Several lignin model polymers and their derivatives comprised exclusively of β-O-4 or 8-O-4' interunitary linkages were synthesized to better understand the relation between the thermal mobility of lignin, in particular, thermal fusibility and its chemical structure; an area of critical importance with respect to the biorefining of woody biomass and the future forest products industry. The phenylethane (C6-C2)-type lignin model (polymer 1) exhibited thermal fusibility, transforming into the rubbery/liquid phase upon exposure to increasing temperature, whereas the phenylpropane (C6-C3)-type model (polymer 2) did not, forming a char at higher temperature. However, modifying the Cγ or 9-carbon in polymer 2 to the corresponding ethyl ester or acetate derivative imparted thermal fusibility into this previously infusible polymer. FT-IR analyses confirmed differences in hydrogen bonding between the two model lignins. Both polymers had weak intramolecular hydrogen bonds, but polymer 2 exhibited stronger intermolecular hydrogen bonding involving the Cγ-hydroxyl group. This intermolecular interaction is responsible for suppressing the thermal mobility of the C6-C3-type model, resulting in the observed infusibility and charring at high temperatures. In fact, the Cγ-hydroxyl group and the corresponding intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions likely play a dominant role in the infusibility of most native lignins.  相似文献

Chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol)/gelatin (CS/PVA/GA) ternary blend films were prepared by solution blending method in this study. The thermal properties of the CS/PVA/GA ternary blend films were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The melting point of the CS/PVA/GA ternary blend film was increased when the amount of GA in the blend film was increased based upon the DSC thermal analysis. Results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses indicated that the intensity of diffraction peak at 19 degrees of PVA became lower and broader with increasing the amount of GA in the CS/PVA/GA ternary blend film. Although CS, PVA, and GA are hydrophilic biodegradable polymers, the results of water contact angle measurements are still as high as 83 degrees, 68 degrees, and 66 degrees, respectively. A minimum water contact angle (56 degrees) was observed when the ternary blend film contains 50 wt.% GA (i.e. GA5). This behavior is primarily due to the reorientation of polar functional groups toward to the top surface of CS/PVA/GA ternary blend films.  相似文献

Ternary compatible blends of chitosan, poly(vinyl alcohol), and poly(lactic acid) were prepared by an oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion process. Solutions of chitosan in aqueous acetic acid, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in water, and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) in chloroform were blended with a high-shear mixer. PVA was used as an emulsifier to stabilize the emulsion and to reduce the interfacial tension between the solid polymers in the blends produced. It proved to work very well because the emulsions were stable for periods of days or weeks and compatible blends were obtained when PVA was added. This effect was attributed to a synergistic effect of PVA and chitosan because the binary blends PVA/PLA and chitosan/PLA were completely incompatible. The blends were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal mechanical analysis (TMA), stress-strain tests, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results indicated that despite the fact that the system contained distinct phases some degree of molecular miscibility occurred when the three components were present in the blend.  相似文献

The blend films of ungelatinized and gelatinized starch/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were prepared with a solution casting method by the introduction of additives (glycerol/urea) or not. The phase morphologies and thermal behaviors of the blends were carefully analyzed. A droplet phase was observed in the blends containing ungelatinized starch and a laminated phase was observed in the blends containing gelatinized starch. For both ungelatinized and gelatinized starch/PVA blends, the melting temperature (T(m)) (210-230°C) of PVA was detected, and the T(m) of gelatinized starch/PVA blends was higher than that of the ungelatinized starch/PVA blends. Blend films containing 16.8wt% of glycerol or urea exhibited a decreased T(m). The introduction of additives (glycerol or urea) reduced the decomposition onset temperature of the blend films. These various morphologies and thermal behaviors could be attributed to the different hydrogen bonding interaction characteristics between starch and polyvinyl alcohol at different conditions.  相似文献

Lignin-based fibers were produced by electrospinning aqueous dispersions of lignin, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). Defect-free nanofibers with up to 90 wt % lignin and 15% CNCs were achieved. The properties of the aqueous dispersions, including viscosity, electrical conductivity, and surface tension, were examined and correlated to the electrospinnability and resulting morphology of the composite fibers. A ternary lignin-PVA-water phase diagram was constructed as a tool to rationalize the effect of mixing ratios on the dispersion electrospinability and morphology of the resulting fibers. The influence of reinforcing CNCs on the thermal properties of the multicomponent fibers was investigated by using thermal gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The thermal stability of the system was observed to increase owing to a strong interaction of the lignin-PVA matrix with the dispersed CNCs, mainly via hydrogen bonding, as observed in Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy experiments.  相似文献

Pehuen cellulosic husk was characterized and employed as reinforcement for composite materials. In this research, thermoplastic pehuen starch (TPS) and TPS/poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composites, reinforced with 5 and 10% of pehuen husk, were prepared by melt-blending. Comparative samples of pehuen TPS and TPS/PLA/PVA blend were also studied. Physical, thermal, structural and mechanical properties of composites were evaluated. Pehuen husk mainly consists of cellulose (50wt%), hemicellulose (30wt%) and lignin (14wt%). In respect to lipids, this husk has only a 0.6wt%. Its surface is smooth and damage-free and it is decomposed above 325°C. The incorporation of pehuen husk improved considerably the thermal stability and mechanical properties of the studied composites, mainly in TPS composites. Their thermal stability enhances since biofiber hinders the "out-diffusion" of volatile molecules from the polymer matrix, while mechanical properties could raise due to the natural affinity between husk and starch in the pehuen seed.  相似文献

Aiming at understanding the molecular mechanism of the lignin dissolution in imidazolium‐based ionic liquids (ILs), this work presents a combined quantum chemistry (QC) calculation and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation study on the interaction of the lignin model compound, veratrylglycerol‐β‐guaiacyl ether (VG) with 1‐allyl‐3‐methylimidazolium chloride ([Amim]Cl). The monomer of VG is shown to feature a strong intramolecular hydrogen bond, and its dimer is indicated to present important π‐π stacking and intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions. The interactions of both the cation and anion of [Amim]Cl with VG are shown to be stronger than that between the two monomers, indicating that [Amim]Cl is capable of dissolving lignin. While Cl anion forms a hydrogen‐bonded complex with VG, the imidazolium cation interacts with VG via both the π‐π stacking and intermolecular hydrogen bonding. The calculated interaction energies between VG and the IL or its components (the cation, anion, and ion pair) indicate the anion plays a more important role than the cation for the dissolution of lignin in the IL. Theoretical results provide help for understanding the molecular mechanism of lignin dissolution in imidazolium‐based IL. The theoretical calculations on the interaction between the lignin model compound and [Amim]Cl ionic liquid indicate that the anion of [Amim]Cl plays a more important role for lignin dissolution although the cation also makes a substantial contribution.  相似文献

A novel antibacterial film was prepared by blending konjac glucomannan (KGM) and poly(diallydimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) in an aqueous system. The antibacterial activity of the films against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Saccharomyces were measured by the halo zone test and the double plate method. The films exhibited an excellent antibacterial activity against B. subtilis and S. aureus but not against E. coli, P. aeruginosa or Saccharomyces. The miscibility, morphology, thermal stability, water vapour permeability and mechanical properties of the blend films were investigated by density determination, SEM, ATR-IR, XRD, DSC, TGA, WVA and tensile tests. The results of density determination predicted that the blends of KGM and PDADMAC were miscible when the PDADMAC content was less than 70 wt%. Moreover, SEM and XRD confirmed the result. ATR-IR showed that strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions occurred between KGM and PDADMAC in the blends. The tensile strength and the break elongation of the blends were improved largely to 106.5 MPa and 32.04% and the water vapour permeability decreased when the PDADMAC content was 20 wt%. The thermal stability of the blends was higher than pure KGM. The blends should be good antibacterial materials.  相似文献

Temperature-dependent secondary structures of the amyloid beta(1-40) peptide in the solid state were studied by simultaneous Fourier transform infrared/differential scanning calorimetry (FT-IR/DSC) microspectroscopic system with the heating-cooling-reheating cycle. The result indicates that a thermal transition temperature at 45 degrees C was easily obtained from the three-dimensional plot of the transmission FT-IR spectra as a function of temperature. Furthermore, the thermal-dependent conformational transformations, due to denaturation and aggregation, of solid amyloid beta(1-40) were mainly evidenced by reducing the compositions from 37 to 20-24% for alpha-helical and random coil structures but increasing the components from 27 to 45% for intermolecular beta-sheet structures. Thermal-irreversible behavior and a poor thermal stability of solid amyloid beta(1-40) were also observed from the poor restoration of the secondary conformational changes in the heated sample.  相似文献

A series of starch/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films, denoted SP films, with varying concentrations (5–30 wt%) of citric acid (CA) were solvent cast at 140 °C. The effects of CA on the chemical structure, thermal properties, swelling degree, mechanical properties, crystallinity, and cytotoxicity were investigated. Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy showed that an esterification took place between CA and starch (or PVA) during molding at 140 °C. This esterification and the multi-carboxyl structure of CA resulted in a chemical cross-linking of the blended system. Furthermore, the esterification occurred more easily between starch and CA as opposed to between the PVA and CA. The residual-free CA acted as a plasticizer for the starch and PVA. As compared to the hydroxyl groups on glycerol, the carboxyl groups on CA were capable of forming stronger hydrogen bonds between CA and other components, and this cross-linking and strong hydrogen bonding enhanced the thermal stability of the SP films. Consequently, the water absorbance decreased from 33% to 20% as the CA percentage increased from 5 to 30 wt%. When 5 wt% CA was added, the tensile strength of the sample increased from 39 to 48 MPa, but when even more CA was added (from 5 to 30 wt%), the tensile strength decreased from 48 to 42 MPa and the elongation at break increased from 102% to 208%. This was caused by the plasticizing effect of the residual-free CA in the blend. The cell relative growth rates of samples with varying CA concentrations exceeded 80% after 7 days of incubation, and this demonstrated that there was no significant toxicity on the cells’ growth when the CA content was less than 20 wt%.  相似文献

Based on the biomimetic approaches the present work describes a straightforward technique to mimic not only the architecture (the morphology) but also the chemistry (the composition) of the lowest level of the hierarchical organization of bone. This technique uses an electrospinning (ES) process with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanoparticles. To determine morphology, crystalline structures and thermal properties of the resulting electrospun fibers with the pure PVA and PVA/HAp nanocomposite (NC) before electrospinning various techniques were employed, including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HR-TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). In addition, FT-IR spectroscopy was carried out to analyze the complex structural changes upon undergoing electrospinning as well as interactions between HAp and PVA. The morphological and crystallographic investigations revealed that the rod-like HAp nanoparticles exhibit a nanoporous morphology and are embedded within the electrospun fibers. A large number of HAp nanorods are preferentially oriented parallel to the longitudinal direction of the electrospun PVA fibers, which closely resemble the naturally mineralized hard tissues of bones. Due to abundant OH groups present in PVA and HAp nanorods, they strongly interact via hydrogen bonding within the electrospun PVA/HAp NC fibers, which results in improved thermal properties. The unique physiochemical features of the electrospun PVA/HAp NC nanofibers prepared by the ES process will open up a wide variety of future applications related to hard tissue replacement and regeneration (bone and dentin), not limited to coating implants.  相似文献

Silk fibroin (SF)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) blend filaments were prepared by a wet spinning process. Regenerated SF and PVA were dissolved in formic acid and the dope solution exhibited good fiber formation in a methanol coagulation bath. Due to the miscibility of SF/PVA in formic acid, the filament had a smooth surface and dense structure with a circular cross-section. The crystalline structure and thermal properties were varied with different SF/PVA ratios. The mechanical properties of the filament were also controlled by blending PVA with SF. Especially, the knot strength of the SF filament, which is a very important suture property, could be significantly improved by blending with PVA.  相似文献

Pullulan (PULL)/montmorillonite clay (MMT) nanofiber blend mats with various weight ratios have been fabricated by the electrospinning technique in aqueous solution. The PULL/MMT nanofiber mats are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and mechanical measurements. The study shows that the introduction of MMT results in improvement in tensile strength, and thermal stability of the PULL matrix. XRD patterns and TEM micrographs suggest the coexistence of intercalated MMT layers over the studied MMT contents. XRD analyses also reveal an increase of the crystallinity of the blend nanofiber mats with addition of MMT fillers. Moreover, FT-IR divulges that there might be possible interaction occurred between the MMT clay and PULL matrix.  相似文献

A multifunctional macromolecular thiol (TPVA) obtained by esterification of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with 3-mercaptopropionic acid was characterized by a combination of NMR, IR, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and was used as a wheat gluten (WG) reactive modifier. The effect of TPVA molecular weight (M(w) = 2000, 9500, 50 000, and 205 000) and blend composition (5, 20, and 40% w/w TPVA/WG) on the mechanical properties of compression-molded bars indicates that TPVA/WG blends increase the fracture strength by up to 76%, the elongation by 80%, and the modulus by 25% above WG. In contrast, typical WG additives such as glycerol and sorbitol improve flexibility but decrease modulus and strength. Preliminary investigations of suspension rheology, water uptake, molecular weight distribution and electron microscopy of TPVA/WG and PVA/WG blends illustrate the different protein interactions with PVA and TPVA. Further work is underway to determine whether TPVA and WG form protein conjugates or microphase-separated morphologies.  相似文献

This work aimed to overcome chitosan (CS) membrane' drawbacks: mainly stiffness and hydrophobic surface by adding poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and evaluate their biocompatibility. The chemical structure, crystalline and thermal properties were studied by FT-IR, XRD and DSC. The mechanical properties and wettability of CS/PVA membranes were studied by tensile test and static contact angle measurement. In vitro biocompatibility was also evaluated by MTS cytotoxicity assay and SEM examination. The results suggest that adding PVA into CS membrane could greatly improve CS membrane's flexibility and wettability. All the membranes prepared were biocompatible and have potential applications in GTR technology.  相似文献

The morphology of wheat protein (WG) blends with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and respectively with thiolated polyvinyl alcohol (TPVA) was investigated by atomic force (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) as well as by modulated dynamic scanning calorimetry (MDSC). Thiolated additives based on PVA and other substrates were previously presented as effective means of improving the strength and toughness of compression molded native WG bars via disulfide-sulfhydryl exchange reactions. Consistent with our earlier results, AFM and TEM imaging clearly indicate that the addition of just a few mole percent of thiol to PVA was sufficient to dramatically change its compatibility with wheat protein. Thus, TPVA is much more compatible with WG and phase separates into much smaller domains than in the case of PVA, although there are still two phases in the blend: one WG-rich phase and another TPVA-rich phase. The WG/TPVA blend has phase domains ranging in size from 0.01 to 0.1 microm, which are roughly 10 times smaller than those of the WG/PVA blend. MDSC further illustrates the compatibilization of the protein with TPVA via the dependence of the transition temperatures on composition.  相似文献

Alpha1-proteinase inhibitor (alpha1Pi) and ovalbumin are both members of the serpin superfamily. They share about a 30% sequence identity and exhibit great similarity in their three-dimensional structures. However, no apparent functional relationship has been found between the two proteins. Unlike alpha1Pi, ovalbumin shows no inhibitory effect to serine proteases. To see whether or not a conformational factor(s) may contribute to the functional difference, we carried out comparative analysis of the two proteins' secondary structure, thermal stability, and H-D exchange using FT-IR and CD spectroscopy. FT-IR analysis reveals significant differences in the amide I spectral patterns of the two proteins. Upon thermal denaturation, both proteins exhibit a strong low-wavenumber beta-sheet band at 1624 cm(-1) and a weak high-wavenumber beta-sheet band at 1694 cm(-1), indicative of intermolecular aggregate formation. However, the midpoint of the thermal-induced transition of alpha1Pi (approximately 55 degrees C) is 18 degrees C lower than that of ovalbumin (approximately 73 degrees C). The thermal stability analysis provides new insight into the structural changes associated with denaturation. The result of H-D exchange explains some puzzling spectral differences between the two proteins in D2O reported previously.  相似文献

Starch/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films were prepared with calcium chloride (CaCl(2)) as the plasticizer. The micro morphology of pure starch/PVA film and CaCl(2) plasticized starch/PVA film was observed by scanning electron microscope. The interaction between CaCl(2) and starch/PVA molecules was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The influence of CaCl(2) on the crystalline, thermal and mechanical properties of starch/PVA films was studied by X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and tensile testing, respectively. The results indicated that CaCl(2) could interact with starch and PVA molecules and then effectively destroy the crystals of starch and PVA. Starch/PVA films plasticized with CaCl(2) became soft and ductile, with lower tensile strength and higher elongation at break compared with pure starch/PVA film. The water content of starch/PVA film would increase with the addition of CaCl(2). This is an important cause of the plasticization of CaCl(2) on starch/PVA film.  相似文献

The effects of hydrophilic and hydrophobic characteristics of proteins on the interactions with corn starch were investigated in this study. The model system included corn starch and proteins, i.e. zein, gliadin, gluten, soy protein and rapeseed protein. The blend films were prepared by thermo-moulding in gentle conditions at 70 °C in order to avoid starch gelatinization, with respect to water content, and avoid protein denaturation. The effects of different kinds of proteins on structure and mechanical behaviour of blend biomaterials were characterised by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and tensile test, respectively. The effects of different kinds of proteins on intermolecular interactions between proteins and starch were investigated by dynamical mechanical thermal analysis. Based on the solubility measurement results, almost all protein films showed the similar solubility to the natural protein powders, resulting from the weak influence of mild thermo-moulding treatment on protein inner structure. Different morphologies were observed for different proteins and corresponding blends, which are relatively loose protein architecture that appeared for hydrophobic protein and blend films, and uniform and densely packed architecture for hydrophilic ones. Moreover, different mechanical behaviours were obtained for different proteins and corresponding blends. No significantly increased strength for hydrophilic protein blends with starch added can be explained that there is weak intermolecular interaction between both components based on SEM observation. However, the addition of corn starch granules in hydrophobic protein networks was assumed that starch destroyed or weakened the protein network, resulting in the decrease of mechanical strength.  相似文献

Crystallization behavior and environmental biodegradability were investigated for the films of bacterial poly(3-hydroxybutyric acid) (PHB) blends with chitin and chitosan. The blend films showed X-ray diffractive peaks that arose from the PHB crystalline component. It was suggested that the lamellar thickness of the PHB crystalline component in the blends was large enough to show detectable X-ray diffractive peaks, but this was too small to show observable melting endotherm in the DSC thermogram and the crystalline band absorption in the FT-IR spectrum. In the PHB/chitin and PHB/chitosan blends, thermal transition temperatures of PHB amorphous region observed by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis were almost the same as that of neat PHB. Both the PHB/chitin and the PHB/chitosan blend films biodegraded in an environmental medium. Several blend films showed faster biodegradation than the pure-state component polymers.  相似文献
