula and Morocco to evaluate the floral morph ratioand individual fruit set. In plants from a dimorphic population,hand-pollination experiments were performed to evaluate theeffect of the pollen source on pollen tube growth through thestyle. The ploidy level and genome size of individuals of eachfloral morph were analysed using flow cytometry. Key Results: From the populations studied 89·1 % were monomorphic,with most of them containing the short-styled (SS) floral morph,and 10·9 % were dimorphic containing long-styled(LS) and SS morphs. In some of these, isoplethy was verifiedbut no fruit production was observed in any population. A sterileform was also recorded in several populations. Hand-pollinationexperiments revealed that pollen grains germinated over recipientstigmas. In intermorph crossings, pollen tubes were able todevelop and fruit initiation was observed in some cases, whilein intramorph pollinations, pollen tube development was sporadicand no fruit initiation was observed. All individuals withineach floral form presented the same DNA ploidy level: SS plantswere pentaploid and LS and the sterile form were tetraploid. Conclusions: The low or null sexual reproduction success of this speciesin the area of invasion studied seems related with the highfrequency of monomorphic populations, the unequal proportionof floral morphs in dimorphic populations and the presence ofdifferent ploidy levels between SS and LS morphs. The discoveryof the occurrence of an LS floral morph and a sterile form,whose invading capacity in these areas is as yet unknown, willbe valuable information for management programmes.  相似文献

Two new Fagopyrum (Polygonaceae) species, F. gracilipedoides and F. jinshaense, are described. Fagopyrum gracilipedoides was only found at Baoshan village, Lijiang district, Yunnan province, China. This species resembles the weedy species, F. gracilipes in morphology but they differ in both mating system and ploidy level; F. gracilipedoides is a heterostylous self-incompatible diploid species (2n = 16), whereas F. gracilipes is a self-compatible tetraploid species (2n = 32). Fagopyrum jinshaense was found along the Jinsha River valley near the border of Sichuan, Yunnan, and Tibet in China. Fagopyrum jinshaense is morphologically similar to F. gilesii, but they differ in the morphology of their inflorescences. Fagopyrum jinshaense has long spike-like inflorescences, whereas F. gilesii has a compact head-like one. Both F. jinshaense and F. gilesii are self-incompatible with heterostylous flowers and are diploid. Interspecific crosses between the two new species and already known species in the urophyllum group of Fagopyrum resulted in the production of self- and cross-sterile hybrids in the species combinations attempted. These results indicated that both new species are reproductively isolated from other Fagopyrum species. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on the nucleotide sequence of the trnK gene intron in chloroplast DNA revealed the following points: 1) F. gracilipedoides, F. rubifolium and F. gracilipes / F. capillatum showed a trifurcating relationship and 2) F. jinshaense formed a clade with F. pleioramosum, F. callanthum, and F. macrocarpum, and was only distantly related to F. gilesii. In the clade of F. capillatum, F. gracilipes, F. gracilipedoides and F. rubifolium, the breakdown of self-incompatibility accompanying genome duplication seems to have occurred twice independently.  相似文献

We studied the development of 26 flower traits under natural conditions in three clades of the genus Amsinckia (Boraginaceae). Each clade contained both a derived highly self-fertilizing taxon and an ancestral more highly outcrossing taxon. The more outcrossing taxa contained two flower morphs—pins and thrums—with opposite positioning of the sex organs (heterostyly). The highly selfing taxa had smaller flowers with sex organs in close proximity (homostyly). Growth trajectories were quantified over the entire or nearly the entire period from primordium initiation to flower opening. These trajectories were compared in the heterochronic framework and, in contrast with previous studies, character size was tracked over time rather than relative to another character. We focused on three hypotheses: (1) The distinct developmental trajectories leading to pins and thrums should be similar in all clades, while the trajectories leading to homostylous flowers might differ among clades. This was supported. Specifically, contrasting growth rates of stamen and pistil heights in heterostylous flowers caused pin and thrum flowers to have the reciprocal arrangement of anther and stigma heights. From the viewpoint of heterochrony, the decreased size (paedomorphosis) of the homostylous morph, compared to pins and thrums, resulted from decreased growth rate (neoteny) and earlier offset (progenesis) in all clades. Nevertheless, multiple heterochronic processes were involved in the mosaic development and evolution of homostylous flowers. (2) We tested the hypothesis that small, self-fertilizing flowers have reduced development times, one of the proposed selective advantages of increased self-fertilization rates. We found in contrast that developmental duration of homostylous flowers was either the same (two clades) or longer (one clade) compared to duration of pins and thrums. (3) Finally, we tested von Baer’s Law, which proposes that developmental differences among closely related taxa should arise later in development than differences among more distantly related taxa. Von Baer’s Law was supported strongly among homostyles, moderately among thrums and weakly among pins.  相似文献
