Summary Sorghum (Sorghum bicolar (L) Moench cv EA-955 Serena) seeds, subjected or not to hydration-dehydration treatment were planted in distilled water, NaCl, and Na2SO4. When seeds were not hydrated-dehydrated the salts inhibited both seed germination and seedling vigour, and caused an increase in the per cent of abnormal seedlings. The salts neither inhibited seed germination nor increased the per cent of abnormal seedlings if the seeds were treated by hydration-dehydration. However, this treatment was not effective in overcoming the inhibitory effect of either NaCl or Na2SO4 on seedling vigour. Application of these principles in growing plants under saline environment is discussed.  相似文献

Soil moisture and temperature, sowing depth and penetration resistance affect the time and percentage of seedling emergence, which are crucial for the simulation of drought‐limited crop production. The aim of this research was to measure the effect of soil water potential on germination and emergence, shoot and root elongation rates (SER and RER) of two different seed/crop types. Sugar beet and durum wheat seeds were sown into two soils (clay and loam), submitted to five matric potentials (?0.01, ?0.1, ?0.2, ?0.4 and ?0.8 MPa) and incubated at constant temperature (25°C) and humidity. Cumulative count analysis was used to estimate parameters of the distribution of germination or emergence times for each box of beet or wheat seeds and to derive estimates for base potentials (ψb), hydrothermal times (H) and numbers of viable units. In a second experiment, NaCl solution was used to mimic the soil matric potentials to estimate potential RER and SER. Germination of sugar beet was slightly more sensitive to matric potential than durum wheat (ψb of ?1.13 and ?1.23 MPa, respectively). H(g) was longer for sugar beet than for durum wheat (67 vs 47 MPa °Cd). For emergence ψb was similar for both seed types and soils but hydrothermal times (H(e)) were 40 MPa °Cd higher for sugar beet than for wheat. Emergence was about 20 MPa °Cd earlier in loam than in clay. SER measured in soils were similar for both crops and for durum wheat it agreed with those determined in NaCl solution. RER and SER fell with decreasing osmotic potential to approximately 20% of their maximum values (1.03 mm h?1 and 0.57 mm h?1, respectively). Seedling viability decreased with decreasing matric potential and more in clay than in loam soil and more for sugar beet than durum wheat. Seed and soil aggregate size are discussed with respect to the effects of water diffusion and soil–seed contact on germination and emergence modelling.  相似文献

该研究以掌叶大黄、唐古特大黄和药用大黄种子为材料,采用双层滤纸培养法,设置系列浓度NaCl (0、100、150、200、250 mmol/L) 胁迫试验,以及系列浓度水杨酸(SA)溶液(0、50、100、150、200、250 mg/L)拌种和浸种后盐胁迫实验,测定3种大黄种子萌发及幼苗生长指标,揭示外源水杨酸对盐胁迫下大黄种子萌发及幼苗生长的影响。结果显示:(1)随NaCl浓度增大3种大黄种子的发芽率均呈直线下降趋势,且子叶、胚轴、根和苗等生长均受到强烈抑制。(2)在拌种条件下, 200 mmol/L NaCl胁迫下掌叶大黄苗长在200 mg/L SA处理下受到显著促进; 200 mmol/L NaCl浓度盐胁迫下唐古特大黄种子发芽率在250 mg/L SA处理下受到显著抑制;100 mmol/L NaCl胁迫下药用大黄种子发芽势在200 mg/L SA处理下受到显著抑制,其发芽率在150 mg/L SA处理下得到显著抑制,其苗长在250 mg/L SA处理下受到显著抑制。(3)在浸种条件下, 200 mmol/L NaCl胁迫下掌叶大黄种子发芽率在50 mg/L SA处理下显著提高,其幼苗根长和苗长的生长在250 mg/L SA处理受到显著促进;200 mmol/L NaCl胁迫下唐古特大黄种子的发芽势在200 mg/L SA处理下得到显著促进,其幼苗根和苗的生长在50 mg/L SA处理下得到显著促进;100 mmol/L NaCl 胁迫下药用大黄根和苗的生长在100 mg/L SA处理下均得到显著促进。研究表明,3种大黄种子和幼苗对盐胁迫的响应趋势一致,但对不同浓度SA拌种和浸种的响应有较大差异。  相似文献

Astrodaucus orientalis is a weed species in cropping systems and rangelands in Iran. The effects of temperature, light, NaCl concentration, water potential, seed burial depth and crop residue cover were assessed on seed germination and seedling emergence of two populations of A. orientalis from Ardabil (Meshginshahr population) and East Azarbayjan (Tabriz population) provinces of Iran. The A. orientalis populations indicated different responses to environmental factors and burial depth. In the Tabriz population the greatest germination (88.5%) was observed in 20/12°C day/night temperature but in the Meshginshahr population (83.2%) it was obtained in 24/16°C day/night temperature. Over a broad range of light period (10–24 hr light) germination was 74–83%, but it decreased (less than 37%) under 24 hr dark in both A. orientalis populations. With respect to water potential, the C50 parameters were −0.62 and − 0.49 MPa for Tabriz and Meshginshahr populations, respectively. The D50 parameters (the burial depth that caused 50% decrease in emergence) for Tabriz and Meshginshahr populations were 2.42 and 3.13 cm, respectively. Generally, the results showed that emergence of both populations of A. orientalis was delayed as depth of burial increased up to 4 cm and in cropping systems a shallow tillage that locates the seeds to >4 cm of depth in soil could be used in order to suppress seedling emergence. Our findings also could be useful in integrated management of A. orientalis in winter annual crops and rangelands.  相似文献

The role of the seed coat in adaptation of dimorphic seeds of the euhalophyte Suaeda salsa to salinity was investigated during germination and early seedling growth. Black and brown seeds were treated with chloroform for 1 min before the extract was used to analyze waxes and the seeds to investigate the protective role of the seed coat under saline conditions. Waxes in black seed coats were more abundant than those in brown seed coats. Salinity (500 mM NaCl) increased the concentration of Na+ and decreased the concentration of K+ in both black and brown seeds regardless of chloroform treatment. Chloroform treatment alone (in the absence of NaCl) had no effect on the concentration of Na+ or K+ in black or brown seeds and in the presence of 500 mM NaCl had no effect on the concentration of Na+ or K+ in brown seeds. However, chloroform treatment increased Na+ and decreased K+ in black seeds with 500 mM NaCl. A change of MDA (malondialdehyde) concentration in black and brown seeds treated with or without chloroform was similar to the change of Na+ concentration. High salinity (1500 mM NaCl) pretreatment for 40 days had a less adverse effect on germination of black seeds compared with brown seeds after they were transferred to fresh water regardless of chloroform treatment. Similar results were found for seedling emergence. In conclusion, a black seed coat may be more protective than a brown seed coat, probably by shielding the embryo from ion toxicity, because of its higher content of waxes. Thus black seeds can better maintain seed viability than brown seeds for extended periods under hypersaline conditions.  相似文献

Sand burial, persistent seed bank and soil water content (SWC) are three factors that potentially can affect regeneration in sand dune plant populations. To evaluate the effects of these three factors on population regeneration of Eremosparton songoricum, a rare and endangered legume, we investigated seed germination, seedling emergence and seedling survival in greenhouse and controlled field experiments in different sand dunes microsites. Freshly matured seeds are physically dormant, and the highest germination was only 9.3?±?5.8% at 25/10°C. Seed germination occurred at burial depths from 0 to 10 cm, but the maximum depth from which seedlings emerged was 6 cm; from 1 to 6 cm, the deeper the burial, the lower the percentage of seedling emergence. Only 36.2% of the total soil seed banks occurred at depths of 0?C6 cm. For artificially sown seeds at different dune microsites, mean seedling emergence percentage was 6.8%. Of 150 seedlings that emerged in the field investigation at the study site, only those germinating in flat sandy areas survived, and mean survival percentage was only 2.0%. Thus, the proportion of non-dormant seeds in soil seed banks that developed into seedlings and survived to the end of the growing season was only 0.2%. Minimum SWC for seed germination, seedling emergence and seedling survival was 2.0%. During monitoring of emergent seedlings in the field, low seedling recruitment was at least partly due to the rate of root extension (1.6?±?0.3 cm day?1) into the sandy soil, which was slower than that of the downward movement of plant-available moisture (2.8?±?0.6 cm day?1). Thus, population regeneration under natural conditions rarely occurred via sexual reproduction, owing to the limited water resources available for seedling establishment. Rational field seeding practices, including manually scarified or dry stored seeds before sowing, sowing the seeds at right time and suitable place, are suggested for ecological restoration of endangered E. songoricum populations.  相似文献

Seed priming has proved to be an effective pre-germination seed invigoration technique for different crops to improve seed and seedling performance under different abiotic stresses. In Bangladesh, winter rice is very often exposed to cold waves just after sowing in the nursery bed resulting in poor seed germination and seedling emergence, yellowish and thin seedlings production, and a very low survival rate. Seed priming may mitigate the cold stress during seed germination and seedling emergence and helps in the quality seedling production of winter rice. To evaluate the efficacy of different seed priming techniques in increasing seedling emergence, growth, vigor and survivability of winter rice cultivars under cold stress, a pot experiment was conducted at the Department of Agronomy, Bangladesh Agricultural University during December 2018 to January 2019. The experiment comprised two factors, (A) Winter rice variety namely, i) BRRI dhan29 and ii) BRRI dhan36; (B) Seed priming agent namely i) Control (no priming), ii) 20000 ppm NaCl, iii) 30000 ppm NaCl, iv) 20000 ppm KCl, v) 30000 ppm KCl, vi) 20000 ppm CaCl2, vii) 30000 ppm CaCl2, viii) 50 ppm CuSO4, ix) 75 ppm CuSO4, x) 10000 ppm ZnSO4, xi) 15000 ppm ZnSO4, xii) 2 ppm Na2MoO4, xiii) 3 ppm Na2MoO4, xiv) 100 ppm PEG (Polyethylene glycol 4000) and xv) 150 ppm PEG. Seeds were sown on two different dates viz., 1st December and 1st January so that seedlings are exposed to cold stress at different stages. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. Results indicated that (in most of the cases) seed priming has a positive impact on seedling emergence rate (%), root length, shoot length, root shoot ratio, root dry weight, shoot dry weight, seedling dry weight and survival rate (%). Among the priming agents, KCl and CaCl2 performed best; while priming with NaCl and PEG showed no advantages over no priming for both the sowing dates. In general, BRRI dhan36 performed better than BRRI dhan29 in terms of seedling growth because of its higher tolerance to cold stress. But, both the varieties performed similarly in terms of emergence rate and survival rate. Thus, priming is an effective tool to increase seed germination, better seedling growth, and higher seedling survivability of winter rice under cold stress, and KCl (20000 ppm) or CaCl2 (20000 ppm) can be considered as a viable priming agent.  相似文献

The spatial and temporal fluctuations of water availability can be an obstacle for recruitment of many species in the restinga and might restrict seed germination and seedling growth in specific regeneration safe-sites. Clusia hilariana is one of the most dominant species of Restinga de Jurubatiba. This species has a high proportion of seedling establishment occurring inside the tanks of soil bromeliads underneath vegetation patches. Given the thin seed coats, the fast germination time and seed dispersal of C. hilariana during the dry season, we hypothesized that their major regeneration niche (the tanks of soil bromeliads) is related to susceptibility of seed germination and also seedling growth to low water availability. To test this hypothesis, seeds were germinated under decreasing water potentials using PEG 6000 solutions and seedlings were grown under varying water regimes. The percentage of seed germination progressively decreased at lower water potentials. After 38 days in ?1.0 MPa no seeds germinated. However, approximately 90% of seeds germinated when transferred to Ψ = 0 MPa. The relative growth rates of seedlings of C. hilariana did not differ between water treatments. Thus, the major regeneration niche of C. hilariana is not a consequence of a high sensitivity of seeds and seedlings to water shortage. Nonetheless, C. hilariana showed an array of seed and seedling traits that may help to overcome establishment constraints of the harsh environment of restingas.  相似文献

研究不同浓度(0、1、2、3、6、9、14、18g.L-1)的盐溶液(NaCl、MgSO4、盐渍土壤)对河西走廊中部荒漠边缘的黑果枸杞种子吸胀、萌发和幼苗生长的影响,并观察胁迫解除后种子的反应。结果表明:黑果枸杞种子吸胀速率随NaCl、MgSO4和土壤溶液浓度的增大呈先升后降的趋势,吸水速度随胁迫时间的延长而减慢;种子萌发率随3种盐浓度的增大而降低,盐胁迫解除后种子仍具有较高的萌发率;发芽指数、活力指数、根长、下胚轴随3种盐浓度的增大而降低或先升后降,根轴比随盐胁迫的增强先升后降;随3种盐浓度的增大,种苗损害率增大,3种盐的胁迫效应依次NaCl>MgSO4>盐渍土壤溶液。黑果枸杞种子萌发和幼苗生长对NaCl胁迫较为敏感,其耐受的临界阈值是6g.L-1;种子萌发能耐受较高浓度的MgSO4的胁迫,幼苗生长对MgSO4胁迫较敏感,其耐受的临界阈值是9g.L-1;种子萌发和幼苗生长对生境盐渍土壤具有较强的耐受能力和适应性。  相似文献

以小白菜"甜脆青"为试材,研究不同浓度(5、10、25、50和100 mmol/L)过氧化氢(H2O2)浸种处理对100 mmol/L NaCl胁迫下小白菜(Brassica chinensis L.)种子萌发、幼苗生长及生理特性的影响。结果表明:100 mmol/L NaCl胁迫明显抑制小白菜种子的萌发状况和幼苗生长,发芽势、发芽指数、活力指数及幼苗根和芽长度和鲜重均明显降低,根和芽中CAT的活性及K+含量明显受到抑制,渗透调节物质、活性氧和MDA含量显著增加。不同浓度H2O2浸种处理提高了NaCl胁迫下小白菜种子发芽势、发芽指数和活力指数,促进小白菜根和芽的生长,增强了NaCl胁迫下根和芽中SOD、CAT和APX的活性及K+含量,降低O2产生速率及H2O2和MDA含量,进一步促进脯氨酸和可溶性糖含量的增加,降低体内Na+含量。其中以10 mmol/L H2O2处理缓解盐胁迫效果最好,明显缓解NaCl胁迫对小白菜种子萌发和幼苗生长的抑制。  相似文献

Germination studies are important for collecting information on field seedling recruitment, plant conservation and restoration. This study investigated the role of light, temperature, nitrogen, water stress and burial depth in controlling germination of Stipa bungeana seeds. S. bungeana seeds are photo-inhibited; light significantly decreased seed germination regardless of temperature and water conditions. Seeds germinated at 10–30° C, and the highest germination was 72 % and 88 % at 20° C in light and dark, respectively. Thermal model analysis showed that presence of light significantly increased average thermal requirement [θ T (50)] from 105°Cd to 186°Cd at sub-optimal temperature, implying that light delays seed germination. Hydrotime model analysis showed that presence of light caused a shift in the median base water potential [Ψ b(50)] from ?0.68 to ?0.26 MPa, which partly explains why light decreased both percentage and speed of germination, even at optimal conditions. As burial depth increased, seedling emergence initially increased and then decreased; the highest seedling emergence recruitment was 43 %, for seeds buried at a depth of 1 cm. Field observations showed that seedling emergence occurred primarily from July to September, and scarcely occurred from April to June. These results suggest that the light inhibitory effect is an adaptive mechanism that prevents S. bungeana seeds from germinating on the soil surface. To attain highest seedling establishment, seeds of S. bungeana should be sown at a soil depth of 1 cm prior to the rainy season, using seeds stored for 1 year.  相似文献

On the basis of the germination/dormancy responses of seeds to temperature and light, and local seed rain, we attempted to interpret the seedling emergence patterns of Primula modesta Bisset et Moore (Primulaceae) in two different types of habitats in a subalpine zone of Mt. Asama: an oligotrophic flat moor and a grassland with relatively dense herbaceous vegetation cover. The seasonal pattern of seedling emergence was well explained by the dormancy/germination physiology revealed in laboratory germination tests. The seeds were demonstrated to have a strict light requirement even after experiencing moist chilling, which might facilitate the incorporation of the seeds into the soil seed bank. Despite sufficient seed production, the seedlings emerging were far less at the grassy site than the moor site, but the number of seedlings was significantly dependent on the seed rain within previous season and on the litter cover of the microsite in both sites. Therefore, the spatiotemporal patterns of seedling emergence in the habitats could be well explained by the spatiotemporal patterns of seed rain and safe-sites for germination.  相似文献

再生水资源可浇灌农田,但水中含有的阴离子可使土壤产生盐胁迫。为研究盐胁迫对藜麦(Chenopodium quinoa)种子萌发特性及胚根、胚芽生长的影响,该研究以6个藜麦品种(红藜麦、国红藜麦、台红藜麦、台紫红藜麦、黄藜麦、台黄红藜麦)为材料,分别以NaCl、Na2SO4、NaHCO3和对照(CK)处理6个藜麦品种种子,测定其发芽率、胚根、胚芽抑制率等指标,运用均方差决策法对不同藜麦品种耐盐性进行综合评价,初步筛选出不同盐胁迫下耐盐性较强的品种。结果表明:(1)三种盐胁迫中,Na2SO4对种子萌发指标抑制作用最明显,6个藜麦品种的发芽率均相对较低,一直保持在5%以下,除黄藜麦、台黄红藜麦,其余4个品种的活力指数和生长速率均为0,除黄藜麦外,Na2SO4 对其余5个藜麦品种的胚根、胚芽抑制率均达到100%; NaCl对种子萌发和生长的抑制作用较小,甚至可促进胚根和胚芽生长,国红藜麦和台黄红藜麦的生长速率在NaCl处理下始终高于对照,在9 h和21 h时国红藜麦胚根抑制率为-28.32%和-37.57%。(2)运用均方差决策法对6个藜麦品种的萌发指标和生长指标进行综合评价结果显示,国红藜麦对NaCl、NaHCO3抗性较高,黄藜麦对Na2SO4抗性较高。综合以上结果表明,盐胁迫不利于藜麦种子萌发及生长,但在不同盐分地区种植适宜生长的品种可提高藜麦成活率,提高其生长质量,以达到藜麦园林绿化及再生水资源灌溉的要求。  相似文献

In arid zones, precipitation distribution is extremely uneven, with saline‐waterlogging and dry–moist cycles appearing frequently, which negatively impact on seed germination and seedling establishment. The responses of two halophytes, Suaeda physophora and Haloxylon ammodendron, and a xerophyte, Haloxylon persicum, to saline‐waterlogging and dry–moist cycles were studied. The results showed that aeration increased seed germination for all species when seeds were submerged in NaCl, especially for xerophyte. Compared with S. physophora and H. ammodendron, seed germination, recovery germination, and total germination of H. persicum were much lower when seeds were submerged in 700 mm NaCl, especially for the recovery germination and total germination of nongerminated seeds when the seeds were desiccated and then transferred to distilled water. However, when the seeds were submerged in 700 mm NaCl with aeration, the seed germination, recovery germination, and total germination of nongerminated seeds transferred to distilled water increased dramatically for H. persicum. No adverse effect of desiccation was found on those values of nongerminated seeds pretreated in NaCl with or without aeration for the two halophytes. In conclusion, seeds of the two halophytes were more tolerant to waterlogging and dry–moist cycles than seeds of the xerophyte during emergence under saline conditions; these traits may be important for halophytes to survive extreme saline environments during the seed germination stage.  相似文献

Germination and seedling emergence studies were made on seeds harvested from four different umbel positions of three cultivars of celery (Apium graveolens L.). Although heavier seeds were produced from primary umbels than from other umbels, these were less viable as measured by the germination percentage at I8°C in the light. However, germination of viable seeds from quaternary umbels was lower than that of seeds from primary umbels at 18°C in the dark when incubated with GA4, (2 × 10 ?4M) and seed from secondary and tertiary umbels tended to be intermediate in response. All viable seeds germinated when N6-benzyladenine (10?2M) was used in combination with GA4. Seeds from quaternary umbels of two of the cultivars had a lower high-temperature limit for germination in the dark than did seeds from other umbels. In glasshouse experiments the emergence of viable ‘quaternary’ seeds of these cultivars was higher than that of ‘primary’ seeds. Under these conditions the time to 50% of the final emergence as determined after 42 days was similar for seeds from all umbel positions within each cultivar. In two varieties seedling weights were greater from seeds of primary as compared to quaternary umbels, and in general, the largest seedlings arose from the heaviest seeds and the smallest from the lightest seeds in all three cultivars.  相似文献

Abstract

Seed germination, seedling emergence and seed persistence in the soil were investigated for Dianthus morisianus (Caryophyllaceae), a psammophilous endemic species of Sardinia. Stored and freshly collected seeds were incubated in a range of constant temperatures (5–25°C) and an alternating temperature regime (25/10°C). The effect of seed burial depth on seedling emergence was investigated under controlled environmental conditions. Seed persistence in the soil was verified by in situ experimental seed burials. Seeds of this species were non-dormant, and all seed lots germinated both in the light and darkness, mainly at low temperatures (≤20°C), with a maximum at 15°C (≥95%). Optimal seedling emergence was obtained when seeds were buried at a depth of 1–2 cm, and a declining emergence with increasing depth was observed. D. morisianus was also unable to form a persistent soil seed bank. The fate of the seeds that, after dispersal, do not emerge from the soil in the spring is, therefore, presumably to die before the next favourable growing season.  相似文献

恶劣环境下,人工海防林因面临养分胁迫而经营困难。为探讨盐、磷胁迫对主要海防林树种木麻黄和台湾相思种子萌发及生长的影响,该研究分别用不同浓度的NaCl(盐)和KH2PO4(磷)溶液处理种子和浇灌幼苗,测定种子萌发和幼苗生长指标。结果表明:(1)高盐胁迫显著抑制种子萌发,对幼苗生长有一定影响,但两种植物影响程度不同;台湾相思种子萌发耐盐性高于木麻黄,前者相对盐害率最大值为23.03%,后者为89.15%;随着盐浓度增加,木麻黄和台湾相思种子的发芽率、发芽势、发芽指数和活力指数均降低,对应最大值分别为38.70%、34.67%、18.70、0.055和76.67%、62.22%、48.46、6.11。(2)两种植物的株高和根长随盐浓度增加而降低,木麻黄和台湾相思株高分别为12.29~6.01 mm和48.27~17.33 mm,根长分别为8.57~1.45 mm和33.41~5.88 mm;台湾相思根、茎、叶生物量及根冠比均随盐浓度的增加逐渐减小,木麻黄各处理差异较小。(3)台湾相思的种子和幼苗较木麻黄更耐低磷环境,二者最适磷浓度存在差异;木麻黄种...  相似文献

Laboratory and greenhouse studies were conducted to determine the effects of key environmental factors on germination and seedling emergence of the invasive weed Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. (common ragweed) collected from Mudanjiang (temperate climate), Nanjing (temperate–subtropical) and Nanchang (subtropical) in China. Germination of seeds occurred at temperatures ranging from 5 to 40°C, under both a 12‐h photoperiod and continuous darkness. Germination success exceeded 48% in solutions with pH values between 4 and 12, with maximum rates occurring in distilled water at pH 5.57. Germination was greatly reduced in solutions with osmotic potentials below ?0.8 MPa. Accordingly, the final germination ratio exceeded 69% at <200 mmol/L NaCl, but only reached 8% at 400 mmol/L NaCl. Emergence was greater than 75% at burial seed depths of 1–4 cm; no seedlings emerged from a soil depth of 8 cm. Seeds collected from Mudanjiang, Nanjing and Nanchang had very similar germination traits, with the main differences occurring in relation to temperature. The great germination success of common ragweed over highly variable conditions throughout its Chinese distribution range explains its successful large‐scale invasion.  相似文献

Seed germination and seedling emergence are key processes for population recruitment. Flooding and grazing are disturbances forming gaps that may strongly influence recruitment patterns in space and time, but their combined effects and action mechanisms have rarely been addressed. In this study we analysed the effects of microhabitat conditions associated with winter flooding and spring‐summer defoliation on seed germination and seedling establishment of Paspalum dilatatum, a dominant perennial C4 grass in native grasslands of the Flooding Pampa, Argentina. The dynamics of seedling emergence from natural seed banks and buried seeds was studied in a factorial experiment with flooding and defoliation treatments applied to soil monoliths (mesocosms) collected from natural grassland. Additional laboratory experiments were applied to investigate seed germination under different combinations of temperature, light quality and simulated flooding. Seed germination and seedling emergence of P. dilatatum were promoted by flooding and high intensity defoliation. Gaps generated by flooding were maintained by high intensity defoliation exercising a synergistic effect on survival seedlings. Flooding resulted in the breaking of seed dormancy and higher germination rates associated with alternating temperature and the activation of the phytochrome system. Our results indicate that microhabitat conditions associated with the disturbances forming gaps, such as flooding and heavy grazing, synergistically promote the recruitment process of this dominant grass species.  相似文献

Euryodendron excelsum H. T. Chang is a critically endangered plant from the family Theaceae that is endemic to China. It is now present in only one remnant population in a very narrow range and with a highly isolated and fragmented distribution pattern. The species is distributed close to the local villages and faces extinction because of the high level of anthropogenic disturbance. Thus, conservation and restoration of this species is urgent. The species reproduces by seed, but its germination requirements and seedling emergence are rarely understood. In this study, the germination requirements, desiccation tolerance and seedling emergence of the species were studied under controlled laboratory conditions. The results indicated that seeds of E. excelsum were non‐dormant. Optimal temperatures for germination were 15°C to 25°C; the germination percentage decreased and the mean germination time increased at high temperature. Seed germination was inhibited in the dark, suggesting that the seeds were positive photoblastic. Water stress also significantly inhibited germination percentage; no seeds germinated at 15% polyethylene glycol 6000. The fresh seeds had moderate moisture content of 28.6% and showed strong tolerance of dehydration. Thus, the seeds of E. excelsum tended to be orthodox. Seeds on the soil surface had the highest emergence percentage, which declined with depth of burial. Soil types significantly affected seedling emergence; seeds had higher emergence percentage in sandy soil than in mixed soil and clayed soil. Our study demonstrated that ex situ conservation and reintroduction of E. excelsum using seedling propagation from seeds is feasible.  相似文献
